Faculty Response To Journal Cancellations, Catherine A. Johnson, Samuel Cassady

This paper reports on a qualitative study that aimed to discover faculty and graduate students’ reaction to journal cancellation projects. In most studies that examine cancellation projects the main aim is to delineate methods used in making decisions about cancellations and the process followed to achieve a successful outcome. Our study looked at these factors but also interviewed faculty to get their response to the cancellations that had occurred at their university and to discover whether there was an alignment between the different ways in which librarians and faculty evaluated journals. Beyond Engineering: Unleashing The Universal Benefits Of Makerspaces For All Disciplines, Cath Bruhnke

The Adobe Studio & Makerspace at Clemson serves students from over fifty-six programs in addition to our engineering program. We collected data from the logs students fill out when logging their equipment use and found that during the '23-’24 academic year, over half of the visitors were from non-engineering programs. We have learned from our discussions with students that word of mouth is a significant factor in bringing new students to our space. With consistent outreach to faculty and staff, we hope to get more non-engineering classes for Adobe Studio & Makerspace tours.

Critical Credulity: Seeking Balance In A New Era Of Information Literacy, Kate E. Wimer

For many, information literacy could be described to some extent as “critical thinking about information”. This makes sense. For at least a decade, we’ve noted an apparent lack of critical behaviors in regard to information. In the meantime, we’ve seen these trends: Fake News and Misinformation Rising polarization As a field, librarians have doubled down on teaching better ways to recognize “good information,” usually by providing a more critical lens.

25 Reading Challenges An Interactive Reading Competition, Marion O. Finnegan, Etchel Barina

This poster aims to guide the audience through the process of creating a relevant and engaging reading challenge for third-level students in the UAE, using a real-world example created by librarians for the UAE’s Month of Reading in 2024.

For this reading competition, librarians created 25 fun reading challenges to encourage university students to read in various genres and formats, sometimes outside their comfort zone. Challenges included ‘Cook a Dish from a Recipe Book’, ‘Read a Story to a Child’, ‘Read a Book by an Emirati Author’ and ‘Listen to an audiobook using the Libby App’.

Library Faculty Scholarship

This case study describes the Belmont University Library’s partnership with a Tennessee men’s prison to provide access to higher education. The program has led to challenges relating to communication, circulation, cataloging, and collection development. These library services are necessary to provide students with access to information not only for their academic endeavors, but also for their own well-being and growth. This paper explores possible solutions to the information deficit of incarcerated students and how the library can support the needs of an underserved population.

The authors attended the 2024 annual meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) as part of a cohort of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) librarians sponsored by the partnership between the Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL) and AAAS. We describe two sessions, one on combating misinformation and one on open science. For these topics especially, hearing the perspectives of scientists was particularly valuable and interesting to us as librarians. The use of Open Educational Resources (OER) is becoming increasingly widespread in higher education institutions as the ease of use, equitable access, and the cost-free availability makes OER a viable option for classroom materials. Incorporating OER into the curriculum can be both beneficial and challenging for faculty. Because librarians are skilled and efficient in finding adequate resources to supplement learning, they prove to be an asset when striving to implement an OER initiative in the institution. During Constitution Week, Kennesaw State University Libraries organized a series of engaging events from September 16 to 20. The festivities kicked off with a faculty panel discussing the 25th Amendment and presidential succession, featuring insights from political science faculty. Voter registration events were held on both Kennesaw and Marietta campuses, allowing students to register, check their status, and interact with historical figures, and most importantly a therapy dog and library mascot, Summer the Corgi. The Covid-19 pandemic of 2020–2021 accelerated a long-term trend of declining print book use in academic libraries. At Seton Hall University, recovery has been slow, with both checkouts and in-house use still well below pre-Covid levels. Use of the physical library has also decreased. The decrease in print book use is especially notable among students. However, it is less apparent in subject areas that have undergone systematic inventory, removing outdated books and those in the catalog but not on the shelf, and updating of the collections. This makes for more attractive and accurately represented collections with a greater proportion of …
