Open Access And Global Inclusion: A Look At Cuba, Elizabeth Jardine, Maureen Garvey, J. Silvia Cho Feb 2017

Open Access And Global Inclusion: A Look At Cuba, Elizabeth Jardine, Maureen Garvey, J. Silvia Cho

Publications and Research

Is the Open Access movement meeting its goal of equalizing access to research worldwide? What we learned in libraries and archives during a delegation to Cuba inspired us to pursue this question. Latin America has long used OA to share its research, but it still has not achieved parity in access and contribution with the developed world. We consider what the OA movement can do to relieve some of these global inequities.

Scholarly Communication And The Dilemma Of Collective Action: Why Academic Journals Cost Too Much, John Wenzler Feb 2017

Scholarly Communication And The Dilemma Of Collective Action: Why Academic Journals Cost Too Much, John Wenzler

Copyright, Fair Use, Scholarly Communication, etc.

Why has the rise of the Internet—which drastically reduces the cost of distributing information—coincided with drastic increases in the prices that academic libraries pay for access to scholarly journals? This study argues that libraries are trapped in a collective action dilemma as defined by economist Mancur Olson in The Logic of Collective Action: Public Goods and the Theory of Groups. To truly reduce their costs, librarians would have to build a shared online collection of scholarly resources jointly managed by the academic community as a whole, but individual academic institutions lack the private incentives necessary to invest in a shared …

Analysis For Science Librarians Of The 2016 Nobel Prize In Physiology Or Medicine: The Life And Work Of Yoshinori Ohsumi, Neyda Gilman Jan 2017

Analysis For Science Librarians Of The 2016 Nobel Prize In Physiology Or Medicine: The Life And Work Of Yoshinori Ohsumi, Neyda Gilman

Library Scholarship

Autophagy is a cellular process of destruction and recycling. Cellular materials are broken down and recycled as needed, providing the body a way to remove unwanted material while also providing the means to create new needed items. The importance of this process and its possible role in numerous diseases is why Yoshinori Ohsumi has been awarded a 2016 Noble Prize. Ohsumi has been awarded the 2016 Nobel in Physiology or Medicine for his “discoveries of mechanisms for autophagy and thus paving the way for the exciting field of autophagy research” (Nobelprize.org “Press release: The 2016 Nobel Prize in Physiology or …

What’S New? Deploying A Library New Titles Page With Minimal Programming, John Meyerhofer Jan 2017

What’S New? Deploying A Library New Titles Page With Minimal Programming, John Meyerhofer

Staff Publications

With a new titles web page, a library has a place to show faculty, students, and staff the items they are purchasing for their community. However, many times heavy programing knowledge and/or a LAMP stack (Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP) or APIs separate a library’s data from making a new titles web page a reality. Without IT staff, a new titles page can become nearly impossible or not worth the effort. Here we will demonstrate how a small liberal arts college took its acquisition data and combined it with a Google Sheet, HTML, and a little JavaScript to create a new …

Social Networking Sites: Changing Roles, Skills And Use By Librarians In Tertiary Institutions In Nigeria., Felicia D. Semode, Stella Ejitagha Mrs, Ebikabowei Emmanuel Baro

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

The purpose of the study is to investigate the extent to which librarians use social networking sites (SNSs) and the level of skills possessed by librarians to effectively use these tools. A questionnaire was used to collect data on the skills and use of social networking sites by librarians in tertiary institutions in Nigeria. The questionnaire was developed using SurveyMonkey and administered using an online method. The study revealed that Facebook, WhatsApp, LinkedIn, Twitter, Skype and YouTube are the most popular SNSs used by the Librarians. Other social networking sites such as ‘Nigerian Library Association (NLA) online forum’ and ‘Research …
