More Than a Memory: Exploring Purdue University's History Through Objects extends a 2014 undergraduate effort, which resulted in the publication Little Else Than a Memory: Purdue Students Search for the Class of 1904. Purdue students in 2016-2017 academic year sought to understand the history of Purdue University and to recover the student experience more than 100 years prior, at the turn of the twentieth century. This research, conducted primarily within Purdue Archives and Special Collections, includes choosing, investigating, and analyzing the material objects those students left behind.

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
The paper describes the growth and development of open access repositories (OARs) in India. The paper proposes a Unicode-compliant information retrieval and representation (IRR) system viz. BURA (Burdwan University Research Archive) for Indian Universities. It has been developed using a number of open standards and open source software (OSS). This Unicode-compliant interface allows administrators to perform various system level operations as well as end users can browse and search resources in Bengali language. Also, describes the necessity of integrating Indic-script based SKOS-enabled subject access system (here DDC – Dewey Decimal Classification) into the proposed model in order to fulfil the …

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
Information use of police force occurs when information acquired by the police to satisfy an information need based on task assigned to them is actually put to use. Information is therefore useful and valuable if after receiving it, it changes things, decisions, behaviour or one’s character and solves the problem for which the information is sought.
Survey research design was adopted for the study. The study population comprised 2,305 police officers in Alimosho Local Government Police Division. Stratified random sampling method was used to select 227 police officers. Questionnaire was the instrument used for data collection. Data collected was analyzed …

Building Bridges Between Oregon And Fujian: Twenty Years Of The Horner Exchange, Richard Sapon-White, Veronica Vichit-Vadakan, Jian Wang
Library Faculty and Staff Publications and Presentations
Now in its 20th year, the Horner Exchange funds travel for library staff in Oregon and Oregon’s sister province, Fujian , China in order to foster the exchange of professional knowledge about library and information science. The three participants of the 2016 exchange (Richard Sapon-White of Oregon State University, Jian Wang of Portland State University, and Veronica Vichit-Vadakan of Oregon College of Oriental Medicine) spent three weeks exploring Fujian province, meeting with colleagues, sharing their expertise, and learning from the libraries and librarians of Fujian. Since this was a milestone anniversary for the program, they were also joined for part …

Online Information Literacy Module For Freshman Composition Students, Paige J. Dhyne
Honors Projects
The purpose of this Open Access Information Literacy module is to provide students with an interactive, online question-and-answer module to teach the basic fundamentals of information literacy and its uses as defined by the Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL) Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education. This module’s audience is a first-year/ freshman writing or composition student, but research has shown there is a lack of information literacy among all levels of college education. The need for information literacy and library classroom instruction at the collegiate level has grown significantly in response to the exponential growth of …

Presentations
Academic libraries are aligning themselves with their institutions’ strategic focus on student retention. But how do libraries get retention data? What do we do with it after we get it? And how do we tell our story? This presentation offers a successful, replicable model.

Library Faculty and Staff Publications and Presentations
Oregon libraries work to meet the information needs of our communities, a mission that is dependent on teamwork. Library managers are tasked with leading, supporting and developing the teams that serve our communities. Social justice and critical theory are frameworks that are often discussed within library practice, but are only starting to be applied to library management practice. The more we discuss social justice, the more apparent it is that inclusion and equity are essential aspects of library management. This program will open with a brief presentation discussing the overlap between critical theory and library management, then we will open …

Clickbait Science: A Review Of Rhetorical Patterns Within The Royal Society, Bryan T. Le
Clickbait Science: A Review Of Rhetorical Patterns Within The Royal Society, Bryan T. Le
Young Historians Conference
King Charles II of England gave birth to the Royal Society and the right for it to publish without interference in the seventeenth century. Out of this society came forth Philosophical Transactions, the first ever science journal. The journal, however, was not strictly bound to science. Articles within the journal exhibit a variety of unusual bits of information ranging from making water colors to constructing a bee-house. This paper shows that the Royal Society included articles that weren’t science but human interest to gather a following for themselves.

The Demographic Profile For Female Textile-Design Bloggers, Khadijah Baaqil
Department of Textiles, Merchandising and Fashion Design: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
A review of existing literature demonstrates the need for additional research on female home-based business owners. This study aimed to partially fill the literature gap by exploring the demographic profile of female home-based textile-design bloggers, a unique segment of the female home-based business world.
The findings of the qualitative content analysis of the 30 designers’ blogs and 138 blog posts included the findings of their age, nationality and ethnic identity, current place of residence, family status, educational background, occupation, and socioeconomic status. These findings were then reduced into numbers and percentages. Findings of the analysis show that designers vary from …

A Pilot “Big Data” Education Module Curriculum For Engineering Graduate Education: Development And Implementation, Megan R. Sapp Nelson, Line C. Pouchard
Libraries Faculty and Staff Scholarship and Research
Projects in engineering higher education increasingly produce data in the volume, variety, velocity, and need for veracity such that the output of the research is considered “Big Data”. While engineering faculty members do conceive of and direct the research producing this data, there may be gaps in faculty members’ knowledge in training graduate and undergraduate research assistants in the practical management of Big Data. The project described in this research paper details the development of a Big Data education module for graduate researchers in Electrical and Computer Engineering. The project has the following objectives: to document and describe current data …
Considerations Before Implementing Mobilecirc For A Deselection Project, Jodene R. Pappas
Considerations Before Implementing Mobilecirc For A Deselection Project, Jodene R. Pappas
Symposium on Arts and Research
In Fall 2014, Steen Library Administration developed a renovation project to repurpose an area for students to use, particularly graduate students. The northwest quadrant of the third floor in the library cleared for the project with materials deselected or shifted. Librarians estimated that about 105,000 volumes (15% of the stacks collection) could be deselected. Deselection is a routine task performed by libraries to create a more relevant and accessible collection for the users they serve. Library faculty use various criteria for each discipline and carefully consider each item.
To meet the deadline of September 1, 2015, an efficient method, tool, …

The Anchor, Volume 130.23: April 19, 2017, Hope College
The Anchor: 2017
The Anchor began in 1887 and was first issued weekly in 1914. Covering national and campus news alike, Hope College’s student-run newspaper has grown over the years to encompass over two-dozen editors, reporters, and staff. For much of The Anchor's history, the latest issue was distributed across campus each Wednesday throughout the academic school year (with few exceptions). In recent years The Anchor moved to monthly print issues and a more frequently updated website. The Anchor is now published in print twice per academic semester. Occasionally, the volume and/or issue numbering is irregular.

Developing Criteria To Establish Trusted Digital Repositories, John Faundeen
Developing Criteria To Establish Trusted Digital Repositories, John Faundeen
Copyright, Fair Use, Scholarly Communication, etc.
This paper details the drivers, methods, and outcomes of the U.S. Geological Survey’s quest to establish criteria by which to judge its own digital preservation resources as Trusted Digital Repositories. Drivers included recent U.S. legislation focused on data and asset management conducted by federal agencies spending $100M USD or more annually on research activities. The methods entailed seeking existing evaluation criteria from national and international organizations such as International Standards Organization (ISO), U.S. Library of Congress, and Data Seal of Approval upon which to model USGS repository evaluations. Certification, complexity, cost, and usability of existing evaluation models were key considerations. …
