Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Equitable resource allocation and provision is critical in all schools including those in the disadvantaged rural communities to improve learner outcomes and the quality of education irrespective of the educational paradigm. With a wide variety of educational resources in a school environment, quality of education and learner achievement can be entrenched and improved. However, the majority of the schools in poor and developing countries are still characterised by an inferior quality education and poor learner outcomes owing to an array of contextual realities and factors – amongst them high poverty levels and lack of adequate educational facilities and resources in …

Poverty, Literacy, And Social Transformation: An Interdisciplinary Exploration Of The Digital Divide, Amy J. Bach, Todd Wolfson, Jessica K. Crowell

Journal of Media Literacy Education

Harnessing scholarship focused on literacy and poverty, in this article we aim to complicate the common understanding of the digital divide. First, we argue that the dominant literature on the digital divide misses broader connections between technological exclusion and broader forms of economic and social exclusion. Accordingly, and following recent qualitative research on the digital divide, we believe future scholarship must examine the complicated relationships between poverty, inequality, and the digital divide and we look to poverty scholarship to understand the complicated and shifting nature of poverty. Finally, we make the case that scholars and practitioners focused on digital literacy …

Interinstitutional Student Success, Chelsea Heinbach, Brittany P. Fiedler, Rosan Mitola

Library Faculty Presentations

Transfer students make up 37.2% of college students in the United States (NSCRC 2015), but often aren’t considered in our design of instruction and outreach programs. They quickly blend in with the rest of the campus upon arrival, potentially causing libraries to fail in serving them appropriately. What services and resources do transfer students need? What knowledge and experiences are they bringing to the university? How can libraries collaborate with on- and off-campus partners?

In Fall 2017 and Spring 2018, we surveyed and interviewed transfer students at various points in their academic career. We focused on gaining an understanding of …

Tools For Troubleshooting: Which Ones And What For, Robert Heaton May 2018

Tools For Troubleshooting: Which Ones And What For, Robert Heaton

Library Faculty & Staff Publications

A small group of midsize land-grant institutions in the western United States responded to a survey on what tools they used for troubleshooting, what activities they accomplished using the tools, and who performed their troubleshooting. Most respondents use subscription-manager administration tools, email programs, electronic resource management systems, and ticket trackers, but many other software programs are each used at a small number of institutions. Most tools support multiple troubleshooting activities, and most troubleshooting activities are supported by multiple tools. Most libraries have slightly more paraprofessionals than faculty with some troubleshooting responsibility, but nearly all have at least one of each.
