Book Censorship In Nigeria: A Study Of Origin, Methods And Motivations, 1805-2018, Emmanuel Ifeduba
Book Censorship In Nigeria: A Study Of Origin, Methods And Motivations, 1805-2018, Emmanuel Ifeduba
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
Twenty-first century Nigeria may be described as the era of democracy yet freedom to publish, which is one of the hallmarks of true democracy, seem to be endangered more than ever before. Conversation around this subject has, however, been superficial, lacking in both historical and empirical depth. The aim of this study, therefore, is to investigate the origin, methods and motivations of censorship in Nigeria with a view to deepening the understanding of this phenomenon. Quantitative and qualitative data were collected offline and online using document analysis and interviews were analysed by simple percentages and the constant comparative method. Findings …

Global South Scholars Are Missing From European And Us Journals: What Can Be Done About It, Peace A. Medie, Alice J. Kang
Department of Political Science: Faculty Publications
Studies have shown that scholars in the Global South are under represented in top international peer-reviewed social and medical sciences journals.
The Global South refers to African, Asian, Latin American, and Middle Eastern countries who are also members of the Group of 77. The intergovernmental organisation of mainly developing countries is used to identify countries in the South. The global North includes the Group of 8 and the five permanent members of the UN Security Council. Our own analysis of gender and politics journals shows scholars in Africa, Asia, Latin America, and the Middle East are missing from leading journals …

Lavery Library Faculty/Staff Publications
Been with your old library system for a long time, and faced with an anxiety-ridden migration to something new? St. John Fisher College and Nazareth College were running Millennium/Sierra for over a decade before a switch to Alma in June 2017. New vocabulary, new data structures, new search systems -- was there anything that *wasn't* new? Allay your fears: it's been a year, and the library didn't explode. This informal presentation will discuss what made migration and post-implementation Alma life bearable: what went well, what we're still working on, and where we've turned for answers. "The seven-level Researcher Skill Development framework extends the RSD's original 5 levels of student autonomy to include the degree of autonomy required for a successful research career. It therefore addresses not only students, but also early, middle and late career researchers. This involves the extension of the same facets of inquiry that appear in the original RSD framework to include two higher levels: 6 and 7." -- https://www.adelaide.edu.au/rsd/framework/rsd7/

Open Educational Resources
Created by John Willison and Kerry O'Regan.
Adapted for the US context by Sara K. Kuhn.
"Research Skill Development (RSD) is about making explicit and coherent in regular university coursework the incremental attainment of research skills in a specific discipline. In the RSD, there are six facets of the research process, identified from the literature and modified according to Bloom’s taxonomy and our experiences of using the framework in the disciplines. The meaning of ‘research’ in this context is: students actively finding information new to themselves. Underlying this notion is the ‘degree of knowness’ of knowledge: whether research involves …

Reaching Faculty Where They Are: Lessons Learned On Outreach, Monica Berger
Publications and Research
Successful scholarly communications outreach centers on a consistent, flexible, and holistic approach. We provide training and support throughout the lifecycle of scholarly communications. Our work has had a strong, positive impact at our college and our institutional repository is the centerpiece of our work.
The value of one-on-one is critical. We reach out to faculty when receiving a Google Scholar alert for new publications. Encouraging self-depositing allows us to train on using the IR and discuss author’s rights and using the SPARC Addendum. We have taken the approach that educating faculty is our ultimate goal.

Problems And Promises Of Qualitative Secondary Analysis For Research In Information Science (Paper), Amy Vanscoy, Jenny Bossaller, C. Sean Burns
Information Science Faculty Publications
Qualitative secondary analysis (QSA) is a method that has been applied in other disciplines even though it has rarely been explicitly used or discussed in information science. This paper discusses the epistemological and ethical issues surrounding QSA, explains the value of the method for information science research, discusses its benefits and challenges, and provides an example case study.

In Pursuit Of Equity: Applying Design Thinking To Develop A Values-Based Open Access Statement, Courtney L. Waugh, Emily Carlisle, Lillian S. Rigling
Western Libraries Publications
We wanted to rethink how our library supported open access, so we attempted to ask ourselves and our staff why they supported “open” and how they defined “open”. By unpacking our institutional and individual understandings of “open” using design thinking principles, we were able to not only create a strong and value-driven statement, but to also open the door for staff at all levels to engage in policy-making for the organization.

Information Need Of Distance Learners In Nigeria, Adetola Akanbiemu
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
Information is a resource used to increase knowledge and usable for the intended purpose. Its need is a global widespread essential feature of production, consumption and exchange of human mental creativity across the globe. Having discovered that information support services are part of services in institutions that add to the value and quality of learning regardless of the mode of delivery, the information needs of distance learners deserve to be met, irrespective of where they are located. It is in this respect that paper seeks to examine the information needs of distance learners, the concept of distance learning and its …

Finding and evaluating existing open educational resources (OER) offer particular challenges to faculty and librarians. The OER discovery process is distributed across several repositories and search engines. OER searches tend to include a variety of different learning objects presented in a wide range of formats, which can be difficult to evaluate and compare.
This lightning talk will discuss the steps that Linn-Benton Community College took to improve the discovery process for open courses in its institutional repository. It will discuss the steps we took to include these courses in a popular OER search tool and facilitate the evaluation process by …

What to do when designing a repository for an institution that doesn’t already have a predefined structure or taxonomy by which to organize or make ‘browsable’ your collections? Conference attendees who come from complex institutions without clearly set “Departments” will be interested to hear how Providence St Joseph Health (PSJH) created an organizational structure and taxonomy during the implementation of their Digital Commons IR. By considering existing classification schemes (LC and NLM), internal naming practices, and consulting small stakeholder focus groups PSJH is making their publications easily browsable by both internal and potential external users.
