Changing The Conversation From Avoiding Predatory Journals To Finding And Evaluating The Right Journal, Terri Gotschall, Shalu Gillum
Changing The Conversation From Avoiding Predatory Journals To Finding And Evaluating The Right Journal, Terri Gotschall, Shalu Gillum
Southern Chapter/Medical Library Association Annual Conference
Objective: Predatory publishing is a trending topic in academia. Librarians all over are having conversations with faculty on how to steer clear of predatory publishers. But helping avoid predatory journals doesn’t meet the goal of having an article published. Now is the time to explore changing the conversation from predatory publishing to finding and evaluating the right journal. Methods: Last year librarians went to departmental meetings to present a cautionary tale of the predatory publisher. Outlandish emails from predatory journals were shared, along with what to look for when determining whether or not a journal publisher is legitimate. But just …

Speeding Ahead: Assessing Trends In Distance Librarian Services For Advanced Practice Nursing Programs, Gregg A. Stevens, Elizabeth G. Hinton, Roy E. Brown
Southern Chapter/Medical Library Association Annual Conference
With the increasing popularity of distance education among universities and busy students, many Advanced Practice Nursing (APN) programs have shifted to become either online or hybrid programs. To meet the research and instruction needs of these students, some nursing librarians are using technology for virtual research and instruction. This study was designed to assess the extent to which nursing librarians in North America are providing virtual research and instruction services for APN students.

Can You Credit This? A Credit-Bearing Information Literacy Course For Graduate Health Science Students, Margaret Ansell, Mary E. Edwards, Hannah F. Norton, Nancy Schaefer, Michele R. Tennant
Southern Chapter/Medical Library Association Annual Conference
Objective: University of Florida HSCL librarians have long offered information-related instruction through guest lectures in the programs they serve and stand-alone workshops; however, librarians had not taught any credit-bearing courses focused on information literacy prior to 2016. To more fully integrate information-related skills into curricula, librarians developed a one-credit course for graduate students, initially targeting those in basic science programs but expecting that its modular format would allow easy adaptation for other health science programs. After two successful semesters teaching this course, librarians adapted the instructional content to an audience of graduate students in the College of Public Health and …

Remote Reference Clinics: Supporting A New Assistant Program In Evidence-Based Medicine (Ebm) Courses, Rebecca Roth, Francisco J. Fajardo
Southern Chapter/Medical Library Association Annual Conference
Traditional library services have become increasingly portable, especially when academic programs are moved away from the main campus to a satellite site. Essentially, “bringing the library to them” approach becomes an efficient solution in place of making patrons come to the library. At Florida International University’s Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine (FIU HWCOM), a new Master’s in Physician Assistant Studies (MPAS) program presented such a challenge to the school’s librarians when it came time to provide regular library instruction for Evidence-Based Medicine (EBM) courses, and assisting with a related capstone project.

Redesigning A Hospital’S Evidence-Based Practice Course, Emily Brennan, Amanda Davis, Rebecca Harper
Southern Chapter/Medical Library Association Annual Conference
The Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) Value Institute, which falls under the hospital’s Quality Department, has contributed to evidence-based practice (EBP) culture through education, evidence synthesis services, and the development of clinical decision support tools. Three members of the Value Institute -- a librarian, Clinical Evidence-Based Analyst, and Senior Value Specialist -- have taught a variety of EBP courses to clinicians over the years. However, because of increasing course dropout rates, the Value Institute conducted focus groups to identify ways to redesign the course. Two focus groups consisted of 6-8 previous course participants each. The focus groups started with …

Medical Libraries Of Tomorrow: Exploring New Acquisition Methods For E-Textbook Reference Collection Titles, Yumi Yaguchi
Southern Chapter/Medical Library Association Annual Conference
Objective: Acquiring new individual e-textbook titles at the Florida International University (FIU) Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine (HWCOM) Medical Library: The current method needs to be reconsidered?
Introduction: The Course Textbook Reference Collection has annually prepared for HWCOM programs based on the course textbook lists from each program coordinator. Librarians are always required to first look for textbooks in an electronic format:
HWCOM Library = Nearly 100% digital
Limited space for print copies
Clinical teaching sites -across the South Florida region
However, searching a specific e-book title is challenging.
Methods: A review and analysis of e-textbook acquisition activity records from …

Rowan University achieved the R3 Carnegie Classification in 2013 resulting in significant changes in strategic hires and investment of funds to support its newfound research mission. The institution has seen rapid growth as well from about 14000 students in 2013 to 18000 students in 2018. Forty new tenure-track faculty will begin in Fall 2018 and the university just announced a $5 million research fund as one such initiative to support and further research for its faculty and researchers. The Campbell Library at the Glassboro campus, as a result, has a tremendous opportunity to align its efforts and services to meet …

Responsible Use Of Materials For Oer: A Hands-On Workshop For Faculty, Madeline Cohen
Publications and Research
This lightening talk will give an overview of an active-learning workshop at Lehman College for faculty developing OER. The goals of the 90 minute workshop are to provide practical exercises through which faculty learn how to identify, provide attribution for, and reuse materials that are under copyright, open access (public domain) or under Creative Commons licenses. Research Guides and tutorials on copyright and Creative Commons have been provided to faculty, but the content can be difficult for the novice to absorb. In fact, faculty often think of copyright and Creative Commons as more confusing than they are in practice. Therefore, the …

Visualizing Scholarly Communication, Nina Collins, Matthew Hannah
Libraries Faculty and Staff Presentations
University libraries across the country are investing in Digital Humanities and digital scholarship initiatives, providing support for research and teaching using digital tools and methods. Because digital scholarship offers scholars new ways to visualize and analyze their research, which communicates such research in new ways, it has clear lines of connection with scholarly communications. Combining these two unique areas of library activity offers opportunities for new library research by leveraging methods from DH to tackle problems in scholarly communications. Researchers at Purdue are collaborating on just such a project by applying digital tools to the analysis of predatory publishing. In …

Data Management And Curation For Qualitative Data, Sebastian Karcher
Open Access Day
Researchers and librarians are increasingly required to engage in careful management and curation of research data. These are still relatively new activities in most scientific disciplines, but they are particularly uncharted territory for research involving qualitative data. Based on his experience as the associate director of the Qualitative Data Repository (https://qdr.syr.edu), Sebastian will talk about the importance of managing and sharing qualitative data and about some best practices in doing so.

Within the University at Albany, the Center for Undergraduate Research and Creative Engagement (CURCE) hosts the Annual Undergraduate Research Conference, a program designed to showcase and promote student success and research excellence. Previously, CURCE has relied upon outdated and inefficient methods for soliciting student submissions for this conference. This process will be greatly enhanced by a partnership with the University Libraries, through the use of the Scholars Archive. This open-access tool represents an opportunity that will drastically reduce costs associated with the abstract submission process, improve workflow, and involve faculty in the conference planning and application processes. Utilization of the …
The Shift Toward Open Research: A Discussion About Drivers, Recent Developments, And The Future Of Scholarship, Nick Shockey
The Shift Toward Open Research: A Discussion About Drivers, Recent Developments, And The Future Of Scholarship, Nick Shockey
Open Access Day
The shift toward a system of research and scholarship that is open by default is currently in progress. Since 2013, US federal research agencies have required that articles reporting publicly funded research be publicly accessible within 12 months. The Gates Foundation now requires immediate open access for funded research, and a group of 10 national funders in Europe have committed to implementing a similar policy by 2020. The momentum behind open research is building; however, what the end result looks like is still very much an open question. This talk will explore the drivers of this shift toward open research, …

Panel Discussion: Provost's Open Educational Resource (Oer) Fellows, Billie Franchini, Lenore Horowitz, Marcus Adams, Jeremy Feldblyum, Matthew Ingram
Open Access Day
While the adoption of open educational resources (OERs) in the undergraduate curriculum has the evident benefit of reducing cost to the student, thinking deeply about OER adoption reveals numerous questions: can OERs match the quality of traditional textbooks and other commercial educational resources? Are there problems associated with the current textbook landscape that OERs can solve? And how easily can OERs be integrated into classrooms with established modes of instruction? Each of the Provost’s OER Fellows will discuss briefly some of the most important conclusions from the current OER research literature and discuss these in the context of SUNY Albany …

Students in the discipline of Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies are uniquely positioned to critically engage with systems of power and apply academic theory to real world practice as a field that has a clear and implicit social justice angle to its scholarship. The Open Access movement can benefit from the critical theories used in WGS as a means of ensuring maximum inclusivity of the movement. Further, WGS students must acknowledge their privileged position within an academic institution and publish in ways that undermine the systems of power that lock up knowledge behind a toll in order to align their …

Open Access And Its Impact On Access And Subscriptions, Michael Levine-Clark
University Libraries: Faculty Scholarship
In this paper the author examines from a library perspective some of the complications with transitioning to an open access model for journal publishing; how costs that support publishing efforts may shift from readers to researchers; what’s happening within the library community with regard to assessing the value of subscriptions; and what universities may come to expect from content providers as private funders take a more visible role in mandating the “openness” of research information.

Covering national and campus news alike, Hope College’s student-run newspaper has grown over the years to encompass over two-dozen editors, reporters, and staff. For much of The Anchor's history, the latest issue was distributed across campus each Wednesday throughout the academic school year (with few exceptions). In recent years The Anchor moved to monthly print issues and a more frequently updated website. The Anchor is now published in print twice per academic semester. Occasionally, the volume and/or issue numbering is irregular.
