The Anchor, Volume 132.10: November 14, 2018, Hope College

The Anchor: 2018

The Anchor began in 1887 and was first issued weekly in 1914. Covering national and campus news alike, Hope College’s student-run newspaper has grown over the years to encompass over two-dozen editors, reporters, and staff. For much of The Anchor's history, the latest issue was distributed across campus each Wednesday throughout the academic school year (with few exceptions). In recent years The Anchor moved to monthly print issues and a more frequently updated website. The Anchor is now published in print twice per academic semester. Occasionally, the volume and/or issue numbering is irregular.

The status signalling hypothesis aims to explain within-species variation in ornamentation by suggesting that some ornaments signal dominance status. Here, we use multilevel meta-analytic models to challenge the textbook example of this hypothesis, the black bib of male house sparrows (Passer domesticus). We conducted a systematic review, and obtained primary data from published and unpublished studies to test whether dominance rank is positively associated with bib size across studies. Contrary to previous studies, the overall effect size (i.e. meta-analytic mean) was small and uncertain. Furthermore, we found several biases in the literature that further question the support available …

Trust Issues: Critically Examining The News With The Trust Indicators, Nicole Branch, Leanna Goodwater, Shannon Kealey Nov 2018

Trust Issues: Critically Examining The News With The Trust Indicators, Nicole Branch, Leanna Goodwater, Shannon Kealey

Staff publications, research, and presentations

The public's trust in the news has declined to low levels, and evidence shows this distrust has led to barriers between people and groups. The Markkula Center for Applied Ethics at Santa Clara University (SCU) has partnered with over 75 news organizations on a Trust Project to establish industry-wide standards to restore the public's trust in the news. News and social media partners have committed to a set of Trust Indicators including information on sponsorship and ethics, journalists' qualifications, and how stories were researched. SCU librarians will discuss their partnership with the Markkula Center in a pilot project to use …

Access To Humanities Scholarship Through Public Search Engines, Jody C. Fagan, Malia Willey Nov 2018

Access To Humanities Scholarship Through Public Search Engines, Jody C. Fagan, Malia Willey

Libraries

While research has shown search engine coverage of science and social science scholarship rivals traditional library databases, the coverage or utility of public search engines for the humanities needs further exploration. This presentation will report results from at least two empirical research studies that investigated access to humanities scholarship via public search engines (e.g. Google, Google Scholar, Google Books, Microsoft Academic). We will propose additional research ideas that we hope will inspire future studies.

Developing Communication Plans To Support Technology Changes, Jody C. Fagan, Malia Willey

Libraries

Technology change is difficult for everyone, even under the best circumstances. A collaboratively-developed communication plan can ease stress and foster buy-in. Come participate in a workshop where we will show-and-tell best practices and examples of successful communication plans, then offer structured activities where you will develop your own plan, either for an actual project or a sample scenario we will offer. You’ll get immediate peer feedback on your ideas, and will have the opportunity to ask facilitators and other participants questions about specific challenges.

Project Management Madness: 3 Key Programs For Communication, Personal Tasks And Large Projects, Rachel S. Evans

Presentations

No matter what member of a team you are, be it content editor, web designer, database manager or systems administrator, getting things done and meeting goals depends largely on how you communicate with one another, handle your time and effectively collaborate on small and big projects. This session will use our own team's preferred platforms to show specific examples of how we are managing our taskflow across three different programs to tackle business as usual, short and long term work, and major special projects.

The three programs that will be compared for pros, cons, and their integration with one another …

Throwing The Doors Wide Open: The Library’S Role In Fostering Accessibility, Christina Wray Nov 2018

Throwing The Doors Wide Open: The Library’S Role In Fostering Accessibility, Christina Wray

Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

Libraries play a variety of important roles, but perhaps the most important is as a place where ALL members of our communities are welcomed. But, what does it really mean to be inclusive? How do we encourage our patrons to be inclusive outside the library walls? What impact are we having in the lives of our patrons? In this session we will explore how we can facilitate an inclusive mindset in our libraries and our communities.

Libraries As Printers - Or - The Challenges Of Acquiring Pdf Scores And Parts From Self-Publishing Composers, Lisa Rae Philpott Nov 2018

Libraries As Printers - Or - The Challenges Of Acquiring Pdf Scores And Parts From Self-Publishing Composers, Lisa Rae Philpott

Western Libraries Presentations

While the electronic publishing of books and scores has become commonplace, e-publishing of scores by major music publishers has lagged-behind. Libraries and music publishers are unwilling to relinquish the print format, but the proliferation of music notation software has given rise to greater numbers of self-publishing composers, keen to sell and deliver their musical works in PDF.

The Music Library at the University of Western Ontario is an anomaly, in that it acquires, catalogues, and circulates music for the Faculty of Music’s choirs and large ensembles. A faculty member’s request to participate in a large-scale commission of a new work …
