Partnering For Social Justice: Msw Interns In Public Libraries, Sarah C. Johnson Apr 2019

Partnering For Social Justice: Msw Interns In Public Libraries, Sarah C. Johnson

Publications and Research

While the collaborative trend among professional social workers and librarians continues to grow, literature about the utilization of student social workers partnering with libraries is non-existent. Over 64,000 students are currently enrolled in M.S.W. programs through the United States and nearly all are required to complete approximately 900 hours of fieldwork. Such students provide the skills, knowledge, and values that can help take diversity in public libraries to the next level. Public librarians play a critical role in advocating for social justice and change. By reaching out to MSW programs, they invite budding social workers to help advance tolerance for …

The Goldilocks Method: Demonstrating Your Value In Small, Medium, And Large Bites, Heather J. Martin Apr 2019

The Goldilocks Method: Demonstrating Your Value In Small, Medium, And Large Bites, Heather J. Martin

Books, Presentations, Posters, Etc.

Background: In an era of financial constraint hospital libraries are facing closer scrutiny and must prove their value in order to survive. Leadership at a large health system library found the traditional written annual report lacked the impact needed to capture the attention and the imagination of administration. Taking different approaches over the years, this library has found a solution that is “just right”, creating three very different documents – small, medium, and large – to demonstrate its worth.

Description: Library leadership moved away from the traditional written annual report toward a one-page infographic that depicted the library’s scope, scale, …

The Claude Henry Neuffer Diaries: The Story Of A Signal Corps Serviceman In The China-Burma-India Theater Of Wwii, Kyle Brady Henderson

Senior Theses

This senior thesis project involved working with an unprocessed collection from the Manuscripts Collection of the South Caroliniana Library. The collection (which mainly consists of two diary volumes) documents Claude Henry Neuffer’s service in the China-Burma-India Theater during World War II. The goal of this thesis was to aid in the processing and digitization of this collection through the creation of full transcripts, a map, and a narrative description of the collection. This work will help to preserve the collection, improve accessibility to future researchers, and provide additional historical context.

What Do High School Students Know About Information Literacy? A Case Study Of One University’S Feeder Schools, Melissa Correll

The Living Archive In The Anthropocene, Nora Almeida, Jen Hoyer Apr 2019

The Living Archive In The Anthropocene, Nora Almeida, Jen Hoyer

Publications and Research

This paper presents the concept of the living archive as a system which reflects how social behavior and cultural production are part of the Anthropocene. The authors explore how dominant narratives of both the Anthropocene and the archive work to consolidate power and maintain cultural and disciplinary divisions. The authors refute conceptions of the Anthropocene as a purely biophysical phenomenon that is alienated from cultural practice and of the archive as a comprehensive and nostalgic space. They then introduce the living archive as an alternative representational, creative, and reactive space and illustrate how the living archive can intervene in ecological …

What stereotypes about working parents exist within the culture of academic libraries? In what ways are working mothers and fathers impacted by these stereotypes? How can institutions work to challenge these stereotypes and provide support for academic librarians who are balancing career advancement and family obligations? These are the three primary questions this panel will seek to address as part of “Recasting the Parentative: Seeking balance amidst the busyness.” Four panelists will discuss the preliminary results of a study of academic librarian-parent stereotypes and how those stereotypes affect academic library work. They will explore stories from academic librarians about their …
