Using Information Literacy To The Lead The Fourth Industrial Revolution, Rachael Juskuv, Maura Keating

Library Staff Publications, Presentations & Journal Articles

Our future in the world ahead will include continued upskilling and dexterity in learning. While technical skills are crucial, we must be able to understand, be critical of, and evaluate the cultural, historical, and technical background behind the data to be effective users and creators of data. While data are the facts or details from which information is derived, individual pieces of data are rarely useful alone. For data to become information, data needs to be put into context. Information literacy is the tool that helps to build meaning. During this session, we’ll examine recent examples of data misunderstanding and …

This study investigates the understanding and perceptions of metrics, as well as the influences and implications of the use of evaluative metrics on research practices, including choice of research topics and publication channels, citation behavior, and scholarly communication in Irish universities. Semi-structured, in-depth interviews were conducted with researchers from the humanities, the social sciences, and the sciences in various career stages. Creating An Outreach Story: Assessment Results, Strategic Planning, And Reflection, Rosan Mitola, Amy Wainwright

Library Faculty Research

Academic library outreach and student engagement initiatives often strive to connect students to learning spaces, resources, and experts. Librarians do this work to raise awareness of services and to remove barriers so students feel more comfortable seeking help. Additionally, these activities promote the academic library as a hub of engagement, innovation, and continual learning to various user groups. Unfortunately, because these learning experiences can often be unique or serendipitous, measuring how these efforts are contributing to the library’s teaching, learning, and research missions can be difficult. This paper focuses on how academic librarians can align their outreach to strategic goals …

When The Job You Were Hired For Changes: Realigning Job Descriptions With Job Priorities, Christina Hillman, Mia Breitkopf

Lavery Library Faculty/Staff Publications

In this poster, two librarians at two different institutions will present results of job audits they completed, based on the Academic Library Value: The Impact Starter Kit by Megan Oakleaf (2017). Collaborating across institutions, these early-career librarians were able to work through the job audit process together, and engage in open discussions that might have been impossible with a different colleague at their home institutions.

These librarians each decided to complete a job audit because they saw a need to recast their job descriptions. Each holds a position that was newly created at the time they were hired, in order …

Digital Archives In The Discovery Layer: A Collaboration Between Archivists And Technical Services Librarians, Christina A. Beis, Kayla Harris, Stephanie Shreffler

Roesch Library Faculty Presentations

Effective collaboration between archives and technical services increases the discoverability of special collection materials. Archivists at a medium-sized institution had been using Archive-It to collect websites for a few years, but the information was isolated in a separate platform and wasn’t effectively marketed to users. Working together, the team of archivists and technical services librarians incorporated the website collections into the discovery layer. Metadata was added at the seed level and indexed on a single, user-friendly platform. Attendees will learn about implementing digital archive collections and explore how they can increase their visibility through marketing.

The Forgotten Expedition Of The Michigan Polar Bears, Laura Anthon, Jamie Breyfogle, Timothy Embertson, Natalie Weg

18th Annual Celebration of Undergraduate Research and Creative Activity (2019)

The Michigan Polar Bear expedition saw Allied forces leading a controversial excursion into Northern Russia during the concluding years of World War I. Despite thousands of soldiers being sent to interfere with the Russian Civil War, the Polar Bear Expedition has been lost from collective memory. We publicly inquired about the expedition, then combined this research with a found scholarly consensus about the lack of cognizance relating to the events. This revealed a disconnect, which led us to inquire as to the nature and origin of its historical omission. Our primary sources of research focused on the oral histories of …
