Introduction: In the aftermath of COVID-19, libraries faced the challenge of reengaging students and rebuilding disrupted outreach efforts. At East Tennessee State University’s Sherrod Library, librarians recognized the need to rebuild, innovate, and restructure our approach to student outreach. This presentation will explore how ETSU reference and instruction librarians revamped existing strategies to foster a welcoming, inclusive environment for students by redesigning our student orientation process, by developing several casual student-centered clubs, and by opening a new reference desk for drop-in research help. Sarah Moukhliss, a librarian with a background in K-12 library curriculum, instructional design, and pedagogy noted that there was a gap in standards when designing student-centric library guides at her university. Although there are vetted standards for online course design, there are a less structured roadmap for designing library guides with pedagogical value. Moukhliss remixed the SUNY Online Course Quality Review Rubric (OSCQR) to become the Library Guide Assessment Standards for Quality Checked Review (LGAS). Initiated in 2020 with a multi-year grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities, Division of Preservation and Access, The Gulf Coast LGBT Radio and Television Digitization Project aimed to digitize and preserve thousands of hours of LGBTQ broadcast history from the Houston, Texas area. Through meticulous inventorying, digitization, redaction, transcription, publication, promotion, and preservation processes, the project team navigated the delicate balance between equitable access and copyright compliance. The selected programs encapsulate decades of LGBTQ life and culture, covering a diverse array of topics crucial to understanding the community’s evolution in the region.

Although libraries are facing a substantial increase in book challenges that disproportionately target queer books, many librarians have had limited opportunities for professional development in understanding queer representation in library collections. In this workshop, participants will use the Rainbow Representation Rubric to analyze queer narratives and identities in brief example texts (book reviews and picture books). The presenters will guide participants in discussions that prepare them to support their communities by developing collections that capture the true diversity of queer experiences.

The study applied a descriptive survey design with a sampled population of 48 special librarians selected through purposive sampling techniques from 24 special libraries in Africa. The study was guided by four research objectives. The main instrument used for data collection was a 4 point scaled questionnaires scaled in that 1 = “strongly disagree” and 4 = “strongly agree”. The instrument was validated by three experts in measurement and evaluation from Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Nigeria and further subjected to internal consistency test using Cronbach’s alpha. An academic health sciences library hosted a grant-funded living library program titled “Bringing Stories of Women’s Health to the Forefront.” With a campus that is increasingly focused on incorporating the humanities into medical education, the library added to this momentum by offering a program which encouraged empathy through the art of storytelling. The program was delivered via three routes: an in-person event for the city’s metro community, a virtual event for the university community and their clinical partners, and oral interview video recordings that are hosted on the library website. Critical visual literacy (CVL) is the ability to evaluate and deconstruct the sociocultural contexts in which visuals are produced and viewed, and is a core skill for students to develop. This poster will present prominent definitions of CVL, compared against the results of a research study in which undergraduate students critically analyzed a children’s picture book and developed their own definition of CVL. Associated research and instructional methods will be discussed. Attendees will learn about CVL as an interdisciplinary concept and will be encouraged to adapt the authors’ methods to advance their own understanding of and teaching with CVL.

With the increased interest in evidence synthesis research in social sciences and fields outside of the health sciences, more librarians are actively involved in consulting and collaborating with researchers, with some also participating as co-authors on projects (Chapman, 2021; Kogut, Ramirez, & Foster, 2022). Based on individual requests, librarians may conduct comprehensives searches, document and report searches to ensure reproducibility, and/or assist with question refinement, protocol development, citation management tools, and evidence synthesis software.

In Spring 2023, the Leonard Lief Library at Lehman College (CUNY) conducted an assessment of its library chatbot which uses OpenAI’s ChatGPT API with the goal of improving its functionality and performance. This presentation highlights the assessment’s findings, including types of questions asked, and areas where the chatbot succeeds and where it struggles. Additionally, the presenters will detail the creation of a rubric to measure the accuracy and completeness of the chatbot’s answers for users. Although many universities have adopted student management systems (SMS) such as Navigate or Starfish to track and communicate with students about their academic progress, libraries have had little involvement with these platforms. This poster presents a case study of a Library’s integration as a referral point in Navigate. Faculty are now able to raise ad-hoc alerts that refer students to research support at the library. In addition to providing another avenue of research support, librarians are also able to keep faculty informed throughout the process, something not integrated into other systems of library support.

As anti-DEI legislation spreads and the February 2025 “Dear Colleague” letter from the Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights deems DEI programs federally unlawful, faculty—particularly contingent instructors—may self-censor DEI discussions out of concern for job security. As a result this study investigated use of online information resources and academic staff research productivity. A survey research design was used, in which the population consist of academic staff in public universities in Ogun State. Proportionate random sampling technique was used to select 158 respondents that represented the sample size. SPSS was used for data analyses, using percentage, means and standard deviations. Information-seeking has long been the subject of theoretical modeling, often drawing from cognitive, behavioral, computational, and even evolutionary perspectives to explain how individuals navigate, filter, and utilize information. Several dominant frameworks—Carol Kuhlthau’s Information Search Process, Marcia Bates’ Berrypicking Model, Peter Pirolli & Stuart Card’s Information Foraging Theory, Kiyohiko Nakamura’s Information Criteria framework, and Ian Ruthven’s Information Shaping Theory —have provided structured ways of understanding how people interact with information environments. However, while these frameworks offer valuable insights, they often operate within mechanistic or efficiency-driven paradigms, which risk overlooking the complex, embodied, and socioculturally situated nature of human information behaviors.
