Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
Research and development are very important and integral aspects in an academic set up as it leads to overall progress and growth of a nation. The key function of universities is to inspire students to do research in areas of interest which affect the local community socially the most. Library resources are vital for teaching, learning and research needs of faculty and students. Careful planning of resources and services prioritizing the needs and concern of the learning community goes a long way in enhancing the research culture in universities. This study was taken to investigate the provision of resources and …

Towards An Institutional Research Data Policy: Taking A Journey At Singapore Management University, Danping Dong, Pin Pin Yeo
Research Collection Library
In recent years, there has been growing interest on Research Data Management, not only from the academic community but also from governments, funders, publishers and research institutions. Research data is increasingly recognized as a valuable output arising out of research activities therefore an asset. It is recognized as a critical evidence in supporting and validating published research claims in the light of an imminent ‘reproducibility crisis’ in some scientific disciplines.
In this presentation, we will share the experiences and learnings in developing and supporting the implementation of a Research Data Policy at Singapore Management University (SMU) in collaboration with our …

Relational Liaising To Integrate Informed Learning Into The Disciplinary Classroom, Kim L. Ranger
Relational Liaising To Integrate Informed Learning Into The Disciplinary Classroom, Kim L. Ranger
Books and Contributions to Books
This conceptual chapter sets the stage for how librarians can support informed learning. It looks at how the intersections between informed learning, Bakhtin’s philosophy of communication, and relational leadership contribute to a model of relational liaising. The chapter provides examples of practical applications, interdisciplinary collaboration, and shared leadership which librarians and other teachers can adapt for specific arts, humanities, or social sciences disciplines. Many of the illustrations are set within communication-related curricula but also include the arts.

Introduction For Informed Learning Applications: Insights From Research And Practice, Kim L. Ranger
Introduction For Informed Learning Applications: Insights From Research And Practice, Kim L. Ranger
Books and Contributions to Books
Informed learning practice encompasses a range of approaches including collaboration between librarians and classroom instructors (whose primary responsibility is teaching regularly-scheduled courses) to construct connections between informed learning theory, information literacy practice, and disciplinary scholarly products to foster reflective and deep engagement with information. Informed learning differs from other approaches to information literacy in that the focus is on both the process of learning disciplinary content and the knowledge gained as a result of interacting with information (information literacy experiences) while seeking, evaluating, and citing. Reflection, transformation, and relationship are vital elements of informed learning, and scholarly communication is integrated …

Accelerating Scholarly Communication: The Transformative Role Of Preprints, Andrea Chiarelli, Rob Johnson, Emma Richens, Stephen Pinfield
Copyright, Fair Use, Scholarly Communication, etc.
Five take-away messages:
Early and fast dissemination, increased opportunities for feedback and openness are seen as the main benefits of preprints.
The main concerns over preprints are the lack of quality assurance, media potentially reporting inaccurate research and journals rejecting articles if a preprint has been posted.
Twitter has been playing a key enabling role in the current second wave of preprints and preprint servers. It also appears to be the main way researchers are exposed to preprints in the first place.
It is not clear who will be responsible for posting preprints in the long-term – researchers or publishers? …

Teaching Students To Critically Evaluate Textbooks, Christopher Mchale, Ian Mcdermott, Steven Ovadia
Publications and Research
This chapter is a case study describing how library faculty combined service learning and information literacy to help students evaluate textbooks, comparing commercial ones to Open Education Resources. The underlying idea was to give students not only a scholarly grounding that would help them as they move through their academic careers but also a practical vocational orientation to help them succeed in the workforce and, hopefully, become future contributors to the free culture movement.

Beautiful Connector: Collection Showcase Exhibits As Teaching Tools And Community Builders, Antje Mays
Library Faculty and Staff Publications
Libraries’ quest to strengthen connections with their constituencies often finds expression in new services and repurposed user spaces. Some literature portrays libraries as focusing away from collections toward new trends in library portfolios, but showcasing collections can prove very effective in bringing the library and user communities closer together. This article recounts two recent library collection showcase exhibits as successful examples of bolstering stakeholder connections: The first collections exhibit showcased books on Chinese language, literature, culture, art and architecture, history, and medicine received through the Window of Shanghai program. The second collections exhibit showcased scholarly books, U.S. government publications, citizen …
