Graduate Students And Academic Integrity: What Is The Librarian's Role?, Roman Koshykar

Upstate New York Science Librarians Conference

As Graduate Services Coordinator at RIT, the presenter was asked to provide instruction on academic integrity to new graduate students for two consecutive Fall Semester Orientations. This presentation will compare and contrast academic integrity orientation activities delivered in the Fall 2018 Semester with those delivered in the Fall 2019 Semester. In the latter term, the RIT Office of Graduate Education placed a greater emphasis on academic integrity content and less emphasis on information about library resources and services, as compared with the former term, in their orientation program for new graduate students. Dialogue Is A Bridge: Mapping Information Literacy, Social Justice, And Catholic Social Teaching, Desirae S. Zingarelli-Sweet, Elisa Slater Acosta Oct 2019

Dialogue Is A Bridge: Mapping Information Literacy, Social Justice, And Catholic Social Teaching, Desirae S. Zingarelli-Sweet, Elisa Slater Acosta

Librarian Publications & Presentations

In the spirit of what Pope Francis calls a “culture of encounter” created through dialogue, first we map points of convergence and potential friction between the ALA Core Values of Librarianship, themes of Catholic social teaching, and recent articulations in library literature of what social justice should mean for libraries. Second, we look at ways these differing sets of values can concretely inform how we think about and teach the ACRL Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education to our students.

  • The attendee will leave this session with starting points for reconciling LIS values and social justice ideas with Catholic …

This poster documents the process of conducting an inventory of the current signage in the University of Central Florida’s John C. Hitt Library to determine ways to make the library space accessible to all users. It also presents suggestions for future signs, as the library undergoes a major renovation. This project grew out of my interest in a presentation on “Supporting Neurodiversity in the Academic Library” by Florida State University at the 2019 Florida Library Association conference. The presentation referenced the publication, Project A+: Serving Students with Autism Spectrum Disorder in the Academic …

Considering "Atmosphere" When Facilitating Information Seeking By People With Invisible Disabilities In Public Libraries, Rebecca Muir, Kim M. Thompson, Asim Qayyum Oct 2019

Considering "Atmosphere" When Facilitating Information Seeking By People With Invisible Disabilities In Public Libraries, Rebecca Muir, Kim M. Thompson, Asim Qayyum

Faculty Publications

Twenty percent of Australians reported having a disability in 2015. Disability may occur at any time during the lifespan, however most disabilities are invisible. When a disability is invisible, or not immediately apparent to an outsider, individuals may need to self-identify to access inclusive services, or accommodation may never be offered at all.

When the perceived number of information seekers with a disability is low, information organisations may deem services unnecessary. Considering information access is a human right, information service providers and researchers need to seek low cost and low effort ways to facilitate information access and information seeking behaviors. …

Reporting Research From The Stacks: A Systematic Review Of Practitioner Research Literature In Lis, Jeffrey Discala, Stephanie Trzeclakiewicz, Amelia Anderson Oct 2019

Reporting Research From The Stacks: A Systematic Review Of Practitioner Research Literature In Lis, Jeffrey Discala, Stephanie Trzeclakiewicz, Amelia Anderson

STEMPS Faculty Publications

[First paragraphs]

While we continue to produce theoretical concepts, frameworks, and ideas in library and information studies (LIS), these developments are not being tested and tried ‘on the ground.’ There is an imbalance of research across the disciplines in LIS coming out of the field, rather than out of the academy (Morris & Cahill, 2017).

This study proposes a systematic review of the literature to examine the prevalence and presentation of original research produced by LIS practitioners. Numerous calls have been made for librarians to increase their use of evidence (Luo & McKinney, 2015; Morris & Cahill, 2017; Todd, 2008) …

Elevating Librarian-Mediated Search Services: When 2nd Best Isn't Good Enough, Danielle Westmark, Cynthia M. Schmidt, Teresa L. Hartman

Posters and Presentations: Leon S. McGoogan Health Sciences Library

Objective: To optimize librarian-mediated search services, librarians must consider all aspects of their search service that affect service utilization and efficacy. The library literature provides little information concerning the format in which libraries are providing literature search results and even less on the effect of format on search service utilization.  At our academic health science library, the number of search requests received rose dramatically after we began providing results in RefShare format. RefShare is the collaboration tool available in ProQuest’s RefWorks®.  We wanted to know how other libraries were providing results and whether they had seen format affect search service …

Going It Alone: Successes And Failures Developing A Single-Staff Systematic Review Service, Jenessa Mcelfresh

Southern Chapter/Medical Library Association Annual Conference

Write That Down! The Importance Of Internal Documentation During Project Development, Chris Deems

Bucknell University Digital Scholarship Conference

When creativity sparks and the outpouring of ideas begins, information can be lost amongst the initial excitement. Documentation of these sparks can serve as not only a timeline of project development, but also as a knowledge base and roadmap for the future of the project. This lightening talk will focus on the retrospective importance and value of having documented ideas during the development of a new institutional repository at a small private university. Attendees will learn how the documentation was developed, how it was used to create a workshop for the university's liaison librarians, and the important role that consistent …
