Dda: Are We Meeting Collection Goals Or Vendor Sales Targets?, Debbi A. Smith
Charleston Library Conference
Adelphi University Libraries started an e-book demand-driven acquisitions (DDA) program with Ebrary in January 2014. After one short-term loan a second use triggered a purchase. This trigger was determined by an analysis of how e-books were used in the subscription component of Ebrary, Academic Complete. Titles were added to the pool according to our slip plan profile with YBP. Librarians could also manually add e-book titles to the DDA pool.
To see if our trigger point should be adjusted for our current DDA with ProQuest Ebook Central, statistics were harvested from the Ebrary administrative portal for January 2014 through January …
Understanding And Measuring E-Book Packages: Print Purchasing Patterns And Book Usage, Weijing Yuan, Eva Jurczyk
Understanding And Measuring E-Book Packages: Print Purchasing Patterns And Book Usage, Weijing Yuan, Eva Jurczyk
Charleston Library Conference
When libraries make the decision to transition from print to electronic books, it is often a zero-sum game; if the library is to license the electronic version of a title, it tends not to buy it in print. This study examines print purchase and usage patterns after a large e-book acquisition by the University of Toronto Libraries, when subject selectors had the option to continue to purchase the titles in print. Data on print purchasing patterns, print title circulation, and electronic book use was examined both at the aggregate and the subject level. The study adds evidence to the growing …

An Alternative Method Of Title Authority Control: The Shifted-Authority Control Model For Chinese Classics, Maiko Kimura
An Alternative Method Of Title Authority Control: The Shifted-Authority Control Model For Chinese Classics, Maiko Kimura
Journal of East Asian Libraries
This study investigates the effectiveness of a library-cataloging model developed by the author, namely, the shifted-authority control (SAC) model, for retrievals with fewer omissions in the field of Chinese classics. Since there is almost no title authority data for Chinese classics in Japan, the normal authority control model is unsuitable. To determine whether the SAC model can address this problem, a prototype authority database for searching the titles of Chinese classics was constructed. Then, three bibliographic databases were searched using work/item titles from the prototype database; this facilitated comparisons of the recall performance and the precision of the following three …

The library needs to apply the concept of a learning organization to continue to develop in order to meet the information needs of its users. The library must also continually improve its quality so as not to be left behind from other libraries. To define the construct of learning organizations, Watkins and Marsick provided an integrative concept of learning organizations based on several approaches. From a broader theoretical point of view, Watkins and Marsick proposed the concept of learning activities based on the concept of Dimensions of Learning Organization Questionnaires (DLOQ), which has seven dimensions of factors oriented to people …

Building The Future Of Oer Through Pre-Service Teachers, Liz Thompson, Melissa Wells, Jessica Lantz
Libraries
According to recent literature and research, in-service teacher awareness of Open Educational Resources (OER) and Creative Commons licenses continues to be uneven and relatively low. Providing OER education while teachers are focused on learning in their degree-granting programs could be a sustainable long-term strategy to build awareness of OER with PK-12 instructors. A small research team, consisting of two Librarians, an Instructional Designer, and an Assistant Professor in the College of Education at two higher education institutions, designed a survey and intervention for pre-service teachers to measure and increase their levels of OER awareness. The purpose of the survey is …

This is the slides and talking points for a presentation at the 16th Annual Open Education Conference.
Two hot topics in education are Textbook Affordability (TA) and Open Educational Resources(OER). These initiatives can be under one umbrella at an institution, a collaborative effort, or led by completely different departments.
To assess and improve the current Textbook Affordability website, the Student Success/Textbook Affordability Librarian conducted a review of websites on Textbook Affordability and Open Educational Resources. The review examined websites from US academic institutions who were members of SPARC (the Scholarly Publishing and Academic Resources Coalition). Using this sample group, over …

Choose Your Own Initiative: Exploring The Landscape Of Oer And Textbook Affordability Programs, Matt Ruen, Jacklyn A. Rander, Janelle Yahne

Congratulations! Your college or university is ready to plan (or maybe expand!) a campus-wide initiative focused on Open Educational Resources or other textbook alternatives. But OER and affordability programs vary widely in scope, funding, and strategies, described in articles, book chapters, and news stories. At Grand Valley State University, library OER supporters faced this situation when our faculty senate established a task force to identify university-wide strategies for OER and affordable course materials. To help this task force hit the ground running, we surveyed the landscape of programs at other institutions, identified organizations actively engaged in OER work, and selected …

Pacific Northwest Chapter of MLA Annual Meeting
To characterize efforts surrounding HOM/HS communities across the U.S., we identified the top thirty medical schools in both primary care and research using U.S. News & World Report’s 2019 Rankings. Upon identifying an HOM/HS community, we collected information about the group’s mission; the funding of the group; the membership structure; the typical activities and initiatives; the library’s involvement with the group; and any course offerings related to HOM/HS at the institution.
FINDINGS: Several institutions appeared in both rankings, …
