The Kenyan National Anthem: A Copyright Uncertainty, Elizabeth Oyange -Ngando
The Kenyan National Anthem: A Copyright Uncertainty, Elizabeth Oyange -Ngando
Libraries
In February 2019, a story broke that the Kenyan national anthem had been copyrighted by a British company. An online user had composed a work and attempted to post it on video site YouTube, upon which his video was stuck out for copyright infringement. There was a further claim that the video had been copyrighted by the foreign organization which was then monetizing it to the exclusion of Kenyans. Such an alarmist outlook of intellectual property matters is misguided, and a closer dissection of the copyright framework is necessary.

We describe two institutionally related archives and an online exhibit representing a set of Tibeto-Burman languages of Nepal. These archives and exhibit were built to house materials resulting from documentation of twelve Tibeto-Burman languages in the aftermath of the 2015 Nepal earthquakes. This account includes a detailed discussion of the different materials recorded, and how they were prepared for the collections. This account also provides a comparison of the two different types of archives, the different but complementary functions they serve, and a discussion of the role that online exhibits can play in the context of language documentation archives.

The role of the librarian has shifted along with the information landscape, from the role of information gatekeeper to information guide. As information has become more prolific and accessible, it is more important than ever to teach students how to evaluate the information they discover to determine whether it is appropriate and relevant for their information need.
