Makerspace Culture And Its Impact On Learning, Amy Vecchione Jan 2020

Makerspace Culture And Its Impact On Learning, Amy Vecchione

Library Faculty Publications and Presentations

"Makerspaces are about community. We need to ensure everyone from the community can participate."

—Participant in a Drexel ethnography about makerspaces

Many library workers want to discuss and reflect on makerspaces. A common issue present since makerspaces in libraries first began revolves around what types of equipment a library makerspace should have. This question often comes up as "What should I buy?" or "What equipment do I need?" or "What should I buy to make my makerspace successful?" Individual library workers who are starting to incorporate makerspaces into their libraries or who are trying to deepen, develop, and reinvigorate their …

Building Better Collections Through Relationships: Sharing Expertise During Collection Downsizing, Mary C. Aagard, Nancy Rosenheim, Marlena Hooyboer, Cheri A. Folkner

Library Faculty Publications and Presentations

Boise State University’s Albertsons Library undertook a substantial collection downsizing project in 2017. A survey tool was developed to investigate whether this project would strengthen working relationships between technical services staff and librarians. The survey would allow us to assess the process and its outcomes and gain insight into the emotions of those participating in the project. Survey results showed librarians and staff members had different experiences during the project. Librarians experienced more anxiety during the process than staff. More staff than librarians felt that there was a barrier to sharing their expertise due to their job role. Perceptions of …

OLAC Publications and Training Materials

This best practices document is intended to assist catalogers in creating bibliographic records for objects, which RDA refers to as three dimensional forms, according to RDA instructions. This document provides guidance for the most common object situations encountered in libraries. Each section includes examples that reflect the RDA instructions. A list of resources and a selection of full MARC record examples illustrating common situations encountered in cataloging objects (of various types) completes the document. The Objects Task Force especially worked on the examples to provide a variety of materials that fall bibliographically under Objects. The Task Force found at least …

Making Sound Decisions: Institutional Responses To The Crisis In Audio Preservation, David R. Lewis Jan 2020

Making Sound Decisions: Institutional Responses To The Crisis In Audio Preservation, David R. Lewis

University Libraries Faculty Publications

Some archives have been quick to respond to the crisis in audio preservation brought on by the combined forces of obsolescence and degradation inherent in legacy audio formats and their playback equipment. These archives have undertaken digitization projects for particular collections or, in a few cases, have digitized the bulk of their audio holdings for preservation. Based on an examination of the literature on audio preservation, however, the responses of some institutions—particularly small and midsized institutions—have been stymied by roadblocks related to cost and expertise. Given the limited time available for archives to migrate audio content, this uneven response threatens …

Vardis Fisher's Last Essay, Alessandro Meregaglia Jan 2020

Vardis Fisher's Last Essay, Alessandro Meregaglia

Library Faculty Publications and Presentations

When Vardis Fisher died on July 9, 1968, the Idaho novelist left behind an extensive bibliography: more than two dozen novels, collections of short stories, essays, and poetry, as well as three books written for the Federal Writers’ Project. But he also left behind multiple projects in mid-process. Obituaries and memorials noted that Fisher was at work on a book called The American West: The World’s Greatest Physical Wonderland. Biographers over the ensuing decades also mentioned this incomplete project but didn’t elaborate further.

Inclusion By Design, Amy Vecchione

Library Faculty Publications and Presentations

Maker competencies are critical for courses in every discipline. Within the scope of higher education, many individuals have the perspective that makerspaces involve all STEM disciplines, yet making is a crucial aspect of work in the humanities, the arts, education, and the social sciences. Developing an inclusive practice to attract and retain faculty and students from all areas is critical to the success of a makerspace. When we set out to create the MakerLab at Boise State University, we designed the space with inclusion and equity in mind. Through our process of working with history and philosophy faculty through the …

University Of Alabama At Birmingham Libraries’ Website Design And Launch, Jeff Graveline, Kara Van Abel Jan 2020

University Of Alabama At Birmingham Libraries’ Website Design And Launch, Jeff Graveline, Kara Van Abel

Libraries Professional Work

The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) Libraries merged into a unified entity, launching a single website in 2017. This consolidation improved usability, reduced maintenance costs, and streamlined services for nearly 20,000 students and 2,600 faculty. Usability testing showed the new site enhanced access to library resources and information.

The UAB Libraries website merger succeeded due to strong administrative support, collaboration, and external expertise, though it revealed key areas for improvement: better communication and time management. While the merger preserved individual library identities, Kotter's change framework highlighted missed opportunities in empowering staff and fostering smoother transitions.

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Libraries recently embraced a large-scale initiative to incorporate the values of diversity, inclusion, and social justice (DISJ) into library practices. In early 2017, the MIT collections directorate task force on DISJ released a report with recommendations for embedding DISJ values into the daily work of archives, technical services, preservation, scholarly communications, and collections strategy staff. This chapter focuses on the challenges and opportunities in undertaking a sustained effort to achieve DISJ specifically within technical services. The authors highlight how technical services staff can use their unique position within libraries to dismantle existing structures of …

Leadership, Development, And Expertise: A Qualitative Content Analysis Of Scholarly Communication Librarian Position Announcements, Angela Hackstadt Jan 2020

Leadership, Development, And Expertise: A Qualitative Content Analysis Of Scholarly Communication Librarian Position Announcements, Angela Hackstadt

University Libraries Faculty Scholarship

In 2012, the Association of Research Libraries reported that 95% of libraries identified their libraries as leaders of scholarly communication efforts on campus. While academic librarians have long been responsible for SC issues, institutions have explicitly tasked positions with these responsibilities increasingly over time. This qualitative analysis of position announcements focuses on the ways libraries expect these librarians to engage with SC issues and responsibilities, rather than describing the prevalence of SC-related functions. Specifically, this study asks the following questions: (1) How do administrators communicate leadership expectations of SC librarian roles through job advertisements? (2) In what ways could these …

Make Your Escape: Experiences With Gamified Library Programming, Tim Miller, Kimberly Stelter, Garrett Purchio, Brianne N. Hagen

Cal Poly Humboldt Library

To increase student engagement, the Humboldt State University Library ventured into the realm of gamified programming, exploring several strategies with the goal of trans- forming library outreach and instruction. Our efforts range from simple outreach to highly structured information literacy instruction and workshops that use gamification to encourage students to engage with knowledge practices and dispositions outlined in the ACRL Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education. Using gamified activities in library instruction led us to create lesson plans that are purely game-based, including escape room drop-in sessions where students race against the clock to solve a series of puzzles …

Guide To The Margaret Alexander First Parish Unitarian Church Of East Bridgewater Collection, 1724 - 2002, Undated, Orson Kingsley

Archives & Special Collections Finding Aids

The First Parish of East Bridgewater was established on December 14, 1723, and originally named the East Parish of Bridgewater (the town of East Bridgewater was not incorporated until 1823 when it broke away from Bridgewater). The first minister, Reverend John Angier, a Harvard University graduate, was ordained in 1724 and the first meeting house was constructed the same year. In 1754, while Angier was still minister, a second meeting house was constructed close by to replace the original. Upon completion the original meeting house was removed from the site. In 1767 John Angier’s son, Samuel Angier, was ordained as …

Common Intellectual Experiences And Academic Libraries, Susan Montgomery, Jonathan H. Harwell

Faculty Publications

As discussed throughout this volume, colleges and universities have explored ways to integrate high-impact practices into their campus learning. At Rollins College, a small liberal arts college with a graduate business school in Winter Park, Florida, faculty members have been essential in fostering initiatives that center on creating a common learning experience for their students. As library faculty members at Rollins, we have been heavily involved with the rFLA (Rollins Foundations in the Liberal Arts) curriculum for undergraduates. This chapter presents our work as a case study.

Inviting Students Into The Kitchen: Inquiry-Based Learning As A Critical Thinking Instructional Strategy, Mandi Goodsett Jan 2020

Inviting Students Into The Kitchen: Inquiry-Based Learning As A Critical Thinking Instructional Strategy, Mandi Goodsett

Michael Schwartz Library Publications

This recipe was developed to teach first- or second-year students source evaluation using inquiry-based learning. The method could be modified for a variety of settings, including online. The purpose behind using inquiry-based learning is to develop students’ cognitive habits of questioning, so they are able to transfer the evaluation skills they learn in the library session to other contexts. The evaluation process is focused less on finding quick answers and more on developing meaningful, searching questions about sources that are found as evidence.
