Finding Datasets In Publications: The Syracuse University Approach, Tong Zeng, Daniel E. Acuna Mar 2020

Finding Datasets In Publications: The Syracuse University Approach, Tong Zeng, Daniel E. Acuna

School of Information Studies - Faculty Scholarship

Datasets are critical for scientific research, playing a role in replication, reproducibility, and efficiency. Researchers have recently shown that datasets are becoming more important for science to function properly, even serving as artifacts of study themselves. However, citing datasets is not a common or standard practice in spite of recent efforts by data repositories and funding agencies. This greatly affects our ability to track their usage and importance. A potential solution to this problem is to automatically extract dataset mentions from scientific articles. In this work, we propose to achieve such extraction by using a neural network based on a …

Framework For Change: Creating A Diversity Strategic Plan Within An Academic Library, Renna Tuten Redd, Alydia Sims, Tara Weekes

Publications

In December 2017, Clemson University’s administration via the Assistant Vice President for Strategic Diversity Leadership charged each college and the University Libraries with creating and implementing a diversity strategic plan to align with the ClemsonForward institutional strategic plan and assessment system. Clemson University Libraries answered this charge by creating a Libraries Diversity Plan Working Group (LDPWG), which applied a provided institutional framework to conduct an inventory of current diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives and obtain input, feedback, and support from all the Libraries’ faculty and staff as well as the organization and institution administration to create an ambitious diversity …

Using Open Educational Resources To Empower Student Creators, Jessica Kohout-Tailor, Kelsey Sheaffer Mar 2020

Using Open Educational Resources To Empower Student Creators, Jessica Kohout-Tailor, Kelsey Sheaffer

Publications

As students are asked to complete multimodal assignments in their higher education courses, librarians can guide students to the use of open educational resources (OER), as many librarians are already teaching students about copyright and how to respect intellectual property rights. Two instructional librarians designed a one-shot lesson for first-year composition students around the use of open resources, where the goal of instruction was for students to be empowered with their creative rights and to use the open resources available to them as creators.

Tell Me Your Story: Narrative Inquiry In Lis Research, Emily Ford Mar 2020

Tell Me Your Story: Narrative Inquiry In Lis Research, Emily Ford

Library Faculty and Staff Publications and Presentations

Narrative inquiry, a phenomenological qualitative research methodology, examines individual human experiences—stories. Yet, researchers in Library and information science (LIS)—a human-focused profession—have infrequently used it. This article introduces narrative inquiry and provides a literature review of the few LIS studies utilizing it. Next, it extrapolates on Coralie McCormack’s "storying stories," a multi-faceted approach used to analyze narrative inquiry research data. Finally, the article outlines potential uses for narrative inquiry in LIS research.

Personal Health Information Management By College Students: Patterns Of Inaction, Sujin Kim, Donghee Sinn, Sue Yeon Syn

Institute for Biomedical Informatics Faculty Publications

Introduction. College students' diverse health information management activities are rarely studied within a personal health context. Our study identified an inactive group of college students and their information management activities to understand what factors determine inactivity.

Methods. An online questionnaire was distributed to college students enrolled in a state-owned university in the USA between January and March 2017. A total of eighty-four questions on twelve information management activities grouped by seven types of personal health information were used to identify inactive performers within our student sample. Additionally, potential factors regarding demographics, academics, information resource types, and information workload …

Using Augmented And Virtual Reality In Information Literacy Instruction To Reduce Library Anxiety In Non-Traditional And International Students, Angela Sample

College of Science and Engineering Faculty Research and Scholarship

Throughout the early years, the Oral Roberts University (ORU) Library held a place of pre-eminence on campus. ORU’s founder envisioned the Library as central to all academic function and scholarship. Under the direction of the founding Dean of Learning Resources, the Library was an early pioneer in innovative technologies and methods. However, over time, as the case with many academic libraries, the Library’s reputation as an institution crucial to the academic work on campus had diminished.

A team of librarians is now engaged in programs aimed at repositioning the Library as the university's hub of learning. Toward that goal, the …

Leave The Books On The Shelves: Library Space As Intrinsic Facilitator Of The Reading Experience, James M. Donovan Mar 2020

Leave The Books On The Shelves: Library Space As Intrinsic Facilitator Of The Reading Experience, James M. Donovan

Law Faculty Scholarly Articles

Library literature frequently reports projects to remove print collections and replace them with other amenities for patrons. This project challenges the untested assumption that the physical library itself serves no useful function to users unless they are actively consulting books from the shelves. The alternative hypothesis is that readers benefit from the mere act of studying while in a book-rich environment.

To test this possibility, ten subjects completed SAT-style reading comprehension tests in both a traditional library environment, and a renovated chapel that strongly resembles library space except for lacking books. Results provide a reasonable basis to support an expectation …

Hosting Inspec On Engineering Village Or Web Science: A Case Study In Comparing Database Platforms, Jay Thomas Mcallister Iii, Nancy Stephanie Diaz

University Libraries Faculty Publications and Presentations

Purpose – As library budgets continue to constrict, librarians will need to become more familiar with comparing database host platforms. This paper aims to compare Inspec on Elsevier’s Engineering Village (EV) and Clarivate’s Web of Science (WOS) from a novice user experience. The main objectives are to identify some R1 institutions that subscribe to Inspec and highlight some of the key differences between the two platforms. Design/methodology/approach – Information on Inspec was gathered from various sources as well as the home website, IET, and the host platform websites of Elsevier and Clarivate Analytics. Data was also collected from brochures and …

Promoting Full Utilization Of Library Resources For Students & Patrons With Disabilities: A Conceptual Approach Mar 2020

Promoting Full Utilization Of Library Resources For Students & Patrons With Disabilities: A Conceptual Approach

The Southeastern Librarian

This exploratory conceptual research highlights federal mandates, policies, and principles that protect the rights of library users with disabilities. According to (ASGCLA, 2019, para. 2), persons with disabilities can be impacted by “economic inequity, illiteracy, cultural isolation, discrimination in education and employment” while participating in various daily activities. In December 2018 it was reported that 40.7 million Americans were living with disabilities (U.S. Census Bureau, 2018, July 26). Given the vast number of Americans with disabilities, library science professionals will appreciate the urgency for maintaining convenient, accessible, and welcoming environments in libraries for persons with disabilities. The goal of the …

Connecting With Undergraduate Research: A Pilot To Tailor Data Literacy Workshops In A Library-Led Summer Undergraduate Research Experience Program, Chao Cai, Megan Sapp Nelson, Chaonan Liu

Libraries Faculty and Staff Presentations

Purdue University Libraries, in collaboration with a research unit, recently proposed to establish a summer undergraduate research experiences (URE) program with an emphasis on data literacy that serves students with limited access to research resources, i.e. underrepresented minorities, students from rural area and community colleges, and students with disabilities. The proposed URE professional development activities related to data literacy, specially data management and data ethics, are designed and tailored to this minority serving URE program based on the recommendations synthesized using reflections from librarians who have taught in data literacy workshops in similar URE programs. In recent years, many federal …
