Copyright, Fair Use, Scholarly Communication, etc.

Over the next decade, Open Access (OA) is likely to become the default in scholarly publishing. Yet, as commercial publishers develop new models for capturing revenue (and as policy initiatives like Plan S remain reluctant to challenge their centrality), researchers, librarians, and other concerned observers are beginning to articulate a set of values that critically engages the industry-driven project of broadening access to specialist scholarship. While alternative genealogies exist, conversations about OA in the Global North have largely been concerned with the model of the STEM disciplines, lately shifting to focus on the development of infrastructural fixes that transcend traditional …

Data, Stats, Go: Navigating The Intersections Of Cataloging, E-Resource, And Web Analytics Reporting, Rachel S. Evans, Wendy Moore, Jessica Pasquale, Andre Davison Jul 2020

Data, Stats, Go: Navigating The Intersections Of Cataloging, E-Resource, And Web Analytics Reporting, Rachel S. Evans, Wendy Moore, Jessica Pasquale, Andre Davison

Presentations

Do you trudge through gathering statistics at fiscal or calendar year-end? Do you wonder why you track certain things, thinking many seem outdated or irrelevant? Many places seem to keep counting certain statistics because "that's what they've always done." For e-resources, how do you integrate those with physical counts and reconcile the variations (updated e-resources versus re-cataloged physical items)? What about repository downloads and other web traffic? The quantity of stats that libraries track is staggering and keeps growing. This program will encourage attendees to stop and evaluate what and why they're gathering data and help identify possible alternatives to …

An Examination Of Seed Libraries Across Two Academic Institutions, Holly M. Dean, Jennifer Mezick Jul 2020

An Examination Of Seed Libraries Across Two Academic Institutions, Holly M. Dean, Jennifer Mezick

Urban Library Journal

Seed libraries provide new and engaging outreach possibilities while facilitating healthy sustainable communities. Regardless of the type of institution or organization, seed libraries can facilitate food access and social and environmental sustainability, foster community, and open doors for new partnerships. This article examines the path to develop seed libraries in higher education at two institutions, which in their early stages have proven successful in meeting their missions. The initial seed library was developed at a community college, which inspired and influenced the establishment of an experiential learning initiative at a tier one university. Together these two programs are collaborating across …

A Glimpse Into Metadata Inclusiveness: A Preliminary Literature Review Using Nvivo, Sai Deng

Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

This study investigates social and metadata inclusiveness, on whose voices are underrepresented, how biases are presented, in which way and which domain, and how it affects the library community. It is based on a preliminary analysis of literature in this topic, and the text analyzed includes title, author, abstract and keywords for 26 articles and books. Their bibliographic information was extracted from my Zotero library to NVivo, and over 200 nodes were coded from the different literature, with 5, 6, 10 or more nodes for each literature entry. Additional names were added when terms in the text didn’t seem to …

Yard: A Tool For Curating Research Outputs, Limor Peer, Joshua Dull

Copyright, Fair Use, Scholarly Communication, etc.

Repositories increasingly accept research outputs and associated artifacts that underlie reported findings, leading to potential changes in the demand for data curation and repository services. This paper describes a curation tool that responds to this challenge by economizing and optimizing curation efforts. The curation tool is implemented at Yale University’s Institution for Social and Policy Studies (ISPS) as YARD. By standardizing the curation workflow, YARD helps create high quality data packages that are findable, accessible, interoperable, and reusable (FAIR) and promotes research transparency by connecting the activities of researchers, curators, and publishers through a single pipeline.

Finding A Fit: Biological Science Doctoral Students’ Selection Of A Principal Investigator And Research Laboratory, Michelle A. Maher, Annie M. Wofford, Josipa Roksa, David F. Feldon

Instructional Technology and Learning Sciences Faculty Publications

In the laboratory-based disciplines, selection of a principal investigator (PI) and research laboratory (lab) indelibly shapes doctoral students’ experiences and educational outcomes. Framed by the theoretical concept of person–environment fit from within a socialization model, we use an inductive, qualitative approach to explore how a sample of 42 early-stage doctoral students enrolled in biological sciences programs made decisions about fitting with a PI and within a lab. Results illuminated a complex array of factors that students considered in selecting a PI, including PI relationship, mentoring style, and professional stability. Further, with regard to students’ lab selection, peers and research projects …

Identifying, Understanding And Combating Complex Inequality: The Fight To Make The Invisible, Visible, Rachel Whitt

Black History at UNM

Dr. Nancy López, professor of sociology at UNM and director of the Institute for the Study of “Race” and Social Justice, explains the role of complex inequality in fueling social unrest. Complex inequality is rooted in decades of disparities towards minorities, particularly Blacks, Latinx, people of color and Native American communities. López outlines how invisible, deeply embedded injustices are common practice in the United States citing research that shows there are compounding challenges facing marginalized communities. These hurdles are multifaceted and cannot be distilled down to single data points. Recognizing the experience of marginality is layered and must be viewed …

The article expands the previous call for libraries to take a stand for Black Lives. We describe the events of 2020 (a global pandemic, multiple murders of unarmed Black people, and the consequent global protests) and responses from …

Open Access Uptake By Universities Worldwide, Nicolas Robinson-Garcia, Rodrigo Costas, Thed N. Van Leeuwen

Copyright, Fair Use, Scholarly Communication, etc.

The implementation of policies promoting the adoption of an open science (OS) culture must be accompanied by indicators that allow monitoring the uptake of such policies and their potential effects on research publishing and sharing practices. This study presents indicators of open access (OA) at the institutional level for universities worldwide. By combining data from Web of Science, Unpaywall and the Leiden Ranking disambiguation of institutions, we track OA coverage of universities' output for 963 institutions. This paper presents the methodological challenges, conceptual discrepancies and limitations and discusses further steps needed to move forward the discussion on fostering OA and …
