Managing User Needs And Librarian Expectations: Results Of A Survey Of User Behaviors In Summon, Kristin Rogers Sep 2020

Managing User Needs And Librarian Expectations: Results Of A Survey Of User Behaviors In Summon, Kristin Rogers

The Southeastern Librarian

Since 2016, the University of Mississippi Libraries has used ExLibris’ Summon for their discovery service, locally known as One Search. During the implementation, customizations for the search results page were determined by a committee of librarians. As new settings and customizations were implemented over the years, librarians began to question if certain settings were appropriate or if the patrons were actually using them. An IRB approved survey was distributed asking library patrons about their use of One Search while library employees were asked to answer how they perceived patrons used it. Results showed the differences between library employee perception of …

Can You See Me Now?: Engaging Distance Learners Through Virtual Reference Consultations, Lauren Puzier, Camille Chesley, Amanda M. Lowe Sep 2020

Can You See Me Now?: Engaging Distance Learners Through Virtual Reference Consultations, Lauren Puzier, Camille Chesley, Amanda M. Lowe

University Libraries Faculty Scholarship

Research consultations continue to be a valuable service offered by academic libraries for students who are able to visit the library, however, most students enrolled in online degree programs or considering enrollment have limited access to campus services. To address this, the authors designed and tested a virtual reference consultation service in their library for distance learners and graduate students. This article outlines a practical approach for designing and initiating a virtual research consultation service pilot, providing equitable access to library services and a positive user experience for distance learners.

Going The Distance: Flipped Classrooms And The Research Appointment

The Southeastern Librarian

This case study examines the use of online help guides and their potential impact in helping graduate distance students prepare for a scheduled meeting with a reference librarian. Students taking a dissertation planning course were surveyed to determine if a custom LibGuide and accompanying class assignments prepared them for in-depth research during their meeting with a reference librarian. Findings revealed that the majority of students believed that this flipped-classroom style approach had a positive impact on their research abilities and skills. Recommendations are provided for online help resources that can be adapted for use in online and hybrid courses.

Imagining A Climate Of Equity Through A Critical Theory Of Love: Using Cpar To Identify Guiding Principles That Humanize Library Work, Rachel M. Barnett, Matthew A. Witenstein

Roesch Library Staff Publications

Diversity is a core value of the American Library Association and diversity standards including cultural competencies have been adopted by the Association of College and Research Libraries. Nevertheless, academic libraries still have obstacles to overcome to embody these principles. Minorities continue to be underrepresented in the field and many encounter barriers within library cultures where cultural competency is lacking and micro aggressions are pervasive and invisible to many white colleagues. This study uses critical participatory action research to identify ways a library diversity and inclusion team can support library employees engaging in equity-minded work at a private, predominantly white Catholic …

Creating Collaborative Subject Guides For Multi-Insitutional Digital Collection: A Case Study From The Louisiana Digital Library, Sl Ziegler, Leah Powell

Faculty Publications

This case study focuses on the development of subject guides for the Louisiana Digital Library (LDL), a state-wide digital repository for digital cultural heritage. While subject guides are always important for navigating large collections, during the state-wide shutdown of libraries due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the need for the guides was greater than ever. In keeping with the LDL’s multi-institutional and collaborative nature, representatives from seven Louisiana-based institutions responded to an open call to form a rapid-response working group. Within three weeks, ten guides were developed and published. Equally important, an iterative workflow for building and updating guides was established …

This case study describes a multi-year project to reclassify the University of Nevada, Las Vegas’ (UNLV) University Archives. The steps included moving away from the existing record series classification and implementing a new collection classification schema that will improve discovery and access. This study outlines steps taken during the survey and describes how staff analyzed existing collection records and metadata in order to create more cohesive intellectual control of archival materials across the Special Collections and Archives Division. Mary, Undoer Of Knots: Unraveling Best Practices For Unwanted Donations And Deaccessioned Collection Items In A Catholic Library, Sarah Burke Cahalan, Kayla Harris

Marian Library Faculty Publications

When humorist Tommy Tighe tweeted that he is “so Catholic I bury old parish bulletins instead of throwing them out whenever I clean out the van, just in case,”1 many on #CatholicTwitter felt a twinge of recognition. In addition to the human tendency to accumulate material things, there is also legitimate concern in a Catholic context about discarding materials associated with the practice of faith. The parish bulletin is an extreme example; we can safely relegate that to the recycle bin once we have read about the ladies’ breakfast and the Christmas wreath fundraiser. In the routine practice of the …

Big Data: Managing Large Scale Metadata Projects In A Teleworked Environment, Rachel S. Evans, Mary Miller, Kathleen Carter, Kelley Ansley

Presentations

Beginning in March of 2020, Mary Miller and Kathleen Carter coordinated the work of over 100 University of Georgia Libraries students, faculty, and staff on remote metadata projects for the Brown Media Archives. The great majority of these UGA employees were not catalogers, were not familiar with metadata concepts, and had never visited the Brown Media Archives. Yet, in a four-month period, they successfully completed a quantity of work that would have taken Brown Media two and a half years to accomplish at regular staffing levels. Miller and Carter will share what they got right, what they got wrong and …
