Photo Essay: On The Street, John G. Hopper Oct 1974

Photo Essay: On The Street, John G. Hopper

IUSTITIA

When people speak of crime in the streets, they invariably refer to cold statistics or a report from a governmental agency as a source of information. There is however another source of information on the subject-that of personal experience. It is the unique experience that urban police sometimes refer to as being "on the street". The following is this photographer's impression of spending several winter nights on the streets with an urban police force.

Kentucky Parole Officers: An Inquiry Into The Effect Of Residential Background On Their Works Styles, Virginia Cleveland Aug 1974

Kentucky Parole Officers: An Inquiry Into The Effect Of Residential Background On Their Works Styles, Virginia Cleveland

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Using the population of Kentucky state parole officers as the focus of this thesis, work styles were studied. The work styles of twenty-eight rural parole officers were compared with the work styles of twenty-two urban officers. The Fisher Exact Statistical Test was used to test differences between these groups. Rural officers were significantly more likely than urban officers to go out of their offices to meet with their parolees. Urban officers had had a significantly greater number of parolees waiting in their offices at one time, than the rural officers had. The length of the average meeting did not differ …

Feminism And The Legalization Of Prostitution: How Far Down The River?, Marilyn C. Zilli Apr 1974

Feminism And The Legalization Of Prostitution: How Far Down The River?, Marilyn C. Zilli

IUSTITIA

One of the most telling issues on the state of the women's movement today is that of the legalization of prostitution. It would be inappropriate to say that the issue has caused a breach in the ranks: the term is inapplicable to a movement which has never claimed coherency and which has, in fact, consistently demonstrated an inability to reconcile the views of its various factions. The prostitution issue is important, rather, precisely because it underscores these differences of analysis and tactics which have appeared in other areas and the splits between white middle class liberal women, radical feminists, marxist …

Predicting Delinquent Sub-Types With The Social History Questionnaire, Charles S. Sulcer Jan 1974

Predicting Delinquent Sub-Types With The Social History Questionnaire, Charles S. Sulcer

Masters Theses

A major problem encountered in the juvenile courts concerns the large number of young offenders placed on probation, as well as the seriousness of their violations. Representative studies by Jenkins and Glickman (1947), Hathaway and Monachesi (1953), and Shinohara and Jenkins (1967) have pointed out the complexities of delinquent behavior by indicating that most legal authorities are often unable to determine who will repeat illegal acts.

This problem necessitates some objective approach toward identifying potential repeaters and non-repeaters. Such a technique would be useful in studying the early stages of delinquent behavior and provide a means of studying the growing …
