Leadership And Adult Development: A Study Of Higher Education Academic Administrators, Anna R. Newton Edd
Dissertations
Leadership studies have been subject to increasing criticism. At the same time, many groups and institutions are claiming that leaders are needed in today's world, more than ever before. More specifically, higher education institutions and their critics are attempting to identify the leaders and leadership behaviors that will benefit colleges and universities. A recurring comment about leadership studies is that they often cannot be understood or applied by the leadership practitioners. Is there an aspect of leadership and the human experience that can yield information to improve practitioners' understanding of leadership? This exploratory study used survey research methods, first to …

Executive Effectiveness Profile Instrument Development And Validation, John W. Hanes Edd
Executive Effectiveness Profile Instrument Development And Validation, John W. Hanes Edd
Dissertations
As executives ascend in organizational structures, they become less likely to receive objective feedback from superiors, peers, and subordinates regarding the effects of their behavior within their organizations. This loss of feedback can contribute to perceptual blind spots within the executives. Such blind spots and their ensuing negative consequences have been found to be a major cause of executive derailment. Despite the enormous value of feedback, there is a paucity of proven methodologies for providing executives with constructive feedback on the effectiveness of their behavior. Consequently, the objective of this research was to design and validate an instrument that measures …

Shared Organizational Culture And Leader Communication: A Study Of Correlation, Anthony F. Smith Edd

Jepson School of Leadership Studies articles, book chapters and other publications
The Diné (Navajo) people have a representative/legislative form of government modeled loosely after the American system. The present governmental structure, established in 1938 by the Secretary of Interior, is outlined in the Navajo Tribal Code. This article encompasses the background of the Code, describes the efforts of tribal and federal officials to enact a tribal constitution, and discusses the key functions of government: legislative, executive and judicial. It also examines the various subunits of government operating within the reservation. Finally, it contains recommendations that, if enacted, could strengthen and legitimize Navajo government.

Emergent Leadership In A Classroom Situation: As Affected By Birth Order, Gender, Age, And Parental Marital Status, Mary Christine Foley
Masters Theses
This thesis studied leadership with the variables of birth order, parental marital status, age, and gender in mind. Four hypotheses were developed around each of those variables. Other areas that were developed included a review of the literature concerning birth order and birth order characteristic tendencies; parental marital status and its effect of children; and general leadership principles. The results obtained from the experiment proved nonsignificant in all four hypotheses. A survey was also given to the subjects to assess their attitudes on leadership characteristics.

The Diné (Navajos) inhabit a vast land of beauty and grace. It is a sprawling territory, bounded by sacred mountains and great rivers. The Navajo Reservation, first delineated in the 1868 treaty, has nearly quadrupled in size since then through some twenty-five additions. Today, the Diné land base is some 25,000 square miles (sixteen million acres roughly), encompassing a large portion of northeastern Arizona, a part of northwester New Mexico, and some 1,900 square miles in southeastern Utah. This tremendous stretch of land, the largest Indian reservation in the county, is slightly larger than the state of West Virginia.

With the exception of a few Asian-American women, there continues to be fewer women from ethnically-diverse cultures in high status careers. Yet little is known about the specific variables which affect the life planning and future aspirations of young, gifted black, Hispanic and Pan/Asian women. Studies conducted and reported have focused primarily on white, middle-class adolescents or college students. The importance of this study is the addition to the sparse amount of existing literature related to the influences affecting the future life planning of the intellectually-gifted, ethnically-diverse, adolescent female. The purpose of this case study was to examine and assess …

Leader Communication And Organizational Culture: A Field Study, Shay Sayre Edd
Dissertations
Corporate culture, the object of considerable media attention since 1980, has been identified as an important consideration for improving performance. This research looks at the leadership and communication aspects of culture, exploring the extent to which the leader's ideology influences the behaviors of organization members. Conducted in a $30 million Southern California company of 225 employees, the study focuses on a female general manager who, in the founder's absence, has …

Organizational politics impacts decision making, leadership, policy implementation, change, and individual effectiveness. Although generally acknowledged as a reality of organizational life, political behavior is misunderstood, certainly a highly sensitive topic and furthermore, scholarly literature decries the paucity of empirical research on the topic. Consequently, the purpose of this research was to design and validate an instrument, in the in-basket simulation format, that measures an individual's political effectiveness. The instrument's proposed purpose was the exploration of an individual's political behavior for two reasons: (1) as a new research tool to facilitate quantitative and qualitative research; and (2) as a developmental activity …
