Preface

National Youth Leadership Symposium Monographs

The University of Northern Iowa's Youth Leadership Studies program was established to foster professionalism in the youth development field through the encouragement of creative and research activities. One major endeavor toward that end has been the conduct of an annual National Youth Leadership Symposium. Begun in 1990, the Symposium has served as a working conference that focuses on solving practical problems for the emerging profession. The purpose of the Symposium is to serve as an agent of change by raising questions, examining circumstances, making decisions and taking actions that realize that common ground and agreement needed to contribute to the …

Creating A Foundation: Principles Of Practice (Panel Presentation), Shepard Zeldin, Rebecca Lane, Lourdes Sullivan, Paul Watson, Wendy Wheeler

National Youth Leadership Symposium Monographs

If youth development is a profession, then it follows that the attitudes and skills needed by youth workers should be similar across specific program settings. This session explored this assumption by discussing the staff competencies needed for quality service delivery. First, lessons from ongoing "cross-program" research were discussed and then a panel composed of a variety of youth serving organization discussed similarities and differences in essential staff competencies.

Youth development as a profession was discussed in terms of staff competencies in the panel that discussed best practices (Creating a Foundation: Principles of Practice). During this session about community perspectives, a panel of community youth development professionals discussed their perspectives of the profession and their successes in the youth development area. In addition, the audience was engaged in discourse about topics presented throughout the Symposium. The following is an edited version of the transcript of that panel discussion.

Why Youth Participate In Youth Programs, Rudy D. Jones Jan 1995

Why Youth Participate In Youth Programs, Rudy D. Jones

National Youth Leadership Symposium Monographs

Do you think you have great programs, yet youth are not participating? Are they staying away because they do not know or cannot afford to come? Or do they not come because they do not want to? This session explored reasons youth do not participate in different programs or activities and examined strategies to encourage their involvement. Approaches for identifying and accommodating youth needs were presented. Why are we here at the Symposium? I firmly believe we must address the "whys" and "why nots" before we can more accurately and effectively address the "how to."

Creating Constructive Chaos!!! Cpr For Effective Programming, Don Degraaf Jan 1995

Creating Constructive Chaos!!! Cpr For Effective Programming, Don Degraaf

National Youth Leadership Symposium Monographs

Programs should be developed with specific benefits, values and goals in mind. For it is only through an underlying commitment to fostering these benefits that they will be achieved. With this in mind some staff might respond by saying "This all seems a bit heavy! I thought our programs were supposed to be fun." Fun and goal oriented programming can be synonymous if staff understand the role of Creating Constructive Chaos for participants in our programs.

In working with youth we are quite familiar with the concept of chaos. In fact, there are times when chaos seems to reign no …

It Takes A Whole Village ... (R.J. Mcelroy Lecture), Charles Jordan Jan 1995

It Takes A Whole Village ... (R.J. Mcelroy Lecture), Charles Jordan

National Youth Leadership Symposium Monographs

It takes whole villages and it takes all members of the community, regardless of race, creed, color, neighborhood for that village to be whole. People need unimpeded access to that wholeness.

Take a look at that chart (see Figure 1). With the African proverb, It takes a whole village to raise a child, I think we stand a chance of recognizing that victory will demand all hands on deck; therefore, this must be an intergenerational pursuit. We will not see the total solution so we have to pass something on to the next generation, that is the legacy. It also …

Toward A Youth Development Profession, Karen Pittman, Elaine Johnson Jan 1995

Toward A Youth Development Profession, Karen Pittman, Elaine Johnson

National Youth Leadership Symposium Monographs

Earlier in this Symposium I talked about what I thought were some of the issues facing the profession and there was a very relevant discussion this morning about the attributes of the profession. Perhaps in this room there is a rather nonrepresentative sample of people who, if I say, "Are you a youth development professional?" will say, "yes." When you tell people what you do, how many people use that term or something close to it when they describe what they do? Two. How many use "youth worker?" Four. Any other generic term that says what you do? Recreation Director, …

Youth Leadership: Commitment For What? (Keynote Address), Cheryl Mabey

National Youth Leadership Symposium Monographs

I thought the way I would begin is to share with you the defining moment of when I came to understand that I needed to do business differently. One of the courses I teach is a public policy class, and I had a very bright group of students whose assignment was to read Shore's book, Within Our Reach. They were to develop a working paper which they would present to community and political leaders as the capstone experience for the seminar on, "Moving Toward a Youth Policy'' in Los Angeles. That was scheduled, the students were doing brilliant work, and …

Developmental Stages Of Youth: Implications For Programming, Dd Gass Jan 1995

Developmental Stages Of Youth: Implications For Programming, Dd Gass

National Youth Leadership Symposium Monographs

As we examine and explore the programs that we will be developing in our agencies and organizations, one of the factors in the program development process is examining youth age characteristics. The developmental stages of youth have been examined in a variety of ways by educators and research analysts. We will explore the stages of youth development as taken from, The Primary Program: Growing and Learning in the Heartland (1993). This is a primary level education curriculum developed by the Iowa Department of Education, Iowa Area Education Agencies and the Nebraska Office of Child Development-Department of Education.

The Primary Program …

Creativity And Staff Morale, Patricia Fultz Jan 1995

Creativity And Staff Morale, Patricia Fultz

National Youth Leadership Symposium Monographs

Marlene Wilson devotes an entire chapter of her book, Survival Skills for Managers, to the topic of creativity. It is because she feels that it is central to the survival of individuals, organizations, and society. In her book, Wilson includes these observations about creativity: 1) Rollo May defines creativity as "the encounter of the intensively conscious person with his or her world." He states that today we have plenty of talent, but we lack passion (a strong sense of dedication). 2) James Austin observed that "the best creative work represents passion fulfilled, whereas a neurosis may be thought of as …

Attributes Of A Profession, Anne Federlein Jan 1995

Attributes Of A Profession, Anne Federlein

National Youth Leadership Symposium Monographs

This morning as we think of ourselves as professionals, we need to reflect on our training. Our training today, unfortunately, looks very much like the training most of us went through years ago. Yet we are living in a changing world. We are training students to be professionals in a world that you and I have never seen. We have absolutely no idea at this point what the year 2090 is going to look like because we are changing the face of all of our professions, even though we are all under this "youth leadership/ early childhood/human services" profession. In …

Affinity Group Summary, Anne Federlein

National Youth Leadership Symposium Monographs

Symposium participants were assigned to one of four affinity groups working sessions focused on examining the youth development profession. The four groups were color coded and charged with the following: 1) Recognizing the professional image (red) - a public relations tool to describe the components of a youth development profession in a format suitable for a public relations campaign which "sells" the profession to others who need to know about it. 2) Identifying the competencies of the professional - the resume' (blue) to develop a resume' detailing the variety of qualifications of an individual suited for work in the youth …

Leadership In Youth Development (R.J. Mcelroy Lecture), Karen Pittman

National Youth Leadership Symposium Monographs

It is a pleasure to be here. I believe I had the honor of being here for the first Symposium, this is now the fourth. In addition, members of my staff have come to play various roles in the second and third symposia. So, I think we may have a relationship going that we will try to continue. The topic of the Symposium is a very critical one and I hope that in the next half hour to 45 minutes I can shed some light on why I think it is so important. The theme of this McElroy presentation is …

Leading Change In The Healthcare Industry : Sentara Health Systems, Norfolk, Virginia, Heather S. Heitz

Honors Theses

After going through the steps of implementing a change in Sentara Health Systems, I learned that using my visionary and participatory leadership skills contributed to my success in leading a change in the organization. First, I used my visionary leadership skills to encourage each individual to envision processes, to support each other, and to use resources which would motivate the group to do something that they wanted to do. Also, I used a participatory leadership to ensure that the subordinates were involved in the group's goals throughout the change process. By empowering people to have responsibility when changes are made …

Knowing And Programming With Style, Debra J. Jordan, Sherril L. York Jan 1995

Knowing And Programming With Style, Debra J. Jordan, Sherril L. York

National Youth Leadership Symposium Monographs

In a world where youth programs compete for participants administrators and programmers constantly strive for new and creative programming ideas as well as new ways of offering traditional programs. The state of the art in youth programming demands that youth service workers be in tune with the people who are being served, and not merely the programs which are being provided. This includes understanding differences - cultural, regional, personal, etc.

Program administrators and leaders need to recognize that everyone has differences which are neither good nor bad - they are simply different. Too often value and worth are attributed to …

This study's purpose was to increase understanding and meaning of the lived experience of moral commitment as practiced by participants at the time of the study, not in retrospective. Phenomenology was the research methodology selected to elicit participants' understanding of moral commitment through in-depth interviews. Study participants were referred using selection criteria which included: demonstration of sustained selfless service to others outside of one's work life and a demonstrated tendency to inspire others to engage in similar service. The four women and six men in the study, ranging from 33 to 78 years of age, represented blue-collar and professional occupations. …
