Servant-Leadership And Organizational Outcomes: A Review Of The Literature, Jeffrey L. Mcclellan Jan 2010

Servant-Leadership And Organizational Outcomes: A Review Of The Literature, Jeffrey L. Mcclellan

International Journal of Servant-Leadership

Servant-leadership is too soft, too touchy-feely, too abstract! How can you measure its effects? Does it really make a difference in the life ofthe leader or the follower? What about productivity and profitability? What is the impact of servant-leadership on organizational objectives? After all, organizations exist to make money and they cannot meet the needs of people unless they do? So, does this philosophy of leadership really make a difference? These are the questions that critics and potential advocates alike lobby against the philosophy and practice of servant-leadership. To those who vehemently practice and defend the concept, these questions may …

Greenleaf’S Servant-Leadership And Quakerism: A Nexus, Carolyn Crippen Jan 2010

Greenleaf’S Servant-Leadership And Quakerism: A Nexus, Carolyn Crippen

International Journal of Servant-Leadership

Two hundred copies of a small thirty-seven page booklet with a bright orange cardstock cover were published in 1970. The author, Robert Kiefner Greenleaf (1904-1990), introduced a paradox in The Servant as Leader (Greenleaf, 1970) and presented a new approach to leadership including followership and service. Today there is an abundance of literature about the concept of leadership in general, and specifically, about particular types of leadership, for instance, contingency leadership (Fielder & Chemers, 1974); moral leadership (Sergiovanni, 1992); distributive leadership (Harris & Muijs, 2005); lateral leadership (Fisher & Sharp, 2004); shared leadership (Pearce & Conger, 2003); and transformational leadership …

Igwebuike: Creating A Community Of Strength, Peter O. Amah Jan 2010

Igwebuike: Creating A Community Of Strength, Peter O. Amah

International Journal of Servant-Leadership

Team building is a backbone of any successful community. According to Pace, Smith, and Mills (1991) individuals who come together with a common agenda, planning, sharing goals, and reporting to a common superordinate, work together in the path of growth. The people of Arochukwu in Southeast Nigeria called this igwebuike. The word igwebuike etymologically came from the three Igbo words Igwe, bu, and ike which mean a community of strength. Arochukwu, an Igbo-speaking community, believes that it is the nature of a community to be strong. This community strength lies in the willingness for all members to play active roles …

Enacting Servant-Leadership From The Inside Out, Michael Bell, Sylvia Habel Jan 2010

Enacting Servant-Leadership From The Inside Out, Michael Bell, Sylvia Habel

International Journal of Servant-Leadership

The Character of the Servant-Leader From the very conception of the term, writing about servant-leadership was focused on the individual who would be leader (Greenleaf, 1970). This defining feature, the focus on the servant-leader's character, is at the core of ongoing research (Laub, 1999; Abel, 2000; Russell, 2001; Russell & Stone, 2002; Sendjaya & Sarros, 2002; Patterson, 2003; Stone, Russell, & Patterson, 2004; Page & Wong, 2003, 2005), and this paper proposes a way toward developing a servant-leader's character through deliberate action, thinking, and visioning.

Parental Leadership: The Mary Poppins Metaphor, Brad Van Alstyne Jan 2010

Parental Leadership: The Mary Poppins Metaphor, Brad Van Alstyne

Collected Faculty Scholarship

Existing theories on leadership are usually based on efforts we are familiar with in which leaders are easily defined (work, war, sports, etc). Little analysis to date has been placed on the role of parents as leaders outside of the social sciences where the focus of the research is usually an offshoot of psychology or childhood development. The parent as leader is a unique focus in that there are several qualities of the parent role that are quite different from that of the typical supervisory roles we normally discuss, while at the same time it would be foolish to think …

A Gift In Exile: Leadership And Creativity In Babette’S Feast, Daniel Loftin Jan 2010

A Gift In Exile: Leadership And Creativity In Babette’S Feast, Daniel Loftin

International Journal of Servant-Leadership

I am a storyteller. One of my friends said about me that I think all sorrows can be borne if you put them into a story or tell a story about them, and perhaps this is not entirely untrue. To me, the explanation of life seems to be its melody, its pattern. And I feel in life such an infinite, truly inconceivable fantasy. -Isak Dinesen Isak Dinesen considered any work of art as a manifestation of its own unique inner laws (Whissen, 1973, p. 67). If we accept the quotation above as given, it is germane to ask what constitutes …

Servant-Leadership At Forty: The Case For Contemporary Research, Dan Parrish, Kathleen Zimmerman-Oster Jan 2010

Servant-Leadership At Forty: The Case For Contemporary Research, Dan Parrish, Kathleen Zimmerman-Oster

International Journal of Servant-Leadership

Kent Keith (2008) begins his book, The Case for Servant-leadership, with the following paragraph: This book is about creating a better world. There does not have to be so much pain and suffering, so much war and violence, so much starvation and disease, so many crushed dreams and untapped talents, so many problems unsolved and so many opportunities ignored. The world does not have to be like this. (p. IX; emphasis in original) Keith expresses a sentiment that is commonly held among adherents to servant-leadership: the world needs healing, and individuals, group members, and organizational leaders are each responsible for …

The Journey Of Servant-Leadership, Larry C. Spears Jan 2010

The Journey Of Servant-Leadership, Larry C. Spears

International Journal of Servant-Leadership

With great joy, I want to commend all our authors in this year's journal. The depth of thought and willingness to enter the crucible of life with an enduring vision of servant leadership have been very inspiring to me. The articles collected in this volume represent many countries, varied points of view, and a vast landscape of human courage. In my own life, I recently decided to take a purposeful voyage of my own through a landscape that has captured my imagination for some years. As the song says, I took a trip on Route 66. The famed American highway …

Servant-Leadership: A Response To Downsizing, Mark Mcvay Jan 2010

Servant-Leadership: A Response To Downsizing, Mark Mcvay

International Journal of Servant-Leadership

Downsizing and devaluation of the human asset are traditional responses to difficult economic times. Traditional approaches that support this method, command and control or authoritarian leadership models, do not deliver the benefits promised as a result of downsizing. Of great significance in the current context of complexity and dissonance, servant-leadership is a valid alternative and companies that are supportive of Robert Greenleaf's characteristics of servant-leadership have demonstrated positive results in the marketplace. In this time of economic turmoil, the world cries out for servantleadership. The sad truth is that "many companies treat their people as disposable. At the first sign …

The Principles Of Servant-Leadership = The Principles Of Forgiveness, Paul Nakai

International Journal of Servant-Leadership

On an overcast summer day in 1944, Sgt. Jimmy Makino was with his squad on patrol in a field outside of Livorno, Italy. Suddenly, they were under heavy German cannon fire. To Jimmy's right, Pfc. Kiyoto Nakai fell to the ground. Shrapnel had entered Nakai's left eye socket, torn out the bridge of his nose, and continued on through his right eye. Another piece of shrapnel injured his left ear as well as wounding him in a number of other areas of his body. That field in Italy would be the last thing that Nakai would see. Kiyoto Nakai was …

Computerized Provider Order Entry Implementation: Provider And Hospital Leadership Impacts On Success, Elizabeth J. Walker

Theses and Graduate Projects

Healthcare organizations are consistently exhausting efforts to improve their patient safety standards and outcomes, especially those that are regulated by federal and state agencies. Many healthcare organizations have chosen to implement an Electronic Health Record (EHR) to facilitate better decision-making and faster tumaround for providers, thus improving patient safety. The EHR allows providers to manage patient care with the help of decision support functions, and with greater accessibility to the patient's information. One of the components of an EHR is the application of Computerized Provider Order Entry (CPOE). Although the benefits to both providers and patients have shown to be …

The Relationship Between Mentor-Mentee Gender Combinations And Mentoring Relationship Success, Kristen E. Spreck

Theses and Graduate Projects

Mentoring relationships pair a more experienced person with a lesser experienced one, to promote the personal and professional development of both participants. Understanding how the gender combinations of these relationships impact success is essential to designing strong mentoring programs for organizations in today's marketplace. Previous research on mentoring relationships presents unclear results as it relates to the impact of gender. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between gender combination and mentoring relationship success specifically related to career development for leaders. The researcher collected and analyzed data from 68 subjects using an electronic survey tool. Results of …

Development Of A Leadership Forgiveness Measure, Annelies Verdoold, Dirk Van Dierendonck Jan 2010

Development Of A Leadership Forgiveness Measure, Annelies Verdoold, Dirk Van Dierendonck

International Journal of Servant-Leadership

In a sense, organizations are communities formed out of relationships between the people working there. As such, leaders are faced with the challenge of creating a culture where people get along and stay on good terms with one another. However, mistakes and faults-sometimes even offenses-are an inevitable part of working together. It is a fact of life that relating to others inevitably exposes people to the risk of being offended or harmed by those other people (McCullough, 2001 ). People are not perfect, which can cause friction. There are different ways in which people can react to potential negative situations …

Communally Discerning A Covenant Of Hospitality For The Care Of Children At Westview Boys' Home, Ron Bruner

Doctor of Ministry Theses and Dissertations

This project addressed the lack of a covenant defining the practice of hospitality towards children for team members of Westview Boys’ Home. The purpose of the project was to facilitate the creation of such a covenant. The Westview ministry team already claimed hospitality as a strength; the hope was that reframing the ministry around this strength would improve the quality of care for children and the quality of life for the community. Invited into a communal discernment process (the methodology), the ministry team invested weeks in the examination of biblical texts, theological tradition, personal and communal narratives, cultural trends, psychological …

Lifecode: An Examination Of The Shape, The Nature, And The Usage Of The Oikoscode, A Replicative Nonformal Learning Pattern Of Ethical Education For Leadership And Community Groups, Thom Wolf Jan 2010

Lifecode: An Examination Of The Shape, The Nature, And The Usage Of The Oikoscode, A Replicative Nonformal Learning Pattern Of Ethical Education For Leadership And Community Groups, Thom Wolf

Dissertations

Problem

The problem investigated in this study is how the oikoscode (Haustafeln), a pattern of ethical education replicated by earliest Christianity, can be developed into a theoretical model. The oikoscode is the lifestyle pattern, the lifecode of attitudinal framing and behavioral conduct that guided earliest Christianity, the generation of the first 25 years after the resurrection of Jesus.

Method

For this study in theory construction, Lynham‘s five-phased (conceptual development, operationalization, application, confirmation or disconfirmation, and continuous refinement and development) theory-building recursive system was used, delimited to only two of the five phases, conceptual development and operationalization. Data regarding the shape, …
