Altruism And Altruistic Love: Intrinsic Motivation For Servant-Leadership, Peter Mulinge Jan 2018

Altruism And Altruistic Love: Intrinsic Motivation For Servant-Leadership, Peter Mulinge

International Journal of Servant-Leadership

In a world where self-interest and selfishness are often a way of life, it is a mystery to see altruistic people commit their lives to the benefit of others, while self-centered people are becoming more isolated and focused on themselves, rather than others. Seltzer (2016) explained that the self-centeredness of narcissists perpetuates their grandiosity, sense of entitlement, lack of empathy, and exploitative relationships. Self-centered narcissists perceive themselves as different from others; they lack understanding of self and value for others at a fundamental level. Understanding of self is very critical in life, it includes knowing one s agendas and the …

How far the ring-necked dove is from wringing a dove's neck. The way a stand of trees can hide a deer stand, concealing the hunter who will shoot the deer. The deer, who will fall in the fall in the fallow field.

When The World Speaks Life: Servant-Leadership As A Guiding Force Below Conscious Being1, Shann Ray Ferch

International Journal of Servant-Leadership

As I consider the beautiful writings in this year s journal, I am humbled. The poets, scholars, and scientists contained in this volume represent an investment of heart, mind, and soul in the process and practice of servant-leadership worldwide. I want to thank each writer, wholeheartedly, for their contribution, and for helping to heal the heart of the world. Because of them, I am reminded of the servantleadership that informed my life in the wilderness of Montana as a boy, and later, as a man.

Developing More Effective Women’S Leadership Development Programs & Addressing The Organizational Barriers That Inhibit Them, Greta M. Hittner Jan 2018

Developing More Effective Women’S Leadership Development Programs & Addressing The Organizational Barriers That Inhibit Them, Greta M. Hittner

Theses and Graduate Projects

After decades of work to close gender gaps at the highest levels of leadership, organizations are turning to women’s leadership development programs with greater frequency. These programs are often designed to address skill gaps common among women, but have produced limited results. This paper reviews the literature on the gender gap, women’s leadership development programs, and the requisite organizational transformations needed to address the gender gap. The implications are that change must come from both the bottom up by developing women’s leadership skills and from the top down with organizations confronting bias and structural barriers. Only then will organizations fully …

Best Practices And Challenges To Composting In A Restaurant Setting, Christopher Jon Audette Jan 2018

Best Practices And Challenges To Composting In A Restaurant Setting, Christopher Jon Audette

Theses and Graduate Projects

Composting and organic waste reduction has been an important topic in recent years. The large volume of food waste that is generated and sent to landfills is of growing concern for municipalities as they struggle to handle ever increasing waste. Though recycling efforts of glass, paper and metal materials has become more common, the addition of composting organic waste on a large scale is still relatively not established. Composting in restaurants is a growing component to reducing the amount of organic waste that ends up in landfills due to the high volume of waste that they generate. The creation of …

For The Beauty Of The Earth: Serving Others Through Being Fully Present, Jiying Song

International Journal of Servant-Leadership

Have you ever tried to describe a quiet summer afternoon in the garden? You are sitting in the shade, feeling the breeze, smelling the barbeque aroma from the neighborhood, drinking iced tea, listening to birds chirping, and watching the sunlight embracing leaves, flowers, and grass. We are made out of dust; that is how attached to the earth we are. We may be looking at a garden, but are we present to the beauty of the earth?

The Will To (Share) Power: Privilege, Positionality, And The Servant-Leader, Jennifer Tilghman-Havens Jan 2018

The Will To (Share) Power: Privilege, Positionality, And The Servant-Leader, Jennifer Tilghman-Havens

International Journal of Servant-Leadership

As an administrator at a university, I find myself reflecting on the cycles of years that mark the time our students walk the sidewalks of our campus. As one considers the last four years for our traditional graduating seniors, the formational national landscape that emerges is a critical one. As first year students, they watched protests erupt in Ferguson over the shooting of high school graduate Michael Brown (Bosman & Fitzsimmons, 2014) and immigration debates across Europe due to the Syrian refugee crisis (Robins-Early, 2015). As sophomores, they learned of the intended oil pipeline across the indigenous land of the …

Training In The Digital Age: A Practitioner's Reflections On Incorporating Traditional Classroom Strategies Into Remote Training, Mary Duggan

Capstone Collection

As internet usage increasingly dominates workplace culture, remote training has become more commonplace, particularly for wide-spread organizations looking to reduce training costs. Webinars are frequently being utilized to eliminate travel and materials costs associated with in person training. This Course-Linked Capstone in Training seeks to explore the application of training and leadership theory in remote training sessions. The central research question was: How can a trainer co-create an effective learning environment and incorporate engaged pedagogy and adult learning theory into a remote training setting? This paper analyzes the relationship between trainer and participant through an exploration of philosophies of leadership …

What Is Face Anyway?, Jiying Song Jan 2018

What Is Face Anyway?, Jiying Song

Faculty Publications - George Fox Digital

Face-saving is not a unique Chinese cultural phenomenon. The purpose of this article is to discuss what face really is from a cross-cultural perspective. The author uses Berger and Luckmann’s theory of socialization as the background and introduces what face means and what contributes to face in China. Then the author discusses the concept of face in several Western terms: impression management; politeness; collectivism; and identity. Finally, the author draws a face model at an institutional level and concludes that it is necessary to integrate cultural perspectives on face, social behavior, and identity formation.

A Multifaceted View Of Ceo Compensation And Performance: A Case Study, John Nirenberg Jan 2018

A Multifaceted View Of Ceo Compensation And Performance: A Case Study, John Nirenberg

Journal of Sustainable Social Impact

This case addresses CEO pay, a topic that annually stimulates the question of whether or not executive compensation is based on performance or something else and why it is so high in absolute terms. The societal impact of the new class of executives among the largest companies in the United States set apart from the rest of the world in a cocoon of wealth and privilege inflames resentment among workers, widens an already unfathomable distance between those at the top and the rest of us, and endangers the social amity among citizens of the polity . Positive social change might …

Journal of Sustainable Social Impact

Although the public–private partnerships in health have been adopted as the best pathway to improving health outcomes in many developing nations, implementation lacks collaborative leadership. The purpose of this empirical qualitative case study was to determine key factors that promote leadership synergy (LS) between partners that enhance ownership and accountability of community health and social initiatives in Tanzania. The diffusion of innovation theory and public–private integrated partnership module were the theoretical framework guided this study. Diffusion of innovation theory is based on the importance of effective communication to spread new ideas and foster change in behavior in a social group …

The Influence Of Transformational Middle Leaders On Work-Life Balance, Timothy D. Tanner Jan 2018

The Influence Of Transformational Middle Leaders On Work-Life Balance, Timothy D. Tanner

Theses and Dissertations--Education Sciences

Work-life balance is a key indicator of employee satisfaction, retention, and social health as well as organizational creativity and productivity. These dual benefits for employee and employer have generated interest in promoting work-life balance. Supervisors who operate from a transformational leadership framework have been linked to greater work-life balance among employees (Lamm, 2011; (Kutilek, Conklin, & Gunderson, 2002). The role of a supportive organizational culture is also central (Lewis, 2001).

In this study, Cooperative Extension Service agents (N = 1390) participated in a nationwide survey exploring the relationship between rated levels of transformational leadership among district directors, work-life balance, …

The results of the study indicated that ratings of managerial effectiveness by all four generational cohorts for all three levels of managers studied were relatively high with correlation coefficients ranging from .96 to .99. However, the only cohort association that consistently had …

Organizational Power Politics And Leadership Experiences On The View And Use Of Power In Organizations, Remi Alapo Jan 2018

Organizational Power Politics And Leadership Experiences On The View And Use Of Power In Organizations, Remi Alapo

Publications and Research

Organizational power politics permeates all actions within an organization. Power is one person’s ability to exert change on another person’s way of life and actions. Using power is a valuable means to influence and achieve intended desires and future action in others. Power is instrumental; it’s a means to achieve goals other than the attainment of power itself. Power may also be expressed as one person’s dependence on another. Power can, and sometimes is, a goal; its basic use is instrumental in the achievement of one’s goals or aims. This paper is part of a descriptive analysis section from a …

Ministerial Leadership: The Servant Leader As A Transformational Leader, Remi Alapo Jan 2018

Ministerial Leadership: The Servant Leader As A Transformational Leader, Remi Alapo

Publications and Research

This paper provides a different meaning on the role of the Pastor or Ministry Leader as a “servant leader” referencing the text—“Pastor: The Theology and Practice of Ordained Ministry” by William H. Willimon (2002),1 where the author describes the ordained ministry as “a is a gift of God to the church” which usually does not mean that it is an easy task but rather, more complex and challenging as ministry leaders or pastors feel a call to transforming societies beyond their calling. In post-modern society, the pastors’ role has differed and extended to form in line with creating a just …

Marketing Leadership In A Knowledge Economy, Myles Bassell, Sonia Lambert Jan 2018

Marketing Leadership In A Knowledge Economy, Myles Bassell, Sonia Lambert

Atlantic Marketing Journal

Often the most valuable assets of a marketing driven firm are intangible assets such as a brand name, intellectual capital, and the expertise and knowledge of employees. The new breed of marketing leaders understand that it is important for employees to collaborate and be engaged and that leaders must be agents of change, creative, ethical, and global thinkers who can create learning organizations. The research reveals that organizations that are going to thrive in the knowledge economy are those that have marketing leaders who can build learning organizations, encourage diversity, and ensure employees are engaged in meaningful work.

Neutrosophic Multi-Criteria Decision Making, Florentin Smarandache, Jun Ye, Yanhui Guo Jan 2018

Neutrosophic Multi-Criteria Decision Making, Florentin Smarandache, Jun Ye, Yanhui Guo

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

The notion of a neutrosophic quadruple BCK/BCI-number is considered in the first article (“Neutrosophic Quadruple BCK/BCI-Algebras”, by Young Bae Jun, Seok-Zun Song, Florentin Smarandache, and Hashem Bordbar), and a neutrosophic quadruple BCK/BCI-algebra, which consists of neutrosophic quadruple BCK/BCI-numbers, is constructed. Several properties are investigated, and a (positive implicative) ideal in a neutrosophic quadruple BCK-algebra and a closed ideal in a neutrosophic quadruple BCI-algebra are studied. Given subsets A and B of a BCK/BCI-algebra, the set NQ(A,B), which consists of neutrosophic quadruple BCK/BCInumbers with a condition, is established. Conditions for the set NQ(A,B) to be a (positive implicative) ideal of a …

Background

The Central Appalachian region of the United States is in the midst of a hepatitis C virus epi- demic driven by injection of opioids, particularly heroin, with contaminated syringes. In response to this epidemic, several needle exchange programs (NEP) have opened to pro- vide clean needles and other supplies and services to people who inject drugs (PWID). How- ever, no studies have investigated the barriers and facilitators to implementing, operating, and expanding NEPs in less populous areas of the United States.

Methods

Theses and Dissertations--Community & Leadership Development

Medium to Long Term Impacts on Former Participants of the Shoulder to Shoulder Global Brigades to Ecuador. International service learning and voluntourism programs in global health evoke benefits for both community and the intervener. While it is clear that the Shoulder to Shoulder Global program at the University of Kentucky provides a service to an economically resource poor community in Santo Domingo, Ecuador, what is unclear is the impact these interprofessional experiences have on the participants that travel with the four times a year health brigades. This study proposes to answer the question of what are the educational, personal and …
