A common observation in higher education is that most deaf undergraduate students majoring in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) do not continue on to STEM careers. A smaller pool of deaf individuals persists in STEM and succeed in becoming scientists. Various reasons may explain this observation, one of which may involve personality traits. Certain personality traits have been found in scientists in the general population that differ from the general population: scientists have greater extraversion, conscientiousness, and openness on the Big Five Inventory (BFI) However, no study has focused on personality traits in deaf scientists. The purpose of this study is to highlight the factors that influence police legitimacy in students’ eyes. This study tests process-based model (view of police based on citizens’ experiences or sharing of experiences) hypotheses using data from 98 deaf/HH students from Gallaudet University, who successfully completed an online questionnaire. This study aims at describing correlations and regressions between police legitimacy and the identified significant factors (Perceived Police’s Compliance with the Law, Procedural Justice, Police Effectiveness, Moral Credibility, and Cooperation with the Police) which may determine legitimacy of the police. Intersectional Experiences: White And Black Deaf Lesbians In Metro Dc 1980 - 2000, Paige E. Watson

This study looks at the experiences of two groups with intersecting identities: white and Black Deaf lesbians who lived in Washington, DC from the 1980s to the early 2000s, a transformative period for lesbians. During the 1980s, the larger LGBT community united as one to push for recognition. The 1990s brought the lesbian feminist movement, and with it attention towards classism and sexism within the LGBT movement. During this period, the focus of the lesbian community shifted from a white and middle-class movement to a more inclusive one. Disability In Medical Spaces, Emily Johnson

Honors Capstone Projects

While there are many existing definitions of disability, the academic discipline of disability studies uses an interdisciplinary perspective to define and understand the disability experience. The idea that disability is a disease that ought to be cured, or the medical model of disability, is one of the most pervasive views of disability today. This treatment-centered viewpoint has greatly influenced the way people with disabilities receive medical care. With this project, I investigate how future physicians are taught about disability. I hypothesize that by incorporating disability studies into the medical school curriculum, as well as medical practice, there would be a …
