Effects Of Reading Strategies And The Writing Process With Written Recasts On Second Language Achievement, Helen Ramirez, Don Jones

Administrative Issues Journal

This study examined the effectiveness of teaching methods used with a second language reading and writing unit. This investigation addressed discrepancies between assessment scores in the four communicative language skill areas of students in beginning-level Spanish classes at a suburban middle school. Accordingly, the purpose of this study was to explore how literacy-based practices that included teaching strategies used with reading, teaching use of the writing process with a writing assignment, and teacher employment of written recasts affect second language achievement. The theoretical base of the study consisted of second language theories and hypotheses that explained how second language learning …

The Effectiveness Of Targeted Political Advertisements, Vincent P. Malainy Apr 2013

The Effectiveness Of Targeted Political Advertisements, Vincent P. Malainy

Senior Honors Theses and Projects - Political Science

Political campaigns are increasingly turning to Internet advertisements to reach potential voters. These advertisements are designed to target a person's specific policy preferences. A series of three surveys were administered to students at EMU. The purpose was to determine the effects of targeted Internet-style advertisements on a person's perception of a candidate, their motivation to vote, and their knowledge of the candidate's platform. The results show that targeted advertisements tend to be more effective than non-targeted advertisements in improving a voter's perception of a candidate and increasing their motivation to vote. The results also shed light on the inferences that …

Adaptive Memory: Evaluating Alternative Forms Of Fitness-Relevant Processing In The Survival Processing Paradigm, Joshua Sandry, David Trafimow, Michael J. Marks, Stephen Rice Apr 2013

Adaptive Memory: Evaluating Alternative Forms Of Fitness-Relevant Processing In The Survival Processing Paradigm, Joshua Sandry, David Trafimow, Michael J. Marks, Stephen Rice

Department of Psychology Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

Memory may have evolved to preserve information processed in terms of its fitness-relevance. Based on the assumption that the human mind comprises different fitness-relevant adaptive mechanisms contributing to survival and reproductive success, we compared alternative fitness-relevant processing scenarios with survival processing. Participants rated words for relevancy to fitness-relevant and control conditions followed by a delay and surprise recall test (Experiment 1a). Participants recalled more words processed for their relevance to a survival situation. We replicated these findings in an online study (Experiment 2) and a study using revised fitness-relevant scenarios (Experiment 3). Across all experiments, we did not find a …

Predictors Of Preschool Children's Peer Interactions: Temperament And Prosocial Behavior, Ibrahim H. Acar

College of Education and Human Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

The current study was a correlational study that examined children’s temperament (inhibitory control and shyness) and prosocial behavior as predictors of preschool-aged children’s peer interactions. The current study also examined the moderating effects of inhibitory control and shyness on relation between children’s prosocial behavior and peer interactions. Participants were 40 children (19 boys) aged from three to five enrolled in eight different preschools in a Midwestern city. It was hypothesized that children’s prosocial behavior and temperament (inhibitory control and shyness) would be correlated with preschool children’s peer interactions, operationalized as sociability, communication, assertiveness, conflict, and a composite peer interactions domain. …

Categorical Funding In Arkansas, Reed Greenwood, Gary W. Ritter

Policy Briefs

As a result of the Arkansas Supreme Court’s Lake View v. Huckabee Decision, the Public School Funding Act of 2003 established Arkansas’ current funding system. A part of the current system allocates additional funding for districts based on need (categorical funding). In doing so, the state recognizes that it is necessary to distribute additional funding based on educational need to meet adequacy and equity standards. The system allocates funding for groups of students who face particular challenges: Alternative Learning Environment students (ALE), English-language Learners (ELL), and students in poverty (National School Lunch Act). In the current legislative session, lawmakers are …

The Impact Of Cumulative Risk On Parenting Behaviors As Mediated By Parental Distress, Courtney E. Green Apr 2013

The Impact Of Cumulative Risk On Parenting Behaviors As Mediated By Parental Distress, Courtney E. Green

Senior Honors Theses

Cumulative risk is a salient construct addressed in family dynamics research. There have been multiple relationships established among cumulative risk, parenting, and child outcomes through previous research. The current study furthered this body of research by addressing the role of parenting distress within models predicting parenting behaviors within a context of risk. Cumulative risk, parenting, child behavior, and transactional relationships highlighted the relationships between an environment of risk and resulting parenting outcomes. It was predicted that parental distress will act as a mediator variable between the baseline cumulative risk and later parenting behaviors. This hypothesis was tested using data from …

SURGE

If there is one thing that I will be absolutely ashamed in admitting to you, it’s that I love television. Love it. Not in a turn-it-on-watch-whatever-all-TV-rocks kind of way, but in an I’m-overly-obsessed-with-15-shows-at-a-time kind of way, to the point where I could say that being able to watch the latest episode of Suits or Community could easily be the highlight of my day (week, year…). The Impact Of Symbolic Speech In Public Schools: A Selective Case Analysis From Tinker To Zamecnik, Charles R. Waggoner Apr 2013

The Impact Of Symbolic Speech In Public Schools: A Selective Case Analysis From Tinker To Zamecnik, Charles R. Waggoner

Administrative Issues Journal

The freedom to express the self and the right to a free public education sets the American public school experience apart from those of many other nations. The combination of the two often creates tensions and confrontations that become contentious leading to litigation. For the past fifty years the courts have attempted to balance the symbolic rights of students with the obligation of the school to protect students from bullying, while maintaining decorum that allows all students to pursue an education free from intimidation. Young people express themselves in many ways, often in a symbolic manner that involves the wearing …

Discovery On A Budget: Improved Searching Without A Web-Scale Discovery Product, Chris Bulock, Lynnette Fields

SIUE Faculty Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity

Discovery is a key component of a library's services, and user expectation are high. Even if a Web-scale discovery system is not in the cards, there is plenty a library can do to improve discovery for their users. Librarians at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville have conducted a series of user studies focused on discovery tasks using the library's website and catalog. The lessons learned fro these studies have led to an ongoing redesign of the library's web-site as well as recommendations for instruction. This paper shares successful strategies for evaluating and improving discovery, no expensive software or programming skills necessary.

Mining For Gold: Identifying The Librarian's Toolkit For Managing Hybrid Oa, Jill Emery

Library Faculty and Staff Publications and Presentations

This plenary presentation was given on April 8 at UKSG Conference 2013 and discusses the following points: (1.) Open access provision does not mean that access is provided with absolutely no cost associated with it. Management of open access publishing is an investment that libraries are making (2.) Open access publishing whether it is done in your library or outside of it still needs to be organized and managed. (3.) Open access within your institution is an enterprise-wide endeavor and this is especially true within the library itself. Whatever you do, do not create another silo of management. The video …

Applying The Multiple Constituents’ Model And Social Justice Variables To Determine The Constituents’ Perception Of The Virginia Putative Father Registry, Tracey Jackson

Theses and Dissertations

A putative father registry represents a legal option for unmarried males who wish to secure legal notice regarding an adoption proceeding for a child they may have fathered. Putative father registries must balance the interests of the putative father against those of the child, the birth mother, and the adoptive parents. This study utilized a framework adapted from the Multiple Constituency Model and used social justice, as indicated by distributive justice and procedural justice, to determine the perceptions among primary constituency groups of the Virginia Putative Father Registry. This research utilized a mixed-methods approach to analyze qualitative data from focus …

A Qualitative Analysis Of Latina Adolescents' And Their Mothers' Perspectives On Adolescent Dating Violence, Carla Shaffer Apr 2013

A Qualitative Analysis Of Latina Adolescents' And Their Mothers' Perspectives On Adolescent Dating Violence, Carla Shaffer

Theses and Dissertations

Adolescent dating violence is a prevalent and disconcerting reality for many adolescents. Communication with others (e.g., parents, older siblings, friends) about dating violence may buffer some negative outcomes associated with experiencing dating violence. Although researchers are attending more to this public health problem, what we know about the messages that adolescents receive about dating violence is limited, especially for Latina teens. To address this gap in the literature, 18 Latina adolescents (14-17 years) and their mothers participated in semi-structured interviews to explore their beliefs about what dating violence means to them, messages that are shared about dating violence with mothers …
