Seeing Candidates Through A Gendered Lens: How Differential Media Coverage Serves As A Barrier To Women's Political Participation, Shelby Bremer '10

Honor Scholar Theses

1992 was a banner year for women in politics, even earning the moniker “Year of the Woman,” thanks to the election of four women to the United States Senate at one time, an unprecedented feat in the realm of female political representation (‘Year of the Woman’). Twenty years later, in November 2012, that record was shattered, when more women ran for, and were elected to Congress than ever before. “Not since the so‐called Year of the Woman in 1992 have we seen such a leap in the number of women stepping forward to contend for Congressional seats, “ said Debbie …

A Climate For Swelling: The Social & Biological Impacts Of Lymphatic Filariasis On Males & Females In Developing Countries, Arezoo Nazari '13 Apr 2013

A Climate For Swelling: The Social & Biological Impacts Of Lymphatic Filariasis On Males & Females In Developing Countries, Arezoo Nazari '13

Honor Scholar Theses

Neglected tropical diseases (NTD) impair physical and cognitive development. This impairment makes it difficult to earn a living, restricts quality of life, and limits productivity in the work force. As a result, neglected tropical diseases trap the poor in a cycle of disease and poverty. Lymphatic filariasis (LF), also known as elephantiasis, is an NTD. It starts when microscopic, thread-like parasitic worms (Wuchereria bancrofti, Brugia timori, and Brugia malayi) are transmitted by mosquitoes. These worms infect and block the lymph nodes in the body, causing edema. Blockage in the lymphatic system and build-up of tissue and blood flow often occur …

Humanity is faced with an impending urban crisis, as the urban population is expected to move far beyond the rural in coming decades. With unprecedented rates of urbanization and sprawl, we find proliferations of informal communities such as slums and shantytowns. UNHCR estimates a population of 3 billion slum dwellers – a third of humanity – by 2050 (UNHCR). Much of this sprawl will take place in the Global South in mid-sized urban spaces, rather than present-day megalopolises. It is important for academia to engage with processes of urbanization, understanding how systems of power, culture, and production shape urban landscapes …

Never A Yellow Bird, Always A Blue Bird: Ethnodrama Of A Latina Learner’S Educational Experiences In 1950 - 60s South Texas, Norman Gillen, Kakali Bhattacharya Apr 2013

Never A Yellow Bird, Always A Blue Bird: Ethnodrama Of A Latina Learner’S Educational Experiences In 1950 - 60s South Texas, Norman Gillen, Kakali Bhattacharya

The Qualitative Report

This article is a response to calls for more first - person accounts from researchers using narrative formats to interpret data. The authors examine the practice of ethnodrama as a means of exploring and analyzing the experiences of a Latina public - school student in a small South Texas coastal town during the 1950s and 1960s as she attempted to negotiate multiple ethnic spaces while resisting traditional behavioral expectations representative of that period. Through coding and synthesizing the participant’s responses, the researchers established theme s on which to base the composition of three dramatic scenes for purposes of data representation. …

Baby Steps: A Book Review Of Dorothy Valcarcel Craig’S Action Research Essentials, Mahdi Qasqas

The Qualitative Report

Action Research Essentials by Dorothy Valcarcel Craig (2009) is an excellent resource for the emerging researcher; especially doctoral students in their first year of studies. Craig is successful in providing the reader with the essentials of action research while also addressing common challenges; one baby step at a time. In this review I will first explain the process of selecting and conducting the first reading of the book followed by identifying the author’s objectives and intent. Then, I present a brief description of each chapter and note how their content relates to struggling research students' common challenges of the . …

Interrupting Life History: The Evolution Of Relationship Within Research, Ronald E. Hackett Apr 2013

Interrupting Life History: The Evolution Of Relationship Within Research, Ronald E. Hackett

The Qualitative Report

In this paper the author explores how relationships are defined within the context of constructing a life history. The life history of Benjamin, a homeless young man transitioning to adulthood, is used to illustrate how difficult it is to define the parameters of the research environment. During an “ethically important moment” in the research process, the author had to critically analyze his obligation to his participant based upon the relational titles exchanged. As chaos in Benjamin’s life increased, a choice needed to be made about the researcher’s involvement in his life. Should the researcher provide support or simply document events? …

On Sen On Comparative Justice, Chandran Kukathas Apr 2013

On Sen On Comparative Justice, Chandran Kukathas

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

Against scepticism from thinkers including John Rawls and Thomas Nagel about the appropriateness of justice as the concept through which global ethical concerns should be approached, Amartya Sen argues that the problem lies not with the idea of justice, but with a particular approach to thinking of justice, namely a transcendental approach. In its stead Sen is determined to offer an alternative systematic theory of justice, namely a comparative approach, as a more promising foundation for a theory of ‘global justice.’ But in the end Sen offers no such thing. He does not develop a theory of justice and this …

The Effect Of Foreign Direct Investment On Economic Growth And Its Implications, Mark Tolley '13 Apr 2013

The Effect Of Foreign Direct Investment On Economic Growth And Its Implications, Mark Tolley '13

Honor Scholar Theses

My thesis paper examines whether or not foreign direct investment promotes economic growth in the host country. Looking into a prior study, by Li and Liu (2005), they found that FDI does spur growth; however, there has been contrasting studies that show that FDI has a negative effect on host country’s growth. I argue that, after researching conflicting arguments, foreign direct investment is correlated to positive economic growth. My econometric model takes a panel data set from 82 different countries from 1970-2011. The growth model concludes that FDI does promote positive economic growth. This is significant because it confirms my …

Small Rural School District Consolidation In Texas: An Analysis Of Its Impact On Cost And Student Achievement, Dwight A. Cooley, Koy A. Floyd Apr 2013

Small Rural School District Consolidation In Texas: An Analysis Of Its Impact On Cost And Student Achievement, Dwight A. Cooley, Koy A. Floyd

Administrative Issues Journal

Historically, the number of public school districts in the United States has decreased despite a dramatic increase in the number of students enrolled. Although public school district consolidation has impacted districts of all sizes, since the late 1930’s smaller rural districts facing dwindling community resources have merged or consolidated with each other, resulting in fewer school districts. When school districts consolidate, all aspects of the newly-formed district are affected. Each year, lawmakers and rural public school district officials face dwindling finances, and each year these decision makers question whether to consolidate to avoid fiscal perils. Proponents tout the benefits of …

Testing Integrated Primary Care And Public Health Models For Prevention Delivery, Glen P. Mays

Health Management and Policy Presentations

Improving the delivery of evidence-tested prevention interventions to populations at greatest risk requires strong coordination between primary care providers and public health organizations. This presentation reviews current research on models for integrated delivery of primary care and public health services, and identifies emerging research needs and opportunities. Of particular interest are the roles that practice-based research networks (PBRNs) can play in building this evidence.

Developing A New Graduate Program In Healthcare Management: Embracing The Transformation Of Healthcare Management Education On A Pathway To Success, Daniel G. Dominguez, Chris Garcia, Kevin G. Lafrance Apr 2013

Developing A New Graduate Program In Healthcare Management: Embracing The Transformation Of Healthcare Management Education On A Pathway To Success, Daniel G. Dominguez, Chris Garcia, Kevin G. Lafrance

Administrative Issues Journal

Within a sea change in the structure and process of providing health services, the field of health administration education has moved decisively and concretely from a teaching-centered model of education based on the assumption that knowledge equals competency to a learning-centered model. The learning-centered, or studentcentered, model is based on the assumption that competency is related to the ability to demonstrate mission- and market-relevant knowledge, skills, values, and attitudes. This article provides a comprehensive, non-prescriptive approach to the development of a new competency-based graduate program in health administration within an urban-based, private university located in the Southwest United States. The …

Heterodox Economics: The Alternative To Neoliberal Market-Fundametalist Economics, Tae-Hee Jo Apr 2013

Heterodox Economics: The Alternative To Neoliberal Market-Fundametalist Economics, Tae-Hee Jo

Neoliberalism Seminar

Mainstream-neoclassical economics is the theoretical foundation of neoliberal economic policy that promotes competition and commodification through markets. Increasing fragility of an economy, increasing income inequality, the scaled-back welfare system, and recurring financial crisis are prominent consequences of neoliberal restructuring of industries and the economy as a whole. Is the “law of supply and demand” the universal principle that governs all the economic activities under capitalism? Is there an alternative way of explaining and organizing the provisioning process of a capitalist economy? How can economics deal with such socio-economic problems beyond market-fundamentalist economic narratives? In my presentation, I will highlight heterodox …

Environmental Conflicts In The Neoliberal Era, Charalampos Kostantinidis Apr 2013

Environmental Conflicts In The Neoliberal Era, Charalampos Kostantinidis

Neoliberalism Seminar

Neoliberalism is characterized as a 35-year long period of attack of capital against labor in an attempt to restore falling profit rates. This has come at the expense of increased inequality and uncertainty, leading to a crisis of legitimacy for the neoliberal model of capitalism. Environmental issues offer both an opportunity for accumulation and profits, by extending the reach of the market into areas that were not previously incorporated into the circuits of capital, as well as a chance to restore some of the waning legitimacy of the neoliberal model, to the extent that environmental problems occupy a central position …

Using An Equity/Performance Matrix To Address Salary Compression/Inversion And Performance Pay Issues, Peter Richardson, Steven Thomas Apr 2013

Using An Equity/Performance Matrix To Address Salary Compression/Inversion And Performance Pay Issues, Peter Richardson, Steven Thomas

Administrative Issues Journal

Pay compression and inversion are significant problems for many organizations and are often severe in schools of business in particular. At the same time, there is more insistence on showing accountability and paying employees based on performance. The authors explain and show a detailed example of how to use a Compensation Equity/ Performance Matrix (CEPM) approach to rationally and fairly address both of these issues simultaneously. The context is discussed along with the use and limitations of this approach. The CEPM approach can be used by any type of organization facing these problems.
