Teaching Public Choice Economics In A Public Finance Course

Journal of Economics and Finance Education

Public choice economics is often considered a sub or a separate field from public finance. Traditional public finance courses focus on public goods, externalities, and the solutions to these issues with an emphasis on expenditure and tax policy, addressing different types of taxation at different levels of government. This paper provides a means of integrating public choice theory into a public finance course to highlight the differences in these fields, but also the complementarity. While traditional textbooks touch on political decision-making and themes of public choice, I will explain how an instructor could incorporate these themes throughout the course.

Teaching Public Choice At The Master's Level

This article summarizes the pedagogical approaches I have taken in teaching public choice in a course that enrolls advanced business school undergraduates (majors in economics, mainly) as well as master's students in economics and political science. It starts with a brief overview of the field and then describes the course's content. I reproduce a recent syllabus and two representative homework assignments. Some learning "modules" are suggested and ways of evaluating students' mastery of public choice principles are discussed.

Using Film Clips To Teach Public Choice Economics: Take Two

Recent years have seen a trend away from "chalk and talk" toward alternative pedagogical approaches to teaching economics. Media clips, in particular, have been touted as a way to provide students with memorable and exciting exposure to economic concepts. Media clips are especially well-suited for teaching public choice economics because of the plethora of films and television shows depicting government activity. This paper documents how clips from popular movies and series such as "Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs" and "House of Cards" can be used to teach public choice economics.

The present study examined the relationship between Dark Triad personality traits and moral judgments in a sample of 68 undergraduate students recruited from psychology courses at a southeastern university. All participants volunteered through an online system and received course research credit for participation. Participants completed the Short Dark Triad Measure to assess levels of psychopathy, Machiavellianism, and narcissism, as well as the Revised Morally Debatable Behaviors Scale (MDBS-R), in a controlled laboratory setting. Individuals with strong psychopathic traits were predicted to report greater endorsement of morally debatable behaviors. This paper is dependent entirely on primary sources in the Roland D. Sawyer Collection, available in the University of New Hampshire's Milne Special Collections. Studying Sawyer's autobiography and various socialist writings illustrates his idea of a good life for the American working-class and how they were to achieve it through the adoption of a socialist doctrine. Because the American Psychological Association (APA) Ethics Code states that psychologists cannot participate in activities that violate human rights, an ethical debate has emerged regarding whether they should participate in capital cases. The purpose of this qualitative study was to investigate how the sex offender registry contributes to the mental distress of registered sex offenders and their concerns about recidivism. This study addressed a gap in understanding the sex offender registry experiences from the offender’s perspective. The research question addressed how adult male registrants describe their experiences of mental distress associated with registration and how they perceive registration as shaping their risk of reoffending. Impact Of Burnout And Empathy On Correctional Officers’ Aggression, Sagan Ladd

Correctional officers experience persistent occupational stress that places them at elevated risk for burnout, which may negatively affect emotional functioning and increase aggression. Guided by general strain theory, this quantitative nonexperimental correlational study examined the relationships between burnout, empathy, and aggression among uniformed correctional officers working in U.S. jails and prisons. Participants (N = 58) completed the Maslach Burnout Inventory, the Interpersonal Reactivity Index, and the Buss–Perry Aggression Questionnaire–Short Form through an anonymous online survey. Simple and multiple linear regression analyses were conducted to answer three research questions. Results indicated that burnout significantly predicted aggression, F(1, 56) = 12.38, p < .001, R² = .18, such that higher burnout was associated with higher aggression scores. Empathy did not significantly predict aggression, F(1, 56) = 2.32, p = .133, R² = .04, though the relationship trended negatively. A multiple regression analysis revealed that burnout and empathy together significantly predicted aggression, F(2, 55) = 7.74, p = .001, R² = .19; however, burnout remained the only significant predictor when controlling for empathy. Additional analyses indicated that burnout significantly predicted all four facets of aggression: verbal aggression, physical aggression, anger, and hostility. These findings suggest that burnout plays a central role in aggression among correctional officers and highlight the importance of organizational and mental health interventions aimed at reducing burnout to promote staff well-being and institutional safety.

While drug overdose deaths have generally decreased in the past year, close to 60,000 overdoses involving opioids occurred in 2024. The opioid crisis has lasted over two decades and is now in the fourth wave. The fourth wave has been characterized by overdoses resulting from fentanyl adulteration in the drug supply and polysubstance overdoses involving fentanyl. Our original note addressed a common misconception that to earn the yield-to-maturity (YTM) on a coupon bond an investor must reinvest the coupon payments. Shirvani and Wilbratte (2009) take issue with our presentation and results. We will demonstrate that their arguments entirety rest on the proposition that the YTM must equal the realized compounded yield (RCY). This is a construct that explicitly assumes coupon reinvestment. The Relationship Between The Promised And Realized Yields To Maturity Revisited

This paper reaffirms the long-held view that the promised yield to maturity of a coupon bond can be realized only under certain restrictive conditions. Specifically, the realized yield equals the promised yield only if the spot rate and yield curves are flat and remain unchanged throughout the term of the bond, a condition which rarely if ever holds. In addition, we explain that, regardless of the reinvestment rates, the promised yield on a coupon bond will be realized, provided that the bond is held not to its maturity but to its duration.

Expected utility theory, Pratt and Arrow’s risk premium, and the Markowitz risk premium are based upon Von Neumann and Morgenstern’s five axioms of cardinal utility. The derivation of these measures from these axioms is generally considered too mathematically sophisticated for the undergraduate curriculum. This leaves a wide gap in the foundation of financial theory for the undergraduate. An alternative simplified presentation of expected utility that is suitable for the undergraduate curriculum, and that avoids the nuances and complexities of the traditional mathematically more complete derivation, is presented here. Time Spent Online And Student Performance In Online Business Courses: A Multinomial Logit Analysis

This study examines the determinants of academic achievement in online business courses. As a measure of effort, we use the total amount of time each student spent in the course. We estimate a multinomial logistic model to examine the odds of attaining one grade versus another depending on time spent online, GPA, and some demographic characteristics of students. Our findings suggest that extra effort can help a student move from letter grades F, D and C to grade B, but is less helpful for the move from B to A. For the latter improvement, a high GPA matters the most.

The present study investigated differences in MMPI-2-RF scale scores between individuals with and without a history of mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI). The goal was to identify distinct psychosocial functioning patterns in individuals with mTBI. Archival outpatient sample of 147 adults aged 18 to 70 (M = 43.28, SD = 11.13) was utilized, comprising 65 participants with mTBI and 82 without TBI. Significant differences were observed across multiple MMPI-2-RF scales. The group with mTBI history exhibited higher levels of symptom overreporting, symptom validity concerns, emotional and internalizing dysfunction, somatic and cognitive complaints, and negative emotionality, as compared to the …

This study examines how artificial intelligence integration, transformational leadership, and sustainability practices collectively influence organizational resilience and performance in crisis-affected Arab economies, with a focus on Lebanese organizations navigating compound disruptions. Using a convergent mixed-methods design, quantitative data were collected from 487 managers and employees across Lebanese organizations and comparative international samples in the education, finance, NGO, and tourism sectors, complemented by 32 semi-structured interviews. Results demonstrate that AI integration, transformational leadership, and sustainability practices significantly enhance organizational resilience and performance, with emotional intelligence and affective commitment serving as critical mediators.
