On the eve of the release of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual 5, with major revisions planned in its diagnostic approach to personality disorder (PD), qualitative research was conducted via face-to-face interviews to explore the perspective of seasoned mental health clinicians regarding their experience working with personality disordered individuals, and how that experience squared with current debates within personality science and positive psychology. Eight experienced clinicians were asked how they saw PD in regard to character strength, what relationship they imagined existed between the two, and whether they saw them as existing on the same dimensional axis. Suicide among older adults is an increasing mental health concern in the United States, and yet depression and other signs of suicide often go unnoticed. The film and discussion guide "Talking with Dolores" was funded by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health to increase awareness of warnings of depression and suicide in the elderly and demonstrate ways of conversing with them about suicide. The objective of this descriptive study was to identify and describe those motivations for individuals who chose to enter into the military. Motivations are important to understand as they provide insight into the values and needs of individuals. These values and needs impact an individual's Person-In-Environment fit. The study utilized an online survey to which 76 veterans or service members responded. The online survey collected demographic data such as age, gender, race and branch of service. This project was undertaken to capture the responses of administrators and teachers in a public high school setting in regard to their perceptions of interpersonal relationships with students as a result of participation in Challenge Day, an experiential youth program that targets the cause of social oppression on school campuses. Recent research on internet addiction disorder (IAD) has revealed that technology may be affecting people on a social, familial, and neurophysiological basis. This study was a qualitative study that asked clinicians from any discipline to describe how they use storytelling in their clinical practices. Two primary research questions were addressed; the first being to ascertain whether or not clinicians are using storytelling and the second question was to learn how they are using this technique in practice. 13 subjects responded to an on-line electronic survey that was distributed using a snowball method of sampling. This study explores the construct of cultural competence through clients' perceptions of treatment issues encountered when working with clinicians of a differing racial background. Utilizing interviews with twelve clients of color who had worked psychotherapeutically within cross-racial dyads, this exploratory study examines clients' experiences of treatment issues in this treatment context, clients' understanding of cultural competence in psychotherapy, and their suggestions for cultivating it in clinical practice. My thesis will use case material from a patient with an emerging diagnosis of a major mental illness (Bipolar Disorder) to examine the intersection of mood, character, medical comorbidity, substance abuse, to better understand how these factors contribute to the diagnosis and treatment of a patient with a complicated, but in no way unique presentation, of this complicated and unique disorder. The purpose of this exploratory study was to investigate how clinicians engage parents in their child's therapy. The study attempts to learn from a clinicians' perspective about their parent work. Participants were asked to discuss their experiences, thoughts, and feelings about parent work especially about engaging parents in the treatment of their child. The sample included twelve clinicians who had at least two years of experience working with children, adolescents, their parents and/or families. This study was undertaken to explore the role of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community in the lives of lesbians over 65. Lesbians over 65 have lived through a period in U.S. history when homosexuality was not socially acceptable or safe; LGBT individuals lived with a real and constant threat of loss of employment and family, and of violence, without protection of law that is afforded today. The current study explored how clinical social workers working with patients who are prescribed psychotropic medication went about developing the knowledge and skills to work with the population. The study identified training activities that contribute to the development of practice skills, and examined the relationship between these activities and self-rated practice competency levels. A snowball sample of 28 clinical social workers whose scope of practice included collaborating on the care of patients who are prescribed psychotropic medications were recruited. This qualitative study explored the experiences of how Gestalt therapists understand and apply principles of "authentic connectedness" when interacting across difference, such as race, culture, class, gender or sexuality, in both their clinical work and experiences in daily life. The researcher was especially interested in how these principles are used to understand and address interactions around privilege and oppression, which are dynamics that come up on a daily basis in American society, both within and beyond the therapy relationship. The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore the experiences of stigma on foster care alumni. Participants were asked about their experiences in foster care related to stigma and how this may have affected their relationships and personal development. They were also prompted to share any other information the researcher may have missed. Six men were interviewed for this study between the ages of 19 and 37. The interviews provided rich information about how they interpreted the stigma and what short and long-term effects were results of this stigma. African American women are more likely than those in any other ethnic group to die from heart disease, cancer, and stroke and are less likely to seek treatment. The rate of maternal incarceration has significantly increased throughout the past forty years. A rising number of children under the age of eighteen experience having their mother incarcerated. Evidence suggests maternal incarceration creates significant disruptions within family structures and has implications for the attachments children will form. Evidence suggests children whose mother is incarcerated primarily display insecure attachments. Researchers posit that family systems endure significant changes and emotional relationships are greatly altered.

This empirical research study explored the impact of the therapist's pregnancy on the therapist-client relationship. Specifically, this study asked whether therapists and clients interact in less professional, more personal ways during the therapist's pregnancy, and how this is perceived by therapists to impact treatment. Relational psychodynamic theory was the theoretical underpinning of this study. Thirteen psychotherapists were interviewed about their experiences of practicing therapy while pregnant. All participants were either currently or recently pregnant. This empirical study surveyed seventy-six female professors who hold tenure-track positions at eleven eastern Pennsylvania colleges and universities. The participants ranged in age from 20's to 60's and varied in race. While there is literature regarding women's relationship satisfaction and job satisfaction, there is a lack of literature about the personal lives of this specific population in relation to their career demands. This study focuses on the effectiveness of psychodrama as a treatment for adolescents who have experienced trauma. This study looked extensively at adolescent trauma and three treatment frameworks designed to treat it, The Neurosequential Model of Therapeutics, Attachment Self Regulation and Competency, and Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. This study also looked at psychodrama and psychodrama frameworks that are intended for use with trauma survivors. Psychodrama is an action- based treatment framework, where clients engage in therapeutic enactments. This exploratory study was undertaken to determine the extent to which LGBT social workers experience homophobia and transphobia during the course of their Master's education. Secondly, this study examined the cumulative impact that homophobia and transphobia have on the professional development of LGBT social workers during their graduate education. Using semi-structured interviews with LGBT Master's level social work students, as well as graduates of Master's of Social Work programs, the study found that all 12 participants experienced oppression in the form of homophobia and/or transphobia at some point during their education. This qualitative study explores the perspectives of Asian therapists on how issues of race and ethnicity impact their clinical work with Asian clients and other clients of color. Ten Asian therapists from varying educational and professional backgrounds were interviewed about how the elements of racial similarity, racial difference, ethnic similarity, and ethnic difference may have influence on the relationships between them and their clients. Findings from this study confirmed previous studies regarding the positive impacts of racial and ethnic match on the therapeutic relationship between Asian therapists and Asian clients. This qualitative study explored the ways clinicians navigate the therapeutic alliance, treatment approach, and have treatment success with juvenile offenders diagnosed with conduct disorder. Twelve Master's level or higher mental health clinicians were selected through purposive convenience snowball sampling. They were interviewed in person about their use of treatment modalities, techniques and strategies for developing a positive therapeutic alliance and how they have treatment success with these clients. Over the past few decades there have been contradictory research findings regarding the effects of pornography on attitudes and violence toward women. Researchers have recently found that the more realistic one perceives pornography to be, the more likely one is perceived positive benefits of pornography. As a result, in the current study, researchers explored how one's perceived realism and frequency of viewing impacted attitudes about sexual consent. The secondary purpose was to investigate how locus of control may moderate those correlations. This qualitative exploratory study examines the Korean cultural narrative of depression from Korean American clinician's perspectives. There were eight participants that were licensed in one of the following professions; marriage and family therapist, licensed clinical social worker, psychologist and psychiatrist. The purpose of this study was to explore the experience of disclosure in the workplace among social workers with mental health issues with a particular focus on the catalysts of coming out, whether stigma inhibits disclosure, and the perceived social and emotional benefits and costs of coming out. The study sought to understand not only how participants have been affected by conducting therapy with survivors of sexual violence, but also how they and their colleagues are able to maintain their well-being. This project is a theoretical investigation of indecision as it has been conceptualized from a number of perspectives, including within the literature of vocational counseling, the fields of cognitive and neuropsychology, and in emerging research from social psychologists and behavioral economists. Two theory chapters utilize concepts from existential theory and Winnicott's true and selves to explore the phenomenon more deeply. A discussion chapter critiques these theories and offers suggestions for further research, as well as implementation suggestions for the clinician based on the research and theories presented.
