Caver Quest 3d Virtual Cave Simulation Of Snowy River In Fort Stanton Cave, Ronald J. Lipinski, Pete Lindsley Nov 2013

Caver Quest 3d Virtual Cave Simulation Of Snowy River In Fort Stanton Cave, Ronald J. Lipinski, Pete Lindsley

National Cave and Karst Management Symposium 2013

Virtual worlds, or 3D simulations through which an avatar can travel, is becoming a common means to display products or provide training in new environments. This paper describes the steps in producing the 3D virtual simulation of Snowy River in Fort Stanton Cave, New Mexico. A traditional cave survey and map with cross sections was used to produce a 3D meshed surface of the cave walls using the Blender software package. Photographs were taken of the walls, ceiling, and floor and merged together. The merged montage was applied to the 3D mesh walls as a “texture”. Unity3D was used to …

SJSU Open Access Conference

Stephanie Braunstein, Head Government Documents Librarian at Louisiana State University, and Maggie Kauffman, Senior Librarian and Housing Resource Coordinator at the California Department of Housing and Community Development, will describe the who, what, why, and how of current initiatives that promote the sharing of government-funded research--at both the federal and state levels. Emphasis will be placed on recent legislative efforts (such as the Fair Access to Science and Technology Research Act [FASTR]) and on the recommendations of various professional library organizations that support academic research (such as the Association of Research Libraries [ARL]). While much of the current discussion surrounding …

Aligning The Principles Of Permaculture Design With Sustainable Open Access Practice, Jennifer Laherty, Stacy Konkiel Oct 2013

Aligning The Principles Of Permaculture Design With Sustainable Open Access Practice, Jennifer Laherty, Stacy Konkiel

SJSU Open Access Conference

Open Access has seen increased acceptance in recent years, yet academic libraries continue to struggle with supporting and growing the Open Access institutional repositories (IRs) and increasing faculty awareness of and buy-in for Open Access and related scholarly communication issues. In this presentation, we propose a reframing of Open Access and scholarly communication strategies using the twelve principles of permaculture, an environmental design theory that provides a sustainable architecture for self-maintained agricultural systems modeled from naturally occurring ecosystems (Hemenway, 2009). Such an approach is beneficial for many reasons. Permaculture emphasizes maximum benefit from minimum effort and resources, which resonates with …

Creating Oa Engagement: Peer-Reviewed Student Journals, Michal Strutin, Thomas Farrell, Christa Bailey

SJSU Open Access Conference

Interest in student peer-reviewed open-access journals is beginning to grow. Our presentation will explore what it takes to produce such a journal and what it delivers in terms of student experience. We begin with an overview of the value of student research. We will also address student involvement in the Scholarly Communication process, as presented in ACRL’s publication Intersections of Scholarly Communication and Information Literacy.

We will look at three OA peer-reviewed student journals. For each, we will learn the motivations to create such publications and how faculty advisors and editors determine their audience. Questions will include: breadth (regional, national, …

The Decision: Should We Harness Moocs To Reform Copyright Law Or To Promote Open Educational Resources?, Marcus Banks Oct 2013

The Decision: Should We Harness Moocs To Reform Copyright Law Or To Promote Open Educational Resources?, Marcus Banks

SJSU Open Access Conference

Massive open online courses (MOOCs) have the potential to radically reshape higher education. MOOCs are available to anyone with an Internet connection, for free or at sharply reduced cost compared to tuition for in-person classes. The pedagogical effectiveness of MOOCs is currently a topic of intense debate. Some people argue that MOOCs will never equal classroom instruction while others believe that they are a democratizing force with the potential to offer education of equal or greater quality than what we have known before.

This debate is likely to persist for years. Much less examined is an implicit assumption behind the …

Forging A New Path: Faculty Buy-In For The Institutional Repository And Open Access Publishing, Carol G. Hixson, Tina Neville, Deborah Henry Oct 2013

Forging A New Path: Faculty Buy-In For The Institutional Repository And Open Access Publishing, Carol G. Hixson, Tina Neville, Deborah Henry

SJSU Open Access Conference

Many institutions with institutional repositories have had difficulty getting faculty buy-in to add their content to the institutional repository. The University of South Florida St. Petersburg (USFSP), a separately accredited institution within the USF System, has experienced significant buy-in from its faculty for depositing materials in the institutional repository, known as the USFSP Digital Archive. In a small institution of 5000 students, we have established collections for over one quarter of our faculty, with almost 1400 separate submissions in only two years. Faculty have also developed an understanding of and appreciation for open-access publishing and now consult with the library …

Culture Clash: Symbolic Capital And The Limits To Open Access Journal Growth In The Humanities And Social Sciences, David Michalski Oct 2013

Culture Clash: Symbolic Capital And The Limits To Open Access Journal Growth In The Humanities And Social Sciences, David Michalski

SJSU Open Access Conference

Each year brings more open access peer-review journals to the humanities and social sciences. Yet despite this proliferation, for-profit publishers continue to dominate, and hold the most prestigious journals in their portfolios, pushing the tipping point imagined by open access advocates seemingly out of reach. This project examines the social life of academic publishing to better understand the obstacles preventing a more robust turn to open access, one that does not simply mean more journals, but one that sees the more prestigious journals opting for an open access platform.

Drawing on the work of cultural sociologist, Pierre Bourdieu, I examine …

It’S A Marathon, Not A Sprint: Launching And Sustaining The Momentum For Open Access Journals, Crystal Goldman Oct 2013

It’S A Marathon, Not A Sprint: Launching And Sustaining The Momentum For Open Access Journals, Crystal Goldman

SJSU Open Access Conference

While starting an open access journal can lead to exciting new venues for scholarship, the initial enthusiasm of a journal’s founders can wane when faced with the daunting task of keeping the momentum going after the first issue is launched. Even with a steady source of funding from a scholarly society or institution, many factors can play into the demise of an OA publication.

A journal requires an active editorial board, a pool of reliable reviewers and copy editors, and the ability to attract authors with high-quality content. Furthermore, a journal must also continuously attract readers who will then cite …

Open Access Week @ The Claremont Colleges

Open access is making research results and scholarship freely available to anyone with an internet connection rather than keeping those results hidden behind a subscription pay wall or any other financial, organizational, legal or technical barriers. Some examples of OA resources include scholarly journals, electronic theses and dissertations, textbooks, source code, images, educational resources, video, audio, and many other educational and research resources. Who knew, right?!

Come and share a story of when Open Access information saved the day or times when you couldn’t access proprietary information you or the students and faculty we serve needed. Come pick up pointers, …

Beyond The Tally Sheet: Communicating Data, Jay Forrest, Raeanne Forrest Oct 2013

Beyond The Tally Sheet: Communicating Data, Jay Forrest, Raeanne Forrest

Southeastern Library Assessment Conference

Ten years ago, the Georgia Tech Library created an electronic Tally Sheet to record transaction statistics. In the last decade, this system has been used by each of our public service departments and has evolved to make recording transactions easier for library staff to use. The system started as a unified single-page sheet with drop-downs to reflect multiple transactions and transaction details to sidebars individualized to each unit with single-click buttons and drop-downs.

Reporting of the transaction statistics has evolved from monthly and annual reports in Excel to a dynamic web-based interface. This data along with attendance data and circulation …

Before And After: Planning And Assessment Of New Library Spaces And Services, Bertha Chang, Honora Eskridge

Southeastern Library Assessment Conference

As academic libraries increasingly focus on user experience as a means of improving spaces, services, and collections, more librarians find themselves conducting studies of varying complexity to provide data supporting decisions. In January 2013, the NCSU Libraries opened a new library building, the James B. Hunt, Jr. Library. With numerous high-tech spaces, the Hunt Library is meant to define the library of the 21st century. For more than two years prior to and in the months since opening the building, subject specialist librarians have conducted studies to learn about user needs, especially those of faculty and graduate students. Faculty were …

Pivot Tables And Data Visualization For The Rookie Analyst, Tricia Clayton

Southeastern Library Assessment Conference

Have you heard others wax rhapsodic on the marvels of pivot tables, but you aren’t quite sure what they are or how they can help you? Do you wonder which type of chart or graph is most appropriate for clearly and accurately presenting your findings? If so, then this session is for you.

Assessment has become a ubiquitous component of librarianship, and skilled manipulation of quantitative data is a vital assessment tool. However, many practicing librarians have had little to no formal training in data collection, analysis and presentation. This session is aimed at rookie analysts who are learning to …

The Whole Picture - One Library's Assessment Activities, Sian Brannon Oct 2013

The Whole Picture - One Library's Assessment Activities, Sian Brannon

Southeastern Library Assessment Conference

Assessment pervades every single department in the library, and every staff person has some part to play. In preparing for a new library strategic plan, and for campus SACS reaccreditation, the University of North Texas took the opportunity to identify exactly what assessments are being done, no matter how internal they may seem. A newly formed Assessment Workgroup identified qualitative and quantitative assessments being performed for both internal and external bodies, and mapped them to demonstrate to employees everything the library does to improve service quality, make workflows more efficient, and improve education for students.

This presentation will describe our …

Quick Searching At The Library: A Usability Study On Combining Web Scale Discovery Tools For The Ultimate Search Interface, Emily King, Sarah Arnold Oct 2013

Quick Searching At The Library: A Usability Study On Combining Web Scale Discovery Tools For The Ultimate Search Interface, Emily King, Sarah Arnold

Southeastern Library Assessment Conference

Research was conducted at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill to study the usability of two search interfaces – one tabbed interface similar to the current UNC-CH library homepage and one with a single search bar similar to Google. The UNC-CH Libraries also developed a combined search tool that pulls library resources from the Serials Solutions Summon service and from the Endeca-powered catalog. The usability test involved several tasks to determine interface preference, autosuggest’s utility, and the optimal location for the “best bets” recommendation box within the results. The usability testing also included having participants respond to a …

The Drive To Create An Assessment Plan: A Department Head's Roadmap, Adriana Gonzalez, Leo Lo Oct 2013

The Drive To Create An Assessment Plan: A Department Head's Roadmap, Adriana Gonzalez, Leo Lo

Southeastern Library Assessment Conference

In an effort to become a data-driven department, the Head of Faculty and Graduate Services, in collaboration with the Office of Library Planning & Assessment, introduced a strategy for developing an assessment plan to instill a culture of assessment in the department; help team members gain confidence in the practice; and effectively utilize in-house resources to create a practical approach to assessment.

A three-prong approach is proposed.

  1. Destination: Instill a culture of assessment by demonstrating to the team that assessment can be applied on an everyday level, and can lead to effective decision making. Route: Team members participate in a …

The DMC is jointly staffed by the Libraries and the University’s Digital Literacy Center. These partners provide the UNCG community with layers of support for multimodal projects, from assignment creation and refinement to …

Assessing The Data Management Needs Of Academic Researchers, Jennifer Doty, Vince Carter Oct 2013

Assessing The Data Management Needs Of Academic Researchers, Jennifer Doty, Vince Carter

Southeastern Library Assessment Conference

This was part of a panel presentation given with Lizzy Rolando, Georgia Tech.

If properly documented, preserved, and made accessible, datasets can serve not only as the raw material underlying books and journal articles but also as stand-alone outputs of scholarly research. Academic librarians, with a long history of being stewards of scholarly documents, are increasingly taking up the task of being stewards of research data. Developing services that support research data management requires input from stakeholders across campus--faculty and student researchers, librarians, information technology experts, and other support staff. In our presentation we will discuss and reflect on recent …

"Common" Tools For Tracking The Use Of New Library Space, Joe Fennewald Oct 2013

"Common" Tools For Tracking The Use Of New Library Space, Joe Fennewald

Southeastern Library Assessment Conference

As attentive as we were in gathering information for the design of our knowledge/learning/information commons, it is important that we subsequently assess how these spaces are being used. During the 2008 ARL Library Assessment Conference, 12 easy-to-use techniques were identified to help libraries gather information which could inform design. This program examines how extensively these techniques were used and how successfully they have been applied in post-construction assessments. This workshop will review the results of a survey of approximately 100 libraries with recently completed projects. The survey gathered information on:

  • Which of the 12 techniques, if any, were used in …
