Student Performance In A Principle Of Microeconomics Course Under Hybrid And Face-To-Face Delivery, P. Verhoeven, T. Rudchenko
Faculty and Research Publications
Designing a hybrid course entails the challenge of choosing learning activities for each of the face-to-face and online environments--and sequencing and coordinating the activities across the two environments--to promote student attainment of the course’s learning objectives. This paper presents a study comparing student performance in an undergraduate Principles of Microeconomics course taught by the same instructor under hybrid (n = 51) and face-to-face (n = 24) delivery. The percentage of hybrid students completing the course (71%) was not significantly different (chi-square = .61, p = .433) than that (79%) of the face-to-face students. A regression analysis controlling for student GPA …

Reimaging Information Literacy As Metaliteracy In A Credit Library Course, Vera J. Lux
University Libraries Faculty Publications
To address the ways users interact with information introduced by digital technologies, many librarians have looked beyond information literacy to incorporate multiple literacies into their teaching. This presentation will highlight a credit library course that was reimagined around the comprehensive conceptual framework of metaliteracy. Discover how this approach engaged students in learning core skills, such as advanced search strategies and source evaluation, through assignments involving the use of search engines, social media, and emerging technologies.

The Facts Of Fiction: Information Literacy For Creative Writing, Melissa Clark
The Facts Of Fiction: Information Literacy For Creative Writing, Melissa Clark
Library Conference Presentations and Posters
Research for creative writing is completely different from conventional research: you need to immerse yourself in cultures and thought patterns not your own in order to develop believable characters and depict them, their actions, motivations, and conversations convincingly. A writer needs to be creative in their research and consult a variety of sources, including primary and archival sources, interviews and personal experience, maps and atlases, art and pictures, and sociological or psychological research. How can Librarians teach writers the information literacy skills they need and relate those skills to their immediate research needs? In this session, I will discuss my …
Hindsight Bias In The 2012 United States Presidential Election, Judith Gilbert
Hindsight Bias In The 2012 United States Presidential Election, Judith Gilbert
Modern Psychological Studies
Hindsight bias refers to the tendency for people to increase their confidence in a prediction after they've learned the outcome of an event; this is also known as the knew-it-all-along effect. The present study explored hindsight bias in the context of the 2012 United States presidential election. Participants were asked to predict various election outcomes one week before the election and then were asked to reconstruct those predictions one week after the outcome was known. The study showed strong evidence of hindsight bias and this bias did not depend on political affiliation, gender, or prior knowledge.

Topics include: essential components, best practices, and strategies for archiving law reviews online.
Welcome To The Amazon: Leading Online Retail From Local Tax Avoidance Into Your Backyard, Sherry Tehrani
Welcome To The Amazon: Leading Online Retail From Local Tax Avoidance Into Your Backyard, Sherry Tehrani
Sherry Tehrani
Online sales in the United States have increased by over 250 percent in the last ten years, reaching over 250 billion dollars in 2012.[1] Spearheaded by Amazon.com, Inc. (“Amazon”), online retailers have fed off their competitive advantage of avoiding local sales tax, and have grown to capture roughly 7 percent of the retail market.[2] The juxtaposition of this upsurge of untaxed online sales and our nationwide recession has prompted state governments with crushing deficits to take on the tax loophole.
Local governments across the U.S. have passed legislation to enforce online sales tax collection, referred to as “Amazon …

The Relevance Of Firm-Size For The Informal Sector, Mohammad Amin
The Relevance Of Firm-Size For The Informal Sector, Mohammad Amin
Mohammad Amin
Using newly collected on informal firms in 11 countries in Africa, we explore whether firm-size matters at all for the structure, conduct and performance of the firms. While firm-size is known to be an important attribute of the firms in the formal sector, it is not obvious what the relevance of firm-size is for the informal sector. Informal firms are small, many of them run alone by the owner, and have limited variation in size. Notwithstanding the limited variation in firm-size, our results show that firm-size is highly correlated with a number of firm characteristics such as job growth, labor …
Imports Of Intermediate Inputs And Country Size, Mohammad Amin, Asif Islam
Imports Of Intermediate Inputs And Country Size, Mohammad Amin, Asif Islam
Mohammad Amin
The present paper analyzes the relationship between country size and the use of imported intermediate inputs by firms in 76 developing countries. Recent evidence indicates that the use of imported inputs can have a large positive effect on productivity and growth thus motivating a better understanding of the determinants of imported inputs. Our results confirm that relative to large countries, firms in small countries are both likely to use more imported inputs and a larger share of imported inputs in their total inputs. Interestingly, adjusting for the mean level of imports of inputs and exports of goods in our sample, …
Gender Based Differences In Managerial Experience: The Case Of Informal Firms In Rwanda, Mohammad Amin, Khrystyna Kushnir
Gender Based Differences In Managerial Experience: The Case Of Informal Firms In Rwanda, Mohammad Amin, Khrystyna Kushnir
Mohammad Amin
The paper contributes to the literature on gender-based disparity in human capital by extending existing results on educational attainment to the number of years of experience that female vs. male managers have among informal or unregistered firms. Using the case of Rwanda, results show that the number of years of experience for female managers is significantly lower equaling 80-88 percent of their male counterparts. We also find that this gender disparity is higher among the relatively older managers and among firms in the relatively less developed city of Butare compared with the more developed city of Kigali.
Do Retail Firms Favor Female Managers? Evidence From Survey Data In Developing Countries, Mohammad Amin, Asif Islam
Do Retail Firms Favor Female Managers? Evidence From Survey Data In Developing Countries, Mohammad Amin, Asif Islam
Mohammad Amin
Using firm-level data for 87 developing countries, the paper analyzes how the likelihood of a firm having female vs. male top manager varies across sectors. The service sector is often considered to be more favorable towards women compared with men vis-à-vis the manufacturing sector. While our results confirm a significantly higher presence of female managers in services vs. manufacturing, the result is entirely driven by the retail firms with little contribution from other service sectors such as wholesale, construction and other services. We also find that the higher presence of female managers in the retail sector vs. manufacturing is much …

Improving Student Research: The Embedded Librarian, Melissa Clark, Linda Kott, Chris Schafer
Library Conference Presentations and Posters
How can we develop critical thinking and solid research skills in students who prefer to Google, copy, and paste? Academic quality in higher education can benefit/profit greatly from the embedded librarian approach to information literacy instruction, and this presentation will explore the possibilities. Not all instances of embedded librarianship are created equally, and this presentation explains several different models, in addition to discussing how collaborative relationships between departments and librarians may improve student research. Experience with embedded librarianship in a beginning speech communication course is explored.

As sophomores we were inspired by Beavan’s journey but also skeptical of living a completely no-impact lifestyle as college-students. Although we were motivated to try to live sustainably, our efforts were dormant until our junior year. That year we decided that we would attempt to live up to the standards set forth by Beavan--understanding that some practices would be harder …

Bagan Mural Project – Building A Robust Digital Library On Wordpress, Chia Yew Boon, Ng Kiak Peng
Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences
With the advent of powerful computing devices, ubiquitous connectivity and affordable gadgets, a large amount of research data is produced every day. In the Bagan Mural project, a history professor had taken many photographs of the mural paintings in the temples of Bagan in the course of her field trips. These photographs are simply stored in her computer folders and are therefore not easily searchable or shareable. Ideally, these photographs should be made available online and come with descriptions to provide users with a perspective on the meaning behind the murals. Over one year, NTU librarians collaborated with the professor …
