Non-Inferiority Testing: Kernel Estimation And Overlap Measure, Larie C. Ward Jan 2022

Non-Inferiority Testing: Kernel Estimation And Overlap Measure, Larie C. Ward

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

In non-inferiority testing, the decision of whether a proposed treatment is non-inferior to a reference treatment depends on model assumptions and choices of acceptable tolerance limits. Here, we consider a method that employs kernels to estimate the probability density functions of both the experimental and reference populations from two independent samples. Based on these densities, we introduce a quantity called the overlap coefficient or overlap measure. A bootstrap technique is helpful in exploring the distribution and variance empirically. We derive the distribution of this measure and define a hypothesis test that can be applied to the non-inferiority setting under some …

Approximating Bayesian Optimal Sequential Designs Using Gaussian Process Models Indexed On Belief States, Joseph Burris Jan 2022

Approximating Bayesian Optimal Sequential Designs Using Gaussian Process Models Indexed On Belief States, Joseph Burris

Theses and Dissertations

Fully sequential optimal Bayesian experimentation can offer greater utility than both traditional Bayesian designs and greedy sequential methods, but practically cannot be solved due to numerical complexity and continuous outcome spaces. Approximate solutions can be found via approximate dynamic programming, but rely on surrogate models of the expected utility at each trial of the experiment with hand-chosen features or use methods which ignore the underlying geometry of the space of probability distributions. We propose the use of Gaussian process models indexed on the belief states visited in experimentation to provide utility-agnostic surrogate models for approximating Bayesian optimal sequential designs which …

Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation studies the underlying optimization problem encountered during the early-learning stages of convolutional neural networks and introduces a training algorithm competitive with existing state-of-the-art methods. First, a Design of Experiments method is introduced to systematically measure empirical second-order Lipschitz upper bound and region size estimates for local regions of convolutional neural network loss surfaces experienced during the early-learning stages. This method demonstrates that architecture choices can significantly impact the local loss surfaces traversed during training. Next, a Design of Experiments method is used to study the effects convolutional neural network architecture hyperparameters have on different optimization routines' abilities to …

Wavelet Methods For Very-Short Term Forecasting Of Functional Time Series, Jared K. Nystrom Sep 2021

Wavelet Methods For Very-Short Term Forecasting Of Functional Time Series, Jared K. Nystrom

Theses and Dissertations

Space launch operations at Kennedy Space Center and Cape Canaveral Space Force Station (KSC/CCSFS) are complicated by unique requirements for near-real time determination of risk from lightning. Lightning forecast weather sensor networks produce data that are noisy, high volume, and high frequency time series for which traditional forecasting methods are often ill-suited. Current approaches result in significant residual uncertainties and consequentially may result in forecasting operational policies that are excessively conservative or inefficient. This work proposes a new methodology of wavelet-enabled semiparametric modeling to develop accurate and timely forecasts robust against chaotic functional data. Wavelets methods are first used to …

Eradicating Zebra Mussels: What Works?, Elijah Davies

Symposium of Student Scholars

The invasion of U.S lakes and rivers by the invasive species of zebra mussels called Dreissena polymorpha has caused catastrophic harm to the local ecosystem by reproducing and outcompeting native mussel species as well as harm to pipes leading into water sources by binding to surfaces and reproducing to the point that the mussels clog pipes. In addition, recreation areas must be closed due to the sharp shells making areas unusable. In the past, research has focused on individual molluscicides and their eradication of zebra mussels, as well as their effect on native flora and fauna. My research will contrast …

Ensemble Data Fitting For Bathymetric Models Informed By Nominal Data, Samantha Zambo Aug 2021

Ensemble Data Fitting For Bathymetric Models Informed By Nominal Data, Samantha Zambo

Dissertations

Due to the difficulty and expense of collecting bathymetric data, modeling is the primary tool to produce detailed maps of the ocean floor. Current modeling practices typically utilize only one interpolator; the industry standard is splines-in-tension.

In this dissertation we introduce a new nominal-informed ensemble interpolator designed to improve modeling accuracy in regions of sparse data. The method is guided by a priori domain knowledge provided by artificially intelligent classifiers. We recast such geomorphological classifications, such as ‘seamount’ or ‘ridge’, as nominal data which we utilize as foundational shapes in an expanded ordinary least squares regression-based algorithm. To our knowledge …

Examining Multiple Imputation For Measurement Error Correction In Count Data With Excess Zeros, Shalima Zalsha Dec 2020

Examining Multiple Imputation For Measurement Error Correction In Count Data With Excess Zeros, Shalima Zalsha

Statistical Science Theses and Dissertations

Measurement error and missing data are two common problems in wildlife population surveys. These data are collected from the environment and may be missing or measured with error when the observer’s ability to see the animal is obscured. Methods such as video transects for estimating red snapper abundance and aerial surveys for estimating moose population sizes are highly affected by these problems since total abundance will be underestimated if missing/mismeasured counts are ignored. We shall refer to this problem as visibility bias; it occurs when the true counts are observed when visibility is high, partially observed when visibility is low …
