The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of a post-abortion counseling program. It was hypothesized that unmarried adolescents who received counseling following a therapeutic abortion would exhibit significantly fewer negative affects than those who received no counseling. The affects measured were anxiety, depression, hostility, and guilt. Twenty clients were randomly selected for this study. Prior to the abortion, the twenty clients were-tested for negative responses to the unwanted pregnancy. Ten clients received post-abortion counseling twice following the abortion and were tested at each visit for negative affective responses to the abortion. The other ten clients received no …

An experimental study was conducted on thirty primiparae during the postpartum period to determine if individualized instruction regarding infant feeding would result in a lower level of maternal concern in this area. The study sample was randomly and evenly divided into a control and an experimental group. It was statistically determined that the two groups were homogeneous in regard to age, education, occupation, previous information (prenatal classes and reading) and help at home. Root resorption is a constant finding on the roots of replanted teeth. In this study it was suggested that root resorption is perhaps related to inflammation and that teeth incubated in an anti-inflammatory agent such as triamcinolone acetonide, a corticosteroid, before replantation would have less resorption. To investigate this hypothesis nineteen mature teeth in five mongrel dogs were extracted and replanted. Ten of the teeth were incubated for five minutes in the steroid and nine control teeth for the same period in a saline solution. The purpose of this study was to determine whether uncooperative behavior and a quantitative measurement of depression exist in the same patient in a public health nurse's caseload. Seven full-time public health nurses were randomly selected from the San Bernardino Public Health Department staff. They reviewed their caseloads and selected all the patients who met the general criteria.

This thesis describes an in vivo perfusion apparatus which can continuously deliver controlled quantities of solutions to localized, contralateral intraoral areas in albino rats. Three animals were per fused on the experimental area (the mesial sulcular area of the maxillary first molar) on one side with tap water and Trypan blue. Localization of the solution delivered and minimal histological changes due to the presence of the apparatus was demonstrated on these animals. Solutions of .5%, 1%, and 2% hyaluronidase and collagenase were perfused on the experimental areas of nine animals. When both enzymes were used, hyaluronidase always preceded collagenase in …

A study of orthodontic treatment results employing Class II Armstrong Adjustable Intermaxillary Springs was made on twenty-eight randomly selected patients which were treated by Dr. Maclay Armstrong.

The skeletal and dental changes observed during treatment with the Class II springs was compared with those results observed when comparable type malocclusions were treated with Class II elastics. A list of changes which were observed during treatment with Class II elastics was compiled from the literature using individual studies published by Ricketts, Creekmore and Hanes.

The nature of epithelium and the remarkable facility with which it aggressively covers granulation tissue, suggests that removal of the sulcular epithelium surrounding the extraction wound of a tooth to be replanted could promote reattachment of the periodontal tissues at a more nearly ideal coronal level. To investigate this hypothesis twenty mature teeth in five mongrel dogs were experimentally replanted. One half of them were replanted in alveoli around which the crevicular epithelium had been removed, the remaining teeth without creviculoectomy acting as controls. Postpartum depression was thought to be an important component of maternity blues and was the factor explored in this study. Sleep was hypothesized as a factor affecting either the occurrence or severity of postpartum depression. Hence, the purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between sleep deprivation and postpartum depression.

Twenty patients were interviewed one to three weeks prior to their expected dates of delivery. An experimental study was done to determine the effectiveness of an instructional method for older ambulatory patients taking prescribed self-administered medications. This method was developed to emphasize the physicians' specific orders, the purpose of medications, feedback of instruction and a plan for remembering and recording medications. The hypothesis tested was that a selected group of ambulatory patients age 60 and over with the instructional method would make significantly fewer errors than a similar control group with no instructions.

A study was conducted to identify selected needs of patients receiving nursing care at home through the Loma Linda University Hospital Department of Home Care. The descriptive survey was used. Fifty patient home care records were reviewed.

From the general information secured, it was found that 68 percent of the patients studied were women. One-half of all patients were under sixty years of age. Fifty-four percent lived with a spouse only, while 26 percent lived with their family. There were 20 percent who lived alone and six of these were over the age of sixty. The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of midpalatal suture separation on the craniofacial complex by quantitative roentgenographic analysis.

Ten female Macaca mulatta monkeys were randomly grouped for experimentation. Six animals were paired in groups for two months of treatment, four months of treatment followed by two months of post retention, and six months of treatment. The four remaining monkeys were paired and served as control animals for two and six month periods. Total activation of the expansion appliances in the treated animals was completed over a three week period.

A study was undertaken to survey by questionnaire and interview methods the breakfast and snack habits of Adventist and non-Adventist adolescents. The purposes of the study were: (I) to find out if there is any difference in the practices of Adventist and non-Adventist teenagers, and (2) to determine their attitudes toward snacking and omission of breakfast.

Results of the questionnaire were coded, punched onto IBM cards, and fed into computing machines for item and statistical analysis. Five by seven inch black and white photographs were shown to thirty patients and thirty registered nurses. The subjects were controlled in regard to sex, race, residence, language, and physical and emotional orientation. The morphologic characteristics of the oral cavity in five contemporary Western Indian and Alaskan Eskimo groups have been investigated by the use of study models of the dental archs. The sample consisted of 216 individuals, including 44 Navajos, 43 Apaches, 40 Papagos, 42 Pimas and 47 Alaskan Eskimos.

A study comparing the 3- and 5-meal plans of food service, as used in long-stay geriatric units in San Bernardino County, have been compared. Three homes utilizing the 5-meal plan and three utilizing the 3-meal plan, to serve as controls, were chosen. A random sample of ten patients from each home was observed for three days to find the daily average nutrients in the foods served, eaten, and wasted. Also, interviews to compare factual information and attitudes were utilized for sample patients and personnel. The nutritional data was analyzed on the computer.

It was the purpose of this survey to determine what constitutes effective and ineffective clinical instruction from the student's viewpoint, and to make the findings available. The descriptive survey method using the critical incident technique was used as the method of research. A critical incident report form was constructed as a tool for gathering the data. There were 117 students of nursing who submitted 166 incidents; 52 per cent were of effective instruction and 48 per cent of ineffective instruction.

This study was conducted on seventy-five children, three to eight years of age. The purpose was to compare a three-minute axillary with a three-minute rectal temperature. Known factors which might influence the findings were eliminated. These were emotional stress, physical exercise, antipyretic medications, cooling and heating measures, gastro-intestinal disturbances, and croupettes or oxygen tents. The range of the difference between the temperatures was from 0.8 degrees to 2.2 degrees with the mean difference of 1.13 degrees.
