The Correlation Between Sleep And Lifespan In Drosophila Melanogaster, Joshua Randall Lisse Jan 2019

The Correlation Between Sleep And Lifespan In Drosophila Melanogaster, Joshua Randall Lisse

Masters Theses

”Adequate sleep is associated with an individual’s health. Too little sleep is associated with many health problems, including cardiovascular disease, obesity, and a general increase in all-cause mortality. Yet the molecular changes that link poor sleep and changes in health are still not well understood. Individuals have a unique daily need for sleep, and deviations from the animal’s regular sleeping patterns can be indicative of, or result in, underlying changes in its health. Therefore, we hypothesize that changes in the sleep architecture in Drosophila melanogaster reflect changes in the fly’s health.

We determined sleep architecture in wild-type male flies over …

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Aneurysm hemodynamics has been associated with wall histology and inflammation. We investigated associations between local hemodynamics and focal wall changes visible intraoperatively. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Computational fluid dynamics models were constructed from 3D images of 65 aneurysms treated surgically. Aneurysm regions with different visual appearances were identified in intraoperative videos: 1) “atherosclerotic” (yellow), 2) “hyperplastic” (white), 3) “thin” (red), 4) rupture site, and 5) “normal” (similar to parent artery), They were marked on 3D reconstructions. Regional hemodynamics was characterized by the following: wall shear stress, oscillatory shear index, relative residence time, wall shear stress gradient and divergence, …

Essays On Mixture Models, Trevor R. Camper Jan 2019

Essays On Mixture Models, Trevor R. Camper

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

When considering statistical scenarios where one can sample from populations that are not of interest for the purposes of a study, bivariate mixture models can be used to study the effect that this missampling can have on parameter estimation. In this thesis, we will examine the behavior that bivariate mixture models have on two statistical constructs: Cronbach's alpha \cite{C51}, and Spearman's rho \cite{S04}. Chapter 1 will introduce notions of mixture models and the definition of bias under mixture models which will serve as the central concept of this thesis. Chapter 2 will investigate a particular psychometric issue known as insufficient …

Some New Generalized Distribution Via Lindley-Weibuli And Lindley-Log-Logistic Distributions With Applications, Soliu A. Raheem Jan 2019

Some New Generalized Distribution Via Lindley-Weibuli And Lindley-Log-Logistic Distributions With Applications, Soliu A. Raheem

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

In this thesis, new generalized distributions, namely Beta Lindley-Log-Logistic (BLLLoG) distribution, Marshall-Olkin Lindley-Weibull (MOLW) distribution, and Gamma LindleyWeibull (GLW) distribution as well as related sub-distributions are proposed. Series expansion of the densities are obtained. Statistical properties of these distributions, including hazard function, reverse hazard function, moments, reliability, quantile function, mean deviations, Bonferroni and Lorenz curves, entropy and Fisher information are derived. Method of maximum likelihood is used to estimate the parameters of the new distributions. Monte Carlo simulation is employed to examine the performance of the proposed distributions. Applications of the generalized distributions to real lifetime data are presented to …

Variable Selection In Accelerated Failure Time (Aft) Frailty Models: An Application Of Penalized Quasi-Likelihood, Sarbesh R. Pandeya Jan 2019

Variable Selection In Accelerated Failure Time (Aft) Frailty Models: An Application Of Penalized Quasi-Likelihood, Sarbesh R. Pandeya

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Variable selection is one of the standard ways of selecting models in large scale datasets. It has applications in many fields of research study, especially in large multi-center clinical trials. One of the prominent methods in variable selection is the penalized likelihood, which is both consistent and efficient. However, the penalized selection is significantly challenging under the influence of random (frailty) covariates. It is even more complicated when there is involvement of censoring as it may not have a closed-form solution for the marginal log-likelihood. Therefore, we applied the penalized quasi-likelihood (PQL) approach that approximates the solution for such a …

Spatiotemporal Dynamics Of Nitrogen And Carbon Biogeochemistry In A Wetland-Stream Sequence, Patrick E. Hurley Jan 2019

Spatiotemporal Dynamics Of Nitrogen And Carbon Biogeochemistry In A Wetland-Stream Sequence, Patrick E. Hurley

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Studies of aquatic ecosystems often segregate streams from the influential ponds, lakes, and wetland zones that act as important transitions between terrestrial and fluvial systems. Across the aquatic landscape, these zones interact to form linked ecosystems that function as discrete nutrient processing domains, shifting biogeochemical signals due to spatial and temporal variability in hydrologic and biologic controls. Using a mass-balance approach, we profiled nutrient dynamics along a 23-km wetland-stream sequence over three seasons. Hydrologic, morphologic, and biologic conditions, as well as landscape attributes, were quantified to determine potential controls on biogeochemical cycling in a tributary of the Upper Clark Fork …

High Dimensional Outlier Detection, Omid Khormali Jan 2019

High Dimensional Outlier Detection, Omid Khormali

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

In statistics and data science, outliers are data points that differ greatly from other observations in a data set. They are important attributes of the data because they can dramatically influence patterns and relationships manifested by non-outliers. It is therefore very important to detect and adequately deal with outliers. Recently, a novel algorithm, the ROMA algorithm, has been proposed [11]. In this paper, we propose a modification of the ROMA algorithm that reduces its computational complexity from $O(n^2 m)$ to $O((n/(2^m-o(1)))^2 m)$ where $n$ is the number of data points and $m$ is the dimension of the space. And as …

Biodiversity And Distribution Of Benthic Foraminifera In Harrington Sound, Bermuda: The Effects Of Physical And Geochemical Factors On Dominant Taxa, Nam Le Jan 2019

Biodiversity And Distribution Of Benthic Foraminifera In Harrington Sound, Bermuda: The Effects Of Physical And Geochemical Factors On Dominant Taxa, Nam Le

Honors Theses

Harrington Sound, Bermuda, is a nearly enclosed lagoon acting as a subtropical/tropical, carbonate-rich basin in which carbonate sediments, reef patches, and carbonate-producing organisms accumulate. Here, one of the most important calcareous groups is the Foraminifera. Analyses of common benthic orders, including miliolids (Quinqueloculina and Triloculina spp.) and rotaliids (Homotrema rubrum, Elphidium spp., and Ammonia beccarii), are essential in understanding past and present environmental conditions affecting the island's coastal environment. These taxa have been studied previously; however, factors explaining their individual patterns of abundance in the Sound are not well detailed. The goal of this study is …

Modeling Stochastically Intransitive Relationships In Paired Comparison Data, Ryan Patrick Alexander Mcshane Jan 2019

Modeling Stochastically Intransitive Relationships In Paired Comparison Data, Ryan Patrick Alexander Mcshane

Statistical Science Theses and Dissertations

If the Warriors beat the Rockets and the Rockets beat the Spurs, does that mean that the Warriors are better than the Spurs? Sophisticated fans would argue that the Warriors are better by the transitive property, but could Spurs fans make a legitimate argument that their team is better despite this chain of evidence?

We first explore the nature of intransitive (rock-scissors-paper) relationships with a graph theoretic approach to the method of paired comparisons framework popularized by Kendall and Smith (1940). Then, we focus on the setting where all pairs of items, teams, players, or objects have been compared to …

On Cluster Robust Models, José Bayoán Santiago Calderón Jan 2019

On Cluster Robust Models, José Bayoán Santiago Calderón

CGU Theses & Dissertations

Cluster robust models are a kind of statistical models that attempt to estimate parameters considering potential heterogeneity in treatment effects. Absent heterogeneity in treatment effects, the partial and average treatment effect are the same. When heterogeneity in treatment effects occurs, the average treatment effect is a function of the various partial treatment effects and the composition of the population of interest. The first chapter explores the performance of common estimators as a function of the presence of heterogeneity in treatment effects and other characteristics that may influence their performance for estimating average treatment effects. The second chapter examines various approaches …

Serial Testing For Detection Of Multilocus Genetic Interactions, Zaid T. Al-Khaledi Jan 2019

Serial Testing For Detection Of Multilocus Genetic Interactions, Zaid T. Al-Khaledi

Theses and Dissertations--Statistics

A method to detect relationships between disease susceptibility and multilocus genetic interactions is the Multifactor-Dimensionality Reduction (MDR) technique pioneered by Ritchie et al. (2001). Since its introduction, many extensions have been pursued to deal with non-binary outcomes and/or account for multiple interactions simultaneously. Studying the effects of multilocus genetic interactions on continuous traits (blood pressure, weight, etc.) is one case that MDR does not handle. Culverhouse et al. (2004) and Gui et al. (2013) proposed two different methods to analyze such a case. In their research, Gui et al. (2013) introduced the Quantitative Multifactor-Dimensionality Reduction (QMDR) that uses the overall …

Data Patterns Discovery Using Unsupervised Learning, Rachel A. Lewis Jan 2019

Data Patterns Discovery Using Unsupervised Learning, Rachel A. Lewis

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Self-care activities classification poses significant challenges in identifying children’s unique functional abilities and needs within the exceptional children healthcare system. The accuracy of diagnosing a child's self-care problem, such as toileting or dressing, is highly influenced by an occupational therapists’ experience and time constraints. Thus, there is a need for objective means to detect and predict in advance the self-care problems of children with physical and motor disabilities. We use clustering to discover interesting information from self-care problems, perform automatic classification of binary data, and discover outliers. The advantages are twofold: the advancement of knowledge on identifying self-care problems in …

Non-Marginal Decisions: A Novel Bayesian Multiple Testing Procedure, Noirrit Kiran Chandra, Sourabh Bhattacharya Jan 2019

Non-Marginal Decisions: A Novel Bayesian Multiple Testing Procedure, Noirrit Kiran Chandra, Sourabh Bhattacharya

Journal Articles

In this paper, we consider the problem of multiple testing where the hypotheses are dependent. In most of the existing literature, either Bayesian or non-Bayesian, the decision rules mainly focus on the validity of the test procedure rather than actually utilizing the dependency to increase efficiency. Moreover, the decisions regarding different hypotheses are marginal in the sense that they do not depend upon each other directly. However, in realistic situations, the hypotheses are usually dependent, and hence it is desirable that the decisions regarding the dependent hypotheses are taken jointly. In this article, we develop a novel Bayesian multiple testing …

Bayesian Hierarchical Meta-Analysis Of Asymptomatic Ebola Seroprevalence, Peter Brody-Moore Jan 2019

Bayesian Hierarchical Meta-Analysis Of Asymptomatic Ebola Seroprevalence, Peter Brody-Moore

CMC Senior Theses

The continued study of asymptomatic Ebolavirus infection is necessary to develop a more complete understanding of Ebola transmission dynamics. This paper conducts a meta-analysis of eight studies that measure seroprevalence (the number of subjects that test positive for anti-Ebolavirus antibodies in their blood) in subjects with household exposure or known case-contact with Ebola, but that have shown no symptoms. In our two random effects Bayesian hierarchical models, we find estimated seroprevalences of 8.76% and 9.72%, significantly higher than the 3.3% found by a previous meta-analysis of these eight studies. We also produce a variation of this meta-analysis where we exclude …

Generalizability Of Effect Sizes Within Aviation Research: More Samples Are Needed, Rian Mehta, Stephen Rice, Scott Winter, Tyler Spence, Maarten Edwards, Karla Candelaria-Oquendo Jan 2019

Generalizability Of Effect Sizes Within Aviation Research: More Samples Are Needed, Rian Mehta, Stephen Rice, Scott Winter, Tyler Spence, Maarten Edwards, Karla Candelaria-Oquendo

International Journal of Aviation, Aeronautics, and Aerospace

It is often the case that researchers attempt to generalize findings from a single convenience sample to the population. They may also wish to make the claim that the sample effect sizes they discover are reasonably similar to the population parameters. The current study attempts to show that they can be mistaken in this assumption, and that different samples can vary dramatically in effect sizes due to myriad discrepancies, such as demographics, sample size, and random error, among other aspects of the samples. Seven hundred and eighty-one participants were recruited from Amazon’s Mechanical Turk, Florida Institute of Technology, Embry-Riddle Aeronautical …

Mathematically Modeling The Role Of Triglyceride Production On Leptin Resistance, Yu Zhao, Daniel Burkow, Baojun Song Jan 2019

Mathematically Modeling The Role Of Triglyceride Production On Leptin Resistance, Yu Zhao, Daniel Burkow, Baojun Song

Department of Applied Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

Diet-induced obesity is becoming more common all over the world, which is increasing the prevalence of obesity-induced chronic diseases such as diabetes, coronary heart disease, cancer, and sleep apnea. Many experimental results show that obesity is often associated with an elevated concentration of plasma leptin and triglycerides. Triglycerides inhibit the passage of leptin across the blood–brain barrier (BBB) to signal the hypothalamus to suppress appetite. However, it is still not clear how triglyceride concentration affects leptin transport across the BBB and energy balance. In this paper, we propose a novel ordinary differential equations model describing the role of leptin in …

This paper will investigate global warming and its effects on natural disasters. I will review the historic movements of climate change and activism, as well as the current discussions surrounding global warming. Secondly, I will examine various datasets, paying attention to the severity and frequency of specific natural disasters. I will then touch briefly on the topic of catastrophe modeling as it relates to the increased risk and losses associated with the discussed natural disasters and how those put the problem of global warming in a framework which financial and government institutions can grasp. I will also be analyzing economic …

Automatic 13C Chemical Shift Reference Correction Of Protein Nmr Spectral Data Using Data Mining And Bayesian Statistical Modeling, Xi Chen Jan 2019

Automatic 13C Chemical Shift Reference Correction Of Protein Nmr Spectral Data Using Data Mining And Bayesian Statistical Modeling, Xi Chen

Theses and Dissertations--Molecular and Cellular Biochemistry

Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) is a highly versatile analytical technique for studying molecular configuration, conformation, and dynamics, especially of biomacromolecules such as proteins. However, due to the intrinsic properties of NMR experiments, results from the NMR instruments require a refencing step before the down-the-line analysis. Poor chemical shift referencing, especially for 13C in protein Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) experiments, fundamentally limits and even prevents effective study of biomacromolecules via NMR. There is no available method that can rereference carbon chemical shifts from protein NMR without secondary experimental information such as structure or resonance assignment.

To solve this problem, we …

Bayesian Analysis For The Intraclass Model And For The Quantile Semiparametric Mixed-Effects Double Regression Models, Duo Zhang Jan 2019

Bayesian Analysis For The Intraclass Model And For The Quantile Semiparametric Mixed-Effects Double Regression Models, Duo Zhang

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports

This dissertation consists of three distinct but related research projects. The first two projects focus on objective Bayesian hypothesis testing and estimation for the intraclass correlation coefficient in linear models. The third project deals with Bayesian quantile inference for the semiparametric mixed-effects double regression models. In the first project, we derive the Bayes factors based on the divergence-based priors for testing the intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC). The hypothesis testing of the ICC is used to test the uncorrelatedness in multilevel modeling, and it has not well been studied from an objective Bayesian perspective. Simulation results show that the two sorts …

Numeracy And Social Justice: A Wide, Deep, And Longstanding Intersection, Kira Hamman, Victor Piercey, Samuel L. Tunstall Jan 2019

Numeracy And Social Justice: A Wide, Deep, And Longstanding Intersection, Kira Hamman, Victor Piercey, Samuel L. Tunstall

Numeracy

We discuss the connection between the numeracy and social justice movements both in historical context and in its modern incarnation. The intersection between numeracy and social justice encompasses a wide variety of disciplines and quantitative topics, but within that variety there are important commonalities. We examine the importance of sound quantitative measures for understanding social issues and the necessity of interdisciplinary collaboration in this work. Particular reference is made to the papers in the first part of the Numeracy special collection on social justice, which appear in this issue.

Snap Scholar: The User Experience Of Engaging With Academic Research Through A Tappable Stories Medium, Ieva Burk Jan 2019

Snap Scholar: The User Experience Of Engaging With Academic Research Through A Tappable Stories Medium, Ieva Burk

CMC Senior Theses

With the shift to learn and consume information through our mobile devices, most academic research is still only presented in long-form text. The Stanford Scholar Initiative has explored the segment of content creation and consumption of academic research through video. However, there has been another popular shift in presenting information from various social media platforms and media outlets in the past few years. Snapchat and Instagram have introduced the concept of tappable “Stories” that have gained popularity in the realm of content consumption.

To accelerate the growth of the creation of these research talks, I propose an alternative to video: …

Quantifying Human Biological Age: A Machine Learning Approach, Syed Ashiqur Rahman Jan 2019

Quantifying Human Biological Age: A Machine Learning Approach, Syed Ashiqur Rahman

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Quantifying human biological age is an important and difficult challenge. Different biomarkers and numerous approaches have been studied for biological age prediction, each with its advantages and limitations. In this work, we first introduce a new anthropometric measure (called Surface-based Body Shape Index, SBSI) that accounts for both body shape and body size, and evaluate its performance as a predictor of all-cause mortality. We analyzed data from the National Health and Human Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). Based on the analysis, we introduce a new body shape index constructed from four important anthropometric determinants of body shape and body size: body …

Adding Value To Numerical Weather Predictions For The Aviation Industry In South Africa., Quinton Jacobs Mr., Willem A. Landman Prof. Jan 2019

Adding Value To Numerical Weather Predictions For The Aviation Industry In South Africa., Quinton Jacobs Mr., Willem A. Landman Prof.

International Journal of Aviation, Aeronautics, and Aerospace

The main objective of this study is to determine whether human forecasters at the main airports of South Africa add value to the raw numerical weather prediction model output when they provide forecast services to the aviation industry. Dataset pairs of weather observations made at these airports and terminal aerodrome forecasts are constructed for three forecast systems: the human forecasters, persistence forecast and the raw output from the 12 km resolution Unified Model administered by the South African Weather Service. These three dataset pairs are independently evaluated by a forecast verification system developed at the South African Weather Service. A …

Methods For Evaluating Dropout Attrition In Survey Data, Camille J. Hochheimer Jan 2019

Methods For Evaluating Dropout Attrition In Survey Data, Camille J. Hochheimer

Theses and Dissertations

As researchers increasingly use web-based surveys, the ease of dropping out in the online setting is a growing issue in ensuring data quality. One theory is that dropout or attrition occurs in phases that can be generalized to phases of high dropout and phases of stable use. In order to detect these phases, several methods are explored. First, existing methods and user-specified thresholds are applied to survey data where significant changes in the dropout rate between two questions is interpreted as the start or end of a high dropout phase. Next, survey dropout is considered as a time-to-event outcome and …

Genome-Wide Systems Genetics Of Alcohol Consumption And Dependence, Kristin Mignogna Jan 2019

Genome-Wide Systems Genetics Of Alcohol Consumption And Dependence, Kristin Mignogna

Theses and Dissertations

Widely effective treatment for alcohol use disorder is not yet available, because the exact biological mechanisms that underlie this disorder are not completely understood. One way to gain a better understanding of these mechanisms is to examine the genetic frameworks that contribute to the risk for developing this disorder. This dissertation examines genetic association data in combination with gene expression networks in the brain to identify functional groups of genes associated with alcohol consumption and dependence.

The first study took advantage of the behavioral complexity of human samples, and experimental capabilities provided by mouse models, by co-analyzing gene expression networks …

Statistical Designs For Network A/B Testing, Victoria V. Pokhilko Jan 2019

Statistical Designs For Network A/B Testing, Victoria V. Pokhilko

Theses and Dissertations

A/B testing refers to the statistical procedure of experimental design and analysis to compare two treatments, A and B, applied to different testing subjects. It is widely used by technology companies such as Facebook, LinkedIn, and Netflix, to compare different algorithms, web-designs, and other online products and services. The subjects participating in these online A/B testing experiments are users who are connected in different scales of social networks. Two connected subjects are similar in terms of their social behaviors, education and financial background, and other demographic aspects. Hence, it is only natural to assume that their reactions to online products …

Statistical Methods For Joint Analysis Of Multiple Phenotypes And Their Applications For Phewas, Xueling Li Jan 2019

Statistical Methods For Joint Analysis Of Multiple Phenotypes And Their Applications For Phewas, Xueling Li

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports

Genome-wide association studies (GWAS) have successfully detected tens of thousands of robust SNP-trait associations. Earlier researches have primarily focused on association studies of genetic variants and some well-defined functions or phenotypic traits. Emerging evidence suggests that pleiotropy, the phenomenon of one genetic variant affects multiple phenotypes, is widespread, especially in complex human diseases. Therefore, individual phenotype analyses may lose statistical power to identify the underlying genetic mechanism. Contrasting with single phenotype analyses, joint analysis of multiple phenotypes exploits the correlations between phenotypes and aggregates multiple weak marginal effects and is therefore likely to provide new insights into the functional consequences …

Does It Take Three To Dance The Tango? Organizational Design, Triadic Structures And Boundary Spanning Across Subunits, Stefano Tasselli, Alberto Caimo Jan 2019

Does It Take Three To Dance The Tango? Organizational Design, Triadic Structures And Boundary Spanning Across Subunits, Stefano Tasselli, Alberto Caimo

Articles

In this paper, we investigate the processes of boundary spanning across subunits within organizational networks. We hypothesize that patterns of advice across organizational subunits are explained by different triadic mechanisms depending on the organizational design of the intra-organizational network. In organizational networks characterized by flat hierarchy, we found triadic cyclic closure to be positively associated to boundary spanning across subunits; but when the network reflects an organizational structure with formal hierarchical differentiation among members, then we found triadic transitive closure to be associated to boundary spanning across subunits. We test these predictions in two empirical studies consisting of two organizational …

Statistical Modeling Of Influenza-Like-Illness In Montana Using Spatial And Temporal Methods, Benjamin A. Stark Jan 2019

Statistical Modeling Of Influenza-Like-Illness In Montana Using Spatial And Temporal Methods, Benjamin A. Stark

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Studying air pollution and public health has been a historically important question in science. It has long been hypothesized that severe air pollution conditions lead to negative implications in basic human health. Primarily, areas thats are prone to severe degrees of human pollution are the focus of such studies. Such research relating to less populated areas are scarce, and this scarcity raises the question of how such pollution dynamics (human-made and natural) influence human health in more rural areas.

The aim of this study is to explore this hole in research; in particular we explore possible links between air pollution …

Colloidal And Truly Dissolved Metal(Loid)S In Wastewater Lagoons And Their Removal With Floating Treatment Wetlands, Lauren Sullivan Jan 2019

Colloidal And Truly Dissolved Metal(Loid)S In Wastewater Lagoons And Their Removal With Floating Treatment Wetlands, Lauren Sullivan

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Climate change is predicted to cause continuing declines in late-season streamflow, thus increasing the relative contribution of wastewater effluent to surface water flows. Wastewater effluent represents a critical point source of metal and metalloid contamination to aquatic ecosystems and wastewater lagoons are the most common wastewater treatment system in the rural United States. Although the fraction of total wastewater metals and metalloids in "dissolved" forms (defined here asnm) likely drives the potential for negative effects on receiving waters, this broad operational definition lumps truly dissolved solutes (nm) with small colloids and nanomaterials (1-450 nm; hereafter colloids). This size distinction may …
