Beyond The Lace Index: Benchmarking Machine Learning Architectures And Explaining 30-Day Hospital Readmission Risk With Shap Analysis, Carl E. Hughes Iii
Beyond The Lace Index: Benchmarking Machine Learning Architectures And Explaining 30-Day Hospital Readmission Risk With Shap Analysis, Carl E. Hughes Iii
Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects
Unplanned 30-day hospital readmission remains a fundamental challenge in US healthcare, associated with increased risk to patient recovery and representing an estimated $52.4 billion in annual expenses (Beauvais et al., 2022). While the rigorously validated LACE index serves as the clinical standard for readmission modeling, its linear structure and four explanatory variables lack the complexity to capture the high-dimensional and interactive nature of patient risk. This study utilizes an admission granularity level cohort of the MIMIC-IV database to develop and compare machine learning architectures against the baseline LACE index. Due to the imbalanced prevalence of readmission, the penalized logistic regression, …
Modeling Housing Prices: Which Features Matter Most?, Alex Ruvolo
Modeling Housing Prices: Which Features Matter Most?, Alex Ruvolo
Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects
This paper attempts to find the biggest factors and traits that influence the cost of housing. This will include the lot size, type of street, utilities, neighborhood, year built, heating, electrical, yard size, number of different rooms, age, condition, and others. I will attempt to answer the question of whether the prices of houses have changed within the last 5 to 10 years, and obviously this is an easy question to answer. However, the bigger question beyond this is are the main factors affecting housing prices all important in explaining this relationship? Is one factor more important than the rest …

Effects Of Chain Length, Saturation, And Bases On Saponification, Sarah Fenik
Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects
This project will analyze the effects of chain length and saturation of fatty acids on saponification processes, as well as the effects of the base used in the reaction. Stearic acid, lauric acid, and oleic acid will be used for the fatty acid comparisons, and sodium hydroxide and potassium hydroxide will be used for the base comparisons. Stearic acid is considered a long chain fatty acid, while lauric acid is considered a short chain fatty acid. Oleic acid is a monounsaturated fatty acid. Five soap products are be made: sodium stearate, sodium laurate, sodium oleate, potassium stearate, and potassium oleate. …
Pitching The Use Of Squared And Interaction Terms In Regression Via Baseball Heat Maps, Lucas Chepelsky
Pitching The Use Of Squared And Interaction Terms In Regression Via Baseball Heat Maps, Lucas Chepelsky
Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects
This project will examine the impact of using second-order terms in regression. For illustration, we use an example of regression where a baseball player's three by three heat map, including the height and distance from inside to outside of the pitch, are variables used to predict batting average. We find that second-order terms are crucial in discovering nonlinear relationships and interaction effects in regression models, and maintain that the common practice of using first-order additive models is insufficient.
To Mean Or Not To Mean: An Investigation Of Regression To The Mean, Hunter Ellis
To Mean Or Not To Mean: An Investigation Of Regression To The Mean, Hunter Ellis
Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects
Regression to the mean is a statistical phenomenon that can hide important characteristics of what is truly happening in a research study. Caused by statistical randomness, regression to the mean occurs when extreme values, high or low, are followed by less extreme values. To correctly deal with it, one must understand what it is and how to distinguish its effect on conclusions made from the data. This paper provides examples of regression to the mean in both a medical and academic performance study and explains simple identifiers one can observe. Those are then followed up by the introduction of the …
Ensemble Classification: An Analysis Of The Random Forest Model, Jarod Korn
Ensemble Classification: An Analysis Of The Random Forest Model, Jarod Korn
Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects
The random forest model proposed by Dr. Leo Breiman in 2001 is an ensemble machine learning method for classification prediction and regression. In the following paper, we will conduct an analysis on the random forest model with a focus on how the model works, how it is applied in software, and how it performs on a set of data. To fully understand the model, we will introduce the concept of decision trees, give a summary of the CART model, explain in detail how the random forest model operates, discuss how the model is implemented in software, demonstrate the model by …
Statistical Modeling Of Bankruptcy Data, Andrew Elsfelder
Statistical Modeling Of Bankruptcy Data, Andrew Elsfelder
Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects
My project uses a dataset of bankrupt and non-bankrupt companies in Taiwan from 1999 to 2009. This data was collected from the Taiwan Economic Journal. The statistical methods I used to model the data are CHAID, CART, and logistic regression. The models created are tools that can predict if a company is bankrupt, or not-bankrupt based on other data about the company. I created multiple models for each of the methods to find the best model for each method. I then analyzed the output from each method. Lastly, I determined which model was the best for this data based on …

A Review Of The Utility Of Bayesian Network Models, Luke Magyar
A Review Of The Utility Of Bayesian Network Models, Luke Magyar
Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects
Bayesian Networks are probabilistic models built from conditional probability tables that relate two observable instances to one another in parent-child fashion. The networks’ strength lies in their ability to use inferential logic to make likelihood assessments about a parent node based on an observation of its child. Additionally, they make it very easy to combine quantitative data with qualitative knowledge from industry experts. These abilities make them very attractive for use as formulation tools in the paint and rubber industries. Paint and rubber formulation has long proven to be a challenging task because companies have a difficult time compiling the …
Decision Trees: Predicting Future Losses For Insurance Data, Amanda Lahrmann
Decision Trees: Predicting Future Losses For Insurance Data, Amanda Lahrmann
Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects
Big data is a term that has come to the spotlight for companies within recent years. Data analysis and business intelligence have become prominent sectors of companies and agencies. But what is big data? How has it impacted large companies and agencies? Why must it be embraced?
The best way to approach utilizing a big data set is to establish a question to answer. For this data set, the question that must be answered is “What variables cause a loss to occur?” To answer this question, first, we must understand what is meant by a “loss”, and take a look …

Comparison Of Option Price From Black-Scholes Model To Actual Values, Matthew J. Krznaric
Comparison Of Option Price From Black-Scholes Model To Actual Values, Matthew J. Krznaric
Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects
The Black-Scholes model is a widely used method for pricing European-style options in a straightforward way, through the use of calculations and ideal market assumptions. Due to certain unrealistic ideal conditions exercised by the model, The Black-Scholes technique of pricing options may not be entirely accurate in implementation. This paper addresses these problems due to the model limitations, determining how The Black-Scholes method compares to the results when using the actual data. Using a mix of historical S&P500 data and generated normal distributions, we first calculated and graphed option prices through the Black-Scholes formulas. With the help of R, we …
