A Mathematical Model For Outgassing And Contamination, Weifu Fang, Meir Shillor, E. Stahel, E. Epstein, C. Ly, J. Mcniel, E. Zaron Oct 1991

A Mathematical Model For Outgassing And Contamination, Weifu Fang, Meir Shillor, E. Stahel, E. Epstein, C. Ly, J. Mcniel, E. Zaron

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications

A model for the mathematical description of the processes of outgassing and contamination in a vacuum system is proposed. The underlying assumptions are diffusion in the source, convection and diffusion in the cavity, mass transfer across the source-cavity interface, and a generalization of the Langmuir isotherm for the sorption kinetics on the target. Three approximations are considered where the asymptotic behavior of the model for large time is shown as well as the dependence and sensitivity of the model on some of the parameters. Some numerical examples of the full model are then presented together with a proof of the …

The Effects Of Intent: Do We Know How Legal Standards Work?, Theodore Eisenberg, Sheri Lynn Johnson

Cornell Law Faculty Publications

No one knows how the intent standard works in racial discrimination cases, though many have speculated. To test the speculation, this study examines how the intent standard actually operates. Its findings cast doubt on whether we really know how any legal standard functions.

Analysis And Finite-Element Approximation Of Optimal-Control Problems For The Stationary Navier-Stokes Equations With Distributed And Neumann Controls, Max D. Gunzburger, L. Hou, Tom Svobodny Jul 1991

Analysis And Finite-Element Approximation Of Optimal-Control Problems For The Stationary Navier-Stokes Equations With Distributed And Neumann Controls, Max D. Gunzburger, L. Hou, Tom Svobodny

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications

We examine certain analytic and numerical aspects of optimal control problems for the stationary Navier-Stokes equations. The controls considered may be of either the distributed or Neumann type; the functionals minimized are either the viscous dissipation or the L4-distance of candidate flows to some desired flow. We show the existence of optimal solutions and justify the use of Lagrange multiplier techniques to derive a system of partial differential equations from which optimal solutions may be deduced. We study the regularity of solutions of this system. Then, we consider the approximation, by finite element methods, of solutions of the …

Estimation In A Marked Poisson Error Recapture Model Of Software Reliability, Rajan Gupta Jan 1991

Estimation In A Marked Poisson Error Recapture Model Of Software Reliability, Rajan Gupta

Mathematics & Statistics Theses & Dissertations

Nayak's (1988) model for the detection, removal, and recapture of the errors in a computer program is extended to a larger family of models in which the probabilities that the successive programs produce errors are described by the tail probabilities of discrete distribution on the positive integers. Confidence limits are derived for the probability that the final program produces errors. A comparison of the asymptotic variances of parameter estimates given by the error recapture and by the repetitive-run procedure of Nagel, Scholz, and Skrivan (1982) is made to determine which of these procedures efficiently uses the test time.

Shadow Casting Phenomena At Newgrange, Frank Prendergast Jan 1991

Shadow Casting Phenomena At Newgrange, Frank Prendergast

Articles

A digital model of the Newgrange passage tomb and surrounding ring of monoliths known as the Great Circle is used to investigate sunrise shadow casting phenomena at the monument. Diurnal variation in shadow directions and lengths are analysed for their potential use in the Bronze Age to indicate the passage of seasonal time. Computer-aided simulations are developed from a photogrammetric survey to accurately show how three of the largest monoliths, located closest to the tomb entrance and archaeologically coded GC1, GC-1 and GC-2, cast their shadows onto the vertical face of the entrance kerbstone, coded K1. The phenomena occur at …

Analysis And Finite Element Approximation Of Optimal Control Problems For The Stationary Navier-Stokes Equations With Dirichlet Controls, M. D. Gunzburger, L. S. Hou, Tom Svobodny Jan 1991

Analysis And Finite Element Approximation Of Optimal Control Problems For The Stationary Navier-Stokes Equations With Dirichlet Controls, M. D. Gunzburger, L. S. Hou, Tom Svobodny

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications

Optimal control problems for the stationary Navier-Stokes equations are examined from analytical and numerical points of view. The controls considered are of Dirichlet type, that is, control is effected through the velocity field on (or the mass flux through) the boundary; the functionals minimized are either the viscous dissipation or the L4-distance of candidate flows to some desired flow. We show that optimal solutions exist and justify the use of Lagrange multiplier techniques to derive a system of partial differential equations from which optimal solutions may be deduced. We study the regularity of solutions of this system. The n, finite …

The Relationship Between Plaintiff Sucess Rates Before Trial And At Trial, Theodore Eisenberg Jan 1991

The Relationship Between Plaintiff Sucess Rates Before Trial And At Trial, Theodore Eisenberg

Cornell Law Faculty Publications

Legal cases that reach trial are a biased subset of underlying disputes. This makes it difficult to study the legal system by observing tried cases. This paper examines the relationship between plaintiff success at pretrial motion and trial stages across many categories of cases. The large, significant positive relationship between plaintiff success rates at these two procedural stages suggests that characteristics of case categories influence outcomes at both stages. Observers of a category of tried cases or cases resolved by motion can make informed judgments about how that category of cases fares at the other procedural stage.

The Quiet Revolution In Products Liability, James A. Henderson Jr., Theodore Eisenberg Jan 1991

The Quiet Revolution In Products Liability, James A. Henderson Jr., Theodore Eisenberg

Cornell Law Faculty Publications

Most revolutions are noisy, tumultuous affairs. This is as true of significant shifts in legal doctrine as it is of shifts of political power through force of arms. Indeed, the pro-plaintiff revolution in American products liability in the early 1960s will forever be associated with heroic, martial images, epitomized in Prosser's description of the assault upon, and fall of, the fortress citadel of privity. The same sort of terminology aptly could be used to describe the last five or ten years of legislative reform activity in the various states. Reacting to what many see as "crises" brought on by courts …

Implementation Of The Modified Monte Carlo Technique Using Importance Sampling On The Block Oriented System Simulator, John B. Bennett Dec 1990

Implementation Of The Modified Monte Carlo Technique Using Importance Sampling On The Block Oriented System Simulator, John B. Bennett

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this thesis was to implement the Modified Monte Carlo technique using Importance Sampling on the Block Oriented System Simulator (BOSS). Computer simulation techniques of communications systems were reviewed. Next, conventional Monte Carlo techniques and Modified Monte Carlo techniques using Importance Sampling were reviewed. Models of Binary Phase Shift Keying (BPSK) systems using both Monte Carlo techniques were implemented and simulated. Reasons for the model using Importance Sampling not working correctly are postulated. The Monte Carlo technique is a method of ensuring the an inherently infinite procedure, such as determining system bit error rate (BER), can be determined …

Berry-Esseen-Type Bounds For Signed Linear Rank Statistics With A Broad Range Of Scores, Munsup Seoh Sep 1990

Berry-Esseen-Type Bounds For Signed Linear Rank Statistics With A Broad Range Of Scores, Munsup Seoh

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications

The Berry-Esseen-type bounds of order N−1/2 for the rate of convergence to normality are derived for the signed linear rank statistics under the hypothesis of symmetry. The results are obtained with a broad range of regression constants and scores (allowed to be generated by discontinuous score generating functions, but not necessarily) restricted by only mild conditions, while almost all previous results are obtained with continuously differentiable score generating functions. Furthermore, the proof is very short and elementary, based on the conditioning argument.

Testing The Selection Effect: A New Theoretical Framework With Empirical Tests, Theodore Eisenberg Jun 1990

Testing The Selection Effect: A New Theoretical Framework With Empirical Tests, Theodore Eisenberg

Cornell Law Faculty Publications

Recent law and economics scholarship has produced much theoretical and empirical work on how and why legal disputes are settled and litigated. One of the most significant developments in this literature, attributable to the work of William Baxter and the combined efforts of George Priest and Benjamin Klein, has been the formation of a theory about both the selection of disputes for trial and the rates of success that plaintiffs enjoy for those cases that are resolved at trial. The basic theory contains two components. The selection effect refers to the proposition that the selection of tried cases is not …

Bimodules Over Cartan Subalgebras, Richard Mercer Apr 1990

Bimodules Over Cartan Subalgebras, Richard Mercer

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications

Given a Cartan subalgebra A of a non Neumann algebra M, the techniques of Feldman and Moore are used to analyze the partial isometries v in M such that v* Av is contained in A. Orthonormal bases for M consisting of such partial isometries are discussed, and convergence of the resulting generalized fourier series is shown to take place in the Bures A-topology. The Bures A-topology is shown to be equivalent to the strong topology on the unit ball of M. These ideas are applied to A-bimodules and to give a simplified and intuitive proof of the Spectral Theorem …

On The Equivalence Of The Operator Equations Xa + Bx = C And X - P(-B)Xp(A)(-1) = W In A Hilbert-Space, P A Polynomial, Tapas Mazumdar, David Miller Apr 1990

On The Equivalence Of The Operator Equations Xa + Bx = C And X - P(-B)Xp(A)(-1) = W In A Hilbert-Space, P A Polynomial, Tapas Mazumdar, David Miller

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications

We consider the solution of (*) XA+BX = C for bounded operators A,B,C and X on a Hilbert space, A normal. We establish the existence of a polynomial p and a bounded operator W with the property that the unique solution X of (*) also solves X − p(−B)Xp(A)−1 = W uniquely. A known iterative algorithm can be applied to the latter equation to solve (*).

The Truncated Cauchy Distribution: Estimation Of Parameters And Application To Stock Returns, Paul G. Staneski Apr 1990

The Truncated Cauchy Distribution: Estimation Of Parameters And Application To Stock Returns, Paul G. Staneski

Mathematics & Statistics Theses & Dissertations

The problem addressed in this dissertation is the existence and estimation of the parameters of a truncated Cauchy distribution. It is known that when a number of distributions with infinite support are truncated to a finite interval that the maximum likelihood estimator of the scale parameter fails to exist with positive probability. In particular, necessary and sufficient conditions which give rise to instances of non-existence have been found for the exponential (Deemer and Votaw (1955)), gamma (Broeder (1955), Hegde and Dahiya (1989)), Weibull (Mittal and Dahiya (1989)) and normal distribution (Barndorff-Nielsen (1978), Mittal and Dahiya (1987), Hegde and Dahiya (1989)). …

The pro-plaintiff revolution in products liability in the early 1960s will forever be associated with heroic, martial images, epitomized in Prosser's description of the assault upon, and fall of, the fortressed citadel of privity. In contrast to these noisy, exuberant events, the revolution to which we refer has gone all but unnoticed. In fact, some followers of the products liability wars will find our hypothesis so contrary to currently shared wisdom as …

Spatial Critical Points Of Solutions Of A One-Dimensional Nonlinear Parabolic Problem, Larry Turyn Aug 1989

Spatial Critical Points Of Solutions Of A One-Dimensional Nonlinear Parabolic Problem, Larry Turyn

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications

The number of spatial critical points is nonincreasing in time, for positive, analytic solutions of a scalar, nonlinear, parabolic partial differential equation in one space dimension. While proving this, we answer the question: What happens to a critical point which loses simplicity?

Software Reliability Models, Syed Afzal Hossain Jul 1989

Software Reliability Models, Syed Afzal Hossain

Mathematics & Statistics Theses & Dissertations

The problem considered here is the building of Non-homogeneous Poisson Process (NHPP) model. Currently existing popular NHPP process models like Goel-Okumoto (G-O) and Yamada et al models suffer from the drawback that the probability density function of the inter-failure times is an improper density function. This is because the event no failure in (0, oo] is allowed in these models. In real life situations we cannot draw sample(s) from such a population and also none of the moments of inter-failure times exist. Therefore, these models are unsuitable for modelling real software error data. On the other hand if the density …

Responses To Corporate Versus Individual Wrongdoing, Valerie P. Hans, M. David Ermann Jun 1989

Responses To Corporate Versus Individual Wrongdoing, Valerie P. Hans, M. David Ermann

Cornell Law Faculty Publications

For many years, researchers assumed that the public was indifferent to corporate wrongdoing, but recent surveys have discovered evidence to the contrary. Taking insights from these data a step further, this study employed an experimental design to examine whether people responded differently to corporate versus individual wrongdoers. We varied the identity of the central actor in a scenario involving harm to workers. Half the respondents were informed that a corporation caused the harm; the remainder were told that an individual did so. Respondents applied a higher standard of responsibility to the corporate actor. For identical actions, the corporation was judged …

Probability Of Discrete Failures, Weibull Distribution, Mary Jo Hansen May 1989

Probability Of Discrete Failures, Weibull Distribution, Mary Jo Hansen

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The intent of this research and these is to describe the development of a series of charts and tables that provide the individual and cumulative probabilities of failure applying to the Weibull statistical distribution. The mathematical relationships are developed and the computer programs are described for deterministic and Monte Carlo models that compute and verify the results. Charts and tables reflecting the probabilities of failure for a selected set of parameters of the Weibull distribution functions are provided.

Optimal Row-Column Designs For Correlated Errors And Nested Row-Column Designs For Uncorrelated Errors, Nizam Uddin Apr 1989

Optimal Row-Column Designs For Correlated Errors And Nested Row-Column Designs For Uncorrelated Errors, Nizam Uddin

Mathematics & Statistics Theses & Dissertations

In this dissertation the design problems are considered in the row-column setting for second order autonormal errors when the treatment effects are estimated by generalized least squares, and in the nested row-column setting for uncorrelated errors when the treatment effects are estimated by ordinary least squares. In the former case, universal optimality conditions are derived separately for designs in the plane and on the torus using more general linear models than those considered elsewhere in the literature. Examples of universally optimum planar designs are given, and a method is developed for the construction of optimum and near optimum designs, that …

Spectral Measures, Orthogonal Polynomials, And Absolute Continuity, Joanne Dombrowski

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications

This paper studies the spectral measure of an unbounded tridiagonal matrix operator for which the matrix entries satisfy a certain growth condition, and presents a sufficient condition for the existence of an absolutely continuous part. The results are related to a class of orthogonal polynomials with exponential weights.

Overall Life Satisfaction Of Ileostomates: Conventional Brooke Ileostomy Versus Modified Kock Pouch, Sandra Sisson Briscoe May 1988

Overall Life Satisfaction Of Ileostomates: Conventional Brooke Ileostomy Versus Modified Kock Pouch, Sandra Sisson Briscoe

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The purpose of this thesis is to analyze various aspects of quality of life and to determine if there is a difference in quality of life offered by a conventional ileostomy versus a continent ileostomy.

An instrument was developed to measure several factors thought to influence quality of life as well as several structural/demographic variables. This instrument was designed for persons with a conventional ileostomy and was modified for persons who had undergone conversion surgery from conventional to continent ileostomy.

Analysis of variance was performed to determine differences in quality of life for persons with a conventional, conversion, or original …

Comparison Of Bootstrap With Other Tests For Several Distributions, Yu-Yu Wong May 1988

Comparison Of Bootstrap With Other Tests For Several Distributions, Yu-Yu Wong

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

This paper discusses results of a computer simulation to investigate several different tests when sampling several distributions. The hypothesis H0: μ=0 was tested against H0: μ≠0, using the usual t-test, trimmed t-test, the Jackkinfe, the Bootstrap and signed-rank test. The p-values and empirical power show that the Bootstrap is as good as the t-test. The Jackknife procedure is too liberal, always obtaining small p-values. The signed-rank is a fairly good test if the data follows the Cauchy Distribution.

Parameter Estimation For Generalized Pareto Distribution, Der-Chen Lin May 1988

Parameter Estimation For Generalized Pareto Distribution, Der-Chen Lin

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The generalized Pareto distribution was introduced by Pickands (1975). Three methods of estimating the parameters of the generalized Pareto distribution were compared by Hosking and Wallis (1987). The methods are maximum likelihood, method of moments and probability-weighted moments.

An alternate method of estimation for the generalized Pareto distribution, based on least square regression of expected order statistics (REOS), is developed and evaluated in this thesis. A Monte Carlo comparison is made between this method and the estimating methods considered by Hosking and Wallis (1987). This method is shown to be generally superior to the maximum likelihood, method of moments and …
