Jmasm43: Teereg: Trimmed Elemental Estimation (R), Wei Jiang, Matthew S. Mayo

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

Trimmed elemental regression is robust to outliers and violations of model assumptions. Its properties and statistical inference were evaluated using bias-corrected and accelerated bootstrap confidence intervals. An R package named TEEReg is developed to compute the trimmed elemental estimates and the corresponding bootstrap confidence intervals. Two examples are provided to demonstrate its usage.

Outlier Impact And Accommodation On Power, Hongjing Liao, Yanju Li, Gordon P. Brooks May 2017

Outlier Impact And Accommodation On Power, Hongjing Liao, Yanju Li, Gordon P. Brooks

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

The outliers’ influence on power rates in ANOVA and Welch tests at various conditions was examined and compared with the effectiveness of nonparametric methods and Winsorizing in minimizing the impact of outliers. Results showed that, considering both power and Type I error, a nonparametric test is the safest choice to control the inflation of Type I error with a decent sample size and yield relatively high power.

Jmasm44: Implementing Multiple Ratio Imputation By The Emb Algorithm (R), Masayoshi Takahashi May 2017

Jmasm44: Implementing Multiple Ratio Imputation By The Emb Algorithm (R), Masayoshi Takahashi

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

Although single ratio imputation is often used to deal with missing values in practice, there is a paucity of discussion regarding multiple ratio imputation. Code in the R statistical environment is presented to execute multiple ratio imputation by the Expectation-Maximization with Bootstrapping (EMB) algorithm.

Assessing The Relationship Between Change Blindness And The Anchoring Effect, Melissa Schoenlein May 2017

Assessing The Relationship Between Change Blindness And The Anchoring Effect, Melissa Schoenlein

Honors Projects

A lack of consideration for all aspects of a question prompts fragmented decision making. These decisions, as they leave out fundamental information, repeatedly then lead to a potentially problematic reaction to the target question or stimuli. The anchoring heuristic propels one to make a decision, usually an estimate, based on a presented “fact”, often ignoring additional background and environmental clues. Reducing the rate of occurrence of the anchoring bias is thought to lead to an increase in holistic decision making. To promote this reduction, the purpose of this research was to affirmexamine the relationship between the susceptibility to change blindness …

Performance Of Imputation Algorithms On Artificially Produced Missing At Random Data, Tobias O. Oketch May 2017

Performance Of Imputation Algorithms On Artificially Produced Missing At Random Data, Tobias O. Oketch

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Missing data is one of the challenges we are facing today in modeling valid statistical models. It reduces the representativeness of the data samples. Hence, population estimates, and model parameters estimated from such data are likely to be biased.

However, the missing data problem is an area under study, and alternative better statistical procedures have been presented to mitigate its shortcomings. In this paper, we review causes of missing data, and various methods of handling missing data. Our main focus is evaluating various multiple imputation (MI) methods from the multiple imputation of chained equation (MICE) package in the statistical software …

Denoising Tandem Mass Spectrometry Data, Felix Offei May 2017

Denoising Tandem Mass Spectrometry Data, Felix Offei

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Protein identification using tandem mass spectrometry (MS/MS) has proven to be an effective way to identify proteins in a biological sample. An observed spectrum is constructed from the data produced by the tandem mass spectrometer. A protein can be identified if the observed spectrum aligns with the theoretical spectrum. However, data generated by the tandem mass spectrometer are affected by errors thus making protein identification challenging in the field of proteomics. Some of these errors include wrong calibration of the instrument, instrument distortion and noise. In this thesis, we present a pre-processing method, which focuses on the removal of noisy …

A Comparison Of Statistical Methods Relating Pairwise Distance To A Binary Subject-Level Covariate, Rachael Stone May 2017

A Comparison Of Statistical Methods Relating Pairwise Distance To A Binary Subject-Level Covariate, Rachael Stone

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

A community ecologist provided a motivating data set involving a certain animal species with two behavior groups, along with a pairwise genetic distance matrix among individuals. Many community ecologists have analyzed similar data sets with a method known as the Hopkins method, testing for an association between the subject-level covariate (behavior group) and the pairwise distance. This community ecologist wanted to know if they used the Hopkins method, would their results be meaningful? Their question inspired this thesis work, where a different data set was used for confidentiality reasons. Multiple methods (Hopkins method, ADONIS, ANOSIM, and Distance Regression) were used …

An Empirical Look At The Controversy Surrounding The Nobel Prize For Magnetic Resonance Imaging, Anthony Breitzman Apr 2017

An Empirical Look At The Controversy Surrounding The Nobel Prize For Magnetic Resonance Imaging, Anthony Breitzman

College of Science & Mathematics Departmental Research

Disputes between researchers over who deserves credit for technological breakthroughs are not unusual. Few such disputes, however, have attracted as much attention as the arguments surrounding the award of the 2003 Nobel Prize for Medicine. This prize was awarded to Paul Lauterbur and Peter Mansfield to honor “discoveries concerning the development of magnetic resonance imaging” – i.e. MRI. Soon after the award, another scientist, Raymond Damadian, took out full-page advertisements in national newspapers, decrying the award and stating that he should have been included alongside Lauterbur and Mansfield. This technical report examines Damadian’s claim from a strictly empirical perspective, by …

Network Exploration Of Correlated Multivariate Protein Data For Alzheimer's Disease Association, Matthew J. Lane Apr 2017

Network Exploration Of Correlated Multivariate Protein Data For Alzheimer's Disease Association, Matthew J. Lane

Theses

Alzheimer Disease (AD) is difficult to diagnose by using genetic testing or other traditional methods. Unlike diseases with simple genetic risk components, there exists no single marker determining as to whether someone will develop AD. Furthermore, AD is highly heterogeneous and different subgroups of individuals develop the disease due to differing factors. Traditional diagnostic methods using perceivable cognitive deficiencies are often too little too late due to the brain having suffered damage from decades of disease progression. In order to observe AD at early stages prior to the observation of cognitive deficiencies, biomarkers with greater accuracy are required. By using …

Poisson Windowing, David L. Farnsworth Apr 2017

Poisson Windowing, David L. Farnsworth

Articles

The statistical quality-control technique of windowing takes advantage of the additive property of the Poisson probability distribution and the geometry of the data. There are abundant applications of windowing to observations that naturally occur in arrays or that are produced in them, such as computer chips, which are manufactured many at a time on wafers. Standard statistical procedures are used.

Statistically Analyzing Assembly Line Processing Times Through Incorporation Of Product Variation, Kyle Rehr, Matthew Farr Mar 2017

Statistically Analyzing Assembly Line Processing Times Through Incorporation Of Product Variation, Kyle Rehr, Matthew Farr

Scholars Week

Timing methods and performance metrics are important in the heavily industrialized world we live in. Industrial plants use metrics to measure quality of production, help make decisions, and drive the strategy of the organization. However, there are many factors to be considered when measuring performance based on a metric; of which we will be analyzing the importance of product variation. We will be analyzing assembly line timings, whilst controlling for product variance, to show the importance differences between products makes in one’s ability to predict performance. In addition, we will be analyzing the current “statistical” methods used by an industrial …

Differences In Hemodynamics And Rupture Rate Of Aneurysms At The Bifurcation Of The Basilar And Internal Carotid Arteries, Ravi Doddasomayajula, Bong Jae Chung, Farid Hamzei-Sichani, Christopher M. Putman, Juan Cebral

Department of Applied Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Cerebral aneurysms in the posterior circulation are known to have a higher rupture risk than those in the anterior circulation. We sought to test the hypothesis that differences in hemodynamics can explain the difference in rupture rates.

MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 117 aneurysms, 63 at the tip of the basilar artery (27 ruptured, 36 unruptured, rupture rate = 43%) and 54 at the bifurcation of the internal carotid artery (11 ruptured, 43 unruptured, rupture rate = 20%) were analyzed with image-based computational fluid dynamics. Several hemodynamic variables were compared among aneurysms at each location and …

This retrospective study shows that the majority of patients’ correlations between PSA and Testosterone during the on-treatment period is at least 0.90. Model-based duration calculations to control PSA levels during off-treatment are provided. There are two pairs of models. In one pair, the Generalized Linear Model and Mixed Model are both used to analyze the variability of PSA at the individual patient level by using the variable “Patient ID” as a repeated measure. In the second pair, Patient ID is not used as a repeated measure but additional baseline variables are included to analyze the variability of PSA.

In this article a review is provided of the multiple-sample continuous-data testing methods. It includes traditional methods, such as the two-sample t-test, Welch ANOVA test, etc., as well as newly-developed ones, such as the various Multiple Comparison Procedure (MCP). A roadmap is provided in a figure or diagram format as to which methods are available in the literature. Additionally, the implementation of these methods in popular statistical software packages such as SAS is also presented. This review will be helpful to determine which continuous-data testing …

Factor Analysis By Limited Scales: Which Factors To Analyze?, Stan Lipovetsky Jan 2017

Factor Analysis By Limited Scales: Which Factors To Analyze?, Stan Lipovetsky

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

Factor Analysis (FA) and Principal Component Analysis (PCA) are well-known main tools of the multivariate statistics for data analysis, reduction, and visualization. Commonly, the analysis and interpretation of their solutions is performed for each of several main eigenvectors with variances explaining a big part of the total variability in data. The recommendation is to determine if all the main vectors are really needed in the analysis, or some of them should be skipped if they correspond to the absence of the analyzing features. A simple criterion for identifying redundant vectors of loadings is their negative correlation with the vector of …

Prediction Of Percent Change In Linear Regression By Correlated Variables, Stan Lipovetsky Jan 2017

Prediction Of Percent Change In Linear Regression By Correlated Variables, Stan Lipovetsky

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

Multiple linear regression can be applied for predicting an individual value of dependent variable y by the given values of independent variables x. But it is not immediately clear how to estimate percent change in y due to changes in predictors, especially when those are correlated. This work considers several approaches to this problem, including its formulation via predictors adjusted by their correlation structure. Ordinary least squares regression is used, together with Shapley value regression and another model based on solving some system of differential equations. Numerical estimations performed for a real marketing research data demonstrate meaningful results. The considered …

Quantum Foundations With Astronomical Photons, Calvin Leung Jan 2017

Quantum Foundations With Astronomical Photons, Calvin Leung

HMC Senior Theses

Bell's inequalities impose an upper limit on correlations between measurements of two-photon states under the assumption that the photons play by a set of local rules rather than by quantum mechanics. Quantum theory and decades of experiments both violate this limit.

Recent theoretical work in quantum foundations has demonstrated that a local realist model can explain the non-local correlations observed in experimental tests of Bell's inequality if the underlying probability distribution of the local hidden variable depends on the choice of measurement basis, or ``setting choice''. By using setting choices determined by astrophysical events in the distant past, it is …

Meta-Analyses Of The Relationship Between Depression And Nine Dimensions Of Perfectionism, Gabriel Lynn Hottinger Jan 2017

Meta-Analyses Of The Relationship Between Depression And Nine Dimensions Of Perfectionism, Gabriel Lynn Hottinger

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Perfectionism has been shown to be related to depression, but perfectionism is multidimensional. Some dimensions are related to positive psychological characteristics and outcomes and other dimensions are related to negative psychological characteristics and outcomes. This study reports results of nine meta-analyses performed to investigate the association between each of nine subscales of perfectionism and depression to determine which dimensions of perfectionism are most strongly associated with depression. The two subscales that were used from the Hewitt and Flett (1991b) Multidimensional Perfectionism scale were Self-Oriented Perfectionism (SOP) and Socially-Prescribed Perfectionism (SPP). The five subscales that were used from the Frost et …

The Document Similarity Network: A Novel Technique For Visualizing Relationships In Text Corpora, Dylan Baker Jan 2017

The Document Similarity Network: A Novel Technique For Visualizing Relationships In Text Corpora, Dylan Baker

HMC Senior Theses

With the abundance of written information available online, it is useful to be able to automatically synthesize and extract meaningful information from text corpora. We present a unique method for visualizing relationships between documents in a text corpus. By using Latent Dirichlet Allocation to extract topics from the corpus, we create a graph whose nodes represent individual documents and whose edge weights indicate the distance between topic distributions in documents. These edge lengths are then scaled using multidimensional scaling techniques, such that more similar documents are clustered together. Applying this method to several datasets, we demonstrate that these graphs are …

Machine Learning On Statistical Manifold, Bo Zhang Jan 2017

Machine Learning On Statistical Manifold, Bo Zhang

HMC Senior Theses

This senior thesis project explores and generalizes some fundamental machine learning algorithms from the Euclidean space to the statistical manifold, an abstract space in which each point is a probability distribution. In this thesis, we adapt the optimal separating hyperplane, the k-means clustering method, and the hierarchical clustering method for classifying and clustering probability distributions. In these modifications, we use the statistical distances as a measure of the dissimilarity between objects. We describe a situation where the clustering of probability distributions is needed and useful. We present many interesting and promising empirical clustering results, which demonstrate the statistical-distance-based clustering algorithms …

What’S Brewing? A Statistics Education Discovery Project, Marla A. Sole, Sharon L. Weinberg

Publications and Research

We believe that students learn best, are actively engaged, and are genuinely interested when working on real-world problems. This can be done by giving students the opportunity to work collaboratively on projects that investigate authentic, familiar problems. This article shares one such project that was used in an introductory statistics course. We describe the steps taken to investigate why customers are charged more for iced coffee than hot coffee, which included collecting data and using descriptive and inferential statistical analysis. Interspersed throughout the article, we describe strategies that can help teachers implement the project and scaffold material to assist students …
