A General Quantum Mechanical Method To Predict Positron Spectroscopy, Paul E. Adamson
A General Quantum Mechanical Method To Predict Positron Spectroscopy, Paul E. Adamson
Theses and Dissertations
The nuclear-electronic orbital (NEO) method was modified and extended to positron systems. NEO - second-order Moeller-Plesset perturbation (MP2) energies and annihilation rates were calculated for the positronium hydride (PsH) system, and the effects of basis set size on correlation energies captured with the NEO-MP2 and NEO-full configuration interaction (FCI) methods are compared and discussed. Equilibrium geometries and vibrational energy levels were computed for the LiX and e+LiX (X = H, F, Cl) systems at the MP2 and NEO-MP2 levels. It was found that anharmonicity plays a significant role, specifically in the differences between the vibrational energy levels of …

The Development Of A Quantum Dot Solar Concentrator, Brenda Rowan
Doctoral
The aim of this study was to investigate the feasibility of Quantum Dot Solar Concentrators (QDSCs). Quantum Dots offer the advantages of having broad absorption specr4a, tunable emission and improved stability. A range of Cadmium Selenide/|Zince Sulphide Quantum Dots were characterized in solution and composite form using time-resolved and steady state spectroscopie techniques and the stability of the composite samples was investigated over a 6 month period. A number of matrix materials were compared and the most suitable type for fabrication of QDSCs were identified. Techniques for fabrication and characterization of QDSCs were developed and a range of different QDSC …
Quantum Analysis Of A Linear Dc Squid Mechanical Displacement Detector, M. P. Blencowe, E. Buks
Quantum Analysis Of A Linear Dc Squid Mechanical Displacement Detector, M. P. Blencowe, E. Buks
Dartmouth Scholarship
We provide a quantum analysis of a dc SQUID mechanical displacement detector within the subcritical Josephson current regime. A segment of the SQUID loop forms the mechanical resonator and motion of the latter is transduced inductively through changes in the flux threading the loop. Expressions are derived for the detector signal response and noise, which are used to evaluate the position and force detection sensitivity. We also investigate cooling of the mechanical resonator due to detector back reaction.

Dynamical Control Of Electron Spin Coherence In A Quantum Dot: A Theoretical Study, Wenxian Zhang, V. V. Dobrovitski, Lea F. Santos, Lorenza Viola, B. N. Harmon

We investigate the performance of dynamical decoupling methods at suppressing electron spin decoherence from a low-temperature nuclear spin reservoir in a quantum dot. The controlled dynamics is studied through exact numerical simulation, with emphasis on realistic pulse delays and the long-time limit. Our results show that optimal performance for this system is attained by a periodic protocol exploiting concatenated design, with control rates substantially slower than expected from the upper spectral cutoff of the bath. For a known initial electron spin state, coherence can saturate at long times, signaling the creation of a stable “spin-locked” decoherence-free subspace. Analytical insight into …
Generalized Coherent States As Preferred States Of Open Quantum Systems, S Boixo, L Viola, G Ortiz
Generalized Coherent States As Preferred States Of Open Quantum Systems, S Boixo, L Viola, G Ortiz
Dartmouth Scholarship
We investigate the connection between quasi-classical (pointer) states and generalized coherent states (GCSs) within an algebraic approach to Markovian quantum systems (including bosons, spins, and fermions). We establish conditions for the GCS set to become most robust by relating the rate of purity loss to an invariant measure of uncertainty derived from quantum Fisher information. We find that, for damped bosonic modes, the stability of canonical coherent states is confirmed in a variety of scenarios, while for systems described by (compact) Lie algebras, stringent symmetry constraints must be obeyed for the GCS set to be preferred. The relationship …

Large-Alphabet Quantum Key Distribution Using Energy-Time Entangled Bipartite States, Irfan Ali-Khan, Curtis J. Broadbent, John C. Howell
Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research
We present a protocol for large-alphabet quantum key distribution (QKD) using energy-time entangled biphotons. Binned, high-resolution timing measurements are used to generate a large-alphabet key with over 10 bits of information per photon pair, albeit with large noise. QKD with 5% bit error rate is demonstrated with 4 bits of information per photon pair, where the security of the quantum channel is determined by the visibility of Franson interference fringes. The protocol is easily generalizable to even larger alphabets, and utilizes energy-time entanglement which is robust to transmission over large distances in fiber.
Rank-Ordering Protein-Ligand Binding Affinity By A Quantum Mechanics/ Molecular Mechanics/Poisson-Boltzmann-Surface Area Model, Mingliang Wang, Chung Wong
Rank-Ordering Protein-Ligand Binding Affinity By A Quantum Mechanics/ Molecular Mechanics/Poisson-Boltzmann-Surface Area Model, Mingliang Wang, Chung Wong
Chemistry & Biochemistry Faculty Works
The authors describe a quantum mechanics/molecular mechanics/Poisson-Boltzmann-surface area model for rank-ordering protein-ligand binding affinity in aqueous solution. Unlike many classical continuum electrostatics calculations in which the protein and ligand are treated as a uniform dielectric, this model uses quantum mechanics to explicitly describe the electronic polarization of the ligand by its environment. In solving the Poisson-Boltzmann equation, the authors use the quantum mechanical charge density directly rather than the common point-charge approximation. The authors show that useful results can be obtained by using experimental structure, by choosing a protein dielectric constant that is smaller than that typically used in classical …
A Macroscopic Test Of The Aharonov-Bohm Effect, Adam Caprez, Brett E. Barwick, Herman Batelaan
A Macroscopic Test Of The Aharonov-Bohm Effect, Adam Caprez, Brett E. Barwick, Herman Batelaan
Department of Physics and Astronomy: Faculty Publications
The Aharonov-Bohm (AB) effect is a purely quantum mechanical effect. The original (classified as Type-I) AB-phase shift exists in experimental conditions where the electromagnetic fields and forces are zero. It is the absence of forces that makes the ABeffect entirely quantum mechanical. Although the AB-phase shift has been demonstrated unambiguously, the absence of forces in Type-I AB-effects has never been shown. Here, we report the observation of the absence of time delays associated with forces of the magnitude needed to explain the AB-phase shift for a macroscopic system.

Phase Diagram Of The One-Dimensional Hubbard-Holstein Model At Half And Quarter Filling, Rahul Hardikar, R. T. Clay
Phase Diagram Of The One-Dimensional Hubbard-Holstein Model At Half And Quarter Filling, Rahul Hardikar, R. T. Clay
Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS
The Hubbard-Holstein model is one of the simplest to incorporate both electron-electron and electron-phonon interactions. In one dimension at half filling, the Holstein electron-phonon coupling promotes on-site pairs of electrons and a Peierls charge-density wave, while the Hubbard on-site Coulomb repulsion U promotes antiferromagnetic correlations and a Mott insulating state. Recent numerical studies have found a possible third intermediate phase between Peierls and Mott states. From direct calculations of charge and spin susceptibilities, we show that (i) as the electron-phonon coupling is increased, first a spin gap opens, followed by the Peierls transition. Between these two transitions, the metallic intermediate …

Electron Trapping In A One-Dimensional Semiconductor Quantum Wire With Multiple Impurities, S. Tanaka, S. Garmon, Gonzalo Ordonez, T. Petrosky
Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS
We demonstrate the trapping of a conduction electron between two identical adatom impurities in a one-dimensional semiconductor quantum-dot array system (quantum wire). Bound steady states arise even when the energy of the adatom impurity is located in the continuous one-dimensional energy miniband. The steady state is a realization of the bound state in continuum (BIC) phenomenon first proposed by von Neuman and Wigner [Phys. Z. 30, 465 (1929)]. We analytically solve the dispersion equation for this localized state, which enables us to reveal the mechanism of the BIC. The appearance of the BIC state is attributed to the quantum …

The motion of a single vortex originates chaos in the quantum fluid defined in Bohm's interpretation of quantum mechanics. Here we analize this situation in a very simple case: one single vortex in a rectangular billiard.

Photoproduction of the cascade resonances has been investigated in the reactions γp → K + K +(X) and γp → K + K + π −(X). The mass splitting of the ground state (Ξ−,Ξ0) doublet is measured to be 5.4 ± 1.8 MeV/c2, consistent with existing measurements. The differential (total) cross sections for the Ξ− have been determined for photon beam energies from 2.75 to 3.85 (4.75) GeV and are consistent with a production mechanism of Y∗→K+Ξ− through a t-channel process. The reaction γp→K+K+π−[Ξ0] has also been investigated to …

Differential cross sections for the reaction 𝛾p→ K*0Σ+ are presented in the photon energy range of 1.7 to 3.0 GeV. The K*0 was detected by its decay products, K+π−, in the Continuous Electron Beam Accelerator Facility's large acceptance spectrometer (CLAS) detector at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility. These data are the first K*0 photoproduction cross sections ever published over a broad range of angles. Comparison with a theoretical model based on the vector and tensor K∗-quark couplings shows good agreement with the data, except at forward angles, suggesting that …

Spin transfer from circularly polarized real photons to recoiling hyperons has been measured for the reactions →γ + p → K+ + →Λ and →γ+p → K+ + →Σ0. The data were obtained using the CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer (CLAS) detector at the Jefferson Lab for center-of-mass energies W between 1.6 and 2.53 GeV, and for -0.85 < cos θc.m.K+ < +0.95. For the Λ, the polarization transfer coefficient along the photon momentum axis, Cz, was found to be near unity for a wide range of energy and kaon production angles. The associated transverse polarization coefficient Cx is smaller than Cz by a roughly …

The cross section and decay angular distributions for the coherent ɸ-meson photoproduction on the deuteron have been measured for the first time up to a squared four-momentum transfer t = (pᵧ - pɸ)2 =-2 GeV2/c2, using the CLAS detector at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility. The cross sections are compared with predictions from a rescattering model. In a framework of vector meson dominance, the data are consistent with the total ɸ-N cross section σɸN at about 10 mb. If vector meson dominance is violated, a larger σɸN is possible by introducing a …
Quark Contribution To The Small-𝔁 Evolution Of Color Dipole, Ian Balitsky
Quark Contribution To The Small-𝔁 Evolution Of Color Dipole, Ian Balitsky
Physics Faculty Publications
The small-𝔁 deep inelastic scattering in the saturation region is governed by the nonlinear evolution of Wilson-lines operators. In the leading logarithmic approximation it is given by the Balitsky-Kovchegov (BK) equation for the evolution of color dipoles. In the next-to-leading order (NLO) the nonlinear equation gets contributions from quark and gluon loops. In this paper I calculate the quark-loop contribution to small-𝔁 evolution of Wilson lines in the NLO. It turns out that there are no new operators at the one-loop level—just as at the tree level, the high-energy scattering can be described in terms of Wilson lines. In addition, …
Generalized No-Broadcasting Theorem, Howard Barnum, Jonathan Barrett, Matthew S. Leifer, Alex Wilce
Generalized No-Broadcasting Theorem, Howard Barnum, Jonathan Barrett, Matthew S. Leifer, Alex Wilce
Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research
We prove a generalized version of the no-broadcasting theorem, applicable to essentially any nonclassical finite-dimensional probabilistic model satisfying a no-signaling criterion, including ones with ‘‘superquantum’’ correlations. A strengthened version of the quantum no-broadcasting theorem follows, and its proof is significantly simpler than existing proofs of the no-broadcasting theorem.
Decoherence And Recoherence In A Vibrating Rf Squid, Eyal Buks, M. P. Blencowe
Decoherence And Recoherence In A Vibrating Rf Squid, Eyal Buks, M. P. Blencowe
Dartmouth Scholarship
We study an rf SQUID, in which a section of the loop is a freely suspended beam that is allowed to oscillate mechanically. The coupling between the rf SQUID and the mechanical resonator originates from the dependence of the total magnetic flux threading the loop on the displacement of the resonator. Motion of the latter affects the visibility of Rabi oscillations between the two lowest energy states of the rf SQUID. We address the feasibility of experimental observation of decoherence and recoherence, namely decay and rise of the visibility, in such a system.
Casimir Forces And Non-Newtonian Gravitation, Roberto Onofrio
Casimir Forces And Non-Newtonian Gravitation, Roberto Onofrio
Dartmouth Scholarship
The search for non-relativistic deviations from Newtonian gravitation can lead to new phenomena signalling the unification of gravity with the other fundamental interactions. Various recent theoretical frameworks indicate a possible window for non-Newtonian forces with gravitational coupling strength in the micrometre range. The major expected background in the same range is attributable to the Casimir force or variants of it if dielectric materials, rather than conducting ones, are considered. Here we review the measurements of the Casimir force performed so far in the micrometre range and how they determine constraints on non-Newtonian gravitation, also discussing the dominant sources of false …
Generalized Entanglement As A Natural Framework For Exploring Quantum Chaos, Y. S. Weinstein, L Viola
Generalized Entanglement As A Natural Framework For Exploring Quantum Chaos, Y. S. Weinstein, L Viola
Dartmouth Scholarship
We demonstrate that generalized entanglement (Barnum et al., Phys. Rev. A, 68 (2003) 032308) provides a natural and reliable indicator of quantum chaotic behavior. Since generalized entanglement depends directly on a choice of preferred observables, exploring how generalized entanglement increases under dynamical evolution is possible without invoking an auxiliary coupled system or decomposing the system into arbitrary subsystems. We find that, in the chaotic regime, the long-time saturation value of generalized entanglement agrees with random matrix theory predictions. For our system, we provide physical intuition into generalized entanglement within a single system by invoking the notion of extent …
Enhanced Convergence And Robust Performance Of Randomized Dynamical Decoupling, Lea F. Santos, Lorenza Viola
Enhanced Convergence And Robust Performance Of Randomized Dynamical Decoupling, Lea F. Santos, Lorenza Viola
Dartmouth Scholarship
We demonstrate the advantages of randomization in coherent quantum dynamical control. For systems which are either time-varying or require decoupling cycles involving a large number of operations, we find that simple randomized protocols offer superior convergence and stability as compared to deterministic counterparts. In addition, we show how randomization may allow us to outperform purely deterministic schemes at long times, including combinatorial and concatenated methods. General criteria for optimally interpolating between deterministic and stochastic design are proposed and illustrated in explicit decoupling scenarios relevant to quantum information storage.

Exact Casimir Interaction Between Eccentric Cylinders, D. A. R. Dalvit, F. C. Lombardo, F. D. Mazzitelli, R. Onofrio
Dartmouth Scholarship
The Casimir force is the ultimate background in ongoing searches for extragravitational forces in the micrometer range. Eccentric cylinders offer favorable experimental conditions for such measurements as spurious gravitational and electrostatic effects can be minimized. Here we report on the evaluation of the exact Casimir interaction between perfectly conducting eccentric cylinders using a mode summation technique, and study different limiting cases of relevance for Casimir force measurements, with potential implications for the understanding of mechanical properties of nanotubes.
Energy Landscape Of D -Dimensional Q -Balls, Marcelo Gleiser, Joel Thorarinson
Energy Landscape Of D -Dimensional Q -Balls, Marcelo Gleiser, Joel Thorarinson
Dartmouth Scholarship
We investigate the properties of Q-balls in d spatial dimensions. First, a generalized virial relation for these objects is obtained. We then focus on potentials V(ϕϕ†)=∑3n=1an(ϕϕ†)n, where an is a constant and n is an integer, obtaining variational estimates for their energies for arbitrary charge Q. These analytical estimates are contrasted with numerical results and their accuracy evaluated. Based on the results, we offer a simple criterion to classify large and small d-dimensional Q-balls for this class of potentials. A minimum charge is then computed and its dependence on spatial dimensionality is shown to scale as Qmin∼exp(d). We also briefly …
Bound States In The Continuum In Quantum-Dot Pairs, Gonzalo Ordonez, Kyungsun Na, Sungyun Kim
Bound States In The Continuum In Quantum-Dot Pairs, Gonzalo Ordonez, Kyungsun Na, Sungyun Kim
Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS
It is shown that for two open quantum dots connected by a wire, “bound states in the continuum” of a single electron are formed at nearly periodic distances between the dots. This is due to Fabry-Pérot interference between quasibound states in each dot. The bound states are nonlocal, describing the electron trapped in both dots at the same time. Theoretical and numerical results show that trapped states exist even if the wire connecting the dots is relatively long.

High-statistics cross sections for the reactions 𝛾 + p → K⁺ + Λ and 𝛾 + p → K⁺ + Σ⁰ have been measured using CLAS at Jefferson Lab for center-of-mass energies W between 1.6 and 2.53 GeV, and for -0.85 < cos θ Kc.m. < +0.95. In the K⁺ + Λ channel we confirm a resonance-like structure near W=1.9 GeV at backward kaon angles. The position and width of this structure change with angle, indicating that more than one resonance is likely playing a role. The K⁺ + Λ channel at forward angles and all energies is well described by a t-channel scaling characteristic of Regge exchange, whereas the same scaling applied to the K⁺ + Σ⁰ channel is less successful. Several existing theoretical models are compared to the data, but none provide a good representation of the results.

If we assume that the proton was a spectator to the reaction taking place on the neutron in deuterium, the initial state of that neutron can be inferred. This method, known as spectator tagging, can be used to study electron scattering from high-momentum (off-shell) neutrons in deuterium. Differential cross sections for the reaction γp→η′p have been measured with the CLAS spectrometer and a tagged photon beam with energies from 1.527 to 2.227 GeV. The results reported here possess much greater accuracy than previous measurements. Analyses of these data suggest for the first time the coupling of the η′N channel to both the S11(1535) and P11(1710) resonances, known to couple strongly to the ηN channel in photoproduction on the proton, and the importance of J=3/2 resonances in the process.
