Influence Of Coulomb Interactions On Emission Dynamics In Semiconductor Quantum Dot Systems, Kamil Gradkowski
Influence Of Coulomb Interactions On Emission Dynamics In Semiconductor Quantum Dot Systems, Kamil Gradkowski
Theses
In this thesis the novel self-assembled quantum dots based on GaSb/GaAs technology are investigated for the possible application in the near- and mid-infrared, i.e. telecommunication networks, solar cells, gas sensors and imaging systems. These heterostructures exhibit a type-Il band alignment, which means that one species of carriers is confined to the dot, while the other is outside in the surrounding matrix. This physical separation of carriers leads to profound Coulomb interactions, which makes the optical properties of these structures dependent on the injected charge density. The relationship between two of those properties, the emission energy and transition probability, leads to …
A Time-Symmetric Formulation Of Quantum Mechanics, Yakir Aharonov, Sandu Popescu, Jeff Tollaksen
A Time-Symmetric Formulation Of Quantum Mechanics, Yakir Aharonov, Sandu Popescu, Jeff Tollaksen
Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research
Quantum mechanics allows one to independently select both the initial and final states of a single system. Such pre- and postselection reveals novel effects that challenge our ideas about what time is and how it flows.
Band Structure Of Fe Based Superconductors., Teh Yee Lin
Band Structure Of Fe Based Superconductors., Teh Yee Lin
Student Works (2010-2019)
Several iron containing superconductors are discovered in 2008. The discovery introduced a new class of high-temperature superconductors, which are iron-based. The iron-based superconductors do not resemble conventional superconductors and have properties on their own which differ from the cuprates. We have studied the iron selenium, FeSe compound by removing some Se atoms from the lattice forming Fe:Se = 2:1 and 8:6 and also by replacing the Se vacancy with tellurium, samarium and oxygen atoms forming Fe:Se:Te = 2:1:1 and 8:6:2, Fe:Se:O = 8:6:2 and 8:4:2, FeSeSmO, FeSeTeO, Fe2SeSm2O2, FeSeTeSmO and FeTeSmO. The band structures for each lattice are calculated by …
On Relational Quantum Mechanics, Oscar Acosta
On Relational Quantum Mechanics, Oscar Acosta
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
A problem facing quantum mechanics is that there are a number of views or interpretations available that purport to 'explain' quantum mechanics. In this paper I discuss and analyze the view of relational quantum mechanics by Carlo Rovelli in the context of theoretical underdetermination. I will show that even though Rovelli offers a view that consolidates some of the aspects of competing theories it still falls short of breaking out of the theoretical underdetermination. The criteria that I have used to consider a theory successful in this context is one that increases the predictive output of quantum theory. Lacking an …
Upper Limits On A Possible Gluon Mass, Shmuel Nussinov, Robert Shrock
Upper Limits On A Possible Gluon Mass, Shmuel Nussinov, Robert Shrock
Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research
We analyze upper limits on a possible gluon mass, mg. We first discuss various ways to modify quantum chromodynamics to include m(g) not equal 0, including a bare mass, a Higgs mechanism, and dynamical breaking of color SU(3)(c). From an examination of experimental data, we infer an upper limit m(g) < O(1) MeV. As part of our analysis, we show that a claim, hitherto unrefuted in the literature, of a much stronger upper limit on m(g), is invalid. We discuss subtleties in interpreting gluon mass limits in view of the fact that at scales below Lambda(QCD), quantum chromodynamics is strongly coupled, perturbation theory is not reliable, and the physics is not accurately described in terms of the Lagrangian degrees of freedom, including gluons. We also point out a fundamental difference in the behavior of quantum chromodynamics with a nonzero gluon mass and a weakly coupled gauge theory with a gauge boson mass.

We investigate the concept of entropy in probabilistic theories more general than quantum mechanics, with particular reference to the notion of information causality (IC) recently proposed by Pawlowski et al (2009 arXiv:0905.2292). We consider two entropic quantities, which we term measurement and mixing entropy. In the context of classical and quantum theory, these coincide, being given by the Shannon and von Neumann entropies, respectively; in general, however, they are very different. In particular, while measurement entropy is easily seen to be concave, mixing entropy need not be. In fact, as we show, mixing entropy is not concave whenever the state …

We address the problem of interference using the Heisenberg picture and highlight some new aspects through the use of pre-selection, post-selection, weak measurements and modular variables. We present a physical explanation for the different behaviors of a single particle when the distant slit is open or closed; instead of having a quantum wave that passes through all slits, we have a localized particle with non-local interactions with the other slit(s). We introduce a Gedanken experiment to measure this non-local exchange. While the Heisenberg and Schrodinger pictures are equivalent formulations of quantum mechanics, nevertheless, the results discussed here support a new …

Damping And Decoherence Of A Nanomechanical Resonator Due To A Few Two-Level Systems, Laura G. Remus, Miles P. Blencowe, Yukihiro Tanaka
Dartmouth Scholarship
We consider a quantum model of a nanomechanical flexing beam resonator interacting with a bath comprising a few damped tunneling two-level systems. In contrast with a resonator interacting bilinearly with an ohmic free oscillator bath (modeling clamping loss, for example), the mechanical resonator damping is amplitude dependent, while the decoherence of quantum superpositions of mechanical position states depends only weakly on their spatial separation.
Dynamical Quantum Error Correction Of Unitary Operations With Bounded Controls, Kaveh Khodjasteh, Lorenza Viola
Dynamical Quantum Error Correction Of Unitary Operations With Bounded Controls, Kaveh Khodjasteh, Lorenza Viola
Dartmouth Scholarship
Dynamically corrected gates were recently introduced [K. Khodjasteh and L. Viola, Phys. Rev. Lett. 102, 080501 (2009)] as a tool to achieve decoherence-protected quantum gates based on open-loop Hamiltonian engineering. Here, we further expand the framework of dynamical quantum error correction, with emphasis on elucidating under what conditions decoherence suppression can be ensured while performing a generic target quantum gate, using only available bounded-strength control resources. Explicit constructions for physically relevant error models are detailed, including arbitrary linear decoherence and pure dephasing on qubits. The effectiveness of dynamically corrected gates in an illustrative non-Markovian spin-bath setting is investigated numerically, …

We develop, test, and compare new numerical and geometrical methods for improving the accuracy of extracting waveforms using characteristic evolution. The new numerical method involves use of circular boundaries to the stereographic grid patches which cover the spherical cross sections of the outgoing null cones. We show how an angular version of numerical dissipation can be introduced into the characteristic code to damp the high frequency error arising form the irregular way the circular patch boundary cuts through the grid. The new geometric method involves use of the Weyl tensor component Ψ4 to extract the waveform as opposed to …

We demonstrate the usefulness of Second Life as a platform for enlivening major concepts in chemistry education. These concepts include absorption spectra, selection rules, quantum numbers, and atomic orbital shapes. We have built several exhibits in Second Life which provide 3-dimensional interactivity for each of those areas: an interactive experiment showing the absorption spectrum of hydrogen, an interactive model of selection rules showing allowed and forbidden transitions for each state, a 3-dimensional grid of orbitals showing the constraints on the values of quantum numbers, and a large-scale interactive orbital display allowing the user to choose and rotate to-scale atomic orbitals …

Dynamically Error-Corrected Gates For Universal Quantum Computation, Kaveh Khodjasteh, Lorenza Viola
Dynamically Error-Corrected Gates For Universal Quantum Computation, Kaveh Khodjasteh, Lorenza Viola
Dartmouth Scholarship
Scalable quantum computation in realistic devices requires that precise control can be implemented efficiently in the presence of decoherence and operational errors. We propose a general constructive procedure for designing robust unitary gates on an open quantum system without encoding or measurement overhead. Our results allow for a low-level err or correction strategy solely based on Hamiltonian engineering using realistic bounded-strength controls and may substantially reduce implementation requirements for fault-tolerant quantum computing architectures.

Gravitational Redshift And Deflection Of Slow Light, Justin Dressel, S. G. Rajeev, J. C. Howell, Andrew N. Jordan
Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research
We explore the nature of the classical propagation of light through media with strong frequency-dependent dispersion in the presence of a gravitational field. In the weak field limit, gravity causes a redshift of the optical frequency, which the slow-light medium converts into a spatially varying index of refraction. This results in the bending of a light ray in the medium. We further propose experimental techniques to amplify and detect the phenomenon using weak value measurements. Independent heuristic and rigorous derivations of this effect are given.
Dynamical Non-Ergodic Scaling In Continuous Finite-Order Quantum Phase Transitions, S. Deng, G. Ortiz, L. Viola
Dynamical Non-Ergodic Scaling In Continuous Finite-Order Quantum Phase Transitions, S. Deng, G. Ortiz, L. Viola
Dartmouth Scholarship
We investigate the emergence of universal dynamical scaling in quantum critical spin systems adiabatically driven out of equilibrium, with emphasis on quench dynamics which involves non-isolated critical points (i.e., critical regions) and cannot be a priori described through standard scaling arguments nor time-dependent perturbative approaches. Comparing to the case of an isolated quantum critical point, we find that non-equilibrium scaling behavior of a large class of physical observables may still be explained in terms of equilibrium critical exponents. However, the latter are in general non-trivially path-dependent, and detailed knowledge about the time-dependent excitation process becomes essential. In particular, …

Feynman’S Relativistic Electrodynamics Paradox And The Aharonov-Bohm Effect, Adam Caprez, Herman Batelaan
Department of Physics and Astronomy: Faculty Publications
An analysis is done of a relativistic paradox posed in the Feynman Lectures of Physics involving two interacting charges. The physical system presented is compared with similar systems that also lead to relativistic paradoxes. The momentum conservation problem for these systems is presented. The relation between the presented analysis and the ongoing debates on momentum conservation in the Aharonov-Bohm problem is discussed.

Semi-inclusive π+ electroproduction on protons has been measured with the CLAS detector at Jefferson Lab. The measurement was performed on a liquid-hydrogen target using a 5.75 GeV electron beam. The complete five-fold differential cross sections were measured over a wide kinematic range including the complete range of azimuthal angles between hadronic and leptonic planes, ϕ , enabling us to separate the ϕ-dependent terms. Our measurements of the ϕ -independent term of the cross section at low Bjorken x were found to be in fairly good agreement with pQCD calculations. Indeed, the conventional current fragmentation calculation can account for almost all …

The two-body photodisintegration of 4He into a proton and a triton has been studied using the CEBAF Large-Acceptance Spectrometer (CLAS) at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility. Real photons produced with the Hall-B bremsstrahlung-tagging system in the energy range from 0.35 to 1.55 GeV were incident on a liquid 4He target. This is the first measurement of the photodisintegration of 4He above 0.4 GeV. The differential cross sections for the γ 4He →pt reaction were measured as a function of photon-beam energy and proton-scattering angle and are compared with the latest model calculations by J.-M. Laget. At …

We confirm a previous indication of a broad enhancement around a c.m. energy (√ s) of 2.1 GeV at 𝜃c.m. = 90° in the scaled differential cross section s7 dσdt and a rapid falloff in a center-of-mass energy region of about 400 MeV following the enhancement. The De Finetti Theorem For Test Spaces, Jonathan Barrett, Matthew S. Leifer
Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research
We prove a de Finetti theorem for exchangeable sequences of states on test spaces, where a test space is a generalization of the sample space of classical probability theory and the Hilbert space of quantum theory. The standard classical and quantum de Finetti theorems are obtained as special cases. By working in a test space framework, the common features that are responsible for the existence of these theorems are elucidated. In addition, the test space framework is general enough to imply a de Finetti theorem for classical processes. We conclude by discussing the ways in which our assumptions may …

An Estimate Of The Branching Fraction Of Tau -> Pi Eta 'Nu(Tau), Shmuel Nussinov, A. Soffer
Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research
We calculate the expected branching fraction of the second-class-current decay tau -> pi eta 'nu(tau), motivated by a recent experimental upper-limit determination of this quantity. The largest contribution to the branching fraction is due to the intermediate a(0)(980) scalar meson, assuming it is a (u) over bard state. Smaller contributions arise from a(0)(1450), rho(770), and rho(1450). Our calculated values are substantially below the experimental upper limit, and are smaller still if the a(0)(980) is a four-quark state, as often suggested. Thus, a precise measurement or tight upper limit has the potential to determine the nature of the a(0)(980), as well …

Superfluid Turbulence From Quantum Kelvin Wave To Classical Kolmogorov Cascades, Jeffrey Yepez, George Vahala, Linda L. Vahala, Min Soe

The main topological feature of a superfluid is a quantum vortex with an identifiable inner and outer radius. A novel unitary quantum lattice gas algorithm is used to simulate quantum turbulence of a Bose-Einstein condensate superfluid described by the Gross-Pitaevskii equation on grids up to 57603. For the first time, an accurate power-law scaling for the quantum Kelvin wave cascade is determined: k-3. The incompressible kinetic energy spectrum exhibits very distinct power-law spectra in 3 ranges of k space: a classical Kolmogorov k-(5/3) spectrum at scales greater than the outer radius of individual quantum vortex …

We discuss experimental situations that consist of multiple preparation and measurement stages. This leads us to an alternative approach to quantum mechanics. In particular, we introduce the idea of multitime quantum states which are the appropriate tools for describing these experimental situations. We also describe multitime measurements and discuss their relation to multitime states. A consequence of our formalism is to put states and operators on an equal footing. Finally we discuss the implications of our approach to quantum mechanics for the problem of the flow of time.

Quantum Algorithm For Bose-Einstein Condensate Quantum Fluid Dynamics: Twisting Of Filamentary Vortex Solitons Demarcated By Fast Poincare Recursion, Jeffrey Yepez, George Vahala, Linda L. Vahala

The dynamics of vortex solitons is studied in a BEC superfluid. A quantum lattice-gas algorithm (measurementbased quantum computation) is employed to examine the dynamical behavior vortex soliton solutions of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation (ø4 interaction nonlinear Schroedinger equation). Quantum turbulence is studied in large grid numerical simulations: Kolmogorov spectrum associated with a Richardson energy cascade occurs on large flow scales. At intermediate scales, a new k-6 power law emerges, due to vortex filamentary reconnections associated with Kelvin wave instabilities (vortex twisting) coupling to sound modes and the exchange of intermediate vortex rings. Finally, at very small spatial scales a …

In this thesis, we study persistent currents and quantum critical phenomena in the systems of mesoscopic physics. As an introduction in Chapter 1 we familiarize the reader with the area of mesoscopic physics. We explain how mesoscopic systems are different from quantum systems of single atoms and molecules and bulk systems with an Avogadro number of elements. We also describe some important mesoscopic phenomena.
