The Transdisciplinary STEAM+ Journal
Recent developments in theoretical physics suggest the possibility of parallel universes. What if we could see two or more universes at the same time? In effect, superimpose a scene from one universe; say a street corner, over the image of the same scene from a second universe? The photograph “Balconies” imagines the possibilities.
Quantum Programming In Python: Quantum 1d Simple Harmonic Oscillator And Quantum Mapping Gate, Matthew Hoff
Quantum Programming In Python: Quantum 1d Simple Harmonic Oscillator And Quantum Mapping Gate, Matthew Hoff
Physics
A common problem when learning Quantum Mechanics is the complexity in the mathematical and physical concepts, which leads to difficulty in solving and understanding problems. Using programming languages like Python have become more and more prevalent in solving challenging physical systems. An open-source computer algebra system, SymPy, has been developed using Python to help solve these difficult systems. I have added code to the SymPy library for two different systems, a One-Dimensional Quantum Harmonic Oscillator and a Quantum Mapping Gate used in Quantum Computing.
Density Functional Theory And The Calculation Of Tcmg2O4 Spinel Lattice Parameters, Jon Karlo Macias
Density Functional Theory And The Calculation Of Tcmg2O4 Spinel Lattice Parameters, Jon Karlo Macias
Physics
The cohesive energy, lattice constant and bulk modulus of two simple HCP crystal structures of magnesium and technetium were calculated using the vienna ab initio simulation package (VASP) which is based on density functional theory (DFT). The same properties were determined for TcMg2O4 spinel. The theoretical results of the lattice constant of the pure crystals were compared to experimental results and found to be in excellent agreement with a difference of less than 2%. The results for the lattice constant of the TcMg2O4 spinel were found to be in excellent agreement as well with …
Semiclassical Partition Functions For Gravity With Cosmic Strings, Christopher L. Duston
Semiclassical Partition Functions For Gravity With Cosmic Strings, Christopher L. Duston
Physics Faculty Publications
In this paper we describe an approach to construct semiclassical partition functions in gravity which are complete in the sense that they contain a complete description of the differentiable structures of the underlying 4-manifold. In addition, we find our construction naturally includes cosmic strings. We prove that the mass density of these strings uniquely specifies the topology of the leaves of a dimension 2 foliation, and conjecture that spacetime topology emerges as a result of the symmetry breaking of the fundamental fields. We discuss some possible applications of the partition functions in the fields of both quantum gravity and topological …
Quantum Computing With Steady State Spin Currents, Brian Matthew Sutton
Quantum Computing With Steady State Spin Currents, Brian Matthew Sutton
Open Access Theses
Many approaches to quantum computing use spatially confined qubits in the presence of dynamic fields to perform computation. These approaches are contrasted with proposals using mobile qubits in the presence of static fields. In this thesis, steady state quantum computing using mobile electrons is explored using numerical modeling. Firstly, a foundational introduction to the case of spatially confined qubits embodied via quantum dots is provided. A collection of universal gates implemented with dynamic fields is described using simulations. These gates are combined to implement a five-qubit Grover search to provide further insight on the time-dependent field approach. Secondly, the quantum …

Maximally Epistemic Interpretations Of The Quantum State And Contextuality, Matthew S. Leifer, O. J. E. Maroney
Maximally Epistemic Interpretations Of The Quantum State And Contextuality, Matthew S. Leifer, O. J. E. Maroney
Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research
We examine the relationship between quantum contextuality (in both the standard Kochen-Specker sense and in the generalized sense proposed by Spekkens) and models of quantum theory in which the quantum state is maximally epistemic. We find that preparation noncontextual models must be maximally epistemic, and these in turn must be Kochen-Specker noncontextual. This implies that the Kochen-Specker theorem is sufficient to establish both the impossibility of maximally epistemic models and the impossibility of preparation noncontextual models. The implication from preparation noncontextual to maximally epistemic then also yields a proof of Bell’s theorem from an Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen-like argument.

The exclusive electroproduction of π + above the resonance region was studied using the CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer (CLAS) at Jefferson Laboratory by scattering a 6GeV continuous electron beam off a hydrogen target. The large acceptance and good resolution of CLAS, together with the high luminosity, allowed us to measure the cross section for the γ * p → nπ + process in 140 (Q 2, x B , t) bins: 0.16 < x B < 0.58, 1.6 GeV2 < Q 2 < 4.5 GeV2 and 0.1 GeV2 < −t < 5.3 GeV2. For most bins, the statistical accuracy is on the order of a …

Background: The discrepancy between proton electromagnetic form factors extracted using unpolarized and polarized scattering data is believed to be a consequence of two-photon exchange (TPE) effects. However, the calculations of TPE corrections have significant model dependence, and there is limited direct experimental evidence for such corrections.
Purpose: The TPE contributions depend on the sign of the lepton charge in e±p scattering, but the luminosities of secondary positron beams limited past measurement at large scattering angles, where the TPE effects are believe to be most significant. We present the results of a new experimental technique for making direct e±p comparisons, which …

Experimental results on the Σ+(1189) hyperon transverse polarization in photoproduction on a hydrogen target using the CLAS detector at Jefferson Laboratory are presented. The Σ+(1189) was reconstructed in the exclusive reaction γ+p→K0S+Σ+(1189) via the Σ+→pπ0 decay mode. The K0S was reconstructed in the invariant mass of two oppositely charged pions with the π0 identified in the missing mass of the detected pπ+π− final state. Experimental data were collected in the photon energy range Eγ=1.0 –3.5 GeV (√s range 1.66–2.73 GeV). We observe a large negative polarization …
Rapidity Evolution Of Wilson Lines At The Next-To-Leading Order, Ian Balitsky, Giovanni A. Chirilli
Rapidity Evolution Of Wilson Lines At The Next-To-Leading Order, Ian Balitsky, Giovanni A. Chirilli
Physics Faculty Publications
At high energies, particles move very fast, so the proper degrees of freedom for the fast gluons moving along the straight lines are Wilson-line operators—infinite gauge factors ordered along the line. In the framework of operator expansion in Wilson lines, the energy dependence of the amplitudes is determined by the rapidity evolution of Wilson lines. We present the next-to-leading order hierarchy of the evolution equations for Wilson-line operators.

The photon impact factor for the Balitsky-Fadin-Kuraev-Lipatov pomeron is calculated in the next-to-leading order approximation using the operator expansion in Wilson lines. The result is represented as a next-to-leading order 𝑘T-factorization formula for the structure functions of small-𝓍 deep inelastic scattering.

What light is and how to describe it has always been a central subject in physics. As our understanding has increased, so have our theories changed: geometrical optics, wave optics and quantum optics are increasingly sophisticated descriptions, each referring to a larger class of phenomena than its predecessor. But how exactly are these theories related? How and when wave optics reduces to geometric optics is a rather simple problem. Similarly, how quantum optics reduces to wave optics has also been considered to be a very simple business. It is not so. As we show here the classical limit of quantum …

Effective Field Theory Approach To Gravitationally Induced Decoherence, M. P. Blencowe
Dartmouth Scholarship
Adopting the viewpoint that the standard perturbative quantization of general relativity provides an effective description of quantum gravity that is valid at ordinary energies, we show that gravity as an environment induces the rapid decoherence of stationary matter superposition states when the energy differences in the superposition exceed the Planck energy scale.

Towards A Formulation Of Quantum Theory As A Causally Neutral Theory Of Bayesian Inference, Matthew S. Leifer, Robert W. Spekkens
Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research
Quantum theory can be viewed as a generalization of classical probability theory, but the analogy as it has been developed so far is not complete. Whereas themanner in which inferences aremade in classical probability theory is independent of the causal relation that holds between the conditioned variable and the conditioning variable, in the conventional quantum formalism, there is a significant difference between how one treats experiments involving two systems at a single time and those involving a single system at two times. In this article, we develop the formalism of quantum conditional states, which provides a unified description of …

Point–Counterpoint: Can Anything Be Learned From Surveys On The Interpretations Of Quantum Mechanics?, Matthew S. Leifer, Nathan Harshman
Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research
"In what follows, Matt Leifer and Nathan Harshman present opposing views on the value of surveys on foundational attitudes towards quantum mechanics. Three such surveys were recently published and their results are summarized in Table 1. Matt takes the `point,’ arguing that such surveys are not useful, while Nathan takes the `counterpoint.’ A complete set of references for both is given at the end."

Weak Values Are Universal In Von Neumann Measurements, Justin Dressel, Andrew N. Jordan
Weak Values Are Universal In Von Neumann Measurements, Justin Dressel, Andrew N. Jordan
Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research
We refute the widely held belief that the quantum weak value necessarily pertains to weak measurements. To accomplish this, we use the transverse position of a beam as the detector for the conditioned von Neumann measurement of a system observable. For any coupling strength, any initial states, and any choice of conditioning, the averages of the detector position and momentum are completely described by the real parts of three generalized weak values in the joint Hilbert space. Higher-order detector moments also have similar weak value expansions. Using the Wigner distribution of the initial detector state, we find compact expressions for …

Logistic Curves, Extraction Costs And Peak Oil, Robert J. Brecha
Physics Faculty Publications
Debates about the possibility of a near-term maximum in world oil production have become increasingly prominent over the past decade, with the focus often being on the quantification of geologically available and technologically recoverable amounts of oil in the ground. Economically, the important parameter is not a physical limit to resources in the ground, but whether market price signals and costs of extraction will indicate the efficiency of extracting conventional or nonconventional resources as opposed to making substitutions over time for other fuels and technologies. We present a hybrid approach to the peak-oil question with two models in which the …

On The Geometrıc Interpretatıons Of The Kleın-Gordon Equatıon And Solution Of The Equation By Homotopy Perturbation Method, Hasan Bulut, H. M. Başkonuş
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
This paper is organized in the following ways: In the first part, we obtained the Klein Gordon Equation (KGE) in the Galilean space. In the second part, we applied Homotopy Perturbation Method (HPM) to this differential equation. In the third part, we gave two examples for the Klein Gordon equation. Finally, We compared the numerical results of this differential equation with their exact results. We also showed that approach used is easy and highly accurate.
A Gauge Theoretic Treatment Of Rovibrational Motion In Diatoms, Gregory Colarch
A Gauge Theoretic Treatment Of Rovibrational Motion In Diatoms, Gregory Colarch
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
The Born-Oppenheimer approximation has long been the standard approach to solving the Schrödinger equation for diatomic molecules. In it, nuclear and electronic motions are separated into "slow" and "fast" degrees of freedom and couplings between the two are ignored. The neglect of non-adiabatic couplings leads to an incomplete description of diatomic motion, and in a more refined approach, non-adiabatic couplings are uncoupled by transforming the angular momentum of the molecule and electrons into the body-fixed frame.
In this thesis we examine a "modern" form of the Born-Oppenheimer approximation by exploiting a gauge theoretic approach in a description of molecular motion. …
Electron–Phonon Coupling And Structural Phase Transitions On Au/Mo(112), Keisuke Fukutani
Electron–Phonon Coupling And Structural Phase Transitions On Au/Mo(112), Keisuke Fukutani
Department of Physics and Astronomy: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
The electronic structures, many-body interactions and Fermi surface topologies of Au/Mo(112) were investigated in detail and were found to play important roles in the newly discovered order-disorder structural phase transition of the system. First, the high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy was utilized to characterize the electronic band structure of Mo(112) in far greater details than before. This elucidated the existence of several surface-derived states and their dispersion relations in high precisions near the Fermi level, as well as the symmetries of the bulk and surface electronic states, which are in good quantitative agreement with the ab-initio calculations. Such thorough understanding of …
Automated Synthesis Of Dynamically Corrected Quantum Gates, Kaveh Khodjasteh, Hendrik Bluhm, Lorenza Viola
Automated Synthesis Of Dynamically Corrected Quantum Gates, Kaveh Khodjasteh, Hendrik Bluhm, Lorenza Viola
Dartmouth Scholarship
Dynamically corrected gates are extended to non-Markovian open quantum systems where limitations on the available controls and/or the presence of control noise make existing analytical approaches unfeasible. A computational framework for the synthesis of dynamically corrected gates is formalized that allows sensitivity against non-Markovian decoherence and control errors to be perturbatively minimized via numerical search, resulting in robust gate implementations. Explicit sequences for achieving universal high-fidelity control in a singlet-triplet spin qubit subject to realistic system and control constraint are provided, which simultaneously cancel to the leading order the dephasing due to non-Markovian nuclear-bath dynamics and voltage noise affecting the …

Hohenberg-Kohn Theorem Including Electron Spin, Xiao-Yin Pan, Viraht Sahni
Publications and Research
The Hohenberg-Kohn theorem is generalized to the case of a finite system of N electrons in external electrostatic epsilon(r) = -del nu(r) and magnetostatic B(r) = del x A(r) fields in which the interaction of the latter with both the orbital and spin angular momentum is considered. For a nondegenerate ground state a bijective relationship is proved between the gauge invariant density rho(r) and physical current density j(r) and the potentials {nu(r), A(r)}. The possible many-to-one relationship between the potentials {v(r), A(r)} and the wave function is explicitly accounted for in the proof. With the knowledge that the basic variables …

Nanomechanical Resonator Coupled Linearly Via Its Momentum To A Quantum Point Contact, Latchezar L. Benatov, Miles P. Blencowe
Dartmouth Scholarship
We use a Born-Markov approximated master equation approach to study the symmetrized-in-frequency current noise spectrum and the oscillator steady state of a nanoelectromechanical system where a nanoscale resonator is coupled linearly via its momentum to a quantum point contact (QPC). Our current noise spectra exhibit clear signatures of the quantum correlations between the QPC current and the back-action force on the oscillator at a value of the relative tunneling phase (η=−π/2) where such correlations are expected to be maximized. We also show that the steady state of the oscillator obeys a classical Fokker-Planck equation, but can experience thermomechanical noise squeezing …

Supersymmetric Quantum Mechanics And Solvable Models, Asim Gangopadhyaya, Jonathan Bougie, Jeffrey Mallow, C. Rasinariu
Physics: Faculty Publications and Other Works
We review solvable models within the framework of supersymmetric quantum mechanics (SUSYQM). In SUSYQM, the shape invariance condition insures solvability of quantum mechanical problems. We review shape invariance and its connection to a consequent potential algebra. The additive shape invariance condition is specified by a difference-differential equation; we show that this equation is equivalent to an infinite set of partial differential equations. Solving these equations, we show that the known list of h-independent superpotentials is complete. We then describe how these equations could be extended to include superpotentials that do depend on h.

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)
Modern physical theories are deterministic in the sense that once we know the current state of the world, we can, in principle, predict all the future states. This was true for classical (pre-quantum) theories, this is true for modern quantum physics. On the other hand, we all know that we can make decision that change the state of the world -- even if, for most of us, a little bit. This intuitive idea of free will permeates all our life, all our activities -- and it seems to contradict the determinism of modern physics. It is therefore desirable to incorporate …
