In this paper we start the study of Schur analysis for Cauchy–Fueter regular quaternionic-valued functions, i.e. null solutions of the Cauchy–Fueter operator in . The novelty of the approach developed in this paper is that we consider axially regular functions, i.e. functions spanned by the so-called Clifford-Appell polynomials. This type of functions arises naturally from two well-known extension results in hypercomplex analysis: the Fueter mapping theorem and the generalized Cauchy–Kovalevskaya (GCK) extension. These results allow one to obtain axially regular functions starting from analytic functions of one real or complex variable. Precisely, in the Fueter theorem two operators play a …
Optimal Control Of Coefficients For The Second Order Parabolic Free Boundary Problems, Ali Hagverdiyev
Optimal Control Of Coefficients For The Second Order Parabolic Free Boundary Problems, Ali Hagverdiyev
Mathematics Colloquium Series
In this talk I will discuss Inverse Stefan type free boundary problem for the second order parabolic equation arising for instance, in modeling of laser ablation of biomedical tissues, where the information on the coefficients, heat flux on the fixed boundary, and density of heat sources are missing and must be found along with the temperature and free boundary. New PDE constrained optimal control framework is employed, where the missing data and the free boundary are components of the control vector, and optimality criteria are based on the final moment measurement of the temperature and position of the free boundary. …
The History Of The Billboard Hot 100 And Its Process, Brileigh Cates
The History Of The Billboard Hot 100 And Its Process, Brileigh Cates
Undergraduate Research Conference at Missouri S&T
The Billboard Hot 100 has been around for decades, and it is believed without much accreditation. What really is Billboard, and why is it so popular? Why have other charting companies not taken up as much popularity? How does Billboard determine the popularity of artists? How has this changed with the introduction of the internet? This research project addresses all of these question, allowing the validity of the data collection to be addressed.
Numerical Studies On Bose–Einstein Condensates, Megan Benkendorf
Numerical Studies On Bose–Einstein Condensates, Megan Benkendorf
Undergraduate Research Conference at Missouri S&T
Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) is a state of matter near absolute zero temperature for which all atoms lose their individual properties and condense into a macroscopic coherent "super-wave". The superfluidity of BEC has been the focus of active research since the first experimental realization of BEC in 1995. The recent launch of the Cold Atom Laboratory to the space station on May 21, 2018, has once again drawn spotlights to these fascinating properties of BEC. In this project, we will carry out numerical studies to understand the behavior of exciton-polariton BECs. A modified Gross-Pitaevskii equation is used to model the dynamics …

Gender And The Billboard Top 40 Charts Between 1958 And 2023, Brileigh Cates, Justin W. Pope
Undergraduate Research Conference at Missouri S&T
Is there an inherent bias towards male artists in the music industry? Evidence has been shown in previous studies, the most recent being from 2017, that there may be bias towards male artists appearing in Billboard Magazine s Hot 100 list. This study not only updates previous data to include 2017 through 2023, but also looks at the top 40 charts on a week-by-week bias as opposed to the year-end charts that other studies used for their data. We coded each song so as to indicate the gender of the artist(s) as well as whether or not the artists appeared …

Structure Of A Class Of Ordinary Differential Equations, Letao Chang
Structure Of A Class Of Ordinary Differential Equations, Letao Chang
SACAD: Scholarly Activities
In the realm of mathematics, an ordinary differential equation (ODE) denotes a particular type of differential equation contingent solely upon a single independent variable. Similar to other differential equations, an ODE involves one or more functions as its unknowns and encompasses derivatives of these functions. The designation "ordinary" serves to distinguish these equations from partial differential equations, which may pertain to multiple independent variables.

Optimal Control For Delayed Nanoparticle Dosing Models Using Conformable Derivatives, Drew Barnes, Micah Duffield, Abi Waters
2024 Student Academic Showcase
Previously, a research group used a theoretical state-space framework to study the effects nanoparticles had on cancerous tumors in mice. Since sensors are used to determine the number of nanoparticles found in the bloodstream, it is natural for a time delay to occur when making adjustments to the dosage. Here, an equal time delay has been put on the state and control to study the effects of multiple dosage strategies. However, these researchers did not consider how the absorption of these nanoparticles would affect treatment. In this project, we construct a model using a conformable derivative first introduced by Khalil …

Quandle Rings, Idempotents And Cocycle Invariants Of Knots, Dipali Swain
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Quandles are sets with self-distributive binary operations that axiomatize the three Reidemeister movesin classical knot theory. In an attempt to bring ring theoretic techniques to the study of quandles, a theory of quandle rings analogous to the classical theory of group rings where several interconnections between quandles and their associated quandle rings have been explored. Functoriality of the construction implies that morphisms of quandle rings give a natural enhancement of the well-known quandle coloring and quandle 2 cocycle invariant of knots and links.
The dissertation is structured into two main parts. In the first part, we delve into quandle rings …

A Note On Umbilic Points At Infinity, Brendan Guilfoyle
A Note On Umbilic Points At Infinity, Brendan Guilfoyle
Department of Mathematics Publications
In this note a definition of umbilic point at infinity is proposed, at least for surfaces that are homogeneous polynomial graphs over a plane in Euclidean 3-space. This is a stronger definition than that of Toponogov in his study of complete convex surfaces, and allows one to distinguish between different umbilic points at infinity. It is proven that all such umbilic points at infinity are isolated, that they occur in pairs and are the zeroes of the projective extension of the third fundamental form, as developed in Guilfoyle and Ortiz-Rodríguez (Math Proc R Ir Acad 123A(2), 63–94, 2023). Reducibility Of Schrödinger Operators On Multilayer Graphs, Jorge Villalobos Alvarado
Reducibility Of Schrödinger Operators On Multilayer Graphs, Jorge Villalobos Alvarado
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
A local defect in an atomic structure can engender embedded eigenvalues when the associated Schrödinger operator is either block reducible or Fermi reducible, and having multilayer structures appears to be typically necessary for obtaining such types of reducibility. Discrete and quantum graph models are commonly used in this context as they often capture the relevant features of the physical system in consideration.
This dissertation lays out the framework for studying different types of multilayer discrete and quantum graphs that enjoy block or Fermi reducibility. Schrödinger operators with both electric and magnetic potentials are considered. We go on to construct a …
Finite Monodromy And Artin Representations, Emma Lien
Finite Monodromy And Artin Representations, Emma Lien
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Artin representations, which are complex representations of finite Galois groups, appear in many contexts in number theory. The Langlands program predicts that Galois representations like these should arise from automorphic representations and many examples of this correspondence have been found such as in the proof of Fermat's Last Theorem. This dissertation aims to make an analysis of explicitly computable examples of Artin representations from both sides of this correspondence. On the automorphic side, certain weight 1 modular forms have been shown to be related to Artin representations and an explicit analysis of their Fourier coefficients allows us to identify the …

Subroups Of Coxeter Groups And Stallings Foldings, Jake A. Murphy
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
For each finitely generated subgroup of a Coxeter group, we define a cell complex called a completion. We show that these completions characterizes the index and normality of the subgroup. We construct a completion corresponding to the intersection of two subgroups and use this construction to characterize malnormality of subgroups of right-angled Coxeter groups. Finally, we show that if a completion of a subgroup is finite, then the subgroup is quasiconvex. Using this, we show that certain reflection subgroups of a Coxeter are quasiconvex.

Analytic Wavefront Sets Of Spherical Distributions On The De Sitter Space, Iswarya Sitiraju
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
In this work, we determine the wavefront set of certain eigendistributions of the Laplace-Beltrami operator on the de Sitter space. Let G′ = O1,n(R) be the Lorentz group, and let H′ = O1,n−1(R) ⊂ G′ be its subset. The de Sitter space dSn is a one-sheeted hyperboloid in R1,n isomorphic to G′/H′. A spherical distribution is an H′-invariant eigendistribution of the Laplace-Beltrami operator on dSn. The space of spherical distributions with eigenvalue λ, denoted by DλH'(dSn), has dimension 2. We construct a basis for the space of …

The Modular Generalized Springer Correspondence For The Symplectic Group, Joseph Dorta
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
The Modular Generalized Springer Correspondence (MGSC), as developed by Achar, Juteau, Henderson, and Riche, stands as a significant extension of the early groundwork laid by Lusztig's Springer Correspondence in characteristic zero which provided crucial insights into the representation theory of finite groups of Lie type. Building upon Lusztig's work, a generalized version of the Springer Correspondence was later formulated to encompass broader contexts.
In the realm of modular representation theory, Juteau's efforts gave rise to the Modular Springer Correspondence, offering a framework to explore the interplay between algebraic geometry and representation theory in positive characteristic. Achar, Juteau, Henderson, and Riche …

Study Of Hybrid Nanofluid Flow In A Stationary Cone-Disk System With Temperature-Dependent Fluid Properties, A. S. John, Mahanthesh Basavarajappa, G. Lorenzini
School of Mathematical & Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications
Cone-disk systems find frequent use such as conical diffusers, medical devices, various rheometric, and viscosimetry applications. In this study, we investigate the three-dimensional flow of a water-based Ag-MgO hybrid nanofluid in a static cone-disk system while considering temperature-dependent fluid properties. How the variable fluid properties affect the dynamics and heat transfer features is studied by Reynolds’s linearized model for variable viscosity and Chiam’s model for variable thermal conductivity. The single-phase nanofluid model is utilized to describe convective heat transfer in hybrid nanofluids, incorporating the experimental data. This model is developed as a coupled system of convective-diffusion equations, encompassing the conservation …

Update From Aristotle To Newton, From Sets To Fuzzy Sets, And From Sigmoid To Relu: What Do All These Transitions Have In Common?, Christian Servin, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich
Departmental Technical Reports (CS)
In this paper, we show that there is a -- somewhat unexpected -- common trend behind several seemingly unrelated historic transitions: from Aristotelian physics to modern (Newton's) approach, from crisp sets (such as intervals) to fuzzy sets, and from traditional neural networks, with close-to-step-function sigmoid activation functions to modern successful deep neural networks that use a completely different ReLU activation function. In all these cases, the main idea of the corresponding transition can be explained, in mathematical terms, as going from the first order to second order differential equations.
Variable-Order Fractional Laplacian And Its Accurate And Efficient Computations With Meshfree Methods, Yixuan Wu, Yanzhi Zhang
Variable-Order Fractional Laplacian And Its Accurate And Efficient Computations With Meshfree Methods, Yixuan Wu, Yanzhi Zhang
Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works
The variable-order fractional Laplacian plays an important role in the study of heterogeneous systems. In this paper, we propose the first numerical methods for the variable-order Laplacian (-Δ) α (x) / 2 with 0 < α (x) ≤ 2, which will also be referred as the variable-order fractional Laplacian if α(x) is strictly less than 2. We present a class of hypergeometric functions whose variable-order Laplacian can be analytically expressed. Building on these analytical results, we design the meshfree methods based on globally supported radial basis functions (RBFs), including Gaussian, generalized inverse multiquadric, and Bessel-type RBFs, to approximate the variable-order Laplacian (-Δ) α (x) / 2. Our meshfree methods integrate the advantages of both pseudo-differential and hypersingular integral forms of the variable-order fractional Laplacian, and thus avoid numerically approximating the hypersingular integral. Moreover, our methods are simple and flexible of domain geometry, and their computer implementation remains the same for any dimension d ≥ 1. Compared to finite difference methods, our methods can achieve a desired accuracy with much fewer points. This fact makes our method much attractive for problems involving variable-order fractional Laplacian where the number of points required is a critical cost. We then apply our method to study solution behaviors of variable-order fractional PDEs arising in different fields, including transition of waves between classical and fractional media, and coexistence of anomalous and normal diffusion in both diffusion equation and the Allen–Cahn equation. These results would provide insights for further understanding and applications of variable-order fractional derivatives.

Studies of how people actually make decisions have led to an empirical formula that predicts the probability of different decisions based on the utilities of different alternatives. This formula is known as McFadden's formula, after a Nobel prize winning economist who discovered it. A similar formula -- known as softmax -- describes the probability that the classification predicted by a deep neural network is correct, based on the neural network's degrees of confidence in the object belonging to each class. In practice, we usually do not know the exact values of the utilities -- or of the degrees of confidence. …

In general, in statistics, the most widely used way to describe the difference between different elements of a sample if by using standard deviation. This characteristic has a nice property of being decomposable: e.g., to compute the mean and standard deviation of the income overall the whole US, it is sufficient to compute the number of people, mean, and standard deviation over each state; this state-by-state information is sufficient to uniquely reconstruct the overall standard deviation. However, e.g., for gauging income inequality, standard deviation is not very adequate: it provides too much weight to outliers like billionaires, and thus, does …

Logical paradoxes show that human reasoning is not always fully captured by the traditional 2-valued logic, that this logic's extensions -- such as multi-valued logics -- are needed. Because of this, the study of paradoxes is important for research on multi-valued logics. In this paper, we focus on paradoxes of set theory. Specifically, we show their analogy with the known paradox of causality, and we use this analogy to come up with similar set-theoretic paradoxes.

In a computer, usually, all real numbers are stored by using the same number of bits: usually, 8 bytes, i.e., 64 bits. This amount of bits enables us to represent numbers with high accuracy -- up to 19 decimal digits. However, in most cases -- whether we process measurement results or whether we process expert-generated membership degrees -- we do not need that accuracy, so most bits are wasted. To save space, it is therefore reasonable to consider representations with varying number of bits. This would save space used for representing numbers themselves, but we would also need to store …
