This research aims to develop formative assessment media assisted by conceptual scaffolding to improve students’ understanding of temperature and heat, test its validity and practicality, and gauge student responses. Utilizing the ADDIE model, the research follows five stages: Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation. In the Analysis stage, a literature review was conducted to identify critical components, including formative assessment, conceptual scaffolding, concept mastery, and previous research. The Design stage involved identifying users, defining competencies and indicators, creating a storyboard, integrating assessment components, and determining mastery levels. This paper shares a novel format for Math Circles, which we call “circles with no center.” Circles with no center do not have a traditional facilitator. The problem or activity is novel to everyone in the room. All members engage in mathematical inquiry, and everyone takes responsibility for running the gathering. The “no center” format has benefits for participants and organizers. For participants, the format offers more freedom and more responsibility. For organizers, the format is easier to organize, more fun, and involves less pressure. Our assessment of a 3-day retreat for teachers suggests participants may prefer a circle with …

Background: The advantages of breastfeeding and its role in emergencies are undeniable. Studies show that many women in developed countries choose formula over breastmilk, even in emergencies. Nevertheless, no one knows if postpartum women under the Women, Infants and Children (WIC) program turned out to breastfeed or re-lactate their infants during these crises. This study aims to better understand WIC participants' perceptions about breastfeeding their babies in emergencies.

Missing observations within the univariate time series are common in real-life and cause analytical problems in the flow of the analysis. Imputation of missing values is an inevitable step in every incomplete univariate time series. Most of the existing studies focus on comparing the distributions of imputed data. There is a gap of knowledge on how different imputation methods for univariate time series affect the forecasting performance of time series models. A class G of graphs is called hereditary if it is closed under taking induced subgraphs. We denote by G^{apex} the class of graphs G that contain a vertex v such that G − v is in G. Borowiecki, Drgas-Burchardt, and Sidorowicz proved that if a hereditary class G has finitely many forbidden induced subgraphs, then so does G^{apex}. We provide an elementary proof of this result.

In this paper we discuss the power series method to obtain traveling wave solutions of nonlinear PDE in one space variable. The method, including a recursive procedure for the coefficients and error estimate for the partial sums, is presented for the Camassa-Holm equation. Non-Gaussian uncertainty frequently arises in learning and control problems involving stochastic dynamical systems, particularly in autonomous vehicles, UAVs, satellites, and robotics. In this dissertation, we propose a new framework that leverages characteristic functions that provides a frequency-domain representation of random variables. The dissertation is structured into three key areas. First, we address model-based stochastic optimal control for linear systems with non-Gaussian noise, demonstrating that characteristic functions can be used to enforce chance constraints and control systems toward desired distributions. The Wins Above Replacement (WAR) statistic in Major League Baseball is a prominent metric used to estimate player value by quantifying all aspects of play in terms of wins added to a baseball team. We will use R to calculate WAR for all players from 1871 to 2012 and use data from those years to construct multivariate predictive models to attempt to estimate WAR for players from 2013 to 2024. We find strong correlations between predicted and actual WAR values for most models, with the exception of the polynomial predictive model for non-qualified pitchers.

In this dissertation, we study the existence and uniqueness of positive solutions for classes of nonlinear boundary value problems. In the first study, we the ��-superlinear case, we prove the existence of a large positive solution when a parameter is small and if, in addition, the reaction term satisfies a concavity-like condition at the origin, the existence of two positive solutions for a certain range of the parameter. Snakebite envenoming is a serious condition that affects 2.5 million people and causes 81,000–138,000 deaths every year, particularly in tropical and subtropical regions. The World Health Organization has set a goal to halve the deaths and disabilities related to snakebite envenoming by 2030. However, significant challenges in achieving this goal include a lack of robust research evidence related to snakebite incidence and treatment, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa. This study aimed to combine established methodologies with the latest tools in Artificial Intelligence to assess the barriers to effective snakebite treatment in Ghana.

The snake cube is a puzzle that consists of straight and turn pieces attached by a string that folds into a n x n x n cube. Finding solutions for large cubes is difficult, so finding necessary conditions for solutions is crucial. Using computational algorithms and mathematical proofs, I find improved bounds for the maximum number of straight pieces in a given puzzle size. In particular, I introduce and apply the adjacency criterion to identify groups of puzzles that are unsolvable. Beginning with Claude Debussy’s Berceuse Héroïque, I analyzed each triad using chord symbols along with their Roman numeral representation (where applicable).1 Next, I used integer notation and modular arithmetic, where each pitch name is given a number such that C is 0 and B is 11, creating a set, the integers (mod 12).

Direct reciprocity is a wide-spread mechanism for the evolution of cooperation. In repeated interactions, players can condition their behavior on previous outcomes. A well-known approach is given by reactive strategies, which respond to the coplayer's previous move. Here, we extend reactive strategies to longer memories. A reactive-n strategy takes into account the sequence of the last n moves of the coplayer. A reactive-n counting strategy responds to how often the coplayer cooperated during the last n rounds. We derive an algorithm to identify the partner strategies within these strategy sets. Partner strategies are those that ensure mutual cooperation without exploitation. …

We consider an elliptic problem with nonlinear boundary condition involving nonlinearity with superlinear and subcritical growth at infinity and a bifurcation parameter as a factor. We use re-scaling method, degree theory and continuation theorem to prove that there exists a connected branch of positive solutions bifurcating from infinity when the parameter goes to zero. Moreover, if the nonlinearity satisfies additional conditions near zero, we establish a global bifurcation result, and discuss the number of positive solution(s) with respect to the parameter using bifurcation theory and degree theory.

We use an idea of Pólya and Szegö to give a common basis to Vieta’s formula, Fabius function and the partition function. Moreover our construction leads also to a function considered by Hallström, Bowen and Macintyre, which has, as a particular value, the Kepler-Bouwkamp constant, and to a function considered by Zondadari, that vanishes only at prime numbers.

This project focuses specifically on the Walt Disney World Park, Magic Kingdom. I started by collecting data through the MyDisneyExperience app. By recording the data, I was then able to create polynomial functions to the fifth the degree. Each attraction received a function which allowed me to predict the wait times for that attraction. Then, by graphing the functions and analyzing the graph using calculus the “best time” and “worst time” to go to the attraction were found. Earthquakes usually occur in the vicinity of fault lines. Until recently, geophysical analysis implied that the fault shape should not strongly affect the frequency of its earthquakes. However, recent statistical analysis has shown that faults whose shape is close to linear experience much fewer earthquakes than faults of more complex shape. Based on this empirical fact, researchers have adjusted the corresponding geophysical models, so the updated models do explain this newly discovered phenomenon. Purpose: When several participants, working together, gained some amount of money, what is the fair way to distribute this amount between them? For a complex engineering system -- such as a city's street network -- it is important to predict how its functionality is decreased when some of these components break down, and, if repairs are needed and repairs budget is limited, which subset of the set of components should be repaired first to maximize the resulting functionality. For complex engineering systems, the usual way to estimate their reliability is to run simulations. If the resulting estimate does not satisfy the desired reliability level, we must replace some components with more reliable and again run simulations. Research about multiple positive solutions for fractional differential equations is very important. Based on some outstanding results reported in this field, this paper continues the focus on this topic. By using the properties of the Green function and generalized Avery–Henderson fixed point theorem, we derive three positive solutions of a class of fractional differential equations with a p-Laplacian operator. We also study the nonexistence of positive solutions to the eigenvalue problem of the equation. Three examples are given to illustrate our main result.

In this paper we introduce a design, called “geodetic-design" arising from geodetic sets in a graph. A geodetic-design, over a regular graph is an ordered pair D = (V, B), where V = V (G) and B, the set of all geodetic sets, called blocks, containing vertices belonging to geodetic sets, such that every pair of non-adjacent vertices appears in exactly µ blocks.
