The Trattato dell’Alcibra Amuchabile is a pre-modern algebra text from c. 1365. It is written in a Tuscan dialect of Italian and is situated in the abbacus school tradition, schools that taught the mathematics needed for a mercantile society. Like all the algebra written in Italy at the time, it was inherited from al-Khwarizmi and, like his, written with no symbols—no x’s, y’s, plus signs, etc. It was what is sometimes called “rhetorical algebra.” There is very little source material available in English from this important era in the history of algebra. This book helps fill that gap. …

Frequent mutations in influenza virus surface proteins can increase infectivity while evading human and vaccine immunity, causing seasonal epidemics. The CDC annually evaluates thousands of virus strains to predict mutated sequences likely to be dominant in the next season, which creates a need for methods that better capture how viral mutations evolve over time. In this study, we represent influenza protein sequences as a network-like graph, creating connections if sequences are collected a week apart and only differ by one mutation. This method explicitly considers time information as part of the evolution, while other existing methods analyze mutated sequences without …

Simulation Of Fluid Flow Based On Navier Stokes Equations, Ricardo Marquez, Javier Perez

This work presents a computational study of incompressible flow based on the Navier-Stokes equations using finite element method. The Crank-Nicolson approximation is used for discretizing the time derivative. The study consists of investigating the effect of the choice of finite elements and the size of the time step in obtaining the numerical velocity and pressure. This is illustrated with FreeFEM++ simulations of the von Karman benchmark flow problem. Profiles of drag, lift and pressure drop will be presented in time.

One of the central open problems concerning the Fomin-Kirillov algebras was whether their dimension is finite or infinite. This question was recently resolved in one research by C. Barligea, where it was shown that FK(n) is infinite-dimensional for all n ≥ 6. In our work, we investigate the dimension of a certain subalgebra of FK(6).

In October 2017, the asteroid 1I/’Oumuamua first passed into viewing range [1]. The asteroid is notable for being the first interstellar object to enter the solar system. 1I/’Oumuamua was also unusual in its geometry; it is thought to have an aspect ratio of 6:1 and a length of approximately 400 m [2] [3]. The asteroid was observed to experience a non-Keplerian acceleration estimated to be on the order of 1×10−6 m s-2 Several theories have been proposed for the cause of this acceleration, all of which are non-gravitational in nature: volatile outgassing, photon pressure, and solar winds [1][4].
