A Bridge Between Graph Neural Networks And Transformers: Positional Encodings As Node Embeddings, Bright Kwaku Manu
A Bridge Between Graph Neural Networks And Transformers: Positional Encodings As Node Embeddings, Bright Kwaku Manu
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Graph Neural Networks and Transformers are very powerful frameworks for learning machine learning tasks. While they were evolved separately in diverse fields, current research has revealed some similarities and links between them. This work focuses on bridging the gap between GNNs and Transformers by offering a uniform framework that highlights their similarities and distinctions. We perform positional encodings and identify key properties that make the positional encodings node embeddings. We found that the properties of expressiveness, efficiency and interpretability were achieved in the process. We saw that it is possible to use positional encodings as node embeddings, which can be …
The Persuasive Effect Of Ai-Synthesized Voices, Hannah H. Chang, Anirban Mukherjee
The Persuasive Effect Of Ai-Synthesized Voices, Hannah H. Chang, Anirban Mukherjee
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
Artificial intelligence (AI) technology seeks to emulate humans. One aspect is AI-synthesized voices, used in voice assistants (such as Amazon Alexa, Apple Siri, and Google Assistant) to assistive technologies (such as voiceover narration in product videos). For example, there are currently more than 3.25 billion voice assistants; a number that is expected to touch about 8 billion by next year (i.e., 2023) (Statista 2022). With the extensive availability and enhanced accuracy of AI-synthesized voices, consumer research is starting to examine the impact of AI-synthesized voices on consumer information processing and decision making. The extant literature, however, is relatively limited because …

This paper investigates the intersection of generative AI, Large Language Models (LLM), and robotics. Exemplified by systems like ChatGPT and technological marvels such as Ameca the Robot, the combination of technologies will allow humans to transcend the limitations of death. Through digital necromancy, a practice encompassing the technological resurrection of deceased individuals, the ability to not only passively see recordings of loved ones but to interact with them is made possible, leading to ethical and psychological considerations. Therefore, examining these trends extends into the motives underlying engagement with both incorporeal and corporeal reproductions of individuals, with reasons ranging from memory …
Accelerating Machine Learning Inference For Satellite Component Feature Extraction Using Fpgas., Andrew Ekblad
Accelerating Machine Learning Inference For Satellite Component Feature Extraction Using Fpgas., Andrew Ekblad
Theses and Dissertations
Running computer vision algorithms requires complex devices with lots of computing power, these types of devices are not well suited for space deployment. The harsh radiation environment and limited power budgets have hindered the ability of running advanced computer vision algorithms in space. This problem makes running an on-orbit servicing detection algorithm very difficult. This work proposes using a low powered FPGA to accelerate the computer vision algorithms that enable satellite component feature extraction. This work uses AMD/Xilinx’s Zynq SoC and DPU IP to run model inference. Experiments in this work centered around improving model post processing by creating implementations …
Data-Centric Image Super-Resolution In Magnetic Resonance Imaging: Challenges And Opportunities, Mamata Shrestha
Data-Centric Image Super-Resolution In Magnetic Resonance Imaging: Challenges And Opportunities, Mamata Shrestha
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Super-resolution has emerged as a crucial research topic in the field of Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) where it plays an important role in understanding and analysis of complex, qualitative, and quantitative characteristics of tissues at high resolutions. Deep learning techniques have been successful in achieving state-of-the-art results for super-resolution. These deep learning-based methods heavily rely on a substantial amount of data. Additionally, they require a pair of low-resolution and high-resolution images for supervised training which is often unavailable. Particularly in MRI super-resolution, it is often impossible to have low-resolution and high-resolution training image pairs. To overcome this, existing methods for …

Commercial motor vehicle (CMV) safety is a major concern in the United States, including the District of Columbia (DC), where CMVs make up 15% of traffic. This research uses a comprehensive approach, combining statistical analysis and machine learning techniques, to investigate the impact of road pavement conditions on CMV accidents. The study integrates traffic crash data from the Traffic Accident Reporting and Analysis Systems Version 2.0 (TARAS2) database with pavement condition data provided by the District Department of Transportation (DDOT). Data spanning from 2016 to 2020 was collected and analyzed, focusing on CMV routes in DC. The analysis employs binary …
Forecasting Traffic Speed During Daytime From Google Street View Images Using Deep Learning, Junfeng Jiao, Huihai Wang
Forecasting Traffic Speed During Daytime From Google Street View Images Using Deep Learning, Junfeng Jiao, Huihai Wang
Research Collection College of Integrative Studies
Traffic forecasting plays an important role in urban planning. Deep learning methods outperform traditional traffic flow forecasting models because of their ability to capture spatiotemporal characteristics of traffic conditions. However, these methods require high-quality historical traffic data, which can be both difficult to acquire and non-comprehensive, making it hard to predict traffic flows at the city scale. To resolve this problem, we implemented a deep learning method, SceneGCN, to forecast traffic speed at the city scale. The model involves two steps: firstly, scene features are extracted from Google Street View (GSV) images for each road segment using pretrained Resnet18 models. …

(Un)Likelihood Training For Interpretable Embedding, Jiaxin Wu, Chong-Wah Ngo, Wing-Kwong Chan, Zhijian Hou
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Cross-modal representation learning has become a new normal for bridging the semantic gap between text and visual data. Learning modality agnostic representations in a continuous latent space, however, is often treated as a black-box data-driven training process. It is well known that the effectiveness of representation learning depends heavily on the quality and scale of training data. For video representation learning, having a complete set of labels that annotate the full spectrum of video content for training is highly difficult, if not impossible. These issues, black-box training and dataset bias, make representation learning practically challenging to be deployed for video …

The Use Of Deception In Dementia-Care Robots: Should Robots Tell "White Lies" To Limit Emotional Distress?, Samuel R. Cox, Grace Cheong, Wei Tsang Ooi
ROSA Journal Articles and Publications
With projections of ageing populations and increasing rates of dementia, there is need for professional caregivers. Assistive robots have been proposed as a solution to this, as they can assist people both physically and socially. However, caregivers often need to use acts of deception (such as misdirection or white lies) in order to ensure necessary care is provided while limiting negative impacts on the cared-for such as emotional distress or loss of dignity. We discuss such use of deception, and contextualise their use within robotics.

The use of modern Large Language Models (LLMs) as chatbots still has some problems such as hallucinations and lack of empathy. Identifying these issues can help improve chatbot performance. The community has been continually iterating on reference-free dialogue evaluation methods based on large language models (LLMs) that can be readily applied. However, many of these LLM-based metrics require selecting specific datasets and developing specialized training tasks for different evaluation dimensions (e.g., coherence, informative). The developing step can be time-consuming and may need to be repeated for new evaluation dimensions. To enable efficient and flexible adaptation to diverse needs of dialogue …

Offline Rl With Discrete Proxy Representations For Generalizability In Pomdps, Pengjie Gu, Xinyu Cai, Dong Xing, Xinrun Wang, Mengchen Zhao, Bo An
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Offline Reinforcement Learning (RL) has demonstrated promising results in various applications by learning policies from previously collected datasets, reducing the need for online exploration and interactions. However, real-world scenarios usually involve partial observability, which brings crucial challenges of the deployment of offline RL methods: i) the policy trained on data with full observability is not robust against the masked observations during execution, and ii) the information of which parts of observations are masked is usually unknown during training. In order to address these challenges, we present Offline RL with DiscrEte pRoxy representations (ORDER), a probabilistic framework which leverages novel state …

Ad hoc teamwork requires an agent to cooperate with unknown teammates without prior coordination. Many works propose to abstract teammate instances into high-level representation of types and then pre-train the best response for each type. However, most of them do not consider the distribution of teammate instances within a type. This could expose the agent to the hidden risk of type confounding. In the worst case, the best response for an abstract teammate type could be the worst response for all specific instances of that type. This work addresses the issue from the lens of causal inference. We first theoretically …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
In the vital context of education, the application of artificial intelligence (AI) to assessments necessitates a nuanced examination of the boundaries between ethically permissible and impermissible practices. In this chapter, the authors applied a systematic literature mapping methodology to scour extant research, so as to holistically structure the landscape into explicit topical research clusters. Through topic modelling and network analyses, research mapped key ethical principles to different assessment phases in a triadic ontological framework. The chapter looks to provide researchers and practitioners the insights into the ethical challenges that exist across an end-to-end assessment pipeline.

The chatbot workshop provides non-STEM students with an opportunity to acquire basic skills to build a chatbot prototype using the ‘Dialogflow’ program. The workshop and the experiential learning activity are designed to impart conversation and user-centric design know how and know why to students. A key didactical aspect which informs the design and flow …
Estimating Propensity For Causality-Based Recommendation Without Exposure Data, Zhongzhou Liu, Yuan Fang, Min Wu
Estimating Propensity For Causality-Based Recommendation Without Exposure Data, Zhongzhou Liu, Yuan Fang, Min Wu
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Causality-based recommendation systems focus on the causal effects of user-item interactions resulting from item exposure (i.e., which items are recommended or exposed to the user), as opposed to conventional correlation-based recommendation. They are gaining popularity due to their multi-sided benefits to users, sellers and platforms alike. However, existing causality-based recommendation methods require additional input in the form of exposure data and/or propensity scores (i.e., the probability of exposure) for training. Such data, crucial for modeling causality in recommendation, are often not available in real-world situations due to technical or privacy constraints. In this paper, we bridge the gap by proposing …

Unprecedented demand for data science professionals in the industry has led to many educational institutions launching new data science courses. It is however imperative that students of data science programmes learn through execution of real-world, authentic projects on top of acquiring foundational knowledge on the basics of data science. In the process of working on authentic, real-world projects, students not only create new knowledge but also learn to solve open, sophisticated, and ill-structured problems in an inter-disciplinary fashion. In this paper, we detailed our approach to design a data science curriculum premised on learners solving authentic data science problems sourced …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Data visualization is a powerful tool for exploring and communicating insights in various domains. To automate visualization choice for datasets, a task known as visualization recommendation has been proposed. Various machine-learning-based approaches have been developed for this purpose, but they often require a large corpus of dataset-visualization pairs for training and lack natural explanations for their results. To address this research gap, we propose LLM4Vis, a novel ChatGPT-based prompting approach to perform visualization recommendation and return human-like explanations using very few demonstration examples. Our approach involves feature description, demonstration example selection, explanation generation, demonstration example construction, and inference steps. To …

Rome: Evaluating Pre-Trained Vision-Language Models On Reasoning Beyond Visual Common Sense, Kankan Zhou, Eason Lai, Au Wei Bin Yeong, Kyriakos Mouratidis, Jing Jiang
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Humans possess a strong capability for reasoning beyond common sense. For example, given an unconventional image of a goldfish laying on the table next to an empty fishbowl, a human would effortlessly determine that the fish is not inside the fishbowl. The case, however, may be different for a vision-language model, whose reasoning could gravitate towards the common scenario that the fish is inside the bowl, despite the visual input. In this paper, we introduce a novel probing dataset named ROME (reasoning beyond commonsense knowledge) to evaluate whether the state-of-the-art pre-trained vision-language models have the reasoning capability to correctly interpret …

Robust Prompt Optimization For Large Language Models Against Distribution Shifts, Moxin Li, Wenjie Wang, Fuli Feng, Yixin Cao, Jizhi Zhang, Tat-Seng Chua
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Large Language Model (LLM) has demonstrated significant ability in various Natural Language Processing tasks. However, their effectiveness is highly dependent on the phrasing of the task prompt, leading to research on automatic prompt optimization using labeled task data. We reveal that these prompt optimization techniques are vulnerable to distribution shifts such as subpopulation shifts, which are common for LLMs in real-world scenarios such as customer reviews analysis. In this light, we propose a new problem of robust prompt optimization for LLMs against distribution shifts, which requires the prompt optimized over the labeled source group can simultaneously generalize to an unlabeled …

Wsdms: Debunk Fake News Via Weakly Supervised Detection Of Misinforming Sentences With Contextualized Social Wisdom, Ruichao Yang, Wei Gao, Jing Ma, Hongzhan Lin, Zhiwei Yang
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
In recent years, we witness the explosion of false and unconfirmed information (i.e., rumors) that went viral on social media and shocked the public. Rumors can trigger versatile, mostly controversial stance expressions among social media users. Rumor verification and stance detection are different yet relevant tasks. Fake news debunking primarily focuses on determining the truthfulness of news articles, which oversimplifies the issue as fake news often combines elements of both truth and falsehood. Thus, it becomes crucial to identify specific instances of misinformation within the articles. In this research, we investigate a novel task in the field of fake news …
Truncated Affinity Maximization: One-Class Homophily Modeling For Graph Anomaly Detection, Hezhe Qiao, Guansong Pang
Truncated Affinity Maximization: One-Class Homophily Modeling For Graph Anomaly Detection, Hezhe Qiao, Guansong Pang
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
We reveal a one-class homophily phenomenon, which is one prevalent property we find empirically in real-world graph anomaly detection (GAD) datasets, i.e., normal nodes tend to have strong connection/affinity with each other, while the homophily in abnormal nodes is significantly weaker than normal nodes. However, this anomaly-discriminative property is ignored by existing GAD methods that are typically built using a conventional anomaly detection objective, such as data reconstruction. In this work, we explore this property to introduce a novel unsupervised anomaly scoring measure for GAD – local node affinity – that assigns a larger anomaly score to nodes that are …

A Poisson-Based Distribution Learning Framework For Short-Term Prediction Of Food Delivery Demand Ranges, Jian Liang, Jintao Ke, Hai Wang, Hongbo Ye, Jinjun Tang
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
The COVID-19 pandemic has caused a dramatic change in the demand composition of restaurants and, at the same time, catalyzed on-demand food delivery (OFD) services—such as DoorDash, Grubhub, and Uber Eats—to a large extent. With massive amounts of data on customers, drivers, and merchants, OFD platforms can achieve higher efficiency with better strategic and operational decisions; these include dynamic pricing, order bundling and dispatching, and driver relocation. Some of these decisions, and especially proactive decisions in real time, rely on accurate and reliable short-term predictions of demand ranges or distributions. In this paper, we develop a Poisson-based distribution prediction (PDP) …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Various recommender systems for mobile tourism have been developed over the years. However, most of these recommender systems tend to overwhelm users with too much information and may not be personalised to user preferences. In this paper, we introduce ExploreLah, a personalised and smart trip planner for exploring Point of Interests (POIs) in Singapore. The user preferences are categorised into five groups: shopping, art & culture, outdoor activity, adventure, and nightlife. The problem is considered as the Team Orienteering Problem with Time Windows. The algorithm is developed to generate itineraries. Simulated experiments using test cases were performed to evaluate and …

As computing projects increasingly become a core component of undergraduate courses, effective mentorship is crucial for supporting students' learning and development. Our study examines the adoption of ChatGPT as a mentor for undergraduate computing projects. It explores the impact of ChatGPT mentorship, specifically, skills development, and mentor responsiveness, i.e., ChatGPT's responsiveness to students' needs and requests. We utilize PLS-SEM to investigate the interrelationships between different factors and develop a model that captures their contribution to the effectiveness of ChatGPT as a mentor. The findings suggest that mentor responsiveness and technical/design support are key factors for the adoption of AI tools …

Transformer-Based Multi-Task Learning For Crisis Actionability Extraction, Yuhao Zhang, Siaw Ling Lo, Phyo Yi Win Myint
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Social media has become a valuable information source for crisis informatics. While various methods were proposed to extract relevant information during a crisis, their adoption by field practitioners remains low. In recent fieldwork, actionable information was identified as the primary information need for crisis responders and a key component in bridging the significant gap in existing crisis management tools. In this paper, we proposed a Crisis Actionability Extraction System for filtering, classification, phrase extraction, severity estimation, localization, and aggregation of actionable information altogether. We examined the effectiveness of transformer-based LSTM-CRF architecture in Twitter-related sequence tagging tasks and simultaneously extracted actionable …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Deep learning (DL) models are trained on sampled data, where the distribution of training data differs from that of real-world data (i.e., the distribution shift), which reduces the model's robustness. Various testing techniques have been proposed, including distribution-unaware and distribution-aware methods. However, distribution-unaware testing lacks effectiveness by not explicitly considering the distribution of test cases and may generate redundant errors (within same distribution). Distribution-aware testing techniques primarily focus on generating test cases that follow the training distribution, missing out-of-distribution data that may also be valid and should be considered in the testing process. In this paper, we propose a novel …

M2-Cnn: A Macro-Micro Model For Taxi Demand Prediction, Shih-Fen Cheng, Prabod Manuranga Rathnayaka Mudiyanselage
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
In this paper, we introduce a macro-micro model for predicting taxi demands. Our model is a composite deep learning model that integrates multiple views. Our network design specifically incorporates the spatial and temporal dependency of taxi or ride-hailing demand, unlike previous papers that also utilize deep learning models. In addition, we propose a hybrid of Long Short-Term Memory Networks and Temporal Convolutional Networks that incorporates real world time series with long sequences. Finally, we introduce a microscopic component that attempts to extract insights revealed by roaming vacant taxis. In our study, we demonstrate that our approach is competitive against a …

Designing Large-Scale Intelligent Collaborative Platform For Freight Forwarders, Pang Jin Tan, Shih-Fen Cheng, Richard Chen
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
In this paper, we propose to design a large-scale intelligent collaborative platform for freight forwarders. This platform is based on a mathematical programming formulation and an efficient solution approach. Forwarders are middlemen who procure container capacities from carriers and sell them to shippers to serve their transport requests. However, due to demand uncertainty, they often either over-procure or under-procure capacities. We address this with our proposed platform where forwarders can collaborate and share capacities, allowing one's transport requests to be potentially shipped on another forwarder's container. The result is lower total costs for all participating forwarders. The collaboration can be …

Flowpg: Action-Constrained Policy Gradient With Normalizing Flows, Brahmanage Janaka Chathuranga Thilakarathna, Jiajing Ling, Akshat Kumar
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Action-constrained reinforcement learning (ACRL) is a popular approach for solving safety-critical and resource-allocation related decision making problems. A major challenge in ACRL is to ensure agent taking a valid action satisfying constraints in each RL step. Commonly used approach of using a projection layer on top of the policy network requires solving an optimization program which can result in longer training time, slow convergence, and zero gradient problem. To address this, first we use a normalizing flow model to learn an invertible, differentiable mapping between the feasible action space and the support of a simple distribution on a latent variable, …
