Counterfactual Zero-Shot And Open-Set Visual Recognition, Zhongqi Yue, Tan Wang, Qianru Sun, Xian-Sheng Hua, Hanwang Zhang Jun 2021

Counterfactual Zero-Shot And Open-Set Visual Recognition, Zhongqi Yue, Tan Wang, Qianru Sun, Xian-Sheng Hua, Hanwang Zhang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

We present a novel counterfactual framework for both Zero-Shot Learning (ZSL) and Open-Set Recognition (OSR), whose common challenge is generalizing to the unseen-classes by only training on the seen-classes. Our idea stems from the observation that the generated samples for unseen-classes are often out of the true distribution, which causes severe recognition rate imbalance between the seen-class (high) and unseen-class (low). We show that the key reason is that the generation is not Counterfactual Faithful, and thus we propose a faithful one, whose generation is from the sample-specific counterfactual question: What would the sample look like, if we set its …

Cache-Efficient Fork-Processing Patterns On Large Graphs, Shengliang Lu, Shixuan Sun, Johns Paul, Yuchen Li, Bingsheng He Jun 2021

Cache-Efficient Fork-Processing Patterns On Large Graphs, Shengliang Lu, Shixuan Sun, Johns Paul, Yuchen Li, Bingsheng He

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

As large graph processing emerges, we observe a costly fork-processing pattern (FPP) that is common in many graph algorithms. The unique feature of the FPP is that it launches many independent queries from different source vertices on the same graph. For example, an algorithm in analyzing the network community profile can execute Personalized PageRanks that start from tens of thousands of source vertices at the same time. We study the efficiency of handling FPPs in state-of-the-art graph processing systems on multi-core architectures, including Ligra, Gemini, and GraphIt. We find that those systems suffer from severe cache miss penalty because of …

Self-Adaptive Graph Traversal On Gpus, Mo Sha, Yuchen Li, Kian-Lee Tan Jun 2021

Self-Adaptive Graph Traversal On Gpus, Mo Sha, Yuchen Li, Kian-Lee Tan

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

GPU’s massive computing power offers unprecedented opportunities to enable large graph analysis. Existing studies proposed various preprocessing approaches that convert the input graphs into dedicated structures for GPU-based optimizations. However, these dedicated approaches incur significant preprocessing costs as well as weak programmability to build general graph applications. In this paper, we introduce SAGE, a self-adaptive graph traversal on GPUs, which is free from preprocessing and operates on ubiquitous graph representations directly. We propose Tiled Partitioning and Resident Tile Stealing to fully exploit the computing power of GPUs in a runtime and self-adaptive manner. We also propose Sampling-based Reordering to further …

First Train Timetabling And Bus Service Bridging In Intermodal Bus-And-Train Transit Networks, Liujiang Kang, Hao Li, Huijun Sun, Jianjun Wu, Zhiguang Cao, Nsabimana Buhigiro Jun 2021

First Train Timetabling And Bus Service Bridging In Intermodal Bus-And-Train Transit Networks, Liujiang Kang, Hao Li, Huijun Sun, Jianjun Wu, Zhiguang Cao, Nsabimana Buhigiro

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Subway system is the main mode of transportation for city dwellers and is a quite signif-icant backbone to a city's operations. One of the challenges of subway network operation is the scheduling of the first trains each morning and its impact on transfers. To deal with this challenge, some cities (e.g. Beijing) use bus 'bridging' services, temporarily substitut -ing segments of the subway network. The present paper optimally identifies when to start each train and bus bridging service in an intermodal transit network. Starting from a mixed integer nonlinear programming model for the first train timetabling problem, we linearize and …

Projecting Your View Attentively: Monocular Road Scene Layout Estimation Via Cross-View Transformation, Weixiang Yang, Qi Li, Wenxi Liu, Yuanlong Yu, Yuexin Ma, Shengfeng He, Jia Pan Jun 2021

Projecting Your View Attentively: Monocular Road Scene Layout Estimation Via Cross-View Transformation, Weixiang Yang, Qi Li, Wenxi Liu, Yuanlong Yu, Yuexin Ma, Shengfeng He, Jia Pan

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

HD map reconstruction is crucial for autonomous driving. LiDAR-based methods are limited due to the deployed expensive sensors and time-consuming computation. Camera-based methods usually need to separately perform road segmentation and view transformation, which often causes distortion and the absence of content. To push the limits of the technology, we present a novel framework that enables reconstructing a local map formed by road layout and vehicle occupancy in the bird's-eye view given a front-view monocular image only. In particular, we propose a cross-view transformation module, which takes the constraint of cycle consistency between views into account and makes full use …

Reciprocal Transformations For Unsupervised Video Object Segmentation, Sucheng Ren, Wenxi Liu, Yongtuo Liu, Haoxin Chen, Guoqiang Han, Shengfeng He Jun 2021

Reciprocal Transformations For Unsupervised Video Object Segmentation, Sucheng Ren, Wenxi Liu, Yongtuo Liu, Haoxin Chen, Guoqiang Han, Shengfeng He

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Unsupervised video object segmentation (UVOS) aims at segmenting the primary objects in videos without any human intervention. Due to the lack of prior knowledge about the primary objects, identifying them from videos is the major challenge of UVOS. Previous methods often regard the moving objects as primary ones and rely on optical flow to capture the motion cues in videos, but the flow information alone is insufficient to distinguish the primary objects from the background objects that move together. This is because, when the noisy motion features are combined with the appearance features, the localization of the primary objects is …

Learning From The Master: Distilling Cross-Modal Advanced Knowledge For Lip Reading, Sucheng Ren, Yong Du, Jianming Lv, Guoqiang Han, Shengfeng He Jun 2021

Learning From The Master: Distilling Cross-Modal Advanced Knowledge For Lip Reading, Sucheng Ren, Yong Du, Jianming Lv, Guoqiang Han, Shengfeng He

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Lip reading aims to predict the spoken sentences from silent lip videos. Due to the fact that such a vision task usually performs worse than its counterpart speech recognition, one potential scheme is to distill knowledge from a teacher pretrained by audio signals. However, the latent domain gap between the cross-modal data could lead to a learning ambiguity and thus limits the performance of lip reading. In this paper, we propose a novel collaborative framework for lip reading, and two aspects of issues are considered: 1) the teacher should understand bi-modal knowledge to possibly bridge the inherent cross-modal gap; 2) …

Discovering Interpretable Latent Space Directions Of Gans Beyond Binary Attributes, Huiting Yang, Liangyu Chai, Qiang Wen, Shuang Zhao, Zixun Sun, Shengfeng He Jun 2021

Discovering Interpretable Latent Space Directions Of Gans Beyond Binary Attributes, Huiting Yang, Liangyu Chai, Qiang Wen, Shuang Zhao, Zixun Sun, Shengfeng He

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Generative adversarial networks (GANs) learn to map noise latent vectors to high- fidelity image outputs. It is found that the input latent space shows semantic correlations with the output image space. Recent works aim to interpret the latent space and discover meaningful directions that correspond to human interpretable image transformations. However, these methods either rely on explicit scores of attributes (e.g., memorability) or are restricted to binary ones (e.g., gender), which largely limits the applicability of editing tasks, especially for free- form artistic tasks like style/anime editing. In this paper, we propose an adversarial method, AdvStyle, for discovering interpretable directions …

Delving Deep Into Many-To-Many Attention For Few-Shot Video Object Segmentation, Haoxin Chen, Hanjie Wu, Nanxuan Zhao, Sucheng Ren, Shengfeng He Jun 2021

Delving Deep Into Many-To-Many Attention For Few-Shot Video Object Segmentation, Haoxin Chen, Hanjie Wu, Nanxuan Zhao, Sucheng Ren, Shengfeng He

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

This paper tackles the task of Few-Shot Video Object Segmentation (FSVOS), i.e., segmenting objects in the query videos with certain class specified in a few labeled support images. The key is to model the relationship between the query videos and the support images for propagating the object information. This is a many-to-many problem and often relies on full-rank attention, which is computationally intensive. In this paper, we propose a novel Domain Agent Network (DAN), breaking down the full-rank attention into two smaller ones. We consider one single frame of the query video as the domain agent, bridging between the support …

Sequence-To-Sequence Learning For Automated Software Artifact Generation, Zhongxin Liu, Xin Xia, David Lo Jun 2021

Sequence-To-Sequence Learning For Automated Software Artifact Generation, Zhongxin Liu, Xin Xia, David Lo

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

During the development and maintenance of a software system, developers produce many digital artifacts besides source code, e.g., requirement documents, code comments, change history, bug reports, etc. Such artifacts are valuable for developers to understand and maintain the software system. However, creating software artifacts can be burdensome and developers sometimes neglect to write and maintain important artifacts. This problem can be alleviated by software artifact generation tools, which can assist developers in creating software artifacts and automatically generate artifacts to replace existing empty ones. The focus of this chapter is automated software artifact generation (hereon, SAG) using seq2seq learning. This …

Ganmut: Learning Interpretable Conditional Space For A Gamut Of Emotions, S. D'Apolito, D.P. Paundel, Zhiwu Huang, A.R. Vergara, Gool L. Van Jun 2021

Ganmut: Learning Interpretable Conditional Space For A Gamut Of Emotions, S. D'Apolito, D.P. Paundel, Zhiwu Huang, A.R. Vergara, Gool L. Van

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Humans can communicate emotions through a plethora of facial expressions, each with its own intensity, nuances and ambiguities. The generation of such variety by means of conditional GANs is limited to the expressions encoded in the used label system. These limitations are caused either due to burdensome labeling demand or the confounded label space. On the other hand, learning from inexpensive and intuitive basic categorical emotion labels leads to limited emotion variability. In this paper, we propose a novel GAN-based framework which learns an expressive and interpretable conditional space (usable as a label space) of emotions, instead of conditioning on …

When Program Analysis Meets Bytecode Search: Targeted And Efficient Inter-Procedural Analysis Of Modern Android Apps In Backdroid, Daoyuan Wu, Debin Gao, Robert H. Deng, Rocky Chang Jun 2021

When Program Analysis Meets Bytecode Search: Targeted And Efficient Inter-Procedural Analysis Of Modern Android Apps In Backdroid, Daoyuan Wu, Debin Gao, Robert H. Deng, Rocky Chang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Widely-used Android static program analysis tools,e.g., Amandroid and FlowDroid, perform the whole-app interprocedural analysis that is comprehensive but fundamentallydifficult to handle modern (large) apps. The average app size hasincreased three to four times over five years. In this paper, weexplore a new paradigm of targeted inter-procedural analysis thatcan skip irrelevant code and focus only on the flows of securitysensitive sink APIs. To this end, we propose a technique calledon-the-fly bytecode search, which searches the disassembled appbytecode text just in time when a caller needs to be located. In thisway, it guides targeted (and backward) inter-procedural analysisstep by step until reaching …

Expressive Bilateral Access Control For Internet-Of-Things In Cloud-Fog Computing, Shengmin Xu, Jianting Ning, Jinhua Ma, Xinyi Huang, Hwee Hwa Pang, Robert H. Deng Jun 2021

Expressive Bilateral Access Control For Internet-Of-Things In Cloud-Fog Computing, Shengmin Xu, Jianting Ning, Jinhua Ma, Xinyi Huang, Hwee Hwa Pang, Robert H. Deng

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

As a versatile system architecture, cloud-fog Internet-of-Things (IoT) enables multiple resource-constrained devices to communicate and collaborate with each other. By outsourcing local data and immigrating expensive workloads to cloud service providers and fog nodes (FNs), resource-constrained devices can enjoy data services with low latency and minimal cost. To protect data security and privacy in the untrusted cloud-fog environment, many cryptographic mechanisms have been invented. Unfortunately, most of them are impractical when directly applied to cloud-fog IoT computing, mainly due to the large number of resource-constrained end-devices (EDs). In this paper, we present a secure cloud-fog IoT data sharing system with …

Iquant: Interactive Quantitative Investment Using Sparse Regression Factors, Xuanwu Yue, Qiao Gu, Deyun Wang, Huamin Qu, Yong Wang Jun 2021

Iquant: Interactive Quantitative Investment Using Sparse Regression Factors, Xuanwu Yue, Qiao Gu, Deyun Wang, Huamin Qu, Yong Wang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The model-based investing using financial factors is evolving as a principal method for quantitative investment. The main challenge lies in the selection of effective factors towards excess market returns. Existing approaches, either hand-picking factors or applying feature selection algorithms, do not orchestrate both human knowledge and computational power. This paper presents iQUANT, an interactive quantitative investment system that assists equity traders to quickly spot promising financial factors from initial recommendations suggested by algorithmic models, and conduct a joint refinement of factors and stocks for investment portfolio composition. We work closely with professional traders to assemble empirical characteristics of “good” factors …

While the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic wreaked havoc across the globe, we have witnessed substantial mis- and disinformation regarding various aspects of the disease. We conducted a cross-sectional study using a self-administered questionnaire for the general public (recruited via social media) and healthcare workers (recruited via email) from the State of Qatar, and the Middle East and North Africa region to understand the knowledge of and anxiety levels around COVID-19 (April–June 2020) during the early stage of the pandemic. The final dataset used for the analysis comprised of 1658 questionnaires (53.0% of 3129 received questionnaires; 1337 [80.6%] from the …

Hpress: A Hardware-Enhanced Proxy Re-Encryption Scheme Using Secure Enclave, Fan Zhang, Ziyuan Liang, Cong Zuo, Jun Shao, Jianting Ning, Jun Sun, Joseph K. Liu, Yibao Bao Jun 2021

Hpress: A Hardware-Enhanced Proxy Re-Encryption Scheme Using Secure Enclave, Fan Zhang, Ziyuan Liang, Cong Zuo, Jun Shao, Jianting Ning, Jun Sun, Joseph K. Liu, Yibao Bao

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Proxy re-encryption (PRE) allows a proxy to transform one ciphertext to another under different encryption keys while keeping the underlying plaintext secret. Because of the ciphertext transformability of PRE, there are many potential private communicating applications of this feature. However, existing PRE schemes are not as full-fledged as expected. The lack of necessary features makes them hard to apply in real-world scenarios. So far, there does not exist a unidirectional multihop PRE scheme with constant decryption efficiency and constant ciphertext size without extensions. Impractical performance and weak scalability also hinder PRE from most real-world applications. In this work, we present …

Sql-Like Interpretable Interactive Video Search, Jiaxin Wu, Phuong Anh Nguyen, Zhixin Ma, Chong-Wah Ngo Jun 2021

Sql-Like Interpretable Interactive Video Search, Jiaxin Wu, Phuong Anh Nguyen, Zhixin Ma, Chong-Wah Ngo

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Concept-free search, which embeds text and video signals in a joint space for retrieval, appears to be a new state-of-the-art. However, this new search paradigm suffers from two limitations. First, the search result is unpredictable and not interpretable. Second, the embedded features are in high-dimensional space hindering real-time indexing and search. In this paper, we present a new implementation of the Vireo video search system (Vireo-VSS), which employs a dual-task model to index each video segment with an embedding feature in a low dimension and a concept list for retrieval. The concept list serves as a reference to interpret its …

Proving Non-Termination By Program Reversal, Krishnendu Chatterjee, Ehsan Kafshdar Goharshady, Petr Novotný, Dorde Zikelic Jun 2021

Proving Non-Termination By Program Reversal, Krishnendu Chatterjee, Ehsan Kafshdar Goharshady, Petr Novotný, Dorde Zikelic

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

We present a new approach to proving non-termination of non-deterministic integer programs. Our technique is rather simple but efficient. It relies on a purely syntactic reversal of the program's transition system followed by a constraint-based invariant synthesis with constraints coming from both the original and the reversed transition system. The latter task is performed by a simple call to an off-the-shelf SMT-solver, which allows us to leverage the latest advances in SMT-solving. Moreover, our method offers a combination of features not present (as a whole) in previous approaches: it handles programs with non-determinism, provides relative completeness guarantees and supports programs …

Prediction Of Sleep Quality In Live-Alone Diabetic Seniors Using Unobtrusive In-Home Sensors, Barry Nuqoba, Hwee-Pink Tan

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Diabetes, a chronic disease that occurs when the pancreas does not produce enough insulin or when the body cannot effectively utilize its insulin, is increasingly recognized as a significant health burden and affects many older adults. Poor sleep quality in diabetic seniors worsens the diabetes condition, but most seniors are tend to regard poor sleep quality as a usual event and do not seek treatment. This study aims to detect poor sleep quality in diabetic seniors through passive in-home monitoring to inform intervention (e.g., seeking diagnosis and treatment) to improve the physical and mental health of diabetic seniors. We derive …

Virtual Reality For Hazard Mitigation And Community Resilience: An Interdisciplinary Collaboration With Community Engagement To Enhance Risk Awareness, N. J. Stone, G. Yan, Fiona Fui-Hoon Nah, C. Sabharwal, K. Angle, F. E. Hatch, S. Runnels, V. Brown, G. M. Schoor, C. Engelbrecht Jun 2021

Virtual Reality For Hazard Mitigation And Community Resilience: An Interdisciplinary Collaboration With Community Engagement To Enhance Risk Awareness, N. J. Stone, G. Yan, Fiona Fui-Hoon Nah, C. Sabharwal, K. Angle, F. E. Hatch, S. Runnels, V. Brown, G. M. Schoor, C. Engelbrecht

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

To achieve community resilience and mitigate the consequences of natural hazards, community officials must balance competing priorities for local resources and funding. Besides the challenge of dealing with multiple competing priorities, community officials face another challenge: low risk awareness of natural hazards by the public and other stakeholders. Considering that virtual reality (VR) has been used to enhance learning and to change attitudes and behaviors, animating natural hazards in VR has the potential to enhance stakeholders’ (e.g., the public, local/state/federal governments, insurance agencies, and property owners) risk awareness. Informed stakeholders make better decisions related to protective action. Therefore, we propose …

Marrying Top-K With Skyline Queries: Relaxing The Preference Input While Producing Output Of Controllable Size, Kyriakos Mouratidis, Keming Li, Bo Tang Jun 2021

Marrying Top-K With Skyline Queries: Relaxing The Preference Input While Producing Output Of Controllable Size, Kyriakos Mouratidis, Keming Li, Bo Tang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The two most common paradigms to identify records of preference in a multi-objective setting rely either on dominance (e.g., the skyline operator) or on a utility function defined over the records’ attributes (typically, using a top- query). Despite their proliferation, each of them has its own palpable drawbacks. Motivated by these drawbacks, we identify three hard requirements for practical decision support, namely, personalization, controllable output size, and flexibility in preference specification. With these requirements as a guide, we combine elements from both paradigms and propose two new operators, ORD and ORU. We perform a qualitative study to demonstrate how they …

Applying Facial Emotion Recognition To Usability Evaluations To Reduce Analysis Time, Gavin Kam Chao Jun 2021

Applying Facial Emotion Recognition To Usability Evaluations To Reduce Analysis Time, Gavin Kam Chao

Master's Theses

Usability testing is an important part of product design that offers developers insight into a product’s ability to help users achieve their goals. Despite the usefulness of usability testing, human usability evaluations are costly and time-intensive processes. Developing methods to reduce the time and costs of usability evaluations is important for organizations to improve the usability of their products without expensive investments. One prospective solution to this is the application of facial emotion recognition to automate the collection of qualitative metrics normally identified by human usability evaluators.

In this paper, facial emotion recognition (FER) was applied to mock usability recordings …

An Analysis Of Real-Time Ray Tracing Techniques Using The Vulkan® Explicit Api, Elleis C. Souza Jun 2021

An Analysis Of Real-Time Ray Tracing Techniques Using The Vulkan® Explicit Api, Elleis C. Souza

Master's Theses

In computer graphics applications, the choice and implementation of a rendering technique is crucial when targeting real-time performance. Traditionally, rasterization-based approaches have dominated the real-time sector. Other algorithms were simply too slow to compete on consumer graphics hardware. With the addition of hardware support for ray-intersection calculations on modern GPUs, hybrid ray tracing/rasterization and purely ray tracing approaches have become possible in real-time as well. Industry real-time graphics applications, namely games, have been exploring these different rendering techniques with great levels of success. The addition of ray tracing into the graphics developer’s toolkit has without a doubt increased what level …

Modeling And Solving The Outsourcing Risk Management Problem In Multi-Echelon Supply Chains, Arian A. Nahangi Jun 2021

Modeling And Solving The Outsourcing Risk Management Problem In Multi-Echelon Supply Chains, Arian A. Nahangi

Master's Theses

Worldwide globalization has made supply chains more vulnerable to risk factors, increasing the associated costs of outsourcing goods. Outsourcing is highly beneficial for any company that values building upon its core competencies, but the emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic and other crises have exposed significant vulnerabilities within supply chains. These disruptions forced a shift in the production of goods from outsourcing to domestic methods.

This paper considers a multi-echelon supply chain model with global and domestic raw material suppliers, manufacturing plants, warehouses, and markets. All levels within the supply chain network are evaluated from a holistic perspective, calculating a total …

Soarnet, Deep Learning Thermal Detection For Free Flight, Jake T. Tallman Jun 2021

Soarnet, Deep Learning Thermal Detection For Free Flight, Jake T. Tallman

Master's Theses

Thermals are regions of rising hot air formed on the ground through the warming of the surface by the sun. Thermals are commonly used by birds and glider pilots to extend flight duration, increase cross-country distance, and conserve energy. This kind of powerless flight using natural sources of lift is called soaring. Once a thermal is encountered, the pilot flies in circles to keep within the thermal, so gaining altitude before flying off to the next thermal and towards the destination. A single thermal can net a pilot thousands of feet of elevation gain, however estimating thermal locations is not …

Modeling The Spread Of Covid-19 Over Varied Contact Networks, Ryan L. Solorzano Jun 2021

Modeling The Spread Of Covid-19 Over Varied Contact Networks, Ryan L. Solorzano

Master's Theses

When attempting to mitigate the spread of an epidemic without the use of a vaccine, many measures may be made to dampen the spread of the disease such as physically distancing and wearing masks. The implementation of an effective test and quarantine strategy on a population has the potential to make a large impact on the spread of the disease as well. Testing and quarantining strategies become difficult when a portion of the population are asymptomatic spreaders of the disease. Additionally, a study has shown that randomly testing a portion of a population for asymptomatic individuals makes a small impact …

A Performance Survey Of Text-Based Sentiment Analysis Methods For Automating Usability Evaluations, Kelsi Van Damme Jun 2021

A Performance Survey Of Text-Based Sentiment Analysis Methods For Automating Usability Evaluations, Kelsi Van Damme

Master's Theses

Usability testing, or user experience (UX) testing, is increasingly recognized as an important part of the user interface design process. However, evaluating usability tests can be expensive in terms of time and resources and can lack consistency between human evaluators. This makes automation an appealing expansion or alternative to conventional usability techniques.

Early usability automation focused on evaluating human behavior through quantitative metrics but the explosion of opinion mining and sentiment analysis applications in recent decades has led to exciting new possibilities for usability evaluation methods.

This paper presents a survey of modern, open-source sentiment analyzers’ usefulness in extracting and …

Synthetic Aperture Radar Image Recognition Of Armored Vehicles, Christopher Szul, Torrey J. Wagner, Brent T. Langhals Jun 2021

Synthetic Aperture Radar Image Recognition Of Armored Vehicles, Christopher Szul, Torrey J. Wagner, Brent T. Langhals

Faculty Publications

Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) imagery is not affected by weather and allows for day-and-night observations, however it can be difficult to interpret. This work applies classical and neural network machine learning techniques to perform image classification of SAR imagery. The Moving and Stationary Target Acquisition and Recognition dataset from the Air Force Research Laboratory was used, which contained 2,987 total observations of the BMP-2, BTR-70, and T-72 vehicles. Using a 75%/25% train/test split, the classical model achieved an average multi-class image recognition accuracy of 70%, while a convolutional neural network was able to achieve a 97% accuracy with lower model …

Check Your Tech, Whose Responsibility Is It When Cyberharassment Occurs?, Dympna O'Sullivan, Damian Gordon, Michael Collins, Emma Murphy

Conference papers

Social media has become a dominant aspect of many people’s lives in many countries. Unfortunately that resulted in widespread issues of bullying and harassment. While frequently this harrassment is intentional, there have been occasions where automated processes have been inadvertently responsible for this sort of harassment. The software tools that allow people to harass others could have further features added to them to reduce the amount of harassment that occurs, but more often than not, where programmers are developing these systems then don’t anticipate the range of ways that these technologies will be used (this is called “consequence scanning”). The …

Is Twitter A Bad Place? The Responsibility That Social Media May Have Had In The 2021 Storming Of Capitol Hill., Ioannis Stavrakakis, Damian Gordon, Dympna O'Sullivan, Andrea Curley

Conference papers

The events of 6 th January 2021 in the United States of America, where rioters stormed the heart of their democracy, the US Capitol Complex (which houses their bicameral parliament) were shocking to see. The reasons for this riot were myriad, including to protest the outcomes of the presidential elections and two senate elections, as well as to prevent the counting that day of the electoral votes that formally certify the election result. These events will be analysed and reflected upon for years to come, and blame will be placed at many people’s doors, and inevitability one that has already …
