Lattice-Based Remote User Authentication From Reusable Fuzzy Signature, Yangguang Tian, Yingjiu Li, Robert H. Deng, Binanda Sengupta, Guomin Yang
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
In this paper, we introduce a new construction of reusable fuzzy signature based remote user authentication that is secure against quantum computers. We investigate the reusability of fuzzy signature, and we prove that the fuzzy signature schemes provide biometrics reusability (aka. reusable fuzzy signature). We define formal security models for the proposed construction, and we prove that it achieves user authenticity and user privacy. The proposed construction ensures: 1) a user’s biometrics can be securely reused in remote user authentication; 2) a third party having access to the communication channel between a user and the authentication server cannot identify the …

Real-world networks often exist with multiple views, where each view describes one type of interaction among a common set of nodes. For example, on a video-sharing network, while two user nodes are linked, if they have common favorite videos in one view, then they can also be linked in another view if they share common subscribers. Unlike traditional single-view networks, multiple views maintain different semantics to complement each other. In this article, we propose Multi-view collAborative Network Embedding (MANE), a multi-view network embedding approach to learn low-dimensional representations. Similar to existing studies, MANE hinges on diversity and collaboration—while diversity enables …

Catch You With Cache: Out-Of-Vm Introspection To Trace Malicious Executions, Chao Su, Xuhua Ding, Qinghai Zeng
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Out-of-VM introspection is an imperative part of security analysis. The legacy methods either modify the system, introducing enormous overhead, or rely heavily on hardware features, which are neither available nor practical in most cloud environments. In this paper, we propose a novel analysis method, named as Catcher, that utilizes CPU cache to perform out-of-VM introspection. Catcher does not make any modifications to the target program and its running environment, nor demands special hardware support. Implemented upon Linux KVM, it natively introspects the target's virtual memory. More importantly, it uses the cache-based side channel to infer the target control flow. To …

Internet of Things (IoT) is an integration of various technologies to provide technological enhancements. To enforce access control on low power operated battery constrained devices is a challenging issue in IoT scenarios. Attribute-based encryption (ABE) has emerged as an access control mechanism to allow users to encrypt and decrypt data based on an attributes policy. However, to accommodate the expressiveness of policy for practical application scenarios, attributes may be repeated in a policy. For certain policies, the attributes repetition cannot be avoided even after applying the boolean optimization techniques to attain an equivalent smaller length boolean formula. For such policies, …

The continuous contributions made by long time contributors (LTCs) are a key factor enabling open source software (OSS) projects to be successful and survival. We study Github as it has a large number of OSS projects and millions of contributors, which enables the study of the transition from newcomers to LTCs. In this paper, we investigate whether we can effectively predict newcomers in OSS projects to be LTCs based on their activity data that is collected from Github. We collect Github data from GHTorrent, a mirror of Github data. We select the most popular 917 projects, which contain 75,046 contributors. …

Secure Repackage-Proofing Framework For Android Apps Using Collatz Conjecture, Haoyu Ma, Shijia Li, Debin Gao, Chunfu Jia
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
App repackaging has been raising serious concerns about the health of the Android ecosystem, and repackage-proofing is an important mitigation against threat of such attacks. However, existing app repackage-proofing schemes were only evaluated against trivial adversaries simulated using analyzers for other purposes (e.g., disclosing privacy leakage vulnerabilities), hence were shown “effective” mainly because their key programming features were not even supported by those toolkits. Furthermore, existing works have also neglected dynamic adversaries capable of manipulating victim apps at runtime, making them vulnerable against such stronger opponents. In this paper, we propose a novel repackage-proofing framework, which deploys distributed detection and …

Non-Equivocation In Blockchain: Double-Authentication-Preventing Signatures Gone Contractual, Yannan Li, Willy Susilo, Guomin Yang, Yong Yu, Tran Viet Xuan Phuong, Dongxi Liu
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Equivocation is one of the most fundamental problems that need to be solved when designing distributed protocols. Traditional methods to defeat equivocation rely on trusted hardware or particular assumptions, which may hinder their adoption in practice. The advent of blockchain and decentralized cryptocurrencies provides an auspicious breakthrough paradigm to resolve the problem above. In this paper, we propose a blockchain-based solution to address contractual equivocation, which supports user-defined fine-grained policybased equivocation. Specifically, users will be de-incentive if the statements they made breach the predefined access rules. The core of our solution is a newly introduced primitive named Policy-Authentication-Preventing Signature (PoAPS), …

Spatially-Invariant Style-Codes Controlled Makeup Transfer, Han Deng, Chu Han, Hongmin Cai, Guoqiang Han, Shengfeng He
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Transferring makeup from the misaligned reference image is challenging. Previous methods overcome this barrier by computing pixel-wise correspondences between two images, which is inaccurate and computational-expensive. In this paper, we take a different perspective to break down the makeup transfer problem into a two-step extraction-assignment process. To this end, we propose a Style-based Controllable GAN model that consists of three components, each of which corresponds to target style-code encoding, face identity features extraction, and makeup fusion, respectively. In particular, a Part-specific Style Encoder encodes the component-wise makeup style of the reference image into a style-code in an intermediate latent space …

Learning Contextual Causality Between Daily Events From Time-Consecutive Images, Hongming Zhang, Yintong Huo, Xinran Zhao, Yangqiu Song, Dan Roth
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Conventional textual-based causal knowledge acquisition methods typically require laborious and expensive human annotations. As a result, their scale is often limited. Moreover, as no context is provided during the annotation, the resulting causal knowledge records (e.g., ConceptNet) typically do not consider the context. In this paper, we move out of the textual domain to explore a more scalable way of acquiring causal knowledge and investigate the possibility of learning contextual causality from the visual signal. Specifically, we first propose a high-quality dataset Vis-Causal and then conduct experiments to demonstrate that with good language and visual representations, it is possible to …

Minimum Coresets For Maxima Representation Of Multidimensional Data, Yanhao Wang, Michael Mathioudakis, Yuchen Li, Kian-Lee Tan
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Coresets are succinct summaries of large datasets such that, for a given problem, the solution obtained from a coreset is provably competitive with the solution obtained from the full dataset. As such, coreset-based data summarization techniques have been successfully applied to various problems, e.g., geometric optimization, clustering, and approximate query processing, for scaling them up to massive data. In this paper, we study coresets for the maxima representation of multidimensional data: Given a set of points in R , where is a small constant, and an error parameter ∈ (0, 1), a subset ⊆ …

With superhuman-level performance of face recognition, we are more concerned about the recognition of fine-grained attributes, such as emotion, age, and gender. However, given that the label space is extremely large and follows a long-tail distribution, it is quite expensive to collect sufficient samples for fine-grained attributes. This results in imbalanced training samples and inferior attribute recognition models. To this end, we propose the use of arbitrary attribute combinations, without human effort, to synthesize face images. In particular, to bridge the semantic gap between high-level attribute label space and low-level face image, we propose a novel neural-network-based approach that maps …
Hierarchical Scheduling For Real-Time Periodic Tasks In Symmetric Multiprocessing, Tom Springer, Peiyi Zhao
Hierarchical Scheduling For Real-Time Periodic Tasks In Symmetric Multiprocessing, Tom Springer, Peiyi Zhao
Engineering Faculty Articles and Research
In this paper, we present a new hierarchical scheduling framework for periodic tasks in symmetric multiprocessor (SMP) platforms. Partitioned and global scheduling are the two main approaches used by SMP based systems where global scheduling is recommended for overall performance and partitioned scheduling is recommended for hard real-time performance. Our approach combines both the global and partitioned approaches of traditional SMP-based schedulers to provide hard real-time performance guarantees for critical tasks and improved response times for soft real-time tasks. Implemented as part of VxWorks, the results are confirmed using a real-time benchmark application, where response times were improved for soft …

Pedestrian Attribute Recognition Using Two-Branch Trainable Gabor Wavelets Network, Imran N. Junejo
All Works
Keeping an eye on pedestrians as they navigate through a scene, surveillance cameras are everywhere. With this context, our paper addresses the problem of pedestrian attribute recognition (PAR). This problem entails recognizing attributes such as age-group, clothing style, accessories, footwear style etc. This multi-label problem is extremely challenging even for human observers and has rightly garnered attention from the computer vision community. Towards a solution to this problem, in this paper, we adopt trainable Gabor wavelets (TGW) layers and cascade them with a convolution neural network (CNN). Whereas other researchers are using fixed Gabor filters with the CNN, the proposed …

Metaheuristic algorithms are widely used for optimization in both research and the industrial community for simplicity, flexibility, and robustness. However, multi-modal optimization is a difficult task, even for metaheuristic algorithms. Two important issues that need to be handled for solving multi-modal problems are (a) to categorize multiple local/global optima and (b) to uphold these optima till the ending. Besides, a robust local search ability is also a prerequisite to reach the exact global optima. Grey Wolf Optimizer (GWO) is a recently developed nature-inspired metaheuristic algorithm that requires less parameter tuning. However, the GWO suffers from premature convergence and fails to …

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research
In this study, we used an integrative computational approach to examine molecular mechanisms underlying functional effects of the D614G mutation by exploring atomistic modeling of the SARS-CoV-2 spike proteins as allosteric regulatory machines. We combined coarse-grained simulations, protein stability and dynamic fluctuation communication analysis with network-based community analysis to examine structures of the native and mutant SARS-CoV-2 spike proteins in different functional states. Through distance fluctuations communication analysis, we probed stability and allosteric communication propensities of protein residues in the native and mutant SARS-CoV-2 spike proteins, providing evidence that the D614G mutation can enhance long-range signaling of the allosteric spike …

Establishing Suitable Metrics To Encourage Broader Use Of Atomic Requirements, William L. Honig
Computer Science: Faculty Publications and Other Works
Despite the apparent benefits of singular, individual, or atomic requirements, their use remains limited, and teaching their creation is difficult. The acceptance of a set of requirements metrics specifically designed to evaluate atomic requirements may lead to their better utilization and improved requirements engineering. Twelve metrics designed to measure atomic requirements are presented here: six used on individual requirements statements and six applied to a requirements document or set of requirement statements. Example metrics for individual requirements are Requirement Completeness and Requirement Atomicity; examples to measure multiple requirements include Requirements Traceablity and Requirements Purity. These metrics are designed to work …

Impact Of Personality Types And Matching Messaging On Password Strength, Anna Bakas, Anne Wagner, Spencer Johnston, Shelia Kennison, Eric Chan-Tin
Computer Science: Faculty Publications and Other Works
People often create passwords for their accounts that are insecure. An insecure password is often easy to guess– thus, hackers can easily access their victims’ accounts. It is important for users to know how to create and manage secure passwords so they can better protect themselves from hackers. It is well-known that different users have different personality types, such as Big Five and True Colors. This research examines if there is any link between personality types and password security behavior. Each participant was shown either a matching or mismatching message based on their personality type, and it was measured whether …

Sustained work enthusiasms of drivers are crucial for the success of large-scale ride-hailing platforms. In this paper, we conduct the first-of-its-kind exploration to encourage active participation of drivers via competition. We design Arena, a competition where drivers compete for prizes via completing more trips. Through a pilot study covering over 2,600 participants, we uncover the easy-win problem, an overlooked and serious issue in competition design for real-world drivers. It refers to situations where one competitor does not show up during competition whereas the other easily wins. To solve the easy-win problem without impairing motivation of drivers, we devise a novel …

Hierarchical Reinforcement Learning (HRL) enables autonomous decomposition of challenging long-horizon decision-making tasks into simpler subtasks. During the past years, the landscape of HRL research has grown profoundly, resulting in copious approaches. A comprehensive overview of this vast landscape is necessary to study HRL in an organized manner. We provide a survey of the diverse HRL approaches concerning the challenges of learning hierarchical policies, subtask discovery, transfer learning, and multi-agent learning using HRL. The survey is presented according to a novel taxonomy of the approaches. Based on the survey, a set of important open problems is proposed to motivate the future …

Efficient Conditional Gan Transfer With Knowledge Propagation Across Classes, Shahbazi. Mohamad, Zhiwu Huang, Huang, Danda Pani Paudel, Ajad Chhatkuli, Gool L. Van
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Generative adversarial networks (GANs) have shown impressive results in both unconditional and conditional image generation. In recent literature, it is shown that pre-trained GANs, on a different dataset, can be transferred to improve the image generation from a small target data. The same, however, has not been well-studied in the case of conditional GANs (cGANs), which provides new opportunities for knowledge transfer compared to unconditional setup. In particular, the new classes may borrow knowledge from the related old classes, or share knowledge among themselves to improve the training. This motivates us to study the problem of efficient conditional GAN transfer …

Monitoring Quality Of Life Indicators At Home From Sparse And Low-Cost Sensor Data., Dympna O'Sullivan, Rilwan Basaru, Simone Stumpf, Neil Maiden
Conference papers
Supporting older people, many of whom live with chronic conditions or cognitive and physical impairments, to live independently at home is of increasing importance due to ageing demographics. To aid independent living at home, much effort is being directed at reliably detecting activities from sensor data to monitor people’s quality of life or to enhance self-management of their own health. Current efforts typically leverage smart homes which have large numbers of sensors installed to overcome challenges in the accurate detection of activities. In this work, we report on the results of machine learning models based on data collected with a …

Law enforcement agencies in dense urban environments, faced with a wide range of incidents to handle and limited manpower, are turning to data-driven AI to inform their policing strategy. In this paper we present a patrol scheduling system called GRAND-VISION: Ground Response Allocation and Deployment - Visualization, Simulation, and Optimization. The system employs deep learning to generate incident sets that are used to train a patrol schedule that can accommodate varying manpower, break times, manual pre-allocations, and a variety of spatio-temporal demand features. The complexity of the scenario results in a system with real world applicability, which we demonstrate through …

This work is motivated by a real-world problem of coordinating B2B pickup-delivery operations to shopping malls involving multiple non-collaborative Logistics Service Providers (LSPs) in a congested city where space is scarce. This problem can be categorized as a Vehicle Routing Problem with Pickup and Delivery, Time Windows and Location Congestion with multiple LSPs (or ML-VRPLC in short), and we propose a scalable, decentralized, coordinated planning approach via iterative best response. We formulate the problem as a strategic game where each LSP is a self-interested agent but is willing to participate in a coordinated planning as long as there are sufficient …

This research introduces an extension of the Orienteering Problem (OP), known as Set Team Orienteering Problem with Time Windows (STOPTW), in which customers are first grouped into clusters. Each cluster is associated with a profit that will be collected if at least one customer within the cluster is visited. The objective is to find the best route that maximizes the total collected profit without violating time windows and time budget constraints. We propose an adaptive large neighborhood search algorithm to solve newly introduced benchmark instances. The preliminary results show the capability of the proposed algorithm to obtain good solutions within …

On Predicting Personal Values Of Social Media Users Using Community-Specific Language Features And Personal Value Correlation, Amila Silva, Pei Chi Lo, Ee-Peng Lim
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Personal values have significant influence on individuals’ behaviors, preferences, and decision making. It is therefore not a surprise that personal values of a person could influence his or her social media content and activities. Instead of getting users to complete personal value questionnaire, researchers have looked into a non-intrusive and highly scalable approach to predict personal values using user-generated social media data. Nevertheless, geographical differences in word usage and profile information are issues to be addressed when designing such prediction models. In this work, we focus on analyzing Singapore users’ personal values, and developing effective models to predict their personal …

Adaptive Aggregation Networks For Class-Incremental Learning, Yaoyao Liu, Bernt Schiele, Qianru Sun
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Class-Incremental Learning (CIL) aims to learn a classification model with the number of classes increasing phase-by-phase. An inherent problem in CIL is the stability-plasticity dilemma between the learning of old and new classes, i.e., high-plasticity models easily forget old classes, but high-stability models are weak to learn new classes. We alleviate this issue by proposing a novel network architecture called Adaptive Aggregation Networks (AANets) in which we explicitly build two types of residual blocks at each residual level (taking ResNet as the baseline architecture): a stable block and a plastic block. We aggregate the output feature maps from these two …
