Exploiting Association Rules Mining To Inform The Use Of Non-Manual Features In Sign Language Processing, Robert G. Smith
Exploiting Association Rules Mining To Inform The Use Of Non-Manual Features In Sign Language Processing, Robert G. Smith
Other Resources
In recent years, the use of virtual assistants and voice user interfaces has become a latent part of modern living. Unseen to the user are the various artificial intelligence and natural language processing technologies, the vast datasets, and the linguistic insights that underpin such tools. The technologies supporting them have chiefly targeted widely used spoken languages, leaving sign language users at a disadvantage. One important reason why sign languages are unsupported by such tools is a requirement of the underpinning technologies for a comprehensive description of the language. Sign language processing technologies endeavour to bridge this technology inequality.

Commonsense Based Text Mining On Urban Policy, Manish Puri, Aparna S. Varde, Gerard De Melo
Commonsense Based Text Mining On Urban Policy, Manish Puri, Aparna S. Varde, Gerard De Melo
School of Computing Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works
Local laws on urban policy, i.e., ordinances directly affect our daily life in various ways (health, business etc.), yet in practice, for many citizens they remain impervious and complex. This article focuses on an approach to make urban policy more accessible and comprehensible to the general public and to government officials, while also addressing pertinent social media postings. Due to the intricacies of the natural language, ranging from complex legalese in ordinances to informal lingo in tweets, it is practical to harness human judgment here. To this end, we mine ordinances and tweets via reasoning based on commonsense knowledge so …

Exploring The Educational Potential Of Ai Generative Art In 3d Design Fundamentals: A Case Study On Prompt Engineering And Creative Workflows, James Hutson, Bryan Robertson
Faculty Scholarship
AI will be increasingly integrated into artistic practices and creative workflows with prompt engineering assuming an increasingly important role in the process. With readilyavailable generative AI, such as Midjourney, DALL-E 2, and Craiyon (formerly DALLE-mini), anyone can seemingly create "art,” prompting questions about the future necessity of art and design education. However, whereas the ease with which content can be created has seen an outcry from the traditional artmaking community, fears over widespread adoption replacing the need for a firm foundation in art and design principles and fundamentals is unfounded. Instead, these tools should be seen and adopted as other …
Generalizing Graph Neural Networks Across Graphs, Time, And Tasks, Zhihao Wen
Generalizing Graph Neural Networks Across Graphs, Time, And Tasks, Zhihao Wen
Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)
Graph-structured data are ubiquitous across numerous real-world contexts, encompassing social networks, commercial graphs, bibliographic networks, and biological systems. Delving into the analysis of these graphs can yield significant understanding pertaining to their corresponding application fields.Graph representation learning offers a potent solution to graph analytics challenges by transforming a graph into a low-dimensional space while preserving its information to the greatest extent possible. This conversion into low-dimensional vectors enables the efficient computation of subsequent graph algorithms. The majority of prior research has concentrated on deriving node representations from a single, static graph. However, numerous real-world situations demand rapid generation of representations …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026
To provide rapid direction finding (DF) for unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) emitters in future wireless networks, a low-complexity direction of arrival (DOA) estimation architecture for massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) receiver arrays is constructed. In this paper, we propose two strategies to address the extremely high complexity caused by eigenvalue decomposition of the received signal covariance matrix. Firstly, a rapid power iterative rotational invariance (RPI-RI) method is proposed, which adopts the signal subspace generated by power iteration to obtain the final direction estimation through rotational invariance between subarrays. RPI-RI causes a significant complexity reduction at the cost of a substantial performance …

Automated program repair (APR) has been gaining ground recently. However, a significant challenge that still remains is test overfitting, in which APR-generated patches plausibly pass the validation test suite but fail to generalize. A common practice to assess the correctness of APR-generated patches is to judge whether they are equivalent to ground truth, i.e., developer-written patches, by either generating additional test cases or employing human manual inspections. The former often requires the generation of at least one test that shows behavioral differences between the APR-patched and developer-patched programs. Searching for this test, however, can be difficult as the search space …

In a prior practice and policy article published in Healthcare Science, we introduced the deployed application of an artificial intelligence (AI) model to predict longer-term inpatient readmissions to guide community care interventions for patients with complex conditions in the context of Singapore's Hospital to Home (H2H) program that has been operating since 2017. In this follow on practice and policy article, we further elaborate on Singapore's H2H program and care model, and its supporting AI model for multiple readmission prediction, in the following ways: (1) by providing updates on the AI and supporting information systems, (2) by reporting on customer …
Class-Incremental Exemplar Compression For Class-Incremental Learning, Zilin Luo, Yaoyao Liu, Bernt Schiele, Qianru Sun
Class-Incremental Exemplar Compression For Class-Incremental Learning, Zilin Luo, Yaoyao Liu, Bernt Schiele, Qianru Sun
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Exemplar-based class-incremental learning (CIL) finetunes the model with all samples of new classes but few-shot exemplars of old classes in each incremental phase, where the "few-shot" abides by the limited memory budget. In this paper, we break this "few-shot" limit based on a simple yet surprisingly effective idea: compressing exemplars by downsampling non-discriminative pixels and saving "many-shot" compressed exemplars in the memory. Without needing any manual annotation, we achieve this compression by generating 0-1 masks on discriminative pixels from class activation maps (CAM). We propose an adaptive mask generation model called class-incremental masking (CIM) to explicitly resolve two difficulties of …

Scanet: Self-Paced Semi-Curricular Attention Network For Non-Homogeneous Image Dehazing, Yu Guo, Yuan Gao, Ryan Wen Liu, Yuxu Lu, Jingxiang Qu, Shengfeng He, Ren Wenqi
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
The presence of non-homogeneous haze can cause scene blurring, color distortion, low contrast, and other degradations that obscure texture details. Existing homogeneous dehazing methods struggle to handle the non-uniform distribution of haze in a robust manner. The crucial challenge of non-homogeneous dehazing is to effectively extract the non-uniform distribution features and reconstruct the details of hazy areas with high quality. In this paper, we propose a novel self-paced semi-curricular attention network, called SCANet, for non-homogeneous image dehazing that focuses on enhancing haze-occluded regions. Our approach consists of an attention generator network and a scene re-construction network. We use the luminance …

Curricular Contrastive Regularization For Physics-Aware Single Image Dehazing, Yu Zheng, Jiahui Zhan, Shengfeng He, Yong Du
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Considering the ill-posed nature, contrastive regularization has been developed for single image dehazing, introducing the information from negative images as a lower bound. However, the contrastive samples are non-consensual, as the negatives are usually represented distantly from the clear (i.e., positive) image, leaving the solution space still under-constricted. Moreover, the interpretability of deep dehazing models is underexplored towards the physics of the hazing process. In this paper, we propose a novel curricular contrastive regularization targeted at a consensual contrastive space as opposed to a non-consensual one. Our negatives, which provide better lower-bound constraints, can be assembled from 1) the hazy …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
With the rapid development of Location-Based Services (LBS), a large number of LBS providers outsource spatial data to cloud servers to reduce their high computational and storage burdens, but meanwhile incur some security issues such as location privacy leakage. Thus, extensive privacy-preserving LBS schemes have been proposed. However, the existing solutions using Bloom filter do not take into account the redundant bits that do not map information in Bloom filter, resulting in high computational overheads, and reveal the inclusion relationship in Bloom filter. To solve these issues, we propose an efficient Privacy-preserving Spatial Range Query (PSRQ) scheme by skillfully combining …

Privacy-Preserving Ranked Spatial Keyword Query In Mobile Cloud-Assisted Fog Computing, Qiuyun Tong, Yinbin Li Miao, Ximeng Liu, Robert H. Deng, Robert H. Deng
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
With the increasing popularity of GPS-equipped mobile devices in cloud-assisted fog computing scenarios, massive spatio-textual data is generated and outsourced to cloud servers for storage and analysis. Existing privacy-preserving range query or ranked keyword search schemes does not support a unified index, and are just applicable for the symmetric environment where all users sharing the same secret key. To solve this issue, we propose a Privacy-preserving Ranked Spatial keyword Query in mobile cloud-assisted Fog computing (PRSQ-F). Specifically, we design a novel comparable product encoding strategy that combines both spatial and textual conditions tightly to retrieve the objects in query range …

A concurrent computing course is filled with challenges for upper-level programming students. Understanding concurrency provides deeper insight into many modern computing and programming language behaviors, but the subject matter can be difficult even for relatively proficient students. It can be a challenge to help students navigate and understand these unfamiliar topics. While there is a difference in general programming familiarity, teaching this novel material is not unlike some challenges faced when engaging introductory students with first programming concepts. In this work, we explore the use of analogy by students while learning a novel programming methodology. We investigate perceptions of the …

Pedagogical Prisms: Toward Domain Isomorphic Analogy Design For Relevance And Engagement In Computing Education, Briana Christina Bettin, Linda Ott
Michigan Tech Publications
Analogy is a frequently leveraged pedagogical tool used across many disciplines, with computing being no exception. Computing education researchers, however, have raised concerns regarding the limitations of analogy. One obvious concern is the relevance of any given analogy to learners. Designing relevant analogies can greatly increase student engagement with the problem space by centering examples on their lived experiences. Relevant analogies can also facilitate learners in building appropriate connections as they explore novel concepts. Designing relevant analogies is an ongoing process which requires understanding the learners' context. It is unlikely that any given analogy will be "universally"relevant across learners, problems, …

Stream-Evolving Bot Detection Framework Using Graph-Based And Feature-Based Approaches For Identifying Social Bots On Twitter, Eiman Alothali
Dissertations
This dissertation focuses on the problem of evolving social bots in online social networks, particularly Twitter. Such accounts spread misinformation and inflate social network content to mislead the masses. The main objective of this dissertation is to propose a stream-based evolving bot detection framework (SEBD), which was constructed using both graph- and feature-based models. It was built using Python, a real-time streaming engine (Apache Kafka version 3.2), and our pretrained model (bot multi-view graph attention network (Bot-MGAT)). The feature-based model was used to identify predictive features for bot detection and evaluate the SEBD predictions. The graph-based model was used to …

Intellectual Property (IP) includes ideas, innovations, methodologies, works of authorship (viz., literary and artistic works), emblems, brands, images, etc. This property is intangible since it is pertinent to the human intellect. Therefore, IP entities are indisputably vulnerable to infringements and modifications without the owner’s consent. IP protection regulations have been deployed and are still in practice, including patents, copyrights, contracts, trademarks, trade secrets, etc., to address these challenges. Unfortunately, these protections are insufficient to keep IP entities from being changed or stolen without permission. As for this, some IPs require hardware IP protection mechanisms, and others require software …

Neural Tabula Rasa: Foundations For Realistic Memories And Learning, Patrick R. Perrine
Master's Theses
Understanding how neural systems perform memorization and inductive learning tasks are of key interest in the field of computational neuroscience. Similarly, inductive learning tasks are the focus within the field of machine learning, which has seen rapid growth and innovation utilizing feedforward neural networks. However, there have also been concerns regarding the precipitous nature of such efforts, specifically in the area of deep learning. As a result, we revisit the foundation of the artificial neural network to better incorporate current knowledge of the brain from computational neuroscience. More specifically, a random graph was chosen to model a neural system. This …

Wasm-Pbchunk: Incrementally Developing A Racket-To-Wasm Compiler Using Partial Bytecode Compilation, Adam C. Perlin
Master's Theses
Racket is a modern, general-purpose programming language with a language-oriented focus. To date, Racket has found notable uses in research and education, among other applications. To expand the reach of the language, there has been a desire to develop an efficient platform for running Racket in a web-based environment. WebAssembly (Wasm) is a binary executable format for a stack-based virtual machine designed to provide a fast, efficient, and secure execution environment for code on the web. Wasm is primarily intended to be a compiler target for higher-level languages. Providing Wasm support for the Racket project may be a promising way …
How Does Credit Risk Affect Cost Management Strategies? Evidence On The Initiation Of Credit Default Swap And Sticky Cost Behavior, Jing Dai, Nan Hu, Rong Huang, Yan Yan
How Does Credit Risk Affect Cost Management Strategies? Evidence On The Initiation Of Credit Default Swap And Sticky Cost Behavior, Jing Dai, Nan Hu, Rong Huang, Yan Yan
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
In this paper, we examine the effect of credit defaults swaps (CDS) initiation on reference firms' cost management strategies. CDS contracts provide insurance protection for creditors, inducing a shift in bargaining power from borrowers to creditors and an excessive incidence of bankruptcy. Anticipating more intransigent creditors in debt renegotiations and higher bankruptcy risk, CDS firms are incentivized to mitigate risk through decreasing cost stickiness after CDS initiation, as cost stickiness lowers liquidity and triggers early covenant violations. We find that, on average, CDS initiation is associated with a decline in reference firms' cost stickiness. This association is more pronounced for …

Despite advances in our understanding of low-luminosity active galactic nuclei (LLAGNs), the fundamental details about the mechanisms of radiation and flare/outburst in hot accretion flow are still largely missing. We have systematically analysed the archival Chandra and NuSTAR X-ray data of the nearby LLAGN M81*, whose Lbol ∼ 10−5LEdd. Through a detailed study of X-ray light curve and spectral properties, we find that the X-ray continuum emission of the power-law shape more likely originates from inverse Compton scattering within the hot accretion flow. In contrast to Sgr A*, flares are rare in M81*. Low-amplitude variation …

A Novel Approach To Extending Music Using Latent Diffusion, Keon Roohparvar, Franz J. Kurfess
Master's Theses
Using deep learning to synthetically generate music is a research domain that has gained more attention from the public in the past few years. A subproblem of music generation is music extension, or the task of taking existing music and extending it. This work proposes the Continuer Pipeline, a novel technique that uses deep learning to take music and extend it in 5 second increments. It does this by treating the musical generation process as an image generation problem; we utilize latent diffusion models (LDMs) to generate spectrograms, which are image representations of music. The Continuer Pipeline is able to …

Restless multi-armed bandits (RMAB) is a popular framework for optimizing performance with limited resources under uncertainty. It is an extremely useful model for monitoring beneficiaries (arms) and executing timely interventions using health workers (limited resources) to ensure optimal benefit in public health settings. For instance, RMAB has been used to track patients’ health and monitor their adherence in tuberculosis settings, ensure pregnant mothers listen to automated calls about good pregnancy practices, etc. Due to the limited resources, typically certain individuals, communities, or regions are starved of interventions, which can potentially have a significant negative impact on the individual/community in the …

Optimal Domain-Partitioning Algorithm For Real-Life Transportation Networks And Finite Element Meshes, Jimesh Bhagatji, Sharanabasaweshwara Asundi, Eric Thompson, Duc T. Nguyen
Civil & Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications
For large-scale engineering problems, it has been generally accepted that domain-partitioning algorithms are highly desirable for general-purpose finite element analysis (FEA). This paper presents a heuristic numerical algorithm that can efficiently partition any transportation network (or any finite element mesh) into a specified number of subdomains (usually depending on the number of parallel processors available on a computer), which will result in “minimising the total number of system BOUNDARY nodes” (as a primary criterion) and achieve “balancing work loads” amongst the subdomains (as a secondary criterion). The proposed seven-step heuristic algorithm (with enhancement features) is based on engineering common sense …

Assessment center (AC) exercises such as role-plays have established themselves as valuable approaches for obtaining insights into interpersonal behavior, but they are often considered the “Rolls Royce” of personnel assessment due to their high costs. The observation and rating process comprises a substantial part of these costs. In an exploratory case study, we capitalize on recent advances in natural language processing (NLP) by developing NLP-based machine learning (ML) models to investigate the possibility of automatically scoring AC exercises. First, we compared the convergent-related validity and contamination with word count of ML scores based on models that used different NLP methods …
