A Multimodal Immune System Inspired Defense Architecture For Detecting And Deterring Digital Pathogens In Container Hosted Web Services, Islam Khalil
Theses and Dissertations
With the increased use of web technologies, microservices, and Application Programming Interface (API) for integration between systems, and with the development of containerization of services on operating system level as a method of isolating system execution and for easing the deployment and scaling of systems, there is a growing need as well as opportunities for providing platforms that improve the security of such services. In our work, we propose an architecture for a containerization platform that utilizes various concepts derived from the human immune system. The goal of the proposed containerization platform is to introduce the concept of slowing down …
An Electric Vehicle Analysis Model For Sustainable Environment In Devoicing Nationals, Nada A. Nabeeh, Karam M. Sallam, Ali Wagdy Mohamed
An Electric Vehicle Analysis Model For Sustainable Environment In Devoicing Nationals, Nada A. Nabeeh, Karam M. Sallam, Ali Wagdy Mohamed
Neutrosophic Systems with Applications
The usage of fossil fuels is regarded as the generation of energy alternative towards electric vehicles (EVs) in third-world nations for a cleaner transportation sector. The rapid development of EVs is the most effective solution, even if the short-term ecological benefits for third-world nations cannot cover the short-term expenses. Since ecological issues have opened the door for certain developing nations to catch up to the worldwide competition, it is important to weigh other options to bring EVs to the marketplace. Hence, the study proposes a model of neutrosophic set combined with entropy to deal with uncertain cases. The proposed model …

Towards An Experimental Bibliography Of Hemispheric Reconstruction Newspapers, Joshua Ortiz Baco, Benjamin Charles Germain Lee, Jim Casey, Sarah H. Salter
Criticism
Digital collections of newspapers have drawn broader attention to the fragmented and scattered print histories of minoritized communities. Attempts to survey these histories through bibliography, however, quickly meet with a fundamental problem: the practice of bibliographic description calls for creating a static record of social affiliations. Given the overwhelming scholarly consensus that categories such as race, ethnicity, and language are socially constructed, this article introduces an experimental bibliographic method for mapping the vast landscape of historical newspapers. This method extends the machine learning affordances of a recent project called Newspaper Navigator to enumerate the newspapers in Chronicling America according to …
Poly-Gan: Regularizing Polygons With Generative Adversarial Networks, Lasith Niroshan, James Carswell
Poly-Gan: Regularizing Polygons With Generative Adversarial Networks, Lasith Niroshan, James Carswell
Conference Papers
Regularizing polygons involves simplifying irregular and noisy shapes of built environment objects (e.g. buildings) to ensure that they are accurately represented using a minimum number of vertices. It is a vital processing step when creating/transmitting online digital maps so that they occupy minimal storage space and bandwidth. This paper presents a data-driven and Deep Learning (DL) based approach for regularizing OpenStreetMap building polygon edges. The study introduces a building footprint regularization technique (Poly-GAN) that utilises a Generative Adversarial Network model trained on irregular building footprints and OSM vector data. The proposed method is particularly relevant for map features …
Quantifying Implicit Bias In Judicial Legal Opinions: A Natural Language Processing Approach, Philip N. Surendran
Quantifying Implicit Bias In Judicial Legal Opinions: A Natural Language Processing Approach, Philip N. Surendran
Quantitative Social Science Undergraduate Senior Theses
Implicit bias and criminal justice are two concepts that have long been intertwined. There is no justice without neutrality, and yet how do we tell if the actors enforcing the system are actually impartial? In this thesis, I utilize recent advancements in machine learning to attempt to answer this question. Specifically, I use natural language processing to examine the text of opinions written by judges in appellate courts, and I leverage these findings to build quantifiable measures of implicit bias. In particular, I look at the over/under-representation of certain emotions, sentiments and linguistic styles as a proxy for disparate treatment …
Stereotypes And Language Models: Understanding How Language Models Encode Stereotypes, Debiasing Language Models, And Examining How Stereotypes Affect Conversations, Brian C. Wang
Computer Science Senior Theses
This thesis describes a variety of approaches in examining how language models encode stereotypes (understanding stereotypes from a model point-of-view), debiasing language models, and using language models to understand how stereotypes affect conversations (understanding stereotypes from a conversational point-of-view). We present a novel approach for textual clues analysis that makes language models more interpretable, combining the understanding of what stereotypes the internal structures of language models have encoded during their initial training (via attention-based analysis) and understanding what textual clues are most relevant to identifying stereotypes for models trained to detect stereotypes (via SHAP-based analysis). We find that different pre-trained …

Sarcasm Detection In English And Arabic Tweets Using Transformer Models, Rishik Lad
Computer Science Senior Theses
This thesis describes our approach toward the detection of sarcasm and its various types in English and Arabic Tweets through methods in deep learning. There are five problems we attempted: (1) detection of sarcasm in English Tweets, (2) detection of sarcasm in Arabic Tweets, (3) determining the type of sarcastic speech subcategory for English Tweets, (4) determining which of two semantically equivalent English Tweets is sarcastic, and (5) determining which of two semantically equivalent Arabic Tweets is sarcastic. All tasks were framed as classification problems, and our contributions are threefold: (a) we developed an English binary classifier system with RoBERTa, …

When I was about three years old, I distinctly remember being too small to see what was on top of the table. A couple of years later, when I could see those objects, I thought the world around me had grown smaller. In a way, it did, as I experienced, lived, captured, remembered, and shared the space repeatedly. This sense of the world shrinking was exaggerated during the Covid-19 pandemic, allowing new behaviours and modes of interaction to emerge. Continually shaping our modern lives, virtual technologies redefine how we access and share information and stories or even explore new places. …

Next-Generation Sequencing Data-Based Association Testing Of A Group Of Genetic Markers For Complex Responses Using A Generalized Linear Model Framework, Zheng Xu, Song Yan, Cong Wu, Qing Duan, Sixia Chen, Yun Li
School of Computing: Faculty Publications
To study the relationship between genetic variants and phenotypes, association testing is adopted; however, most association studies are conducted by genotype-based testing. Testing methods based on next-generation sequencing (NGS) data without genotype calling demonstrate an advantage over testing methods based on genotypes in the scenarios when genotype estimation is not accurate. Our objective was to develop NGS data-based methods for association studies to fill the gap in the literature. Single-variant testing methods based on NGS data have been proposed, including our previously proposed single-variant NGS data-based testing method, i.e., UNC combo method. The NGS data-based group testing method has been …

A New Method Using Deep Transfer Learning On Ecg To Predict The Response To Cardiac Resynchronization Therapy, Zhuo He, Hongjin Si, Xinwei Zhang, Qing-Hui Chen, Jiangang Zou, Weihua Zhou
Michigan Tech Publications
Background: Cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT) has emerged as an effective treatment for heart failure patients with electrical dyssynchrony. However, accurately predicting which patients will respond to CRT remains a challenge. This study explores the application of deep transfer learning techniques to train a predictive model for CRT response. Methods: In this study, the short-time Fourier transform (STFT) technique was employed to transform ECG signals into two-dimensional images. A transfer learning approach was then applied on the MIT-BIT ECG database to pre-train a convolutional neural network (CNN) model. The model was fine-tuned to extract relevant features from the ECG images, and …

Ai Art: Artists’ Best Friend Or Mortal Enemy?, Ethan Gabrys
Tredway Library Prize for First-Year Research
This paper analyzes the impacts and implications of generative AI software on art and examines the ethics of using such tools. Through the argument that careless use of these tools presents a danger to the art world as they risk devaluing human expression, Gabrys states that “as what it means to be human changes with each generation, new artists express sentiment through their art. Art has the ability to tell us about the human experience.” He concludes that the use of AI tools takes the skill and sentiment of human artists out of the equation, begging the question: if the …

Counterfactual Replacement Analysis For Interpretation Of Blackbox Sexism Classification Models, Anders Knospe
Computer Science Senior Theses
This paper describes the AKD team’s system designed for SemEval-2023 Task 10: Explainable Detection of Online Sexism (EDOS). We implement a simple fine-tuned GPT-3 model, ranking 26 on the leaderboard for task A. We also discuss different approaches to interpretability in the context of critiquing the EDOS task’s sub-category oriented approach. Finally, we propose counterfactual replacement analysis, a novel prototype technique for approaching explainability.

Computer Science: Faculty Publications and Other Works
Phishing victimization is prevalent and results in theft of personal identifiable information (PII) or installing malware to steal PII. Drawing upon social psychological and criminological theories, we conducted a prospective study to assess three groups of predictors to being phished or not: a) prior victimization; b) protective or vulnerable habitual strategies, and c) emotional and cognitive decision-making styles. Students (N = 236) completed a survey assessing these predictors and then about 4 weeks later received a phishing e-mail using the university’s phishing testing system. The e-mail requested that they click on a link and enter their student ID to avoid …

One of the most effective ways to help patients at the dangerous levels of diabetes is an artificial pancreas, a device that constantly monitors the patient's blood sugar level and injects insulin based on this level. Patient's reaction to insulin is highly individualized, so the artificial pancreas needs to be trained on each patient. It turns out that the best training results are attained when instead of the usual ReLU neurons, we use their minor modification known as Exponential Linear Units (ELU). In this paper, we provide a theoretical explanation for the empirically observed effectiveness of ELUs.

(R2053) Analysis Of Map/Ph/1 Queueing Model Subject To Two-Stage Vacation Policy With Imperfect Service, Setup Time, Breakdown, Delay Time, Phase Type Repair And Reneging Customer, N. Arulmozhi
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
In this paper, we study a continuous-time single server queueing system with an infinite system of capacity, a two-stage vacation policy with imperfect service, setup, breakdown, delay time, phase-type of repair and customer reneging. The Markovian Arrival Process is used for the arrival of a customer and the phase-type distribution is used when offering service. This encompasses the policy of two vacations: a single working vacation and multiple vacations. Using the Matrix-Analytic Method to approach the system generates an invariant probability vector for this model. Henceforth, the busy period, waiting time distribution and cost analysis are the additional findings. The …

(R1975) Map/Ph(1), Ph(2)/2 Queue With Multiple Vacation, Optional Service, Consultations And Interruptions, G. Ayyappan, S. Sankeetha
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
Two types of services are explored in this paper: regular server and main server, both of which provide both regular and optional services. Customers arrive using the Markovian Arrival Process (MAP), and service time is allocated based on phase type. The regular server uses the main server as a resource. Customers’ service at the primary server is disrupted as a result. When the queue size is empty, the main server can take several vacations. This system has been represented as a QBD Process that investigates steady state with the use of matrix analytic techniques, employing finite-dimensional block matrices. Our model’s …

Masked autoencoder (MAE), a simple and effective self-supervised learning framework based on the reconstruction of masked image regions, has recently achieved prominent success in a variety of vision tasks. Despite the emergence of intriguing empirical observations on MAE, a theoretically principled understanding is still lacking. In this work, we formally characterize and justify existing empirical in-sights and provide theoretical guarantees of MAE. We formulate the underlying data-generating process as a hierarchical latent variable model, and show that under reasonable assumptions, MAE provably identifies a set of latent variables in the hierarchical model, explaining why MAE can extract high-level information from …

Haptic is the modality that complements traditional multimedia, i.e., audiovisual, to evolve the next wave of innovation at which the Internet data stream can be exchanged to enable remote skills and control applications. This will require ultra-low latency and ultra-high reliability to evolve the mobile experience into the era of Digital Twin and Tactile Internet. While the 5th generation of mobile networks is not yet widely deployed, Long-Term Evolution (LTE-A) latency remains much higher than the 1 ms requirement for the Tactile Internet and therefore the Digital Twin. This work investigates an interesting solution based on the incorporation of Software-defined …

Natural Color Interpretation Of Interval-Valued Fuzzy Degrees, Victor L. Timchenko, Yury P. Kondratenko, Vladik Kreinovich, Olga Kosheleva
Departmental Technical Reports (CS)
Intuitively, interval-values fuzzy degrees are more adequate for representing expert uncertainty than the traditional [0,1]-based ones. Indeed, the very need for fuzzy degrees comes from the fact that experts often cannot describe their opinion not in terms of precise numbers, but by using imprecise ("fuzzy") words from natural language like "small". In such situations, it is strange to expect the same expert to be able to provide an exact number describing his/her degree of certainty; it is more natural to ask this expert to mark the whole interval (or even, more generally, a fuzzy set of possible degrees). In spite …

Logical Inference Inevitably Appears: Fuzzy-Based Explanation, Julio C. Urenda, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich, Orsolya Csiszar
Departmental Technical Reports (CS)
Many thousands years ago, our primitive ancestors did not have the ability to reason logically and to perform logical inference. This ability appeared later. A natural question is: was this appearance inevitable -- or was this a lucky incident that could have been missed? In this paper, we use fuzzy techniques to provide a possible answer to this question. Our answer is: yes, the appearance of logical inference in inevitable.

Is Fully Explainable Ai Even Possible: Fuzzy-Based Analysis, Miroslav Svitek, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich
Departmental Technical Reports (CS)
One of the main limitations of many current AI-based decision-making systems is that they do not provide any understandable explanations of how they came up with the produced decision. Taking into account that these systems are not perfect, that their decisions are sometimes far from good, the absence of an explanation makes it difficult to separate good decisions from suspicious ones. Because of this, many researchers are working on making AI explainable. In some applications areas -- e.g., in chess -- practitioners get an impression that there is a limit to understandability, that some decisions remain inhuman -- not explainable. …

In many practical situations, practitioners use easier-to-compute fuzzy control to approximate the more-difficult-co-compute optimal control. As expected, for many characteristics, this approximate control is slightly worse than the optimal control it approximates, However, with respect to robustness or smoothness, the approximating fuzzy control is often better than the original one. In this paper, we provide a theoretical explanation for this somewhat mysterious empirical phenomenon.

Video games are an incredibly popular pastime enjoyed by people of all ages world wide. Many different kinds of games exist, but most games feature some elements of the player overcoming some challenge, usually through gameplay. These challenges are insurmountable for some people and may turn them off to video games as a pastime. Games can be made more accessible to players of little skill and/or experience through the use of Dynamic Difficulty Adjustment (DDA) systems that adjust the difficulty of the game in response to the player’s performance. This research seeks to establish the effectiveness of machine learning techniques …

Why Softmax? Because It Is The Only Consistent Approach To Probability-Based Classification, Anatole Lokshin, Vladik Kreinovich
Departmental Technical Reports (CS)
In many practical problems, the most effective classification techniques are based on deep learning. In this approach, once the neural network generates values corresponding to different classes, these values are transformed into probabilities by using the softmax formula. Researchers tried other transformation, but they did not work as well as softmax. A natural question is: why is softmax so effective? In this paper, we provide a possible explanation for this effectiveness: namely, we prove that softmax is the only consistent approach to probability-based classification. In precise terms, it is the only approach for which two reasonable probability-based ideas -- Least …
