Fabric arts, and the practice of dyeing fabric using various resist techniques, is a tradition that goes back centuries, and is unique among art mediums in its relation to science, as the innovations in dye production have directly affected the art form. The development of synthetic dyes in the 1800’s greatly affected the way fabric is dyed, and subsequently the way clothes were made and consumed. As opposed to dyes made of natural materials, synthetic dyes cam in more colors, were brighter, easier to make in large quantities, and lasted longer since they didn’t fade with repeated washings. Major Depressive disorder (MDD) plagues society and stands at the forefront of research as MDD affects approximately 16% of the population. Pharmaceutical drugs, including the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), have been used for MDD treatment and remain a popular option today. However, current antidepressant treatments have proven to be ineffective in just less than half of the patients. Research continues with the goal to better understand the mechanisms of the pathology of depression and to search for other treatment options. For example, the stress-neurogenesis hypothesis investigates the role of stress and decreased neuroplasticity within MDD.

The detection of drugs of abuse using Raman spectroscopy is of particular interest to forensic researchers at the moment. Raman spectroscopy is highly specific, fast, non-destructive, and can be adapted for in-situ measurements, making it the ideal forensic technique. Researchers working under the guidance of Doctor Igor Lednev have been able to use UV resonance Raman spectroscopy to detect cocaine in oral fluid without the need for sample pretreatment. They were however unable to detect the cocaine at forensically relevant levels. Phages are viral bodies that infect bacterial hosts, and have shown promising applications as alternatives to antibiotics for the treatment of bacterial infections. This project examines the morphology of siphoviridae mycobacteriophage, which have long, flexible, non-contractile tails as well as the characteristic head, called a capsid. Using electron microscopy photos of sequenced phages, tail length and capsid diameter were measured and compared to further characterize morphological relationships between genetically distinct phages. The computation of free energy is pivotal to understanding the fundamental nature of chemical phenomena. That is, whether a specific molecular outcome occurs spontaneously or is inherently unfavorable. The need to do this with consistent accuracy begs for the use of quantum mechanical (QM) methods. However, techniques for directly computing free energy differences with QM or mixed QM/MM methods are untenable, as the computational expense is quite exorbitant. Polymethacrylate-based copolymers, such as EudragitTM, are sensitive to alterations in pH levels, becoming increasingly more soluble in response to an increase in pH. The computational study of the formation and growth of atmospheric aerosols requires an accurate Gibbs free energy surface, which can be obtained from gas phase electronic structure and vibrational frequency calculations. These quantities are valid for those atmospheric clusters whose geometries correspond to a minimum on their potential energy surfaces. The Gibbs free energy of the minimum energy structure can be used to predict atmospheric concentrations of the cluster under a variety of conditions such as temperature and pressure. Ammonia is the basis for producing fertilizers for food production. The Haber-Bosch process is the main method to produce ammonia. Because of the energy and environmental problems associated with the Haber-Bosch process, extensive research is being explored for other ammonia production methods, including electrochemical methods based on nitrogen reduction reaction (NRR). In this thesis, molybdenum disulfide nanocatalysts (~4 nm) on carbon fibers were synthesized by hydrothermal reactions. Over 100 metabolic serine hydrolases are present in humans with confirmed functions in metabolism, immune response, and neurotransmission. Among potentially clinically relevant but uncharacterized human serine hydrolases is OVCA2, a serine hydrolase that has been linked with a variety of cancer-related processes. Herein, we developed a heterologous expression system for OVCA2 and determined the comprehensive substrate specificity of OVCA2 against two ester substrate libraries. Based on this analysis, OVCA2 was confirmed as a serine hydrolase with a strong preference for long-chain alkyl ester substrates (>10-carbons) and high selectivity against a variety of short, branched, and substituted esters. A novel organic TADF chromophore was synthesized via a 3-step process to emit a blue fluorescent light upon excitation. The chromophore was covalently attached to a 61% isobutyryl amidated poly(ethyleneimine) (PEI-IBAm0.61) non-viral gene vector utilized in gene transfection experiments. The gene vectors are loaded with a green fluorescent protein (GFP) and are monitored via fluorescence microscopy. The addition of the blue chromophore therefore allows for the monitoring of the movements of the PEI-IBAm0.61 through the full delivery mechanism of the GFP inside the cells. Illicitly manufactured fentanyls (IMFs) have become a global and local epidemic and have recently caused an increase in the number of accidental exposures and overdoses in first responders and the community. The aim of the research is to explore a method to discriminate between IMFs and cutting agents in mock street samples using Raman Spectroscopy. Predominant Raman bands corresponding to the structural moieties of each individual illicit, licit drugs, and cutting agents were tracked, then used to discriminate between varying components in a mock street sample. Carbohydrate-based low molecular weight gelators (LMWGs) are interesting compounds with a variety of applications. In this research, a library of nineteen carbamate derivatives of N-acetyl-D-glucosamine were synthesized and characterized, and several derivatives were found to be effective LMWGs. They formed gels in pump oils as well as mixtures of water with ethanol or water with DMSO. The structures of the carbamoyl chains played an important role in the gelation properties, short chain aliphatic derivatives and phenyl carbamates formed gels in more solvents than certain aromatic and dimeric carbamates. Research has shown that undergraduate students benefit from seeing examples of mathematics applied to real-world situations. This article describes three different paradigms for how math and discipline partner faculty worked together to create mathematical activities that illustrate applications of the topics being studied in precalculus and calculus. All three examples are discussed within the framework of PDSA cycles to describe the process by which the teams collaborated to plan, enact, study, and refine their lessons. Gunshot residue (GSR) is a type of trace evidence that can often be recovered at violent crime scenes. There are two major types of GSR, organic gunshot residue (OGSR), and inorganic gunshot residue (IGSR). Traditional forensic analysis of GSR focuses on IGSR, although with the movement towards lead-free, or non-toxic ammunition, IGSR analysis has become less informative, as lead is a major component of IGSR analysis. In order to develop a better understanding heterogeneous nucleation of barite, barite precipitation was studied under varying experimental parameters. Hydrothermal atomic force microscopy (HAFM) and optical microscopy were used to investigate the effect of change in temperature, supersaturation and varying ratios of ions on heterogeneous nucleation of barite. In the experiments conducted at higher temperatures, the particles thus nucleated were found to display characteristic hexagonal and rhomboidal shapes. In comparing results of particle densities among different ion ratios, there is evidence suggesting that barium to sulfate ratio plays a role of promoter. This work focuses on improving the fluorescence intensity of cerium oxide (ceria) nanoparticles (NPs) through added plasmonic nanostructures. Ceria nanoparticles are fluorescent nanostructures which can emit visible fluorescence emissions under violet excitation. Here, we investigated different added plasmonic nanostructures, such as gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) and Cadmium sulfide/selenide quantum dots (CdS/CdSe QDs), to check the enhancement of fluorescence intensity emissions caused by ceria NPs. Different plasmonic resonances of both aforementioned nanostructures have been selected to develop optical coupling with both fluorescence excitation and emission wavelengths of ceria.
