The accepted chemical reactions in the dissolution of gold by cyanide solutions require the presence of gold, cyanide, water, and oxygen. The importance of dissolved oxygen in cyanide solutions as a factor is recognized by those familiar with cyanidation. Manufacturers of cyanidation equipment realize the necessity of oxygen, as shown by the appliances they have developed which are attached to the agitators in order to saturate the cyanide solutions with air.

A Study Of The Effect Of Temperature Upon Reactions Between Stannous And Arsenate Ions In Silicic Acid Gels, Ellis Elder

Chapter I: Statement of the Problem
The purpose of this investigation was to determine to what extent the reaction between stannous and arsenate ions in silicic acid gels is influenced by temperature.
This was to be done by observing (1) the rate of crystal growth; and (2) the appearance of the crystal growth in sets of gels identical in composition but kept at different temperatures throughout the process of crystal growth.

At first, it was as a blur, that had shrouded a great mystery for ages and ages, until some seventy odd years ago. Then came Thomas Graham, who could not satisfy himself with merely viewing a blur as a blur. Being a scientist, he applied his mind experimentally, which the keen precision of any of the eminent astronomers using a telescope, and viewed more clearly this mist which hovered above the horizon.

Since the almost universal laboratory method of preparing absolute alcohol requires considerable time and trouble, gives a low yield of alcohol and leaves a distilling flask badly clogged with hydrated lime, Professor S.S, Kistler and I undertook the following research in the hope that we might devise a new method that would be both rapid and easy to perform.
