Electrolytic Oxidative Coupling Of Alcohols With Aldehydes To Form Esters, Katherine L. Verboom
Electrolytic Oxidative Coupling Of Alcohols With Aldehydes To Form Esters, Katherine L. Verboom
Honors College Theses
There are copious amounts of naturally occurring and synthetic esters known that have a wide range of applications in industry to produce fine chemicals. Traditional methods of ester synthesis involve a reaction between a carboxylic acid and an alcohol in the presence of a Bronsted acid catalyst. The primary objective of this research project was to carry out the ester synthesis using the electrochemical coupling of aldehydes with alcohols instead of with a Bronsted acid catalyst because the electrochemical coupling would be an all-around better alternative of ester synthesis than the traditional method of using the catalyst. Electrochemistry has long …

Assessment Of Catalytic Function Of Gold Nanorod-Bound Tempo Under Nir Irradiation, Kristi L. St. Clair
Assessment Of Catalytic Function Of Gold Nanorod-Bound Tempo Under Nir Irradiation, Kristi L. St. Clair
Honors College Theses
Gold nanoparticles are of interest to a number of fields due to their size-dependent optical properties, high stability, and large surface area. The combination of these properties allows for a variety of uses including photothermal therapy, drug delivery and catalysis. Gold nanorods (GNR) absorb light of a given wavelength which stimulates the oscillation of electrons on the surface and is known as the surface plasmon resonance effect. The localized heating of rods via irradiation may cause enhanced effectiveness of an attached organic catalyst which allows the oxidation of alcohols to occur at room temperature. Previously, similar catalytic systems required high …

Time Travel: Scientists And Their Contributions Towards The Discoveries Of The Atom And Atomic Properties, Austin Wright
Time Travel: Scientists And Their Contributions Towards The Discoveries Of The Atom And Atomic Properties, Austin Wright
GS4 Georgia Southern Student Scholars Symposium
The discovery of the atom and its associated components and properties paved the way for laying the foundation of chemistry related knowledge. However, the historical discoveries of each individual component are often forgotten or ignored due to the students‰Ûª innate belief of it ‰Û÷being difficult‰Ûª to remember such specific information. To assist students with grasping the properties of the atom and its components, a timeline-assisted chronology of atomic discoveries was created. Our objective is to present the scientists, with their individual contributions to atomic theory, along with the year it was discovered in an interactive manner. Using this timeline, students …

Ferrocene containing N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) ligated gold(I) complexes of the type [Au(NHC)2]+ were prepared and found to be capable of regulating the formation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) via multiple mechanisms. Single crystal X-ray analysis of bis(1-(ferrocenylmethyl)-3-mesitylimidazol-2-ylidene)-gold(I) chloride (5) and bis(1,3-di(ferrocenylmethyl)imidazol-2-ylidene)-gold(I) chloride (6) revealed a quasi-linear geometry around the gold(I) centers (i.e., the C–Au–C bond angle were measured to be ∼177° and all the Au–Ccarbene bonds distances were in the range of 2.00 (7)–2.03 (1) Å). A series of cell studies indicated that cell proliferation inhibition and ROS generation were directly proportional to the amount of ferrocene contained within the …
